has been rushed to the hospital after being stabbed multiple times. ktvu reporter georgia mean dela vega is live to explain why neighbors had concerns at this house where the stabbing happened. >> reporter: a police car is blocking a portion of newbridge street, because they don't want anybody to disrupt the investigation going on inside this house. you can see a forensics lab van parked out here in front of the home in front of the san ma day yes sheriff's office. inside there are editions looking for evidence from this stabbing. we do not know if they have found the weapon used, but we do know that the victim is a resident of the home. this all happened at 3:30 in the morning. police found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds. he couldn't speak when officers arrived, and told that he lost a lot of blood. he was transferred to the hospital. told he is in stable condition; but don't know how serious his injuries are. now, police took four men into

their police car and drove them back to the police station. they are questioning them at this hour. told by officers that all four men lived in the home. they are not calling them suspects; but they do want information from them. so everyone is back in the department being interviewed. we're told there's trance later there, because one of the conditions is that many of them speak spanish. no arrests have been made. we do not know what led up to the stabbing. neighbors are telling us that at least off camera that they're concerned because they've always seen a lot of traffic, a lot of cars and people going in and out of the house. but they too have questions and want to know exactly what happened this morning. reporting live, georgia mean delavega. 7:03. a taxi driver could face charges after crashing his cab into a gas meter in oakland. it happened at trask and mavis streets around 3:30 this

morning. firefighters had to use special tools to reach a gas shutoff valve. ten people were evacuated from an apartment building next door. some people left as soon as they heard the crash. >> immediately jumped out of the bed and ran outside. it was so loud that thought the car was going to go through the bedroom. >> the people evacuated have now been allowed to return. valet yes police investigating the fifth deadly police shooting since may. ktvu's alex savage is in valeo to tell how the community is reacting to this. alex. >> reporter: relatives of the man killed don't believe the shooting was justified; but police say that man was holding what appeared to be a real handgun. it turned out to be an air-soft pellet gun. last night community members geared for a individual all to remember area mere row shot to death in front of his house. that's when two officers tried

to question the two men sitting in a white thunder bird parked on pepper drive. the officer shined a spotlight into the car, and then say the driver grabbed what appeared to be a gun from his waistband-aid and gestured toward the officers. that's when officers fired at the car, then paused telling the truck driver to show his hands. police say the man reached toward the center console. and so police fired a second time. the driver's sister told us she witnessed the shooting. >> they reloaded in front of me and stood on top of the roof of the car and shot him, and shot and shot. they shot at least 6 to 8 times. >> reporter: this morning several candles were seen burning right near the scene of the shooting. police say the man killed never fired the pellet gun he was holding, and police tell us he was on parole for a weapons violation at the time. a second man was also wounded by police gunfire yesterday. a 21-year-old who this morning is recovering in the hospital. after the shooting police searched the car.

they did find ecstasy pills inside that appeared to be for sale. both of the officers involved in this shooting are now on paid leave as the investigation continues. live this morning in valeo, alex savage. police searching for a gunman who fired shots at a man in a wheelchair right in front of city hall. it happened yesterday. police say the 23-year-old victim who did not know the suspect had argued with the gunman before the shooting. the man in the wheelchair rolled out of that chair to avoid the bullets and was not shot. police say the shooter is described only as an african american man. he was driving a white or silver chevy suburban with 02- inch chrome rims. 7:06. police making an arrest following a hit and run accident that may be gang- related. police say the suspect was driving away from the scene of an argument near nunez drive and fleckingger avenue when he hit a man and a woman.

