japan, indonesia. a tsunami watch has just been issued for hawaii. one house has collapsed and power is knocked out to several philippine cities. this is according to radio reports. at this point, we have no other information about any injuries but we will continue to follow this story and bring you more information as we get it. in local news, the search is on for those responsible for a string of sexual assaults in oakland. they began as robberies and then became even more violent. claudine wong is live where police are urging victims to come forward and that's sometimes a challenge. claudine? >> reporter: it is, tori. there are two things happening this morning. police are warning people in the fruitvale neighborhood to be extra careful. but they are also making a plea because they do believe there are more victimming out there and they want the victims to come forward. they say that's been a problem so far. but they think -- if they reach

out, they think it will help. police first got wind of this string of attacks last week when they got one report and that report grew to others. police say the attacks happened in the fruitvale district. the age is proud, 19 to 54 years old. but there are similarities. the women are all latina, the neighborhoods all spanish- speaking. the women are all walking alone and asked for money. if they had it, they handed it over and the suspects took off. but if they didn't, they were assaulted. at least one attack happened in a high traffic area. police are worried because they believe the violence has escalated. >> there's similar descriptions about how these crimes are committed. but because this one victim was severery injured -- severely injured, the family actually took her to the hospital so

that she can receive treatment. >> reporter: there are several suspects as well ranging in age between 25 and 54. the suspects might be working in teams. what they are doing, they are reaching out to the media, to get the word out. they are going to churches, community groups, nonprofit groups, to find a way to reach out to any possible victims, have them come forward, to get more information, better suspect information and hopefully stop this from happening again. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:04. well, the power is back on in one oakland neighborhood after a transformer exploded. it happened last night about 9:45 on 41st street near telegraph avenue. a witness told us she heard a loud noise and then she saw a power line fall down onto her car. about 300 customers lost power for a few hours.

a san jose firefighter still in the hospital this morning after having a heart attack at the scene of a three- alarm fire at st. patrick's cathedral. the fire started around 11:0 yesterday morning at st. patrick's in downtown san jose. investigators think the fire started near the altar. dozens of ofs were just getting the foyer -- of firefighters were just getting it under control when he collapsed. they used a defibrillator. >> this is a tough day for all of us and for the citizens of san jose. this is one of their own. we're all family here. >> a structural engineer will be coming in to see if the building is safe inside. parishioners will be worshiping at a nearby church until the

i will have your numbers for you -- coming up. >> thank you, rosemary. we have new information about a developing story we first told you about on the morning news. three people are dead including the gunman after a shooting inside a new jersey supermarket. this is new ground video from the scene. the gunman is identified as a 23-year-old ex-marine who had just started working at the store for about two weeks. he foyered 16 rounds when he shot and killed two coworkers, a young man and an 18-year-old woman. the shooter wore body armor and held store employees hostages. after killing his victims, he committed suicide. you this information about a missing u.s. journalist in syria. the czech embassy is saying syrian forces are holing austin -- holding austin heights here. he's a contributor to "the

pritchett will be heading to the convention and will have updates. a bill here in california that would ban gay therapy for minors is now on the desk of the governor. yesterday, the senate approved the bill that would ban california children from undergoing therapy to change their sexual orientation. if the governor signs it, california would be the first state to impose such a ban. colleges are reaching out to students to make sure they get a knight sleep. a few schools are handing out earplugs and holding seminars

this morning. a tsunami warning, though, is still in effect for the phillippines and indonesia. local radio has reported that a house collapsed and power has been knocked out to -- knocked out to several philippine cities. a san jose school is holding a grand opening ceremony. this comes after the school was damaged from a fire. >> reporter: i just got a peek inside. i can tell you it smells like a new car inside.

defense attorneys for michelle le's killer are arguing that some evidence was gathered during an unreasonable search and should not be allowed. that motion was denied. so the trial will begin on september 17th. prosecutors say she killed the nursing student because she believed that l. he was having an affair with the father of estebon's child. happening now, a horrifying crash that involves a stolen police car taken from the police department earlier this morning. our reporter is out there at the scene. we see some pictures. what's going on right now. >> reporter: this was a -- this was a brazen crime. just take a look at theland vehicle -- at the l.a.p.d. vehicle. it slammed into the starbucks,

turning that coffee shop into a drive-threw. we are ally told the driver -- we're told the driver stole the police car. after hitting the starbucks, he spun out in the middle of the street, getting ejected from the vehicle. in the process his leg was severed. he's in the hospital. all we know is he's 25 years old. police have -- police have not identified him. he will face felony charges after this. in the meantime, we're on la brea. this is a main thoroughfare. the streets are all blocked off. people are finding it tough. cops will be here investigating all morning long. we can tell you that the suspect has lost a leg in this accident. he's in critical condition. in the meantime, no one is entering this area any time soon while police continue their investigation and that's the latest from the midcity

hantavirus in yosemite national park. two more visitors have reportedly come down with the virus. now many bay area families have been wondering if they may be exposed. two people have died and a total of six people have become six. now doctors are getting calls from patients about them possibly contracting the virus at the village this yosemite. >> you want to be aggressive and treat the symptoms as they come. you certainly don't want to wait home and wait for the symptoms to get worse. >> symptoms can take six months to surface. they include cough, fever, shortness of breath and nausea. there are some treatments for the virus but it is often fatal. turning now to election news. mitt romney rearranged, changed

today's scientists may get a closer look at two dolphins swimming in the south san francisco canal. they've been watching these dolphins since wednesday. there's one right there. if the dolphins are still in the canal today, the scientists plan to join them in the water to make sure they are okay. last night, some people gather gathered to get a rare glimpse of the dolphins. >> people are required to stay 100 feet away from them. we ask that you do that and so you can participate in this. >> sh
