officer, kenyon youngstrom, fighting for his life. he was shot yesterday by a man in a jeep. alex savidge is at the john muir medical center with an update on the officer's condition. >> reporter: i just spoke a short time ago with the chp spokesperson who told me that wounded officer's family members and fellow officers have remained here at his bedside throughout the my. he's in icu here and at last check does remain in critical condition. the chp identified the officer as 37-year-old kenyon youngstrom. colleagues say he's a husband and father of four. the chp says he's also a seven- year veteran of the force. he was shot by a driver during a traffic stop in alamo yesterday. a spokesman tells me the chp cannot release a whole lot of

information about his injuries. youngstrom's family is asking for everyone's prayers as doctors do what they can to savely life. >> this is a very difficult time for officers. >> we're an extended family. officer thoughts and prayers are with the family. >> reporter: we're told that officer kenyon youngstrom is a former army reservist who began his career right here in contra costa county. he moved to a different patrol area for a different time and had just come back to work. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, alex. today investigators will try to re-create the events that led up to shots being fired.

coming up at 7:30, what we're learning about video that may have played a critical role in the investigation. a bay area congresswoman will join the volunteers in the search for sierra lamar. janine de la vega is live now and we know that sierra has been missing for about six months now. janine? >> reporter: well, the search center opens up in one hour. that's when volunteers will start to file in here. and they will be visited by congresswoman zoe. we just spoke to an individual who organized an event for sierra's family. sierra has not been seen since march when she left her morgan hill home to go to school.

volunteers from the kids klass foundation have been searching and looking for signs of sierra. one woman said she felt strongly. i just felt really strong when i -- compel -- compelled when i saw her picture. i was like i have to go out there. ly mom said, you are not? you are -- i said mom, i'm going -- my mom said, you are not? i said mom, i'm going. jen. >> jennifer, the woman that you heard from earlier, they say plan on spelling out the word "hope" on the ground.

zoe lofyin will be here to -- lofgrin will be here. breaking news. a campaign aide has just announced or just said that the president's convention speech tomorrow night will be moved inside because of the weather forecast. meanwhile, it was a big opening night at the democratic national convention as michelle obama took the stage and brought the crowd to their feet. >> i have seen firsthand that being president doesn't change who you are. no, it reveals who you are. [ cheers and applause ] >> the first lady's speech was highly delegated.

we'll go to charlotte later with who is going to take the stage next. romney and president obama are in a dead heat with both men at 48% now. 7:06. well, somebody stole a large american flag in pet lieu haw ma right --ette -- petaluma from aing about on each washington street. police say the flag was cut down and stolen between monday night and morning. it's tolud at about $500 -- it's valued at about $500. firefighters in colusa county are still fighting two fires. i want to show you two fires that we just got into the newsroom. the fire started at 4:00

yesterday afternoon off highway 16 in the rumsey canyon area. that highway is closed from state route 20 to about 7 miles east of the co lieu so county line. the flames are only 10% contained. firefighters are making progress in southern california on that angeles national forest fire. it's now about 25% contained. some seven firefighters suffered injuries battling the blaze. a hiker had to be airlifted to safety. so far the flames are not threatening homes. riders have been treating and one tweeted, the commute was hel. another asked which was worse? the jeeps' fan or a crying

backup there. so be aware of that. 7:09. let's head to steve. well, well, some rain out there. a lot of low clouds -- a little bit of rain shower activity. a little bit of thunder as well. we have low clouds, the high clouds as well. really starting to light up here as you head out -- as you head out to the valley. we've had rain up in the santa cruz mountains. thunder, near felton. a couple of reports about an hour ago ago -- an hour ago. and then to morgan hill. sign of maybe things to calm here for the next 48 hours. the system starts to come up. so cooler for many today. it will be muggy inland. not so much coast and bay. mostly cloudy, thinned 60s, 70s and 80s for the most part due to the cloud cover.

everyone else is stuck due to the cloud cover. i don't think things are going to change too much. we have one band here. there could be another one in the afternoon. if we get a break, that will add instability. that moisture is being drawn up today and tomorrow from a low right off the coast. we'll swing in a lot of cloud cover. so partly to mostly cloudy. cooler. we already have some showers here and they are lighting up repy -- they are lighting up early. 60s, 70s and 80s. a few upper os and kind of a tropical mix in there. we'll carry that into thursday, clear it out on friday. it looks like a night and morning low pattern. a lucky student out there, you have a chance to leave your

ktvu.com is steeling the convention live when -- stream, the convention live when we're not on the air. 7:18. berkeley police still out there searching for two armed robbers from an incident sunday night. it happened near chaning way and ellsworth street. at about 9:00 p.m. two students were robbed at gunpoint. their backpacks were stolen. they were not hurt. the suspects are described as african-american, with an average build. one had a goatee. he was wearing a purple sweatshirt dark pants. the man who was shot and killed in the parking lot of a fast forward restaurant in richmond has been identified. police say 38-year-old javier compose was shot to death