the victims were rushed to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. an hour after the accident, police arrested the alleged driver jimmy kopas, booked into the santa clara jail on suspicion of felony hit and run. time 7:06. police looking at surveillance video trying to determine who vandalized a community memorial. for the third time in its history, the sculpture that honors victims of the east bay hills fire has been damaged. someone cut off five metal bars that represent burned, but regrowing trees. twenty-five people died in that fire storm in 1991. 7:70. later today, president obama is heading to louisiana to sure i have the after the of hurricane isaac. the president will meet emergency workers who have been trying to evacuate people from areas that are still flooded and restore power. republican presidential nominee mitt romney visited the area on friday. later this week, president obama will join democrats in

charlotte, north carolina, for their national convention, and coming up at 7:15, have a live report from charlotte with the one question democrats will have to answer this week as they officially renominate president obama for another run for the white house. time now 7:70. students and teachers say they will rally tomorrow outside of san francisco city hall in an effort to save city college. now, the school is at risk of possibly shutting down. the state has cut more than $03 million in funding for the city college over the past three years. that has led to a reduction in class sizes, cancellation of summer sessions and some unfilled teaching jobs. leaders say they plan to launch the yes on aid campaign. they're hoping to raise a parcel tax. it is 7:08. happening now, the down barten bridge remains shut down for the long labor day holiday; but caltrans construction crews say they are right on schedule. and they expect to complete their work on the bridge by

looks like. >> protesters wanted to call attention to corporations' influence on politics. some held signs about union and veterans' rights and called for immigration reform. >> hold the democratic -- the democratic party accountable. the democrats do a lot of good things, but like the rest of the government there's way too much corporate money. >> at least two people were arrested for carrying con sealed knife and assaulting a government official. >> time now 7:18. a california delegate will not be at the democratic national convention because of an incident at the hotel of the california delegation. the delegate report delay came back to the hotel drunk with another delegate early yesterday morning. the hotel staff report delay became very concerned when one of the delegates fell and appeared to be unconscious. hotel staff say the other delegate started to argue with

statement. he said that for many americans today is another day of worrying when their next paycheck will come. mitt romney is at his home today practicing the for the three debates with president obama in the weeks ahead. first debate is scheduled for october the 3rd. >> investigators say he died after a night of drinking at a fraternity house. a spokesperson said he was pledging the pheta kai fraternity. police are investigating whether hazing was involved in his death. >> appalling to think someone died from trying to be a part of the organize. >> the fraternity will be suspended until the investigation is complete. time now 7:20. >> security changes take effect in nap pa state hospital this week following an escape earlier this year from the hospital.

the nap pa valley register reports the psychiatric hospital will close four observation i can acrossings in a high-security area starting this friday. guards will be on a roving parol that rotate between other i can acrossings. it comes after a patient climbed a gate at the hospital become in january and escaped. that man was fund the next morning at a nearby grocery store. a 28-year-old woman had to be treated for minor injuries after being rescued from a mount tam ill -- a helicopter responded around 7 last night to a medical emergency on one of the trails. the woman was lying on a rock being monitored by a park ranger. she was hoisted about 50 feet up into the waiting chopper and taken to a nearby hospital. time now 7:21. a lot of drivers didn't let the highest gas prices over the labor day weekend keep them home. today's gas prices match the labor day national record that was set four years ago.

the department purchased six new bikes. their goal to reduce vandalism and curfew violations at parks. officers can perform traffic stops. currently a third of the officers are trained for bike patrols and more will be trained later this month. in less than an hour, hundreds of bicyclists will be riding through the streets of san francisco. taking a live look right now at where the 38th annual metro men bike race is about to get underway. the first racers will leave lee vie citrus plaza and union street at 8 this morning. the last group of racers starts at 3 this afternoon. the race was originally known as the san francisco grand property. a couple of people setting up chairs to watch the excitement, and i imagine that it could have impack on traffic in the area. >> time 7:25. i know baseball games today in

alameda. the on-shore breeze very light, almost nonexistent this morning. a look at temperatures today, upper 40s in the north bay valley, spots, 50s out there and around the bay. looking at noon-time numbers, low to mid-60s at the coast, 70s around the bay, low 80s inland and then mostly cloudy and warm for the afternoon. a few degrees above yesterday's highs. today into tomorrow cool down slightly with a bigger drop into the second half of the week. in the weekend upper 80s in the forecast for the warmer spots. 7:26. the festival wraps up in the nevada desert. a year after being put on promotion for allowing too many people in the festival stayed under the federally imposed limit. the bureau of land management said the biggest crowd was friday, 52,000 people were there. the off-beat art and music festival had more than 53,000 people on two different days last year. that's when the limit was

