touching in the 40s. we are talking in the north bay valley. that may surprise you a little bit. santa rosa a few degrees cooler yesterday with patchy dense fog reported in santa rosa and petaluma. most of us holding in the 50s with fog and clouds around the bay. mostly sunny inland. for the afternoon mostly sunny skies. temperatures today similar to yesterday but we will fall a little bit below average. seeing you today more so for the weekend. i'll explain when we bring you that forecast in a few moments. good morning, sal. good morning, westbound hay 4 that looks pretty good. we haven't gotten the slow traffic here but it is slowing in parts of antioch as you drive west. also the morning commute looks good on westbound 24. let's go back to dave and pam. right now at 6:00 developing news in san francisco. people who had been evacuated just hours ago from a tenderloin hotel they are now being allowed to go back in. ktvu alex savidge has new information now from the police

about the reason for that evacuation in the first place. alex. >> reporter: people will be going back home shortly. that is because this building has been cleared no explosives were found inside. it's an apartment building just up on the right hand side here on jones street where we have been all morning long. no explosives found. that's the word we got from a sergeant a short time ago. what they did find inside were 12-15 sections of pipe with caps on them. listen right before our live shot at 5:00 as those devices were activated. they were discovered in the basement area of this apartment building at 6:05 jones street. this was after an anonymous tip came into san francisco police around midnight tonight. the bomb squad was called in. 75 who live in that building had to be cleared out. when we talked to the sergeant a short time ago he told us the

pipes were suspicious because they were found in a common area in fact basement and there also happened to be ammunition bullets in that same room. >> sections of the pipe being cut and cap suggest the items could possibly have been explosive in nature and combined with the ammunition that would trigger a red flag. >> reporter: so at this point it's unclear who the pipes belong to but the sergeant tells us san francisco police will be doing their investigation. there will also be an investigation done by the arson task force a joint task force involving the san francisco police department and the fire department and they will be trying to figure out who these pipes belong to, what exactly was going on in that basement area. but again several pipes, a dozen to 15 sections of pipe that were cut and capped found in a basement area. they look suspicious. the bomb squad called in this morning. the building has been cleared. streets have reopened. we are life this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu

channel 2 news. overnight news more gang violence in san jose. this time the victim was a teenager. ktvu tara moriarty is in san jose this morning as police are dealing with a soring crime rate. tara. >> reporter: 33 homicides this year in the city of san jose. 13 of them bang related. including the one that happened in the middle of the street behind me several hours ago. police have gathered up all of the evidence markers and just pulled the crime lab van out of here. the 18-year-old victim was on his scooter when he was approached by the gunman who asked him a question and shot him. the victim ran around the corner and fell on the sidewalk. he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. police believe this inside is gang related. and just hours before the shooting, a prayer vigil was held. stephanie who lost her friend fernando was there. he was in a gang related shooting earlier this year.

>> i know a lot of gang members and i just wish everything could stop, you know. we never know who is next. >> we have been here before. we are not happyn't it at all -- happy about it at all we will fix this. >> reporter: the police chief and the mayor have a news conference scheduled for 9:00 this morning at city hall where they plan to talk about this outbreak of violence and how the city is going to crack down on gangs. live in san jose tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. san jose man accused of killing a homeless woman with a sword is expected to appear in court this afternoon. 37-year-old reynolds quasarsed last -- was arrested last week. his victim was found on the sidewalk near the corner of the west san carlos street. she still hasn't been identified. this incident was san jose's 26th homicide of the year.

