third in the little league world series. alex savidge joinsus from sfo where the team landed -- join us from sfo where the team landed just over an hour ago. >> reporter: the boys are back home from what was a magical run that took them all the way to pennsylvania. these young players have been on the road playing baseball for 27 straight days. they just landed an hour ago at sfo and they got an unbelievable homecoming. >> petaluma! petaluma! [ cheers ] >> reporter: this was the scene inside terminal 1 at sfo as friends and family chanted and waved signs. the petaluma national all-stars stepped off the plane as heroes. they played third in the world in the little league world series. they came up just short in the u.s. championship game on saturday in pennsylvania, losing to tennessee, but they won their consolation game on sunday and the boys are

certainly proud of the way they fought. >> we just wanted to end our season with a win. that's what we did. third in the world, second in the u.s. nothing better than that. you can't ask for anything better. >> this is cool. this is pretty awesome. i mean, we were signing autographs and everything. but here coming in -- off the airplane to petaluma! that's pretty cool. >> reporter: after the tea grabbed their bags from baggage claim, they went inside and hopped inside to a stretch hummer limousine, waiting for them to take them back up to petaluma. it was all organized by the coach. coaches and some friends and family. the limo waiting right outside the terminal. the boys hopping in. they are on their way back to up to petaluma, there will be a welcome home party por them. a number of -- for them. a number of people expected to gather for that. i asked one of the young players, i said, what are you doing tomorrow?

he said, i'm going back to school. live at sfo, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. the city of petaluma plans a big parade and celebration for the little leaguers this coming sunday at 1:00 p.m. it will start at walnut park and make its way back. that's at 4th and b streets. the celebration at the park will include the present tase of a city proclamation and inproduction of the -- presentation of a city proclamation and introduction of the players. the vatican announced the appoint-the kordil -- appointed kordilia last month. his appointment drew criticism from local gay leaders because he's an outspokennen opponent of same-sex marriage.

an officer-involved shooting this morning prompted an elementary school to be on lockdown. tara moriarty joins us from noe valley to tell us what prompted the shooting and what is happening now. >> reporter: well, this certainly had a ripple effect and spanned several sections of san francisco. police believe this happened with a man holding a woman up at gunpoint and stealing her cell phone. officers traced the cell phone here where they found several cell phones inside of a car. over the past hour, police have been pulling 2 of the suspects out of the squad cars and then they drove up witnesses so that they could try to identify the suspect. now, all of this started at 6:30 this morning. first the robbery, then the suspects scattered. 2 were found in noe valley off 28th and church. neighbors say a female officer chased them, yelled at one of them to stop and then she

fired. >> one of the suspects while jumping up a wall, turned quickly to the officer, she fired one round. it did not strike the suspect. >> reporter: now, one suspect was detained. the other got away. 20 minutes later, police got a ping off a stolen phone from a car off 8th avenue. >> these electronic devices stolen, the fact that more than one cell phone was found in the vehicle that would indicate that these folks were -- that was their business, stealing cell phones. >> reporter: now you, the car was traced to a senior -- now, the car was traced to a senior living facility where police arrested more suspects. they had paper bags on their hands because police were trying to test them for gunfire. now, this is still too early to tell if this was part of a larger ring. the female officer was injured.

she twisted her ankle. she's expected to be okay. as far as the suspects, they face a variety of charges, the most serious of which would be armed robbery. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, tara. the san francisco police bomb squad was out this morning, investigating a suspicious package. it was discovered in a garage can, a garbage can, rather, around 5:00 a.m. on firerman's wharf on beach street, not far from pier 39. all of the activity caused closures. 0 rooms and a nearby hotel were evacuated. the -- 30 rooms and a nearby hotel were evacuated. the police were allowed back in around 7:45. pg&e patched a broken gas line in the richmond district. a contract digging on 26th between klemm men and gary street ruptured the two-inch line just after 8:00 this morning. some foreclosure apartment buildings were evacuated until

big week for mitt romney, severe weather has taken some focus away from the republican national convention. >> the hazard are many for the northern gulf coast hurricane warning area but we need to prepare for a category 1, possibly 2, hurricane. >> reporter: that presentation has caused a shift in the convention. the four-day convention, now down to three days. >> as long as this storm threatens the public safety here in louisiana, i'm not going anywhere. >> it's important for mississippians to take this storm seriously and prepare now for its potential impact. >> reporter: back in tampa, there's hope the show will soon go on and republicans say they believe before long their message will be heard loud and clear. >> we're voting on what kind of country we want to be and what the government should be. we have 2 very different views on that. the americans will get to decide and that will start to

become clearer this week. >> reporter: mitt romney spoke to reporters saying despite the delays he's looking toward to a great convention. he -- forward to a great convention. he answered questions about his speech which he says he's feeling very good about. he's also very aware of the folks on the gulf and hopes they avoid any kind of destruction on the storm. jennifer david, ktvu channel 2 news. back to you. >> thank you. richmond residents are at a meeting right now for the chevron refinery fire. officials are updating residents on where the investigation stands now and the next steps to be taken. chevron says people will now have to file claims by phone. they closed the last help center over the weekend. the class action lawsuit is forming against the oil company. more than 18,000 claims have already been filed. the national transportation safety board is presenting its

finds today in on that -- findings today on that airshow. the ntsb finds that the vintage plane was pushed beyond its physical limits and experienced a structural failure. the board also found that loose crews and a crit -- a critical tail assembly contributed to the crash that killed the pilot and ten people on board. fire crews are gaining ground on the pen doe -- ponderosa fire. the fire now covers 27,600 acres. as of this morning, firefighters had to 85% contained. 52 homes and 90 out buildings have been destroyed since lightning sparked the fire nine days ago. all evacuation orders and road closureses have been lifted in the area. the faa is investigating saturday night's fiery crash of a light plane shortly after take-off from south lake tahoe

a driver faces dui charges after causing this mess in oakland. it happened around 12:30 this

morning at 90th avenue and san leandro street. investigators say the driver hit a fire hydrant, left the scene, then hit an embankment, 85th and railroad and the hydrant was found lodged underneath the car. hundreds of small to moderate earthquakes are still shaking the southern california desert east of san diego. the largest was a magnitude 5.5. it hit yet and was centered about 3 miles northwest of brawley. the quakes knocked 20 mobile homes off their foundations and caused a power outage for 2500 customers. no one was injured. earthquake swarms are not nearby in the brawley area. scientists say the quakes could continue for several more days. an investigation is underway this noontime after an alarming report about security at san francisco airport. the san francisco examiner says screeners recently cleared dozens of bags classified as high-risk threats at peak

so again, the warming trend already underway. pacific satellite view, this trough here remains off the west coast but is being pushed north just a little bit by that ridge of high pressure to the east of us. so that's going to continue to bring us warmer numbers into the first half of the week before the low finally starts to push back later in the week. so for today, along the coast, one to three degrees warmer than yesterday, around the bay, 3 to 5 degrees warmer inland, 7 to 10 degrees above what we felt yesterday afternoon dealing with just a little bit of patchy fog right along the coastline. mostly sunny skies over the golden gate park at this hour, again, half moon bay as well as santa cruz enjoying blue skies and mostly sunny elsewhere as well. here is a look at your afternoon highs for today. 82 degrees in santa rosa. 78 for sonoma, 80 in napa. low 70s is what we received yesterday afternoon in areas right around santa rosa as well as napa. 5 to 10 degrees for your afternoon today. along the east bay, 74 for oakland, 73 san leandro.
