. good morning, everyone. welcome to mornings on 2. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. let's check in with rosemary for a quick look at the saturday morning forecast. >> good morning to you. slightly cooler day in store for the afternoon. this morning, the sun is up, but most of us under a deck of low clouds. a little mist and drizzle along the coast. most of us holding in the low to mid-50s. we will again be slightly cooler for the afternoon. only subtle changes in the extended forecast. i'll line this up, show you numbers for today, coming up. well, happening now, a crusade against the growing violence in san jose. at this hour, civic leaders are holding a prayer service at rosa park. we want to show you a live picture of the proceeding, if we have it. we are working on that. there it is. you can see people gathering at the park there this morning. this ceremony, really just the start of a day-long event to protest crime and to remember recent victims. now, just last night, friends of the city's 33rd homicide victim set up a small memorial, where

the 18-year-old was shot and killed on thursday night. city leaders are also vowing to stop the rising homicide rate and their plan includes a special police unit dedicated to cracking down on gang violence. >> you have officers that are specially trained, like the metro folks and the merge folks and all of our special operations people out, working, stopping these gang members, finding weapons, taking them off the street. >> the city has ear marked $800,000 for police overtime, but the department will not ask outside agencies, such as the chp, for assistance. now, in the next hour, a spiritual walk will start at capital and mclaughlin. marchers will arrive at roosevelt park at 1:00 p.m. for speeches and closing ceremony. overnight in oakland, a 12-year-old girl was shot inside her house. police say bullets were fired at about 3:30 this morning along the 2300 block of church street. a lieutenant on the scene says it appears the gunman was targeting the house. >> we found a female juvenile 12

years old, had been struck once and obviously a lot of rounds were fired. >> officers have not released information about the gunman, but say the girl is in stable condition. we're also following the investigation into a fatal shooting in west oakland that also injured a child. police say they found a man who had been shot around 8:00 last night on sycamore street. he later died at the hospital. officers also found a child who had been grazed in the neck by a bullet. that child is in stable condition. police have not released the child's age or information on what led up to that shooting. new this morning, the chp is investigating a fatal crash involving multiple vehicles on highway 4 in concord. at least two vehicles were involved in the collision just before 10:40 last night, just east of the solano way off ramp. one of those cars went off the road. the chp also says one vehicle

hit a pole. cal trans was on scene making repairs. a fire gutted a mobile home in sunnyvale overnight. those flames broke out just before 10:00 last night in a densely packed mobile home park. when firefighters arrived, the building was engulfed in flames, but crews did manage to keep that fire from spreading to other homes. one person was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. the cause of that fire, still under investigation. petaluma national, just hours away from the u.s. little league championship game. >> after taking down san antonio, texas 101-1 thursday night, petaluma will play tennessee. petaluma is looking for revenge. tennessee is the only team to beat them in the little league world series. the winner will advance to the world championship game tomorrow. ktvu's kara lieu is in williams port, pennsylvania and will have a live report for us in just

about 25 minutes. two quick-thinking children help police in fremont arrest three robbery suspects. police say a 10-year-old boy and his 16-year-old sister called 911 after they saw three men break into their house on nutman lane yesterday afternoon. the children hid in a locked closet and stayed on the phone with the police dispatcher. the officers got there just as the suspect started banging on that closet door, demanding those kids come out. >> she reminded me to pick up a bat. we stayed inside the master bedroom closet. >> police took the suspects into custody after a short chase. nothing was taken from the home and the children were not hurt. consumer electronics experts say apple's legal victory against its rival samsung will have far-reaching ramifications for consumers. the cupertino high tech giant apple accused korean spet tore samsung of stealing patented technology on mobile devices such as iphones and ipads. a san jose federal jury ruled in favor of apple in the $1 billion

judgment. >> potentially what will happen, it hasn't happened, it's at the discretion of judge koe, but potentially, all or many of the samsung products will be pulled from the market in the future. in the near term, at least, for consumers, this means fewer choices and as a result, higher prices. >> well, the jury found samsung's fascinating galaxy s phones infringed on apple's patents. analysts warn consumers might see fewer and more expensive smartphones and tablets using the android operating system. however, some experts say in the long-term, companies might be forced to develop more creative and distinct mobile devices. samsung says it will appeal the ruling. new this morning, at least 19 people have been killed and 53 more hurt in a refinery explosion in venezuela. that explosion happened around 1:00, after a gas leak at the anuay refinery in northwest