a teenagers accused of driving his carton a sidewalk in concord in a crash that killed a father and young daughter is due to appear before a judge today. he is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of felony vehicle manslaughter. the prosecutors say he drove on to a sidewalk back in april and hit and killed solomon and his daughter. family members of the victims are upset that this driver is being arraigned in juvenile court instead of being tried as an adult. new this morning north korea reportedly wants the u.s. to sign a permanent cease fire agreement. now according to ritters in ex- king north korea will not test its nuclear weapons. one of the sources claims country could be ready to test weapons in the next two weeks. north korea has stood by its long standing requirement that the u.s. sign a formal treaty to end the korean war and give diplomatic recognition. the name of a former navy seal that wrote a book about

the osama bin laden raid is no longer a mystery. despite attempts to remain anonymous, several news outlets have revealed his identity. coming up at 6:15 we will hear about his role in another dramatic seal mission when i go live to washington, d.c.. they really could possibly go all the way. this morning the city of petaluma is celebrating a big victory for the little league team that has a spot in the u.s. finals in the world series. ktvu noelle walker live in petaluma now with more coverage about the young stars. good morning, noelle. >> reporter: good morning, dave. it has to be hard to concentrate on the beginning of the school year here when your classmates are all over tv and making the headlines. take a look at this morning's headline. a grand way to win. >> this ball driven to left center field. over the wall for a grand slam. >> reporter: a grand slam homer by hans smith was just one of

the highlights. petaluma won a huge game against texas 11-1 to advance them to the u.s. championship game that is tomorrow. that game was called after just five innings because of the mercy rule. hometown fans have been watching the nationals on the big screen. this morning we talked to people that are just beaming with petaluma pride. >> it's a great story for petaluma. it's a great light that shines on the city. amazed by how well the kids are doing. >> reporter: saturday's game is against tennessee. that is the same team that sent petaluma into the losers bracket. they are proving them wrong since then. the winner after that will go on to play for the world championship titles. reporting live noelle walker. >> those kids are fun to watch. 6:07 is the time. let's check in with sal. >> all right pam and dave the

traffic is moving along pretty well around the bay area if you are driving on highway 4 we will start there. traffic is going to be busy coming up to the willow pass grade with no mayor problems. if you are driving on 680 southbound, the traffic there moves very nicely from the benicia bridge, concord to walnut creek. bay bridge toll plaza has not become really thick. this is the first week back to school for a lot of people it will be interesting to see what this friday looks like. santa clara valley northbound 17, 85, 280 all these freeways off to a good start. let's go to rosemary. 25 minutes or so until the official sunrise and the sky all right lighting up. partly cloudy mostly clear. the bay area as well as the coast and parts of the north bay waking up with fog and low clouds. the trough you see hanging off the coastline going to bring us additional cooling into the weekend. today a lot like yesterday but

time now 6:12. got to see this new video. dramatic rescue a mother and her young son falling off on to train tracks. she just fell. she was holding her four-year- old son. she walked right off the platform. fell on to the tracks. dropped her son. a good samaritan jumped down on to the tracks rescued both of them. they are okay. commuters say they see a lot of falls involving people who are just not paying attention around those tracks. american journalist is missing in syria. 31-year-old austin has reported for the washington post. he's not contacted his editors nor his family in more than a week. he spent time with rebel fighters after entering syria

in may. the u.s. state department is now look into the case. pentagon officials say they have identified the former navy seal who has written the tell all book about the raid that killed osama bin laden. ktvu alison burns is in our ash washington, d.c. newsroom and tell us there are worries about his security and whether he is revealing too many seal secret. >> reporter: on the book due out september 11 he uses the name mark owens. but they are reporting his real name even though his publisher and pentagon are requesting he stay anonymous. the publisher of the book no easy day says he's trying to set the record straight about the mission but the pentagon and cia have not reviewed the contents and there are worries he is revealing classified details and putting himself and other navy seals in personal danger. >> i can guarantee you will he will guys knocking on his door.

>> reporter: the pun accomplisher has revealed he grew up in alaska. was also part of that high seas rescue of an american captain held by sow mall lee -- somali pirates and was present at osama bin laden's death. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. >> new this morning oakland police investigating the early morning shooting of two people. it happened about 1:00 this morning. police say a man and a woman drove up to highland hospital. both of them had been shot. the shooting happened about three miles away on 14th avenue and foothill. so far no arrests have been made. oakland leaders want to persuade opponents of five new billboards in west oakland that the signs are actually for the good of the city. the billboards would be on the oakland army base. advertising money from the signs would help pay for job tripping at the newly expanded port facility. but the group called make

oakland beautiful says two will be ill rule named. new documentary about the pollutions will be shown tonight in the bay area at a fundraiser to help get that movie into the theaters. >> they played for so many people in so many different styles. >> those guys are called the wrecking crew. you heard of them. it profiles a core group of more than studio musicians. they played for artists like frank sinatra, elvis, the beach boys and many more. the makers of the movie struggle to get it in theaters because rights of the music costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. right now it's 6:16. let's check in with sal for traffic. is it getting busier out there? >> it is.