out there with new video of the big quake safety project. so how does it look? >> reporter: standing on the dun barten bridge. from this vantage point, strange to look back wards and see zero cars on the bridge except for the one vehicle patrol here. the construction site is several hundred feet away on the incline of the eastern span where you see the construction cranes and that massive equipment parks in the middle of the bridge. the work going on there is to install a new seismic joint, and crews are done installing that joint. this is video from caltrans from the overnight hours that shows the 12 plates that make up the seismic joint being laid out. now as part of the project caltrans had to raise the bridge 5 inches in order to put the plates in place. >> raising the bridge 5 inches.

in order for cars not to feel that 5-inch dip after they pass this at least, then ding the 100-foot of concrete taper. >> and that's the work that still needs to be finished, pouring lay years of concrete over the new plates, letting it set so that drivers don't notice all the changes. once that happens, caltrans has to restripe the pavement and put the bare years become in place. while they did get progress overnight, there's work to be done. the scheduled reopening time of the down barten bridge is still 5:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, and it is too early to call at this point whether they'll be done with the work and able to open early. live on down barten bridge, ally rasmussen. 7:32, beverly hills received a very early wake-up call today, a 3.3 magnitude earthquake shook the city at 3.26 this morning. seismologists say it was a shallow quake, so it felt stronger for people near the open center. beverly hills police report no

injuries, but received dozens of phone calls asking about the tremor. in nearby west los angeles, police say there were no phone calls. time 7:32. an around the clock vigil continues at a hospital where one of their own is being treated after having a heart attack on the job. frank ryan is in critical but stable condition. he collapsed on thursday fighting a fire at saint patrick cathedral. the firefighters taking turns, taking meals to his family as they maintain a vigil at the regional medical center of san jose. they've also started collecting money to help the family with expenses. >> sleep overnight just waiting for word that if there's any change and, of course, hopeful that it will be good news. >> ryan is a veteran of the san jose firearm. his family members said he's showing signs of improvement. they're optimistic he will pull through. it is 7:33. protesters plan to gather for a

march and rally this morning outside the chevron refinery. they want company executives to be prosecuted for last month's fire claiming they put workers and the community at risk. the march is being held by united public workers for action. starts at 10 this morning. people plan to meet at point richmond washington park and then march to the front gates of the refinery. >> time 7:33. new this morning, a suicide bomber blew up a car into a u.s. consulate suv today. it happened in pakistan. look at this. the state department said two americans and two pakistans who work for the u.s. consulate in pakistan are among 19 people who were injured. a spokesman said two pakistans were also killed. this happened in an area near pakistan's tribal region. that is the main sanctuary for the taliban and al-qaeda in pakistan. >> 0:34. police have identified the man shot and killed near children's hospital in oakland over the weekend.

police say 29-year-old lorenzo ward was approached and shot by someone in the area of 53rd street and martin luther king, jr., way late saturday night. no arrests have been made. >> wildfires have firefighters very busy this labor day. in northern california, thousands of campers were evacuated from the angeles national forest because of this fire. it started in the san gabrielle canyon yesterday and. it has burned 400 acres. the canyon closed today because of the fires. it's only about 5% contained. the cause of the fire still under investigation. now the north pass fire in mend see know county is about 58% contained. the lightning sparked fire has burned more than 41,000 acres since it started on august 18th. seven homes have been destroyed. opportunity-one others are still threatened. evacuation orders remain in effect for areas around the community of kovolo. law enforcement will be

busy today willing for drunk drivers. so far chp said they have arrested nearly 900 people statewide from 6:00 friday night through 6:00 yesterday morning. that's down from last year, but deadly drunk driving accidents are up. the chp said 11 people have died so far. the chp will wrap up their enforcement later tonight. with thousands of people geared in oakland for this year's pride festival. the theme was it's a celebration. the people were celebrating everything from the repeal of the don't ask don't tell policy to president obama's stance on supporting gay marriage. >> there's not any generation that can say they've seen so much gross. some people say we're done. not in the least bit. >> last year 35,000 people attended the event. organizers expect that number to be higher this year. >> and if oakland pride can generate enough money they hope to add a parade next year.

