moment. first to our chief meteorologist bill martin who is tracking the hurricane's path. >> it is now a tropical storm, that is good news but it is dumping rain. you see the heavy rain bands over new orleans. some areas seen this much rain, closer here, one of these stations, 17 inches of rain. that is in 24 hours. this weather system is powerful. look at the forecast. it is a tropical storm. watch what happens, it stays there. look that rain band over new orleans. this is about rain. the winds are dying down but we are talking another foot of rain. you see the rain moves out of the area but rain intos thursday and friday. so -- rain continues into thursday and friday. so we are looking that system, i will be tracking it and we will keep you posted. right now to new orleans with the latest on rescue efforts.

because it has been a lot of rain and quite a bit of rain. >> reporter: isaac may have been down graded to a tropical storm but it is just as relentless as ever, the rain will not stop and the threat of flooding still looms. isaac swept through the gulf coast wednesday, dozens of people who didn't follow evacuation orders have been rescued from flooded homes. >> we were going to try to leave and we didn't because we had no wear to go. >> reporter: hundreds of thousands are without power and isaac keeps churning. disaster striking twice for those who went through hurricane katrina. >> i didn't think it would happen again. >> we left with hurricane katrina but that is it. had enough. >> reporter: as the storm moves inland it could bring over a

foot of rain to the region. >> this storm is a slow moving storm. it will be moving through our state, we will be dealing with the storm through friday morning. the flooding isn't over yet. new orleans' mayor warned residents to stay prepared. >> in the city of new orleans i would like to say now is not the time to let your guard down. stay hunkered down, stay inside and stay on task. >> i have more damage for this storm than hurricane katrina. >> reporter: it will continue to weaken as it moves over land the next 48 hours. >> reporter: new orleans tonight is under a dusk to dawn curfew. the storm will have been over louisiana for 50 hours, 50 hours if it leaves by friday morning. reporting live from new orleans, back to you. >> the bay area rescue task

force is ready to help in louisiana if called on. >> ann rubin is live where she spoke with rescuers about the lessons learned during hurricane katrina that could save lives now. >> reporter: california's task force trained here, practicing rescues. they are skills they put to the test during hurricane katrina. >> reporter: they call it new orleans deja vu. images of isaac bringing back memories of hurricane katrina striking 7 years ago today. >> it is not as significant as hurricane katrina but they are getting hit again. >> reporter: they were there supplying rescue specialists during the worst of hurricane katrina. we caught up with them the day they saved 501 people from their flooded homes. >> we felt a sense of

accomplishment. >> we thought we were doing -- we did do a great job. when we got home we never understood that people saw it as a failure. >> reporter: there were problem that raised questions for the crews. >> were we doing any good because we are pulling them out of a flood zone but there is no support for them. >> reporter: a lot has changed in the last 7 years. much of the support is already in place for victims of isaac. and while it seems unlikely they will get the call they be 60,000 pounds of equipment ready to roll and bags are packed. starting september 1 they are on top of the on-call list. >> if our country calls we will go. that is what we are here for. >> reporter: they will ease up on the training here because they need to be ready to

new information about people being notified about the deadly disease. >> reporter: that number was 1700, we learned the number is now 2900 people have been called, e-mailed or received letters like this notifying them they may have been exposed to hantavirus. patients who express symptoms could symptoms hantavirus could end up in the hospital. >> reporter: the national park service is contacting 1700 park visitors to let them know they have been exposed to hantavirus. he is a specialist he says the disease inkue baits for 5

weeks. >> shortness of breath and a cough, we have to put the patient on ventilation, on machines to support breathing. >> reporter: early detection and treatment are the keys to saving lives. >> hantavirus has a mortality rate of 38%. >> reporter: there is no vaccine and no cure. it has to run its course. hantavirus was diagnosed in the early 1990s. >> it is very important for doctors to be aware that in patients that have the history, they have to consider hantavirus as a possibility. >> reporter: again, this afternoon, 2900 people received notification about the responsible exposure to hantavirus. cdc are issuing a nationwide

alert to medical officials, and again, one more note, there is no worries about a wider outbreak, hantavirus can't be spread from person to person. live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. a campaign is under way to get supervisors to change their minds about a water front development project. ktvu's mike mibach is live in the city with the information that opponents are hoping that will sway city leaders. >> reporter: supervisors have to go on record tuesday and if they don't reverse their first vote this view could change for those folks walking along this part of the embarcadero. >> reporter: a rally on the steps outside of city hall. also known as 8 washington. a condo slated to be built on

prime water front property north of washington. >> eye sore. >> reporter: they collected 31,000 signatures to qualify a referendum for the 2013 city ballot changing the -- challenging the height. >> voters are with us. the board of supervisors voted in favor of increasing the height to 136 feet but now the board is scheduled to vote again on tuesday. he is trying to lobby three supervisors, all three voted yes and now he wants them to vote no because the polls show they are against the height limit. >> we came out today to give them a chance to do what the

p.m. news and a programming note, ktvu channel 2 news will air mitt romney's speech tomorrow night, he is expected to speak at 10:00 p.m. so the raiders game will be aired on tv 36. demolition will begin next week on the bart station. starting next week crews expected to start tearing down building to make way for the new line. a school struggles to recover after this bursts, floods the neighborhoodb and cause as sink hole -- neighborhood and causes a sink hole. >> the work that is catching a lot of attention.

flames destroyed a south bay nursery over night. the fire broke out before midnight that summer winds nursery on almaden expressway and branham road. firefighters had to led the fertilizers and pesticides inside to burn off to keep toxins from getting into the river. the building was a total loss, the owner plans to reopen as soon as possible. we got a look at the flooding caused by a water main break and sink hole in san francisco. ktvu's david stevenson tells us how students handled that emergency. >> reporter: let's look at a couple things. this is the pipe, part of it that ruptured tuesday morning and caused the flood.

this is the by pass that was built to allow cars to get out of the area and here is the sink hole. >> reporter: administrators counted their blessings. >> the school will be back in session day after labor day. in good shape. all new carpet. the children will be ready to learn. >> reporter: two classrooms and offices were damaged when a coupling on a pipeline ruptured. cell phone video captured the flooding. he said the water came without warning warning and rose fast. >> in the middle of class, and the water was 2 feet high and

then the -- started flooding. >> the kids handled it really well. they got them up and got parents to pick them up. >> reporter: they work to reopen the campus next tuesday. >> heart breaking. >> reporter: the volleyball team is now without a place to practice. >> we got a call from another school that said they welcome our teams to practice with them. >> reporter: and as of tonight there is no damage estimates from the public utilities commission as they continue to investigate what caused the rupture. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. ktvu obtained records from the chevron refinery in richmond. the cal-osha records list 19 inspections since 2005.