we don't have the same volume of traffic we've had in the last few days. let's go outside and take a look at 80 westbound. this is the east shore freeway. you can tell it's a little bit well it's just a little bit more crowded. but it's not really all that bad. we still have flashing lights on the right hand side there. westbound bay bridge toll plaza that traffic also looks nice coming into san francisco. it's not typical commute here. usually by now we have something going on. right now it looks very light. and if you are driving this morning in lafayette, this is highway 24 between walnut creek and oakland, that traffic is moving along very nicely. 6:17 let's go to rosemary. this cool down in store for your weekend. already temperatures are a bit below average for this time of year. we'll hold steady from yesterday meaning by the afternoon wide spread 70s to mid 80s for most of the inland areas. a few areas warming to 90 degrees. those will be the hottest spots. if you are going out to view america's cup another cool

calling people in attempts to sell the service even after being asked to stop calling. the goth says dish made millions of those calls in the last five years. dish denied the charges and said they will fight them. nearly 120,000 pacifiers are being recalled. they feature care bear figures. they were sold at discount dollar stores for about $1. the nipples can separate from the base and pose a choking hazard to children. no injuries have been reported so far. anyone that have the pacifiers should take them away from the kids and contact the company far refund. our time is 6:19. today cycling star lance armstrong is expected to be banned for life from cycling. and he is expected to be stripped of all seven the record seven tour defrank title. renae. >> reporter: that is right.

this crossing we know this all happened late last night. because lance armstrong says that he's dropping his fight against the doping allegations, the u.s. antidoping agency says that will be banning him forever from racing and they are also saying they want to strip him of the tour defrance titles. here's the thing the agency does not have the authority to do that. so realliness operating room strong will not use his -- the agency receives it has testimony from a former teammate to support the charges but armstrong has long since denied the allegations he actually sued the usda to stop the doping allegations. a federal judge dismissed that lawsuit and soon after that armstrong said that he would be dropping his fight.

go home. firefighters are trying to contain the pond rosa fire. it's 61% contained. full containment is expected next week. more than 900 homes are still threatened though. this fire is already destroyed 64 homes and 20 other buildings. preparations are under way for oakland gay pride festival this weekend. city leaders hosted a fundraiser at city hall last night. the event was also used to honor retired navy commander. she served as an openingly gay member of the military for years but was prosecuted for violating the don't act don't tell law. this years event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in uptown oakland and that includes an area terror families to enjoy. 6:25. the indy car series returns to

quickly as we get it. we'll bring you more details as it becomes available. we are also following develops news back here in san francisco. people are now being let back into their homes in the tenderloin that is after an evacuation early this morning. alex. >> reporter: the bomb scare is over. inside the san francisco apartment building. no explosives were found according to san francisco police but the building in question is an apartment building that is just about a block down from us here on jeans street. police were called in there after finding sections of pipe and they tell us now they found sections of pipe that had been capped at the ends. the bomb squad went in early this morning and activated those devices. that is the bang we heard coming from the building as we were waiting to go live at 5:00

this morning. shortly after that police gave the all clear. a sergeant told us what they found was 12-15 sections of pipe with caps on the end and substance of some kind inside of the pipes. they were all discovered inside the basement after on apartment at 605 jones street. the bomb squad was called in. 75 people had to be evacuated from this building. a sergeant tells us the suspicious looking pipes were found in a common area of the basement. there was also ammunition found inside that room as well. the capped pipes turned out not to contain explosives but certainly officers didn't want to take any chances. >> it was a misunderstanding but you have to understand that when you see sections of pipe capped off, the first thing that comes to mind the potential this is an explosive device. >> reporter: now san francisco's arson task force will be doing an investigation trying to figure out what was going on in that basement. who these pipes belong to.

