neil armstrong. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00. >> good evening, i'm heather holmes. >> i'm john sasaki in for ken wayne. the petaluma was in the world series, but in the end the kids didn't have quite enough pop their bats. it's a story we have been following all month and ktvu's cara liu is live from opinions. that was one of the craziest, most exciting games played on any level. that is what so many were saying as they watched the game played on this field. the coaches and families tell me that they could not be prouder of how their hometown boys represented the bay area and the west in the little league world series. >> reporter: family, friends and fans on their feet after petaluma national rallied at the bottom of the final inning in regulation. they scored a whomping 10 runs

to erase a huge deficit. the game went no an extra inning with tennessee ultimately taking the game 24- 16. there was heartbreak and tears mixed with overwhelming happiness and pride. >> that is harsh. for them to get dropped like that, like your head, basically dropped from the sky like that is harsh. >> we have had a lot of dramatic come-from-behind wins, and this one was probably the best one that we had. down 10 runs to come back and tie it and i was fine with that. >> it's insane. i mean i'm sad, but we made it here. we played on that stadium. when i am 40 years old i can look on tv and say i played on that stadium. i did. it i hit a home run on that stadium and that is just cool to say. >> reporter: so many people have commented how well these 12 and 13-year- old boys have held themselves on this national stage. they still have a third place

11 mission was neil armstrong's last in space. >> they walked into the mobile quarantine facility. >> reporter: armstrong and his fellow astronauts spent three days quarantined in a camper like this one. we talked to people at the hornet's museum in alameda, who remember that moon mission like it was yesterday. james bush was 14 years old. >> i was sitting in the living room with my parents looking at the black-and-white tv at the black-and-white images saying i couldn't believe it was coming from the moon. >> reporter: was there any part of you that wanted to see that? >> no. it looked particularly scary. but it was just so amazing watching. >> it's a foundation of where we are today in space. >> reporter: though that walk on the moon put him on the history books neil armstrong never wanted history to define him. >> we all like to be recognized not for one piece of fireworks, but for the ledger of our daily work. >> reporter:

in alameda, noelle walker ktvu channel 2 news. and after that moon landing, neil armstrong never again traveled into space. he continued to work for nasa and turned down many suggestions that he should run for office. armstrong later taught aerospace engineering at the university of cincinnati. in a statement today his family says, "the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of neil armstrong and give him a wink." >> president obama hailed the late astronaut as one of the greatest american heroes of all- time, "when neil stepped on the surface of the moon for the first time he delivered a moment of human achievement that will never be forgotten." we are learning new information tonight about that deadly shooting yesterday in front of empire state building i'm ballistic report released today shows that all nine people wounded were hit by bullets fired by two police

officers. new york police say the suspect, jeffrey johnson turned around in a crowd and aim the gun at officers. that is when two parolmen opened fire. moments earlier johnson had gunned down a former co-worker on the sidewalk. in vallejo, we're told at least one person was hit by gunfire while sitting in a car. we have a crew on the way to vallejo and we'll bring you more information tonight on the 10:00 news. two children are in the hospital after being injured in separate shootings in oakland. police say a 12-year-old girl is recovering after a gunman opened fire on her home near bancroft avenue. no arrests have been made in that case. we're learning new detail details new details about the man who was killed as otis lee key.

that shooting happened last night on sycamore street. two men are recovering tonight after being shot in san francisco early this morning. it happened on mission near 9th street around 2:00 a.m. police say both men were taken to the hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. so far there is no suspect description. firefighters gaining ground against that huge wildfire in shasta county. the ponderosa fire full containment is expected monday. it has destroyed 64 homes and 20 otbuildings. more than 300 homes remain threatened. calfire says as of yesterday they have not seen the fire grow past any containment lines. to our continuing coverage of the chevron refinery fire in richmond, ann rubin tells us that a number of people seeking action against chevron is growing. >> reporter:

many who showed up had been to a doctor and filed a claim with chevron. now they were looking for answers about what happens next. they lined up to sign on. many richmond residents hoping to be part of a lawsuit against chevron. attorneys say though they started with just a handful of plaintiffs, about 3,000 have expressed interest now. >> i feel that i should be participating in it with everybody else, because we were all affected about this. >> reporter: the august 5 h-6th fire sent a plume of black smoke into the area and thousand to the hospital for treatment. >> well, it's not about money. it's about our health, our long- term health. >> reporter: many like reese came to listen. the event was billeds a chance for residents to know their rights of city officials and attorneys encourage residents to join forces. >> our best chance of building a healthy community depends on

what we're doing today. >> you allow people to be injured when you took profits over safety. you must be held accountable. >> chevron officials say safety is their no. 1 priority and once they determine the cause of the fire they will work hard to make sure it doesn't happen again. as fort lawsuit they say they haven't been served yet. still environmental groups are hoping that this will be the beginning of big changes there. >> it's about them really being honest and being fair and then being more into helping the people in community that really need the help. >> reporter: today was the last day chevron's claim center was open. they will continue to take claims on their 24-hour hotline. chevron officials say if you do file a claim with them, that will not prevent you from taking any future legal action. live in richmond, ann rubin, ktvu channel 2 news. the death toll is rising in venezuela, where at least 26 people were killed and 80 hurt