venezuela. nearby homes were damaged and venezuela's military has been called in to help with the response. the refinery is one of the largest in the world. venezuela sends much of its oil to the united states. in just a few hours, there will be another opportunity for people who g chevron refinery explosion to get some information. now, 14,000 people sought medical treatment after the richmond refinery caught fire. today's forum starts at 10:00 at the mt. zion baptist church, being put on by local attorney john burriss, being called a know your rights rally. participants include attorneys, medical professionals and environmentalists. right now, we are tracking tropical storm isaac, as it makes landfall in haiti. coming up at 7:15, we will tell you when the storm is expected to become a hurricane and track its path as it barrels right toward the florida coast. hundreds of people will walk around lake merritt this morning to honor a former ktvu broadcaster. faith lost her battle with breast cancer back in 2003.

the annual friends of faith breast cancer challenge helps raise funds for bay area men and women undergoing treatment for breast cancer. that walk begins at 9:00 this morning. >> friends of faith, just one of many events taking place today in the bay area. want to turn it over to rosemary now and see how it's looking out there today. >> for an early morning walk or run, we're actually in good shape. it's cool and cloudy around the bay this morning. we're seeing temperatures cool and even a little bit of mist and drizzle. damp start over parts of the coast. the rest of us with grew skies. far inland, partly cloudy to mostly clear skies. giving you a live look at just how soupy it is over the bay area this morning, arriving flights to sfo experiencing delays. no surprise there. you can barely see the bay bridge from this shot here. numbers are very similar to yesterday, within a few degrees for most of us, slightly warmer in santa rosa. a chilly start in recent days. upper 40s where santa rosa slipped to in the overnight hours. right about 50 degrees this morning. we've got mostly clear skies up above the low cloud deck. it will begin to burn off.

the marine layer is thicker than what we saw yesterday, brought on by this trough here that will continue to migrate closer to the coast. what does that mean for us? a cooler day for the afternoon. so the onshore breeze, light to moderate in most cases. a little robust through the delta this morning. gusts picking up to 29 miles an hour, so breezy and brisk through there this morning. the rest of us, dealing with light winds. the deeper marine layer, onshore breeze equals a cooler weekend. right now, 55 degrees in concord, 53 in fairfield, 50 degrees santa rosa, 57 livermore, 56 in san jose. along the peninsula, upper 50s redwood city, mountain view, mid to upper 50s in areas near palo alto. if you are going out to support or maybe run today for the friends of faith challenge, it will be 58 degrees and mostly cloudy, right about 9:00. then will turn partly cloudy by the second half of the morning, into the early afternoon. a look at your afternoon high, 75 expected for santa rosa today. 67 in berkeley. 66 in oakland.

valleys this morning. new allegations against pg&e by a top safety oversight official. the allegations come in a new regulatory filing urging the public utilities commission to impose sanctions on pg&e. the state official accuses the utility of continuing to place profits over safety and failing to deliver real change in the wake of the san bruno pipeline explosion. the disaster two years ago killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. pg&e spokesman told the san francisco chronicle the company's improvements to its gas pipeline system are real and not rhetoric. this morning, hurricane warnings and watches have been issued for parts of florida, as tropical storm isaac barrels its way towards the u.s. rick leventhal is live in tampa to explain when that storm could make landfall in the gulf coast and how it could affect the republican national convention. rick? >> reporter: good morning, claudine. those are very good questions. officials here watching this storm very closely, watching its track and watching those

