area ago. the gunman was firing at people t was a sawed off -- it was a sawed off shotgun. this is a very busy part of new york city. another witness said there were a lot of tourists, waiting to get inside. you can see traffic is blocked off. 5th and 34th. there is construction. tourists, lot of chaos at this point. we're monitoring the story, we'll bring you updates. back to local news an evacuation has been lifted in the tenderloin neighborhood. a building on jones street was

evacuated after devices were found inside that were suspicious. we have been there since 4:30 this morning and what was found. >> what the police found is pipe that had been cut and capped. they discovered this in the basement of an apartment building, it is on the right- hand side. they figured out the mime -- pipes did not contain explosives. that was the bang we heard as we were waiting to go live this morning. after that, police gave the all clear and it was cleared, people were able to go home a sergeant said they found 15 sections of pipe with caps on the ends and a substance inside the pipes. the sergeant would not get into specifics about what that was t was discovered in the basement

of the apartment building at 605 jones street after a tip came in. the pipes were found in a common area of the basement and there was map eye nishon -- ammo. it was a scary moment. >> my cat was in there, i was like what. is this for real. i'm going to school this was two hours ago. then the whole time i felt like i was in a dream. >> reporter: the arson taskforce will do a full investigation, trying to determine what happened in the basement and who the sections may belong to. officers, we walked down and saw they have that basement area blocked off, they are considering it a crime scene. they will be there investigating for another couple of hours. but the people who are in the

building they are now home and all the streets are back open. live in san francisco, alex savidge. firefighters are investigating the cause of a house fire in brentwood. we are told no one was inside the home when the fire started after 5:00 this morning. but a neighborhood credits her dog with waking her up and alerting her to the fire. >> she pulled my blanket. i said what happened? i followed her then i saw the fire. we got up and out of the house. she saved our lives. >> one firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. people in the oakland hills are cleaning up after a water main break t was at 11:30 last

allison burns. an american report ser missing this morning in syria. austin tice has reported for the washington post. the 31-year-old has not contacted his editors or family in more than a week. he spent time with rebel fighters after entering syria in may. the state department is looking into the case. this morning the fbi is investigating threats made against a missouri senate candidate who made national headlines with his comments about rape. todd akin said women who are victims of leg mate rape may not be pregnant because their bodies may shut down. the fbi is investigating threats against akin, his wife and staff concerning rape and other violent acts. he has apologized and some conservatives have rallied around him. a missing missouri teen is

now safe after escaping from a house in southwest illinois where she says she was held captive as a sex slave. authorities raided the house yesterday. the now 17-year-old was reported missing two years ago. now she escaped from the house this week. she reported she was raped and got pregnant by her captor. police believe that the man's mother helped without that crime. >> and caught on tape a rescue of a mother andson from train tracks in massachusetts. look to the right. the mother holding her son walked right off the platform and fell on to the tracks, dropping her son. a person jumped down on to the tracks, rescued both of them and the mom and son are okay. commuters see falls involving people who just are not paying attention. at first it appeared to be a suspected case of vandalism but now it is what some are calling one of the worst art

a pit bull that attacked a horse could be put down. charlie was turned over to animal control yesterday after a hearing at city hall. the police officer eric evans was emotional when he talked about the attack on his partner, a horse. the incident happened this month at crissy field. >> there was ligaments and tendons and muscle damage there is a possibility he may not heal fully and may not be able to return to police work. >> the owner said charlie 'twas an off leash area and suggested that the police horses should avoid the area. court officials will decide if the pit bull will be put down. city college of san francisco is trying to save the accreditation. back in july, the board found that several school violations.

oakland t has an area for families to enjoy. a man from union city is accused of taking a blow torch and attacking his daughter while he was high on drugs. police arrested the 44-year-old on monday. they say under the influence of meth. the daughter in her 20s said he was hallucinating and thought he saw figures and faces on her hand. that's when he picked up a blow torch and tried to burn her. she called for help and was not seriously hurt. police say that police are looking for four men who robbed a jewelry store in broad daylight t was caught on tape. video shows the men were in hoodies and masks -- masks are a racing into a jewelry store. they pointed their guns and started smashing cases filled with watches and jewelry. the store owner, his mother and employee were in the store at
