last couple of days. it's bottomed out yesterday. it will be a little warmer inland today. although there are signs for the upcoming weekend. today if you're away from the coast i think upper 70s and lee 80s. here is sal. >> golden gate bridge traffic looks good as you head down to the toll plaza. the fog is not a major issue. and the morning commute looks pretty good on highway 4. heard of a crash east 80 nearby ash by we are looking for it. we'll let you know what is coming up. happening now tropical storm isaac is gathering strength as it makes its way toward the gulf coast. >> we have issued a state declaration of emergency for the storm. as the national weather service folks tell us it will be a category 2 hurricane by the time it makes landfall. >> a state of emergency has also been declared in alabama and mississippi. people there are already preparing for the storm to hit late tomorrow or early wednesday. isaac is expected to be at hurricane strength by the time

it makes landfall. now that is as isaac hit parts of florida over the weekend. that's what it looked like with strong winds and heavy rains. however the wet weather was not enough to keep people inside. take a look at that. many said the storm was not as bad as expected. some minor damage and flooding. tropical storm isaac did cause them to postpone the start of the republican national convention. coming up at 6:15 we'll bring you a live report from tampa with how the republicans are scrambling to rearrange their convention schedules. and the trillion storm isaac is bringing bay area red cross volunteers down to florida. over the weekend 15 volunteers flew to miami, tampa, and orlando. they will be there running shelters, they will be assessing damages enalso offering counseling to those who may need it.

a prayer vigil is being held in san jose to remember the 33 people killed so far this year. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge joins us now to talk about who will be taking part in tonight's event. alex. >> reporter: good morning. families that have lost loved ones to violence will be on hand here. so will san jose police chief chris moore. everyone taking part in a prayer vigil outside san jose city hall. it will happen tonight. people will be gathering to bring attention to a recent rise in murders in this city. 33 homicides so far this year in san jose. and the recent spike in killings over the past couple of weeks has been fueled in part by what police are calling a bang gar if he is on pace for a record setting homicide. now the community is stepping up. >> save our streets. save our children. >> reporter: over the weekend

the community group black berets held a six mile long march for peace. they say neighbors have to work toward a solution to reduce the violence. the group says thatly planning future antiviolence events. in the meantime san jose police are doing nor research to deal with the violence. they are allocating $800,000 to pay for a special unit to look into the violence. it will all happen in front of city hall 7:00 p.m. tonight. live this morning in san jose alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. if you see a helicopter hovering low over the bay area today, there is no reason for harm. allie rasmus is here to explain why a chopper will be up just 300 feet over the ground. >> reporter: we are live in the oakland hill where is a lot of

the people in this neighborhood may notice those low flying helicopters. they will be flying low because they are part of a research project. as you mentioned in some cases they will be 300 feet above the ground. to put that in perspective the suspension tower is 525 feet high. the choppers will be going about the mid way point of that new tower. they are studding natural occurring radiation levels in the bay area. they will be flying helicopters with testing equipment over parts of the bay area all week. they will be flying over oakland, san francisco, and pacifica covering 69 square miles. the research flights will continue every day through sunday. the data they gatherer if shared with local and state authority authorities. they will have a baseline level of naturally occurring

radiation to compare it to. i contacted the natural security administration to ask them a little bit more about this project. we are waiting to hear back from them. live in oakland allie rasmus. a tsunami warning has been canceled but that is following a magnitude 7.3 earthquake off the coast of el salvador. there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the quakes. more earthquakes rattled southern california overnight a day after a series of 30 earthquakes shook that area. the largest of yesterday's quakes was magnitude 5.5 centered about three miles northwest of brawley. that is east of san diego county. not far from the mexico border. the quakes pushed 20 mobile homes off their foundation and knocked out power to 2500 customers. earthquake saleswomans are not

the victim was rushed to the hospital. that is where he later died. right now there is no word of any arrests or a possible motive. the golden state warriors released more information on their planned sports and entertainment complex in san francisco. team officials say they are in the final stages of negotiating an agreement with an architecture firm. details will be presented to san francisco board of supervisors next month. back in may the warriors announced their plans to move from oakland to san francisco. the team's lease at oracle arena ends in 2014. city officials will announce oakland hoves its sports team week. they want to salute the a's and raider for adding to the economy and pride. the week will start with the raiders monday night football season opener two weeks from today. and then end with the a's. sal has breaking news. what just happened?