predictions as to where isaac might go. right now, doesn't appear that tampa will take a direct hit and this coastal city hasn't seen a major hurricane since 1946. but even if isaac stays offshore in the gulf, its tropical storm force winds could extend out 150 miles or more. so there are very, very big concerns about monday's start of that rnc convention, because they will feel bad weather here in tampa. the storm hit haiti as a tropical storm, dumping at least 10 inches of rain on that island nation, causing a lot of problems there since there are many people still living in tents in haiti since that devastating earthquake back in 2010. in the meantime, isaac churns its way through the gulf, towards cuba, and the latest tracks have it headed right up the gulf coast of florida. it's going to smack into the florida keys. there are hurricane watches and warnings in effect for the keys and for much of south florida. then isaac starts to churn north through the very warm waters of the gulf of mexico. that's where it could strengthen

to at least a category 1, if not a weak category 2. so the governor warning residents, be prepared for this thing, very difficult to say exactly which way it's going to turn once it hits the gulf. most tracks have it heading up to the panhandle and maybe hitting pensacola late tuesday, into wednesday. but listen, monday is going to be a mess here in tampa. and you've got 70,000 delegates and visitors and protesters planning to be here in this city for the start of the republican national convention. it's going to be wet. they are going to see bands of torrential rains, heavy winds, possible localized flooding here, claudine, so it will be a very messy monday for the start of this convention. how bad? still a little too early to say. >> okay. we'll keep an eye on it. thanks, rick, reporting live from tampa, florida this morning. and as rick said, organizers of next week's republican national convention are monitoring the storm, but say they have no plans to cancel the convention. isaac is expected to dump inches of rain and bring strong winds to the tampa area.

more than 50,000 republicans are expected to fly to tampa in the coming days. this will not be the first time severe weather has impacted the republican national convention. four years ago, organizers in minneapolis significantly scaled back some events out of respect for the victims of hurricane gustav. happening now, congressman paul ryan is joined with mitt romney there, campaigning in the battle ground state of ohio this morning. both men have stumped there individually, but this is the first time they are there together. although ryan went to school in that state, a new poll shows barack obama with a 6-point lead in ohio. romney himself is finding himself in a bit of controversy after a remark he made in michigan. that's where he and his wife were both born. >> anne was born at hen friday ford hospital. i was born at harper hospital. [ cheers & applause ] >> no one's ever asked to see my

birth certificate. they know this is the place that we were born and raised. [ cheers & applause ] >> romney tried to clarify that statement later, saying that he was only joking and there's no question as to where president obama was born, but the obama campaign says romney is embracing antiimmigration conservatives who are pushing the birther movement. in this morning's weekly address, president obama pushed to strengthen medicare. >> growing up as the son of a single mom, i was raised with the help of my grandparents. so i saw how important things like medicare and social security were in their lives. and i saw the peace of mind it gave them. >> the president says medicare is about keeping a promise to millions of seniors who put in a lifetime of hard work. he claims republicans want to turn medicare into a voucher program that won't keep up with rising medical costs. oh opponents of a new san mateo county jail will step you have efforts this afternoon. the $150 million facility is scheduled to open in 2015, but

opponents say the money would be better spent on treatment and rehab programs. a meeting is planned at 1:00 today to talk about ways to stop the project. the county board of supervisors and sheriff cite jail overcrowding as the need for expansion. employees of the doubletree hotel in san jose are asking guests to sleep elsewhere until a new labor contract is approved. >> if he won't get a contract, we don't get no wages! >> housekeepers, cooks and front desk staff say they have been working without a contract for more than a year. they are asking for a raise and to maintain their current health benefits. the employees went on a four-day strike back in june and say they are still deciding whether to call for another strike. the hotel has not commented on the contract dispute. in alameda county, a judge ruled that two oakland motels that police say are used for prostitution will have to shut

down for one year. the ruling affects the economy inn on east 12th street and the national lodge on international boulevard. the city of oakland sued the motels under state law that makes owners responsible for prostitution on their properties. in addition, the motel owners must pay the city's legal fees and tens of thousands of dollars in fines. lance armstrong is not letting his drug ban stop him from cycling. he is scheduled to ride in a mountain bike race in aspen today. he'll then run a marathon tomorrow. the u.s. antidoping agency stripped armstrong of his seven tour de france victories and permanently banned him from professional cycling. however, his charity, the live strong foundation, says it will continue to stand by him. >> long-term, within the cancer community, lance armstrong is a hero. he has done so much great work here at the foundation, helping us raise close to $500 million to serve cancer survivors. >> armstrong started the

