lots of college football action today. good evening, everyone. >> we're on a special time so we could bring you the football game. it's saturday night which means many are hitting a night on the town. the dunbar bridge doesn't reopen until tuesday, though. >>reporter: so far so good, and you can see the cluster of construction cranes and lights in the distance. we went in close to see the work going on right now. the first thing you notice is the concrete is gone, and there's a huge gap in the road bed. under the blue tent welders are working nonstop prepping the bridge for a seismic joint on the eastern end. the rebar is newly installed, and when the new joint made up

of 16 steel plates is put into place it will help in earthquake safety. >> we've only used these on the main span of the new bay bridge project. this is kind of a prototype for what we'll be doing on the bay bridge in the next few months. we've freed the bridge up to move more during an earthquake, so we've expanded it between these two sections which required this new type of joint so it can move freely during an earthquake. >>reporter: what's been launched here on the fremont side of the bridge is a replay of what was done over the memorial day holiday. if you're one of the 60,000 people who drive this bridge daily you may have noticed night work, lane closures the past few months getting ready for this. again so far no surprises and the weather couldn't be better for getting the retrofit done.