people who were evacuated from the apartment building they are now going back home and all the streets in this area that have been closed down for some time are back open. we are live this morning in san francisco alex savidge. time is 6:33. overnight news san jose police investigating that city's 33rd homicide of the year. an 18-year-old man was shot and killed in the area of south king road and burr debt drive. that shooting was gang related. just hours earlier in a separate attack a man was wounded in a drive by shooting on fair avenue. the 40-year-old victim is a male nurse he was grazed in the leg. police say he is not connected to any gang and not clear why he was shot. coming up in ten minutes how the city's police chief in san jose this morning will talk about this and deal with the city's rising violence. new this morning a man accused in a shooting and bombing rampage in norway will serve time behind bars.

a norwegian court declared anders brevik sane today and sentenced him to ten years in prison. the sentence can be extended as long as an inmate is considered dangerous. he has admitted to killing 77 people and wounding more than 240 others when he bombed central oslo this year and a yo new details shedding light about the former graduate student accused in that deadly colorado movie shooting new month. new records show james holmes failed a key exam just six weeks before the shooting rampage. documents also show that he made threats and was banned from the college. now is the school is denying the claims that led to a criminal background check on holmes more details are expected to be revealed next week in court. time now 6:35. in election 2012 news a new poll out showing the race for

the white house at the moment is a virtual tie. it's a fox news secure fair that found 44% of likely voters supporting president obama and vice president joe biden. 45% favored mitt romney and paul ryan. the former presidential nomination process at the republican national convention will begin earlier than usual. delegates will begin the roll call vote to nominate mitt romney. they are reportedly starting early about possible disruption from protestors and from tropical storm isaac. president obama has no campaign events today. he will travel to camp david later this evening. next week he is scheduled to visit iowa state university, colorado state university, and university of virginia and charlottesville. democratic national convention is set to kick off on labor day in charlotte, north carolina. time now 6:36.

time to talk about little league baseball and petaluma's little league team came out swimming they have earned a spot in the u.s. finals of a little league world series. ktvu noelle walker is live in petaluma with more details about the hometown team that is making headlines around the world now. noelle. >> reporter: there is a lot of excitement here in petaluma. the junior high started classes earlier this week without some noted students. we know exactly where they are. take a look at this mornings headline. they are making a name for themselves and the city of petaluma in the little league world series. >> this ball driven to left center field and over the wall for a grand slam. >> reporter: the petaluma nationals won the elimination game over texas yesterday in grand fashion. heavy hitter hans smith hit a grand slam. that game ended after five innings when petaluma kicked in the mercy rule with their 11-1

victory. fans at home have been watching their boys of summer on the big screen at a downtown neat perp lots of excitement here. we spoke to the kid's principal. >> all of a sudden you look at that and realize those kids are on a national stage. it's exciting and we know all the parents and kids. it's not like good play it's like good play austin. we know exactly who they are. >> reporter: so on saturday they play tennessee at 12:30. that is for the u.s. national title. that is the same team that sent petaluma into the quote losers bracket which they have moved to be wrong ever since. this morning i spoke to the nationals manager on the phone. we have learned from him and his son. >> we will look forward to that. that is good. let's check in with sal who is checking the toll plaza. how does it look? >> it looks pretty good pam and dave. although we have people showing

up but it is not as bad as it normally is. you can see it's backed up for a little bit and there are no major problems getting on to the bridge and getting into the city. it is lighter than normal but we do have a little bit of a crowd. just a couple minute delay and the metering lights are on. moving along to the san mateo bridge. it's foggy just as rosemary mentioned. that may mean delayed flights at san francisco international airport. give yourself plenty of extra time if you are flying out or expecting someone to fly in. this morning in san jose we are off to a very nice start with only a little bit of slowing on northbound 101 approaching the 280 interchange. it's 6:39 let's go to rosemary. good morning, to you. and that fog not just along the peninsula and coast, we've got it over parts of the north bay. low clouds and patchy dense fog reported in areas ovocenter rosa. mostly sunny inland.