foundation after beating cancer himself in the 1990s. it funds programs for cancer awareness and medical research. the san francisco 49ers have become the first nfl team to release an antigay bullying video. n]♪ >> it gets better. >> it gets better. >> the video is part of the national it gets better project, meant to combat bullying, as well as suicide and depression among young gay people. two defensive tackles starred in the video. the san francisco giants made a video back in may. two bay area sisters who won olympic gold will be honored in their hometown of danville today. >> this is heavy! >> very heavy, huh! >> this is video of 19-year-old maggie stephan showing off her gold medal at a bay area fitness club last week. she and her 25-year-old sister jessica helped lead the u.s. water polo team to victory in

. the port of oakland is now on plan to turn one of its marine terminals into a new stadium for the a's. the executive director says a stadium could be built on the 51-acre howard terminal site in about five years. the location is adjacent to jack london square and it's currently being used by matson shipping.

a's owner lou wolf said he wants to move his team to san jose, but it's still not clear if major league baseball's territorial rules will allow him to do that. several blocks of oakland's chinatown will be shut down for the 23rd annual street fest. 7th to 11th street and broadway to harrison will be closed. there will be live entertainment, food, vendors, crafts, even a children's carnival. it goes from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today as well as tomorrow. and streets in san francisco's chinatown will be shut down tomorrow for sunday streets. parts of grant, jackson, battery, and washington streets will be closed to vehicles from 11:00 a.m. to 4 4:00 p.m. there will also be live music and much more. 7:25, still a little foggy. we saw the golden gate bridge. foggy out there this morning. rosemary, when will it burn off? >> we are looking at the midmorning to late morning burnoff. the marine layer is a little thicker than it was yesterday

morning. it's going to take a while. onshore breeze blowing through the delta this morning. fairfield reporting 20 miles an hour, gusting to 30. concord, light breeze. port chicago, also reporting gusty conditions. the delta breeze, blowing pretty strong there, through the delta. that will continue for the afternoon with gusty conditions through the bay as well for america's cup viewing today. bring a wind breaker. it's going to be a cool day in the city. forecast, widespread 50s this morning, even inland areas that had been enjoying the sunshine, the last few mornings, now waking up with grew skies. so the marine layer farther inland this morning. by noon time, 60s around the east bay and the peninsula. we've got 70s, low 70s for inland spots. a mild one. into the afternoon, notice a few pockets of orange. areas like fairfield and concord, the forecast model not even picking up on 80 degrees for fairfield or concord. we're expecting 80 for those

areas. 83 for livermore. mid to upper 80s far inland. extended forecast, even cooler for tomorrow. monday, tuesday, into wednesday, we slowly climb back to seasonal average, we'll call it, but looks like late in the week, another trough swings through and brings temperatures down. end of august looks like it could be fairly mild. i'll take a look at the extended forecast, coming up in a bit. mountain lion is back in the wild this morning, after running loose in downtown reno. the 100-pound animal was shot with a tranquilizer gun yesterday, right outside of harrah's casino. now, witnesses say it was running around the plaza area outside the hotel and even tried to get inside the casino. wildlife officers eventually found it hiding under a stage and captured it. >> it was dangerous because of where it was. it wasn't dangerous because of the behavior it was displig. and that's really important. >> people were told to stay indoors while that big cat was tracked down. nobody was hurt and the mountain

lion was actually tagged and fitted with a gps collar before it was returned to the wild. well, in just about 90 minutes, top education officials will be meeting in the south bay. >> plus, dramatic video of a police shootout at the empire state building.