--compos was shot outside of a taco bill. police say it appears to be a family dispute. a suspect has been arrested. an arrest has been made in the death a san francisco hairstylist who was killed in his diamond heights hole. police say witnesses helped -- home. police say witnesses helped identify this man as the man who killed eric escolon. the two took met at a bar and took a cab his apartment. the suspect was arrested on sunday and is being held on murder, burglary and a probation violation. jury deliberations begin today in the drew peterson murder trial. peterson is facing first-degree murder charges in the 2004 death of his third wife, kathleen savio. the former bolingbrook police sergeant became a suspect in

savio's death only after his fourth wife disappeared in 2007. peterson has pleaded not guilty. if guilty, he faces up to 60 years in prison. we'll get a first-hand look later at the newly renovated cow palace. the bulls' hockey team invested $2 million to make the up grades. there's a now sound system, upgraded locker rooms and and new scoreboard that you can see from a 360-degree angle. their season begins next month. well, mcdonald's is about to open up vegetarian restaurants but not in this country. they will expand their business in india. it has just 250 stores in india. that's where 40% of the population does not eat meat. mcdonald's is not saying where

unleaded gas averaged $4.19 in the bay area yesterday, an 8.7% increase from the $3.82 average price the night of the august 6th fire. the average price of gas was $4.16 in the east bay yesterday. $4.18 in the south bay and $4.23 in san francisco. it was just recently that senator dianne feinstein asked for a federal probe into this gas spike right after the chevron refinery -- >> right. >> she said it didn't make sense why it went up like that. let's check in with tara. >> there is a lot of traffic out there. if we take a look at the maps, i can show you an earlier accident. it's been dom damage. this is el portal drive. the accident was so bad, it actually damaged part of the concrete there.

track stop in alamo. 37-year-old officer kenyon youngstrom rehaynes in critical condition at john muir -- remains in critical condition at john muir in walnut creek. he was trying to pull over a jeep yesterday. claudine wong has more information that we're learning about gunman who is now dead. >> reporter: we still don't have the identity confirmed from the chp. but we have new information about the green jeep involved in all of this yesterday morning. we got this information just within the last half-hour. again, we don't have the identity of the driver but law enforcement sources have told us the vehicle was pulled over for retired registration. the tags did expire in january of this year. that deep was registered to a 36-year-old man whose last known address was in sausalito.

>> officer down. >> he did say an officer done. i did try to call him. no response. >> let him we're gonna call the shooting team and advise him that we're en route. >> reporter: you are listening to the dispatch tapes. what's still unclear is what led up to that point in time. the two southbound officers, tried to pull the jeep over. one witness said he heard the shots. >> i started hearing some popping and realized it was gunfire. >> aun of the officers contacted the -- one of the officers contacted the driver, the driver shot at the officer.

he's a seven-year veteran. he has a wife and four children. colleagues describe him as a dedicated family man. family members and fellow officers are keeping watch on youngstrom at the hospital around the clock. and there are family members by his bedside and and more are coming from around the country. a man is missing after the chico float. brett olsen apparently walked away from his friends at beer can beach. the now, olsen is described as just over 6 feet tall, about 150, to 160 pounds. he has brown hair, brown eyes. he's a student at cal poly san luis obispo. if you have any information

today. oakland police are investigating a shooting last night. a man was shot and wounded near 25th and davis street. police say he actually drove himself to the hospital. this morning, we don't know his condition and so far no arrests have been made. 7:36. a 13-year-old boy is arrested at school. police in south san francisco say he was armed with a gun and ammunition. the 8th grader was taken into -- into custody. two teens are arrested on suspicion of setting fire -- setting fires at a school this paul low alto. it happened saturday about 11:00 a.m. police arrested -- police arrested two boys, 15 and 16 years old. no other buildings were

damaged. officers aarrested the -- arrested the teens and the boys were released to their parents. authorities are reviewing the case. 7:37. well, employees of the san francisco water department may be punished for enrolling in a water department program that is intenned tenned for -- intended for low-income families. the program is designed to help families of four than 36,000 a year. those qualify members get a bill reduction for $14 a month. the city of san francisco also troying to clean up the homeless population by targeting chronic alcoholics. that treatment would take play at city jail.

police in san francisco -- take a lock at this. sunday morning near chinatown, a group of women convinced a 60- year-old woman to give them her valuables. they say her money and jewels -- jewels needed to be blessed because she stepped in blood. that's when they stole valuables.

>> as the victim was walking back, she notice her bag didn't seem quite the same weight. and when she looked into it, she found out her money and jewelry was gone. >> police say all of this happens on market and third streets monday. and this may have happened before. the university of california has reached a tentative settlement with almost two dozen protesters who were pepper sprayed at uc dave vase. 19 students filed -- davis. 19 students filed a lawsuit. terms of the proposed settlement have not been disclosed. the university board of regents and a federal court in san francisco must sign off on the settlement. disturbing traffic stuff out there, tara.

police want your help this morning. they are trying to fine a missing placer county woman last seen almost a month ago in san jose. victoria was seen on surveillance video in front a coffee shop. police say her wallet and cell phone were found inside a store. she's described as 37 years old, about 5'7.

a new charter school has opened up in oakland. it's the 100 black men community school. it was started -- it was started by the bay area black kepter. it's located in the former thurgood marshall school right above 106th avenue and it's opened to about 90 students. organizers say the all-male school will deal with issues that specifically affect african-american men. well, a new parking garage in downtown -- in downtown vallejo was supposed to take it easier for those who take their cars. although it was finished about seven months -- seven months ago, commuters taking the bay link ferry have not been able

the deadly chp shootout in alamo yesterday, one more update. the officer, kenyon youngstrom, remains in critical condition at this hour. investigators hope video from his dash-board camera will show what provoked the suspect to shoot youngstrom during yesterday's traffic stop. alex savidge is at john muir medical center now. you have talked to the organizer of the vigil for the officer. >> reporter: yes. there is certainly a community outpouring. i can tell you that family members and fellow chp officers, it's been an agonizing time for them.