police are investigating several vandalism attacks that report delay targeted the oakland pride festival. vandals broke windows at the community bank on the bay at broadway and 17th street. windows were also smashed at a bank of america on lakeside, and a police car's tires were slashed and slurs were crawled on buildings. that bay if i is similar to comments posted on the web site of an anarchist. 7:36. nine months after the suzanne g komen foundation sparked controversy by refusing to fund planned parenthood. a lot fewer people have signed up for this year's walk. registration for the race for the cure is down about 50% from last year. donations are also down about 65%. the suzanne g komen reversed it decision on pulling funding for planned parenthood following the public out cry.

the oakland as are hoping to raise awareness for the need for a cure for breast cancer. more than 500 breast cancer survivors formed a human ribbon across the field in oakland yesterday. the aids also presented check to various cancer organizations, including friend of faith in memory of long-time ktvu reporter faith vancher. offices of the city of oakland will be closed today for labor day. police, fire, emergency services will not be affected by the holiday. but today is also a parking holiday. so you drivers won't have to pay parking meters. all oakland libraries are closed today. also all ac transit buses will operate on sunday schedules today because of labor day. riders can check the ac transit web site for all of the latest information on your route. and muni today is running on a sunday schedule. that means the buses will be running less often. some routes won't run at all. san francisco parking meters

the obama administration increasing the pressure on iran to negotiate more seriously about its nuclear program. as one way to prevent an israeli attack according to a report in today's new york times. the times said the u.s. along with more than 25 other nations will hold the largest ever mine- sweeping exercise in the persian gulf to prevent iran from trying to block exports through the strait of orsmuth. the obama administration hopes wrapping up the pressure will give israel a way to back off from a military attack. 7:46. france's foreign minister said he has been discussing with the u.s. and britain a tough response to syria if the government uses chemical or biological whips in its civil war. in the meantime in the syrian capital city of damascus, two explosions damaged a building under construction near the joint cheese of staff.

the explosions did not cause significant damage; but because they went off in an area ring with check points considered a serious blow to the government. time 7:46, a tense scene in washington state after a man was killed in a standoff with swat teams. it happened yesterday afternoon in this wooded area north of seattle. deputies originally got a call about a man shot in the leg. that's when they discovered someone was firing shots at them and at people in the neighborhood. >> like "did you guys get shot at." because they heard something. they stopped, and now a bullet hole. >> sheriff's deputies will be back out in that area looking for another possible suspect. 7:47. evacuation orders have been lifted for some of the areas threatened by three fires in northwestern nebraska. one of the fires is close to being contained, but strong winds helped the other two fires grow over the weekend. more than 280 square miles have

an argument near noons drive and flicking year avenue saturday night when he ran over a man and a woman. the victims rushed to the hospital with nonlife- threatening injuries. then an hour later, police arrested the alleged driver jimmy kopas, booked into the santa clara county jail on suspicion of felony hit and run. 8:33. police have identified the man shot and killed near children's hospital in oakland over the weekend. police say 29-year-old lorenzo ward was approached and shot by someone in the area of 53rd street and martin luther king, jr., way late saturday night. no arrests have been made. time now 8:34. new this morning, a suicide bomber set off a bomb, a car that rammed into a u.s. consulate suv today in pakistan. the state department says two americans and two pakistanis who work for the u.s. consulate in pakistan, they are among 19 people wounded in this attack.