. that was just one of the many memorable moments for petaluma at the little league world series. they take one last critical step towards the international championship game. welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. a big day for a big time team. the pride of petaluma, petaluma national will take the field looking to become the best team in america. we are live in williams port, pennsylvania where the game will be played. lot of excitement brewing this morning, cara. >> reporter: so much excitement, so much energy pulsing through this small town right now. take a look at the field. this is where the game's going to be played later today. also, so much excitement and energy pumping through the petaluma little league families and the community who made the trip out here to williams port. folks have been going nuts over petaluma national success, no more so than when they beat texas 11-1 on thursday to

advance to the u.s. final. these boys are all 12 and 13 years old. they play tennessee today at 12:30 california time. now, bay area fans, especially there in the north bay, are loving every minute of this. hundreds have been watching the games live from petaluma movie theaters, bars, restaurants, even senior centers. this has been such a great run for the local team, fans excited to follow their success. i spoke to coach trevor termay about the anticipation of playing the biggest game they have ever been a part of. >> it's been a dream. the other coaches and myself, since we started to coach our kids when they were about 4 or 5 years old. so it's always been a dream, just to go to the little league world series, like anybody's dream. and now that we're here, it's -- you don't want to wake up. it's too, it's too good to be true. >> reporter: i asked the coach what he plans to tell the kids before today's game. he tells them he's just going to

have them stay focused and tell them this is like any other game they have ever played. the distance between the bases is exactly the same as what they have seen all season. the pitching mound is the same. everything is the same, it's just another game. he's going to just tell them to stay focused and enjoy every minute of this. we'll be here all weekend long for the little league world series and bring you reports throughout the weekend. live in williamsport, cara lui, channel 2news. 7:30 now. in less than 30 minutes, people are expected to gather in the south bay to remember the recent victims of violence in san jose. that city's homicide count continues to rise and city leaders are vowing action. ktvu's allie rasmus joins us now live with what's been happening today. >> reporter: claudine, before that walk gets started, there was a group of people who got together here at raza park in san jose to have a spiritual ceremony. the group, black berets wanted to come together to have this ceremony to protest the recent

violence in san jose. 33 people have been killed in the city this year and police say many of those killings have been gang-related. spiritual leaders with this organization say more community and cultural events need to happen to bring about change in the community. >> we're trying to tell our people the community of san jose is basically, it's time for us to stand up as one person, one people, so we can take our streets back, our parks back. >> reporter: now, in response to the recent violence, san jose police and city leaders say they have assigned a special unit of officers in the department to focus entirely on gang-related crimes. now, they have also allocated about $800,000 in overtime to pay for those resources. you in, the ceremony this morning here at the park, was part of a day of events. they will also be hosting a peace march, going to be happening at 8:00. coming up at 8:00, we'll be

following that, as they begin that walk. live in san jose, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2news. a program to keep richmond students in school and off the streets is being threatened by budget cuts. the program calls for richmond police to stop and question school-age children spotted on the streets during the hours of a normal school day. children are given a citation to appear in juvenile court and interviewed to find out why they are not in school. >> it's been effective. we've stopped over 400 kids during that two school year period. >> the program has been so successful, it has actually attracted the attention of other east bay cities and even new york city mayor michael bloomberg, but police say a proposal to eliminate the juvenile court in richmond puts the program in jeopardy. if eliminated, officers say fewer families would show up to the hearings, because they would have to travel to the east side of the county. well, some of california's top education officials are in campbell this morning, looking for ways to improve the state

school system, despite deep financial cuts. recent numbers show schools have lost $20 billion in funding during the past four years and 38,000 full-time teachers have lost their jobs. state superintendent of public schools tom tore lickson plans to talk about challenges at a free community pancake breakfast. it starts at 9:00 this morning at the campbell community center. a 17-year-old concord boy has pleaded not guilty to two charges of vehicular manslaughter. police say the teenager, who we are not identifying because he's a minor, was driving that white suv on treat boulevard in concord on april 7th. authorities say the teen lost control and struck and killed a father and his 9-year-old daughter who were riding their bikes. outside the martinez courthouse yesterday, the victim's family said they were disappointed the 17-year-old will not be tried as an adult. >> i lost two loved ones. it's not going to bring any of them back. all i want is just justice, that's it. >> a pretrial hearing is