waking up partly cloudy to mostly clear. that westerly breeze through fairfield this morning not as strong and robust as yesterday morning. a little breezy through the delta though. into areas again near santa rosa, pedestrian lieu ma, and novato where we are seeing patchy dense fog. cool 48-degrees. petaluma and novato reporting temperatures in the upper 40s. an extra layer perhaps as you get out the door in your area. around the bay area most of us waking up in the low to mid to upper 50s. 57 in oakland. 53 in concord. low pressure heading our way. that will bring us a cooling trend in time for the weekend. the long range models want to bring a second and third trough our way to follow up with this one that will continue this mild pattern. all the way into the end of the month. so we'll see if those long range models materialize.

normal. >> welcome back. good morning, to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we following for you right now at 6:44. san francisco building has been deemed safe after it was evacuated hours ago after a possible explosive devices. the building son jones street. police found ammunition and several pipes cut and capped. police later determined those devices were not explosive. a water main break in the oakland hills caused damage at homes overnight. now it happened on crest avenue near golf links road. east bay mud crews were out there all night cleaning things up. thousands of people are expected in san francisco for the america's cup world series races. events are scheduled every day through sunday starting with the quarter finals today. muni is adding extra waterfront bus lines to handle the crowds. overnight news a teenager was shot and killed in san jose. this was the eighth homicide in

the past week and a half. ktvu tara moriarty is at the san jose city hall with the important announcement from city leaders later this morning. tara. >> reporter: in two hours the police chief and mayor will be holding a press conference here at city hall to discuss the recent serge in violence. so far this year in the city of san jose there have been 33 homicides and more than a third of them have been gang related. including the most repeat one that happened last night just before 11:00. an 18-year-old was gunned down on his scooter. it happened near south king road and burdett drive. just hours before that shooting a prayer vigil was held for victims of violence. >> we all want this to stop but it's getting worse every day. >> reporter: outside the local church police chief chris moore spoke responding to a letter that happened earlier this week urging the highway patrol to

step in. >> but i will tell you, if i ever came to a point we needed outside resources, i would be the first to ask. we're not there yet. >> reporter: one officer we spoke to said the chp is not scheduled to handle gang violence the way that police are. we will let you know what happens at this news conference. late leaders will be investigating the news conference. live from san jose i'm tara moriarty. time is 6:47. new reports this morning that a man that drove his cadillac escalade into the ocean at pebble beach is a member of the singing group overtone. witnesses say that whitest coo laid was speeding when it core recented after the 17-mile drive yesterday morning. now the driver identified as valentino was able to escape from the car but he was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence.

here is video of the group singing there. they are an a cappella group. managed by the wife of clint eastwood. he has been featured on her reality show called mrs. eastwood and company. they are investigating the cause of a house fire in brentwood. it's happening on second street. no one was inside that home when the fire started just after 5:00 this morning. a big grass fire along interstate 80 in vacaville is under investigation. that started at 8:00 last night on a hillside off pleasant valley road. it burned 150 acres but firefighters managed to keep it away from the homes. multiple fire agents were called out to help and it did take fire outers 2.5 hours to put that fire out. the owners of the sacramento kicks are denying reports this morning that they are talking about moving the team to virginia beach. virginia business journal is reporting that the family will

where traffic on 101 and 280 still looking good. it's still pretty foggy. and here in downtown san jose northbound on the right there you can see traffic is moving along nicely. 6:nine o'clock let's go to rosemary. good morning, to you it's a nice start around the coast and on the bay. a little bit of drizzle over parking lots of the coast. and you can see there blue sky up above the low cloud deck. the marine layer 1500 feet this morning. a trough pulling out of the gulf of alaska and heading our way in time for the weekend will bring us additional cooling. for today only subtle changes in the forecast. saturday and sunday additional 3-5 degrees of cooling expected for the afternoon. mostly cloudy and cool at the coast today. we will see a mid to late morning clearing for the bay area. mild conditions for the afternoon. inland waking up with sunshine, warm conditions, although running a tad cool for late august. giving you a view of the forecast by 11:00 or so.