>> we are looking at a grass fire in oakland right now. where we just heard of a grass fire on highway 13 near park. they have scrambled a bunch of fire enjoins on the way. we'll put that on a. westbound 80 we found it here between and. someone does need some attention. but the traffic is not doing all that well because of the rubber neck ever valley. even though the lanes are open, you can see the traffic is backing up as steve pulls back for us here. you can see traffic and very nice job, steve. traffic is moving along pretty well. westbound bay bridge at the toll plaza, pretty well past the accidents. let's start over with the bay bridge. it's not all that bad. the traffic here is moving along okay. especially in the fast track lanes. they are just about to turn the metering lights on. i want to mention we talk thed

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. san francisco emergency management teams are trying to figure out what sparked a false alarm of their warning systems. sirens went off at 3:45 yesterday causing some people to think there was an actual emergency. that is because the test is normally done at noon on tuesday. the wild fire burning near redding could be contained sometime today. it has burned nearly 28,000 acres and only 80% contained. 64 homes have been destroyed since lightning sparked that fire. all evacuation orders have been lifted in that area. time now 6:25. just a couple hours from right now the petaluma national little league team will be back here in the bay area. star boys will get a heros welcome after coming in third to the little league world series. >> up the middle. >> they beat panama 12-4 yesterday. they were in the third place

happening now people along the gulf coast are preparing for tropical storm isaac as it makes its way across the gulf of mexico. more than 50,000 people in southeast louisiana have been told to evacuate before that storm hit. isaac is expected to -- wednesday is the seventh anniversary of hurricane katrina. a state of emergency has been declared in louisiana, mississippi, and alabama. after being battered by strong rain and wind, people in florida are happy to see isaac move on. the storm hit the florida keys and the west coast of the state yesterday. there are reports that three people were killed in two crashes because of wet roads, and flooding and power outages. isaac has delayed the beginning of the republican national convention in tampa florida from today to tomorrow. the 700 member california delegation says the weather is not dampening their spirits.

en -- time now 6:33. overnight news this driver facing dui charges after hitting a fire hydrant in oakland sending that geyser of water into the air. this happened about 12:30 this morning. nor investigators say the driver left the scene then hit the embankment at 85th and railroad. the fire hydrant itself was lodged underneath that car. richmond city leaders and health officials plan to give an update on the chevron refinery fire today. a meeting is scheduled for 10:00 this morning. victims of the richmond refinery fire earlier this month will now have to file their claims by phone. that is because chevron closed the last health center over the weekend. class action lawsuit is forming against the oil company more than 18,000 claim have already

been filed. chevron has not commented on the potential lawsuit. victims of violence are being remembered tonight in san jose. ktvu channel 2 reporter alex savidge is have with more on the vigil that is planned for tonight. alex. >> reporter: good morning. families that have been torn apart by violence in this city will be taking part in a prayer vigil. they will have it right here outside of san jose city hall tonight. this is an event organized by a local church. star of david ministries and chris moor will also be on hand for the event as well. his department is dealing with the recent rise in murders. 33 homicides so far this year in san jose. and a repeat spike in killings police say is fueled in part by a gang war that is going on. san jose is now on pace for a record setting number of homicides. there were 39 murders during all of 2011. now the community is responding. >> save our streets. save our children. >> reporter: over the weekend