scheduled for september 7th in juvenile court. new york police have released surveillance video of its confrontation with a gunman outside the empire state building. although we have decided not to show the officers actually shooting and killing the suspect, jeffrey johnson. the first few seconds of the video show a calm scene, with people milling about the street. we have spot shadowed johnson at the top part of the screen, walking into view. two officers chased after him and that's when buy standers ran away frantically. nine of them were hurt in that confrontation. they suffered grazed wounds or other minor injuries. three people remain in the hospital. it is believed that all the victims were hit by stray gunfire from police. the two officers fired 16 shots. authorities are promising a thorough investigation into the actions of the police officers, as well as the suspect. johnson was a t-shirt designer laid off from his job about a year ago. investigators say he hid behind a car yesterday morning, then accosted a former colleague and

shot him five times. . new this morning, everyone got out safely from a hayward home that caught fire overnight. firefighters say as many as five people were inside that home when the fire started in the garage around 5:30. everyone was able to get out of the house. one person did cut their hand. no firefighters were hurt. a huge wildfire in northern california could be contained by monday. firefighters got the upper hand on the ponderosa fire yesterday, despite the strong winds. when the fire started almost a week ago, it has burned more than 28,000 acres. it has also destroyed 64 homes and 20 other buildings. three fire stations in contra costa county could reopen soon. the east contra costa county fire district just learned it will bet $8 million in federal funding, enough to reopen stations in brentwood, bethel island, and knightson, which were shut down last month. it also makes it possible to rehire 27 firefighters. the district's board must

. breaking news into the newsroom, fire investigators are investigating the cause of this fire. the building you're looking at used to house a well-known walnut creek restaurant. firefighters say this fire started early this morning on north main street at the former location of la barage restaurant. you could actually see the smoke from the 680 as you rolled through that area. you can see flames were going pretty well, but that building was vacant when the fire started, so they are still trying to figure out the cause.

including his father. his life sentence conviction was overturned 12 years ago. he started driving for lux core cab last month. a bill allowing california to opt out of some parts of the federal secure communities program now awaits the governor's signature. the bill is intended to protect illegal immigrants from deportation when arrested for lower level offenses. that means california law enforcement would only have to check the fingerprints of serious and violent offenders rather than all illegal immigrants as required under the federal program. california students will soon have another option when it comes to college. the california state university system plans to launch a next year. it could expand enrollment by 250,000 students. right now, about 427,000 people are enrolled at cal state's 23 campuses. university officials say this will give students more options, since many schools are seeing cutbacks in the number of classes they offer on campus. college students are having a hard time paying for college

it's been resolved now and they are about to move into a new studio. tampering with the tower could be a federal offense. one man who testified against jerry sandusky has now filed a lawsuit against the university. the man was called victim 1 at sandusky's trial. he blames penn state for how its top officials dealt with abuse complaints against the coach. the lawsuit claims the behavior of penn state officials show they thought more about the school's reputation and economic interests than the safety of the children. sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of 45 criminal counts for sexual abuse of boys. a new study is raising questions about the safety of soldiers during military training. the study by the military found nearly 6% of soldiers experienced concussions during combat training courses at fort hood. that's now raising serious questions about whether or not soldiers have been deployed to combat without even realizing they suffered a mild brain injury. since 2000, the military says

. the san jose earthquakes are expected to deliver big news tonight. club president dave cuvall will announce their plans to break ground on a new stadium. the city of san jose gave its approval earlier this year for 18,000-seat venue. that announcement will take place tonight before the earthquakes take on the colorado

rapids. fans are welcome to attend. the organizers of the reno air race have set up a fund for the families of those killed or injured in last year's deadly plane crash. last september, a modified world war ii p-51 mustang crashed in front of the grand stands. eleven people were killed and about 70 injured. administrators say the $77 million fund will allow people to get compensation without the cost and delay of going to court. those who filed claims won't be able to file lawsuits against the reno air race organization. well, the tsa says it does not plan to change its policy of requiring airline passengers to take off their shoes, despite spending millions researching that policy. the "new york times" reports the tsa rejected four scanners specially designed for shoes because they failed to adequately detect explosives. the tsa started requiring passengers to remove their shoes at security check points after richard reed tried to blow up an international flight with explosives concealed in his shoes. a small number of passengers who

a mountain lion is back in the wild after running loose in downtown reno. the 100-pound animal was shot with a tranquilizer gun yesterday right outside of harrah's casino. it's sloping -- sleeping peacefully. witnesses say it was running around outside and even tried to get inside the casino. wildlife officers were able to capture it outside. >> it was dangerous because of where it was. it wasn't dangerous because of the behavior it was displaying. that's really important.

