jose. happening now a church is on fire right now. lorraine blanco just got there to let us know what's going on. lorraine this. >> reporter: a firefighter collapsed here on the site. he's being taken care of right now. we were about to covary political rally at city hall. we saw black smoke billowing out of the church. block smoke was rushing out of the top of st. patrick's can she drawl church on santa clara street in san jose. the parishioners were -- cathedral church on san jose street in stay. here's what one -- in san jose. here's what one of the parishioners saw -- >> we seen 2 guys. all of the glass was popping. >> parishioners from the church told mow all of the people inside who were praying at the

some good news this noontime on san francisco's schools. the city's truancy rate is down. new at noon, ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live to explain why a partnership between the schoolsant district attorney's office gets the credit. tara? >> reporter: well, more than 90% of the young murder victims were high school dropouts and

that's an alarming statistic that forced the district attorney to take a hard look at this. for the second year in a row, officials implemented a tram -- program to keep freshmen on campus. >> without intervention, today's truants are tomorrow's dropouts. i should know i was a chronic truant myself. >> reporter: now, for the fifth year in a row, san francisco has reduced the number of habitually and and chronic children enrolled in the school from nearly 5500 to 2007 to about 400 this year. that's a 38% reduction rate. victor sosa is one of them. >> talking to me about -- you know, if i didn't come to

our extinguishment. >> the cause of the fire is under investigation but investigators say the fire is not considered suspicious. at this shower, police in san mateo are still searching for whoever robbed a mother and her 2 kids at gunpoint. it happened at broad daylight right across the street from an elementary school. here's more. >> reporter: this morning, police officers kept a watchful eye on kids headed to school on indian avenue in san mateo. this was on this street just before noon yesterday that a mother walking with her 1-year- old daughter and her 6-year-old son were robbed at gunpoint. >> a suspect approached them, ha brandished a firearm and demanded property from the mother. >> reporter: the mother gave the robber what he wanted and he took off running down the street, down the blocks and that's the last anyone saw him -- anyone saw of him.

police notified the park immediately and the school sent out 2 e-mails immediately. this morning, the staff was briefed. >> we're letting staff know of the incident so we can keep our parents and kids calm and let them know we're on it. >> we would advise the public to use extreme caution, especially if they were to commit such a crime during the day near a school. >> reporter: parents we spoke to said they are glad to see the extra police presence. >> i'm glad they are out here and i have faith they will keep an eye on the kids. >> reporter: the suspect is described as a white male, late teen, early 20s, 6 feet tall with a stocky build. anyone who saw anything is asked to call police. in san mateo, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. isaac is still causing

problems in some gulf coast states. elizabeth pramm is live in new orleans with more. >> reporter: you are right, hi, tori. well, the city of new orleans has done pretty well. it's the folks in parishes that aren't protected by the levee system. they are afraid when they do go home their homes will be completely submerged. while isaac's strength is slowly weaken, the storm is gin rating a lot of -- generating a lot of hazard. some people have reefed -- air some areas have received as much as 20 inches of rain. bobby jindal -- >> one of the administrators pointed out an employee to me named curtis, ten-year employee working at different homes. he lost his home during hurricane katrina and stayed on to help. he lost his home again and he's

still here helping patients during isaac. >> reporter: rescue crews getting through the high- standing waters realizing they are working against time as waters continue to rise. >> i think we're gonna be here a while doing this. we were gonna check on our building but we're gonna go home instead. it's too dangerous. >> reporter: now, tori, experts estimate that damages could about up to $1.5 billion after this karster. -- dash after this disaster. back -- $1.5 billion after this disaster. back to you. a pilot from las vegas had to turn around after seeing a warning light. you can see from the board inside the airport, the flight was canceled and the passengers put on another plane. and a graphic from a flight- tracking website shows the