degrees. all eyes at least in the gulf tropical storm isaac it will strengthen. it's taking exactly almost an identical path that hurricane katrina took. it is expected to strengthen. there is a little bit of an eye forming. it's getting more organized. but it will as it moves into warmer gulf waters. question is where is it going to end up? probably somewhere between pensacola and new orleans. right now heading more toward new orleans. our forecast mode models go all over the place. back home there is a sea breeze there. upper 40s for some and down toward santa cruz you find something. 50s and 60s between. low up here really means we can't warm up too much as long as it stays there. but it looks like high pressure kicks in for a day here or two. we'll see a little built of a jump up for inland temps. not so much coast and bay. warmer inland. low clouds, sunny. and temperatures now away from the coast will get back in the

debt clock. also today mitt romney will be meeting with the head of his white house transition team. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. the democratic national convention is next week in charlotte, north carolina. this week president obama will be campaigning in three states. iowa, colorado, and virginia meeting with college students. our time is 6:45. two americans soldiers have been killed this morning in afghanistan. the number of insider attacks keeps rising. this happened in the eastern part of afghanistan. afghan soldier is accused of shooting and killing both americans. american troops fired back and killed him. yesterday 17 afghan civilians were also killed in southern afghanistan. they were beheaded. this happened at a music event. insider attacks as we have been talking about are a growing problem. this month alone. 12 american troops have been

killedden if there have been 33 so-called insider attacks with 42 deaths so far this year. last year there were 35 deaths. and in 2010 there were 20. the marine county man known as the american taliban is due in court today to claim the government is violating his religious rights in prison. john walker lindh wants to be allowed to pray together with his fellow muslim inmates once a day. the federal prison where he is serving a 20 year sentence only allows them to pray together once a week. he was captured in 2001 in afghanistan while fighting with the talibans. >> the final report of that deadly plane crash that killed 11 people at last years reno air race is due to be released at any moment now. federal investigators focused part of their 11 month h investigation on on the highly modified race planes tail configurations. fans say they 1:a small piece

the national nuclear security administration will fly the choppers with testing equipment over oakland, san francisco, and pacifica. the helicopters will be flying low as you mentioned just 300 feet above the ground and to put that in perspective the new suspension tower of the bay bridge that is 525 feet high. you can imagine 300 feet is pretty low to the ground. the agencies have contacted local police departments to get the word out so that residents aren't alarmed when they see the low flying choppers. they will be flying every day this week through sunday covering 69 square miles of the bay area. in the event of a nuclear disaster or radiation release in the bay area, there will be a baseline level of that naturally occurring radiation to compare it to. now this morning we have reached out to contact the nuclear security administration in washington, d.c. to ask them more about this project. we haven't heard back from them. an hour from now at the airport there will be a meeting

closure. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge. see a little bit of a backup here. it's backed up to about the end of the parking lot. a little bit more than that. maybe to the 880 over crossing. now let's go to steve. overcast conditions greet us again. not as extensive as yesterday. there are signs that inland temps will warm up a little bit. still a rather strong low sitting up there and right off seattle and also portland means temperatures are really hard pressed to warm up too much. along the coast and bay. there is too much in the way of low clouds and fog. we will go 79 today. the city a couple degrees warmer. now liver mere yesterday 72. going 81. i'm having -- i'm going with the forecast models. i looked at all three and four of them this morning. they were on this. san jose from 71-79. so we'll see. but it looks warmer inland

today. tropical storm isaac starting to get more organized and showing an eye again as it moves away from florida. that is a lot of rain. now the path is heading unfortunately right back toward new orleans or somewhere mt. gulf. it will start to strengthen a little bit. 65 miles an hour moving northwest at 15. heading toward the mouth of the mississippi river. we'll see what happens over the next 24 hours. and consensus they start to waiver after about 24 hours on the path. right now it's heading toward new orleans. we'll see. west, southwest 13. that is not much at traction. 40s napa and santa rosa. down toward watson vail and santa cruz. 50s and 60s between. pretty good looking little low sitting right there. but with the decrease in the sea breeze temperatures will come up a little bit. so low clouds. there is plenty there. it will be warmer inland. breezy by the coast. expect for the santa cruz coastline. which is mostly fog free.