a spokesperson says two pakistani were killed. this all happened in an area near pakistan's tribal region. that is the main sanctuary for the taliban and al-qaeda in that country. 8:34. wildfires burning across the state have firefighters busy this labor day. in northern california, thousands of campers were evacuated from the angeles national forest because of a brush fire. it started in the san gabrielle canyon yesterday and has burned about 400 acres. the canyon will be closed today because of the fire. it's only about 5% contained. and a cause is still under investigation. the north pass fire in mend see know county is now about 58% contained. the fire has burned more than 41,000 acres since it began on august 18th. seven homes have been destroyed, and 21 others are still threatened. evacuation orders are still in effect for areas around the community of covello. there was an earthquake in

beverly hills today. a 3.3 magnitude quake shook the city about 0:26 this morning. seismologists say it was a shallow quake. so it felt stronger if you were near the open center. peverley hills reporting no injuries or damage, but they say they've received dozens of phone calls of people asking about it. and a nearby west los angeles, no calls came in. 8:35, law enforcement will be busy today willing for drunk drivers. so far the chp say they have arrested nearly 900 people statewide from 6:00 friday night through 6:00 yesterday morning. that's down from last year, but deadly drunk driving accidents are up. the chp said that 11 people have died so far, and the chp will wrapper their enforcement later tonight. time 8:36. thousands geared for this year's gay pride festival. the theme was it's a celebration, and people celebrated everything from the repeal of the don't ask don't

hold a rally and march. everything will get started over here at washington park. that's where people will gather later on this morning, and then what they'll do is get together and they'll march to the chevron refinery, which is six blocks away in that direction, and they will be headed there to the front gates of that facility later on this morning. this is all organized by a group called united public workers for action. and essentially they say they want executives to be prosecuted for last month's leak and fire here at the facility in richmond. they claimed it put workers and a community at risk, and something has to be done in response. protesters also believe that chevron and other oil companies should at some point be run by labor groups and community groups. >> have to start the struggle to take these industries back into criminal of workers and the community immediately. >> otherwise they will destroy the planet. >> reporter: protesters also want chef reason to share some of their profits with the community, because at this point thousands of people have

ever mine-sweeping exercise in the persian gulf to prevent iran from trying to block oil exports through the strait of hormuz. according to times, the obama administration hopes that ramping up pressure on iran will give israel a way to back off from a military attack. france's foreign minister said he has been discussing with the u.s. and britain a tough response to syria if the government uses chemical or biological weapons in its civil war. in the meantime, the syrian city of damascus, two explosions damaged a building under construction near the syrian military joint chiefs of staff. the explosions did not cause significant damage to the building, because they went off in an area ringed with security check points it is considered a serious blow to the government. a tense scene yesterday in washington state after a man was killed in a standoff with swat teams. it happened in the afternoon in a wooded area north of seattle.

the deputies originally got a call about a man who had been shot in the leg. that's when they discovered someone was shooting at deputies and at people in the neighborhoods. >> they were like did you get shot at, because they heard something, and we didn't. sheriff's deputies out in that area again today searching for another possible suspect. 8:49. evacuation orders have been lifted for some of the areas threatened by three wildfires in northwestern nebraska. one of those fires is close to being contained; but strong winds helped the other two fires grow over the weekend. more 285 square miles burned including at least 27,000 acres in south dakota. nebraska's governor said it will likely take several more days to fully contain the fires. and the coast guard said 7 people have been rescued after their boat caught fire in washington state. it happened saturday night about 15 miles south of

bellingham. the coast guard said the 7 people aboard jumped into the water and were rescued by a passing boat. they were taken to a nearby marina and were not hurt. a tow company is now trying to salvage the burned boat. >> and a fire at a vacant hotel in portland, oregon is being investigated. started around 3:00 yesterday morning at what used to be the thunder bird hotel. took firefighters about four hours to get the fire under criminal. the building being used for storage and has been empty since 2005. no firefighters were hurt. well the pie lot who died in a crash at an air show in iowa was a veteran pie lot with more than 20 years of flying experience. his name was glenn skid smith. he was flying a soviet era military training jet when it crashed and burst into flames on saturday. yesterday fellow pie lot flew a squadron of planes over that crash site in his memory before the air show resumed. >> this is what he would have wanted. he would have done the same