in a massive explosion and fire this morning at that country's biggest oil refinery. as you can see, balls of fire and huge plumes of black smoke. we learned that 17 of the people killed were national guard troops at a nearby base and one was a 10-year-old boy. the cause is not known and venezuela is a major oil supplier to the u.s.. a building at california was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived around 5:30 this morning. the building was once home to le virage french restaurant. no word on what caused that fire. and in hayward, firefighters say a working smoke alarm helped a family escape their burning home this morning. crews say the family was inside the home when the garage caught fire this morning. flames then spread to the attic. everyone got out, as did the family dog. investigators are trying to

the california highway patrol says a 23-year-old woman was killed after the mazdas she was riding in was struck by the driver. the impact drove the mazda off the road and into a light pole at about 10:45 p.m. the mazda driver suffered major injuries. south bay residents say that they are making a stand against violence. they held a peace march after a week of deadly shootings there in san josi. ktvu's allie rasmus talked to the demonstrators about their mission. >> reporter: the morning began with sunrise ceremony to remember the victims of san josi's recent violence. >> it's out of hand. we needed to come together, you know? culturally, you know, spiritual will you, we needed to come together. >> reporter: the group organized a day of action for peace. there have been 33 homicides in san josi this year, fueled in part by what police say is a gang war on city streets. it's time for us to stand up as

one person, one people, so we can take our streets back, our parks back. >> save our streets! save our children! >> reporter: after the prayer circle the group set out for a 6-mile march to roosevelt park. they want to organize more cultural events so that neighbors can come together and work tot a community-wide solution to the violence. >> that is what we need to do is get these young kids out of these gangs and teach them their culture and where they came fromment san josi police are stepping up their efforts and dedicating a special unit of officers to gang crimes. san josi residentmiav arechiga says police have om part of the solution. >> people are becoming aware and it's just important to do something and unite. >> they say their antiviolence march is the first of many events that they plan to have

to engage the community. in san josi, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. one of the nine jurors who ruled in favor of apple has spoken out. the jury believed that samsung had wronged apple. he also said he thought internal e-mails between executives about incorporating apple features on their own devices were damaging. in election 2012 news a schedule challenge for the upcoming republican national convention. it will start as scheduled on monday in tampa, florida, but will immediately recess until tuesday afternoon due to tropical storm isaac. mitt romney was in ohio and told voters to analyze president obama's actions from the past four years as they decide on the future of the country. >> it's not his words that people have to listen to, it is his action and his record and if they look at that, they will take him out of office and put people in the office to get

america going again. >> during the republican national convention romney expected to officially accept his party's nomination for president. today president obama talked about the upcoming national conventions and he says his opponent has locked himself in extreme positions on economic and social issues, which he says may affect undecided voters come november. >> what we have also seen is governor romney has not been willing to, i think, you know, own up to some of the responsibilities that are required if you are president of the united states. >> what have you learned? >> the democratic convention is still a week away and will take place in charlotte, north carolina coming up september 4th and our live convention coverage begins tomorrow like here on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 with ken pritchett live in tampa. he will be covering the impact of tropical storm isaac and i will also be there through thursday. isaac made landslide in haiti and cuba and is heading

towards the florida keys. one person was killed when isaac pounded the area with heavy winds and rain. >> everyone in the florida keys must be watching this storm very closely. conditions and timing of the storm remain influx. make sure to complete your preparation now. >> the national weather service says after the keys the storm is likely to hit the florida mainland on monday. >> obviously a lot of people watching what happens with tropical storm isaac. for more on that we go to our meteorologist mark tamayo and you are also keeping an eye on isaac. >> that is right, heather and john, we have the fog in the bay area, but forecasters are getting ready for that tropical storm which will eventually become a hurricane. the latest on isaac, winds 60 miles per hour moving to the northwest. here is the forecast track. put a pause in here tomorrow you see winds still at 70 miles per hour. just shy of hurricane status.

approaching the florida keys and there you can pick out the event track strengthening and that is the key and possibly category 2 hurricane sometime monday into tuesday, approaching right around panama city. back in the bay area, fog hugging the coastline from bodega bay and out towards berkeley and emeryville. as far as temperatures they ranged from the upper 50s in pacifica and san francisco, it's been cool out there. concord 70 degrees and antioch one of the warmer spots, 86. forecast headlines for tonight, fog will continue to develop. tomorrow will be the coolest day. that means a warming trend here in the long-range forecast. overnight lows cold this morning. get ready for another cold sunday morning. santa rosa at 49 degrees and livermore, 54.

. volunteers gathered at oakland's south prescott park to spruce up and restore the area. the oakland parks coalition says it picked the park because of its location at 3rd and henry streets, an area that the coalition says is enjoying a renaissance and needs an attractive oasis. i haven't seen that sort of reaction in the newsroom, everyone was on the end of our seats watching the petaluma little leaguers. >> every game has been like that. it's incredible. the petaluma little leaguers playing in the u.s. championship game and facing the team that beat them sunday, tennessee. and one of the greatest, craziest come backs in world series history was not enough. goodlettsville, tennessee beat them first, but this is lorenzo