new allegations against pg&e by a top safety oversight official. according to the chronicle, the allegations come in a new regulatory filing urging the public utilities commission to impose sanctions on pg&e. the state official accuses the utility of continuing to place profits over safety and failing to deliver real change in the wake of the san bruno pipeline explosion. that disaster two years ago killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. a pg&e spokesman told the chronicle that the company's improvements to its gas

pipeline system are real and not rhetoric. some of california's top education officials are in campbell this morning looking for ways to improve the state's school system despite deep financial cuts. now, recent numbers show schools have lost $20 billion in funding during the past four years. 38,000 full-time teachers have lost their jobs. state superintendent of public schools plans to talk about some of the challenges at a free community pancake breakfast. it's happening right now at the campbell community center. california students will have a new option when it comes to option. the california state university system plans to launch a state- wide online university next year. that could expand enrollment by 2 a,000 -- 250,000 students. right now about 42 0,000 people are enrolled at the three campuses. university officials say this will give students more omtions since many schools are seeing cutbacks in the number of

street. two officers chased of a johnson and that's when bystanders ran away frantically. well, nine of those bystanders were hurt in the confrontation and suffered grave wounds or other minor injuries. three people are still in the hospital. it's believed all of them were hit by stray gunfire from the police. the two officers fired 16 shots. authorities are promising a thorough investigation into the actions of the police officers as well as the suspects. johnson was a t-shirt designer laid off from his job a year ago. investigators -- investigators say he hid behind a bar and then accosted a former colleague shorting him five times. some experts say the legal victory for apple against samsung will have far-reaching implications. apple accused samsung of stealing patented technology on ipads and iphones. a san jose federal jury ruled in favor of apple in the $1 billion judgment.

back. all i wanted was justice. that's it. a pretrial hear something scheduled for september 7th in juvenile court. a huge wildfire in northern california could be contained by monday. firefighters got the upper hand on the ponderosa fire yesterday, despite strong winds. now, that fire started almost a week ago and has burned more than 28,000 acres in tehama and shasta counties. it's also destroyed 64 homes and 20 other buildings. three fire stations in contra costa county will be reopen soon. the east contra costa fire district learned that it just received an $8 million federal funding grant. that would be enough to reopen the stations in brentwood, bethel island which was shot down next month department would also make it possible to rehire 27 firefighters. the district's board must officially accept the two-year grant before the stations can reopen and start retiring. hundreds of thousands of californians have been hit by a big bill for a fire prevention

the san jose earthquakes expected to deliver some big news tonight. the club president will announce the team's plans to break ground on a new stadium. the city of san jose gave its approval earlier this year for an 18,000-seat stadium. the announcement will take place at 6:00 tonight right before the earthquakes take on the colorado rapid and fans are welcome to attend. the port of oakland is on board with the plan to turn one of its marine terminals into a new ballpark for the oakland as. omar benjamin says the stadium could be built on the howard terminal site in about five years. the location is adjacent to jack london square and currently used by matson chipping. the as owner says he wants to move the club to san jose but it's still not clear if mlb's territorial rules will allow limb to do that. we're exactly one week away from the cal bears football season opener. they will play nevada at the

tranquilizer gun outside of harrah's casino. he even triped to get inside the casino at one point. wildlife officers eventually found it hiding under a stage and captured it. >> it was dangerous because of where it was. it wasn't dangerous because of the behavior it was displaying. that's really important. >> people were told to stay indoors while the big cat was tracked -- was tracked down and no one was hurt. the mountain lion was tagged and fitted with a gps collar before being returned to the wild. a dog lost two years ago in oregon has been found alive and well in the state of utah. the dog's name is sara. and her owner says the border collie ran away from a friend's home in salem orie -- salem, oregon back in 2010. she spent months trying to find her pet but gave up hope. so she was shocked to get a call from a vet in utah. >> she wanted to scan for a
