i'll explain it for you coming up. traffic is doing well except there is a problem in san jose. we'll tell you about that in a minute. let's take a look at live pictures. traffic is moving along well as you are driving highway 4 coming up to the little pats grave. morning commute on 80 westbound traffic looks good. there is a problem on san jose at northbound 101. the commute minutes away. let's go back to pam. we begin with breaking news out of new jersey this morning. three people are dead after an early morning shooting inside a grocery store in new jersey. there is a live picture there. it is located in the east central part of the state of new jersey. this is the scene. reports indicate that a man walked in the store at 1:00

a.m. pacific time as employees were stocking the shelve. a shootout followed. three people, including the gun manny gunman were killed. we are getting more information in the news room. someone or some group is preying on women walking alone in oakland. police are investigating a series of robberies and sexual assaults. claudia long is in oakland this morning with the search for suspects and more victims. >> reporter: yes, police say they know several victims. they believe there are more out there who are afraid to come forward. they are trying to get more information. we know the attack happened all to women between the ages of 18 to 54 all walking alone. >> what is happening is that they are being approached to be robbed. if they don't have any money then they are sexually assaulted. >> reporter: one attack happened the early morning

hours. police aren't giving many details about where in the fruitville district. information on suspects is vague. they range in age from 25 to 40. the level of violence appears to be escalating. >> there were several individuals that were described in other cases similar descriptions of how these crimes are committed. because this one victim was severely injured, the family actually took her to the hospital so she can receive treatment. >> reporter: police say they believe the victims are coming forward because of language barriers orfears. all the victims are latino. the only reason they found a growing number of victims is because the 54-year-old victim was so badly hurt her family took her to the hospital. police are reaching out to the community telling them they want to help. that someone needs to come

forward to tell them about the crime. live in oakland claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. the power is back on in an oakland neighborhood this morning after a transformer explosion. it happened at 9:45 last night on 41st street near telegraph avenue. a witness told us she heard a loud noise. then she saw a power pole fall on her car. 300 customers were without power for a few hours. republican presidential nominee mitt romney and his running mate rain paul ryan are making a victory tour through florida, ohio and virginia today. >> mr. chairman and delegates, i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> last night romney promised to restore america. he said president obama has failed to deliver on his promise of hope and change four

is making headlines this morning. coming up at 4:45 highlights of he is ad lib speech mocking the president and the three-word response from president obama's campaign. today president obama is traveling to fort bliss, texas to meet with u.s. troops on the second anniversary of the end of the war in iraq. president will return to campaign mode beginning tomorrow with a tour of four key states over the holiday weekend. next week the democrats hold their national convention in charlotte, north carolina. the president will head there on tuesday. and is said to deliver he is prime time address next thursday night. our live coverage of the democratic national convention begins sunday night with the 10:00 news. ken is heading to charlotte to bring us live reports from the convention floor. san jose firefighter remains in critical condition this morning after he went into cardiac arrest after battling a fire inside a church. the fire started before 11:30 yesterday morning at st.

patrick's cathedral in san jose. investigators believe the fire started near the alter while several parishioners were inside. the church and nearby schools were evacuated. dozens of firefighters were just bringing the fire under control when 15 year veteran, frank ryan collapsed. fellow firefighters used a defribble or the before he was taken to the hospital. >> the investigation into the fire is on hold until an engineer determines the building is safe to go back in. prosecutors say he killed the

26-year-old nursing student because she believed lay was having an affair with the father of her child. a new report suggests san francisco failed to improve the city's most dangerous intersections. the report compiled from police data showing the same problem spots resurfaced each year. in 2011 ten pedestrian and bicyclist were injured at market. other dangerous intersections include oak, fifth and market and market and valencia. a reminder, all lanes will be shut down tonight and remain closed through the labor day. closure will allow crews to install joints on the eastern side of the span. lanes will shut down at 10:00 tonight. they will not open until 5:00 a.m. tuesday morning. here's a look at the two major alternate routes around the closure. you can either head north to the san jose bridge or make the trek south on highway 237. public transit always a good

idea. sal is a big advocate of that. happy friday. traffic is doing well around the bay area except for one spot. we'll tell you about that in a moment. first, let's take a look at the east shore freeway. we start there and the traffic usually is doing very nicely here. we are going to see what the east shore freeway looks like to burkeley. i have been looking at the thing. according to chp it is a nice looking drive. morning commute is moving westbound on the bay bridge. that's not all that bad. traffic continues to move along well. northbound 280 is moving nicely on the freeway. northbound 280 looking good. they have just reopened lanes on southbound 101 at tully road. there was an injury accident there. they have just opened lanes and canceled the alert. southbound and northbound 101