turnaround. southwest says the cancellation delayed the passengers for about three and a half hours. security screeners at san francisco international airport are complaining that government interference is creating a security concern when it comes to checked luggage. the bags go through a scan and then an alarm will go off telling them to do a more thorough check. however, the screeners say that button was disabled in 2004. >> it's like saying you don't use your clutch anymore. you have an automatic clutch. it's like saying that. it's an irrelevant argument. the main thing is the tsa, the d.o.t. investigator general, everyone

has investigated and they found no metro this claim. sunnyvale police are investigating a crash that sent a car no a house that morning. it happened at the corner of south bernard avenue and vicente drive in sunnyvale. police say the car went up over the turn, tore into a tree and knicked the corner of the house. there are no reports of any injuries. the fog is back with us coast side. it will have an impact on our temperatures for today, especially around the coast. the inland spot, pretty hot numbers out there. here's our live number. there's evidence of that marine layer kind of expanding m coverage over the last three years. as far as isaac you can see the rain beginning to break up. but there's still intense bands extending to the south and west and also around parts of

mississippi, excessive rainfall rates. the latest on isaac, still patrol moving to the north- northwest right around 9 miles an hour. over the next few hours, this weakens into a tropical depression. look at all of the rainfall heading to the north. some heavy rain shifting from the south to the north as we head into friday and the weekend. back here in the bay area, we have some pretty warm numbers inland. the low to mid-80s out there. san francisco, you 60 degrees. mountain view, 70 and san jose reporting 74. high pressure today begins to weaken. as a result we begin our cooling trend. temperatures around 90 degrees. but with the presence of that fog bank. some more changes as this area of low pressure drops in from the north. so with ha, warmest locations barely making it up in the

lower 80s for friday afternoon. over the weekend, we'll bump the numbers up. here is a look at your forecast highs. definitely grab the jacket and wetter -- grab the jacket and sweater. warmest locations inland. instead of the upper 90s we'll go for the lower 90s. today we'll go 92 in livermore. san jose a forecast high of 82 and san mateo around 74. here is a look ahead -- your five-day forecast with your weekend always in view. there is your holiday weekend. not too much of a change for saturday. but then we had a few high clouds for the mix. so the high -- so the high clouds could be associated with a tropical storm -- we'll have to keep an eye on this because there's a hint of showers. still a long ways out. i don't think it will happen

stocks are down today with investors too worried about high gas prices. taking a live look at the big board. the dow is down 84 -- 84. nasdaq is down 86. happening now, we want to go back to lorraine blanco. she's at the scene of a church fire in san jose. you have new information on the injured firefighter. >> reporter: yes, tori. it was a very intense situation when that firefighter just collapsed right here on 6th street. we just got an update from the captain. of course, she was very distraught, understandably, one of her comrades seriously injured. she said he was rushed to the hospital. she's at not sure of the extent of his injuries. before he was taken away by stretcher, he was unconscious.

the tree-alarm fire -- the three-afarm started -- three- alarm fire started here on 8th street. there were parishioners inside, maybe a dozen praying. they all got 0 -- got out safely. firefighters were able to get the foyer outp when they arrived, a lot of black smoke, windows were popping and then when the fire was uncold, just a tu minutes later, the firefighter collapse -- was under cover, just a few minutes laterrer, the fire collapsed. we know he was transported with develop serious injuries. if you take a look at the roads right here, on santa clara street, it's blocked from 7, to 9th. if you are in the area, you will want to avoid it and take a detour around and avoid santa clara between 7th and 9th. as soon as we get more information, we'll bring it to

pursuit with a black dodge magnum. the chp joined the pursuit as the car entered westbound highway 80. there's no word on what prompted the pursuit. and a richmond school opened today after it was targeted by vandals. students arrived for classes  this morning. several repairs are said to be made to the campus, including the gym and library after vandals caused about a million dollars in damage to the newly- constructed school last january. teachers are getting a second chance, thanks to a grant. the moneypays paychecks as well. the grants from the county last for two years and organizers say there are a lot of teenagers who need jobs. they say even at no cost to the employer, it can be a challenge to get them to participate. tonight on the news at