normal. hundreds of people have already been rescued from rising water as people try to recover from hurricane isaac. at least three deaths are blamed on the storm that hit tuesday as a hurricane. it has now weakened to a tropical depression. more rain is expected to come down in louisiana today. thousands of people are still without power. it is expected to be days before some people can return home. nearly 60,000 people had to be evacuated in mississippi near a dam. that dam is showing signs of weakening after heavy flooding from the storm. state workers are performing controlled releases to ease pressure on that dam. storm is now expected to make its way through arkansas later today. this morning two more visitors to yosemite national park come down with the hunta virus. many bay area families are wondering if they have been exposed. two people died. total of six people become sick. doctors are getting calls from patients worried they may have

contracted the virus in yosemite's village. >> it is the first thing on our mind when we wake up in the morning. >> health department has sent out warnings to visitors who stayed in cabins in curry village in june, july or august. symptoms can take up to six weeks to show. they include cough, fever, shortness of breath and nausea. oscar award winner clint eastwood added star power to last night's republican national convention. he discussed the difference between today and the night president obama was elected. >> everybody is crying. oprah was crying. i haven't cried that hard since i found out there is 23 million unemployed people in this country. >> 82-year-old san francisco-born actor and director received a standing ovation when he walked on the stage.

during his 11 minute speech he talked to an empty chair that represented the president. >> what do you want me to tell romney? i can not tell him to do that to himself. you are getting as bad as biden. >> president obama's campaign responded on twitter saying this seat's taken. pentagon is threatening to take legal action against the former navy seal who wrote a book about the death of osama bin laden. the pentagon claims the author violated the navy's non-disclosure agreement by releasing classified information. the book, titled "no easy day" is due to be released next week. people in almeida county will have something to smile about today thanks to a local dental office. welling dental care is offering free services to the first 100 people who live in almeida county. people get fillings and teeth cleaning . event is opened to all ages. it kicks off at 7:00 this

morning. it will end at 5:00 tonight. today, scientist could get a closer look at dolphins swimming in a south san francisco canal. scientist have been monitoring their movements since wednesday. they are still in the canal today. scientist plan to move into the water to make sure dolphins are okay. last night people gathered at the canal to get a rare glimpse of the mammals. >> it is amazing. i feel bad. i hope they are not endangered. >> this isn't the first time dolphins have been in the south san francisco waters. another dolphin was spotted in the canal in july. let's check in with sal for an early look at traffic. good morning. >> good morning. traffic is doing well. starting off this friday not a bad commute at all. as a matter of fact we are looking at 80 westbound coming out to the mccarther maze. so far so good heading to the maze and toll plaza. bay bridge toll plaza westbound is light. no major problems getting into

the city. >> onshore breeze blowing in the bay into the delta. marine layer fattened up to 2500 feet. we are looking at gray skies in concorde, livermore, parts of the north bay and south bay. it will burn off later today leaving mostly sunny skies. the deeper marine layer will prove a cooler day around the bay. this weekend we have a south flow building. i'm talking in areas where the beaches face the south. areas near santa cruz are you headed this way for the weekend? we have an advisory. waves four to 7 feet. rip currents definitely going to be a concern in that area. if you are headed that way for

welcome back to the morning news. more to breaking news out of new jersey. a police source now says at least three people are dead after a shootout inside the pack mark supermarket in old bridge, new jersey. 25-miles outside of new york. the gunman walked in the store at 1:00 a.m. pacific time and opened fire. there are rumors that the

gunman was wearing body armor and took hostage. he apparently killed several workers before killing himself. survivors say he was a former employee and an ex-marine. we'll have more on the story coming up in the 5:00 hour. investigators say dna evidence confirms the man killed by police during a standoff in san francisco in may fatally beat his own mother in the park. police found 41-year-old dennis hughes barricaded inside his exgirlfriend's apartment. he began lighting fires and shooting in wall when officers tried to arrest him. a police sniper eventually killed hughes. he killed his mother three days earlier. we have details emerging about the aurora theater shooting suspect. during court yesterday it was revealed james holmes may have tried to call a psychologist nine minutes before the

shooting. she fied she ended her relationship with holmes a month before the shooting. she tried to contact police because she was so concerned about what happened during their last meeting. 12 people died in that shooting. 58 others were hurt in the attack. harvard university is investigating allegations of a wide-spread cheating scandal. the investigation involves more than 100 students who took an undergraduate government class last spring. the students plagiarized or shares answers on a take-home exam. those found guilty could be suspended for a year or face other disciplinary actions. the football team will play in memorial stadium tomorrow after spending a year away from home. last year memorial stadium underwent a multimillion renovation. field has been lowered four feet. they are flex joints to make the stadium safer in an earthquake. season opener is tomorrow at

forecast coming up. good morning. checking in on isaac continuing its path bringing heavy rainfall and tornadoes from the mississippi valley into the weekend. isaac is going to bring three to six inches of rain to the midwest states that are suffering a 50-year record drought. that may be the best out of isaac. on the west coast we have a trough right off the coastline. that's bringing us the cool down. you probably felt the delta breeze kick in yesterday inland. we felt it around the bay. this morning we are waking up with wide-spread low clouds, mist and drizzle around the area. 58 oakland. 57 concorde. north bay warmer. 56 degrees santa rosa. visibility between five and 7- miles around the bay.
