two buildings there. ja anything janine de la vega is there. what is going on. >> reporter: yes , the victim is the suspect and there now treated for his injuries. behind me, i am standing here and this man is on top of the roof and was trying to jump from the building to the other building next door and he jumped and he fell 20 feet and wedged between an 18 inch gap and became trapped. police and fire crews were called here this morning and found 32-year-old man being trapped. we got video that shows that. he actually called police from his cell phone and told them

that two men were chasing him with a knife so he was trying to get away and hide and that is how he ended up getting stuck. >> he wedged himself in the building. he tried calling a family member. they responded out here and they could not get him out. he had -- i guess ripped a lot of his clothes off going down the side of the building because it is a good drop. at which point he had to call 911. >> fire crews brought in their urban search and rescue team. it took them 90 minutes to get him out. they used a rope with that and pulled corona out and sent him to the hospital. he admitted he lied. officers believe he was a suspect they were chasing last night. the chp was trying to get him for speeding. he was traveling at too high speeds so they ended up not following him and then found two cars crashed. they believe he was one of the

drivers that crashed his car and hit another car there. they believe that he got afraid and then that is why he hid and then became trapped in this predictment. we are being told by police that he will eventually be arrested. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. >> 6:03. overnight a fire in the mission district forced more than two dozen people to flee their homes. it started at 1:00 this morning at an apartment building there. firefighters were able to control the flames in 30 minutes. everybody got out okay. >> the fire -- go back inside -- floors -- fire and we have some fire damage and some extension of the fire into the first floor. >> the cause is still under investigation. 26 people are being helped by

the red cross. >> tributes are pouring in this morning for fallen chp officer kenyon youngstrum. he died last night after he was shot during a traffic stop on 680. claudine wong is at the office in martinez where a memorial is growing for the officer and father of four children. >> reporter: pam, certainly people expressing that in different ways. you can see people have left flowers, cards, flags and even a balloon here. the business of protecting the public also continues. we have been watching them. we know this is a difficult time for them because this is where he worked. other officers have volunteered to fill the void to allow them to take time off. everyone grieving in their own

way, officer kenyon youngstrum was pronounced there. he did that there. he is married with children and leaves behind them. >> this has been a life altering tragedy for the family and certainly a tragedy that has affected us all deeply to the core. >> officer youngstrum lived there with them, last night they held a vigil. they wore ribbons. they prayed. some of the children who attended that vigil actually go to school with his children and are still finding ways to express their sadness. >> i would want to say that i am sorry of what happened. i really care about what happened. >> officer youngstrum is being described as a man who absolutely loved his job and

who was a very giving man. a man who continues to give even in dit. he is an organ donor for eight recipients. a public memorial service is right now in the planning stages thousands of law enforcement expected to attend from across the country, in the meantime for those who want to help his family there is a fund set up to help his family at any wells fargo banks. >> more information is coming out regarding the gunman. investigators describe 36-year- old christopher boone lacey as a loner. forensic teams are going through his home there in chico, police have seized computers and disk drives, video shows officer youngstrum on the side of 680 dealing with a dead deer when another officer pulled over lacey's jeep for an obstructed license plate. youngstrum motioned for lacey to pull in behind his patrol

isn't that cool? and that's pretty cool. ♪ welcome back. 6:25. the number of west nile virus cases reached a high this week, almost 2000 confirmed cases, the cdc says there was a 25% increase in the last week, the worst ever since it was first discovered. so far 87 people have died this season. officials say a mild springtime, a hot summer and a lot of rain in some areas contributed to the increase. >> a march victory for pg&e, a state investigation concludes they did not cut corners over welding pipelines there. they were accused of doing that. whistle blowers allege inspections did not comply with

going on in new york. they are celebrating that the central bank in europe left rates unchanged. left things in a positive way. we will get you over to the business news in a minute. >> thank you for joining us on ktvu morning news. i have dave clark. >> i am pam cook. only on 2, we have overnight rescue of a man who became trapped in a narrow gap. this scene is near capital expressway in san jose with how the man got stuck between two walls and what police say he was doing. >> reporter: pam, the man was trapped between the orchard sunfully store and the indian market. it is very tight. it is an 18 inch gap between the would buildings. fire crews said it is like being trapped in a chimney. they believe he is trapped by

the highway patrol for speeding. then he crashed his car into another car and climbed on top of the roof to hide. now this is exclusive video. this is arturo corona being rescued. they used a rope to pull him up and officers say he was on top of the roof and fell 20 feet to the frowned and landed on his feet. he called police from his cellphone with a story they believe is phony. >> originally, he said he was trying to run from two people chasing him with knives. then he admitted that i was involved in an accident or i was part of the accident and i was trying to get away. >> reporter: police made the connection that he was the driver that chp was pursuing. it took the search and rescue team to rescue him using one of the rigs and a pully system. he is now being treated for his injuries. police say he was going to be

arrested for hit and run and evading police. reporting live from san jose,. eight people, homeless this morning in santa rosa over an overnight fire. it started on a duplex 9:00 last night. it took 25 minutes to get the fire under control and put the flames out. one of the units was destroyed. another one was severely damaged. >> there are indications it is purely accidental. we don't know the cause. >> luckily, no one was hurt. the families involved are being helped by the red cross. highway 17 is back open this morning. that is after a big rig fire shut down both directions for hours overnight. now the truck that you see there is carrying liquid nitrogen, the cab is a melted mess. it closed the highway near

summit road in the santa cruz mountains. >> he conturn his truck around. >> waiting to pass the accident. so, i have been here over three hours already. >> the southbound lanes were closed for three and a half hours. it took another two and a half hours to reopen the northbound lanes. it burned part of the hillside. it did not breakthrough the tank and was carrying liquid nitrogen and no one was hurt. >> the time is 6:33. flags all over california at half staff in honor of chp kenyon youngstrom:. the chp is trying to cope with this. claudine? >> reporter: it is a difficult time. they are trying to plan a memorial. but we know thousands of law

enforcement officers are expected to come for the memorial. in the meantime, people have been coming by the steel office where officer youngstrom worked to leave cards and flowers and balloons. the announcement came last night. the contra costa commander had to break the news that the 37-year-old had lost his life. he was shot on 680 when he pulled a man over. he was married and has four children. he was a man of deep faith. giving man who continues to do so even now. he donated his organs to eight different recipients. >> in his commitment to service and contribution, officer youngstrom is donating organs which will change the lives of many recipients. >> reporter: announcement of his death came before a vigil. a tight knight community where youngstrom and his family

lived. they wore blue and gold ribbons, the colors of the highway patrol. they mourned his loss. many of the children there go with youngstrom's four children to school and they are struggling to cope. >> if something happened to my parents, i am scared something will happen. >> reporter: a memorial fund for his family has been set up at any wells fargo bank. and the memorial being planned and the grieving continues. just within the last couple of minutes. while we are talking another person came by to loaf a plant. just to let them know they are being thought of and they are grieving for the husband, father, neighbor, friend, officer, who gave his life in the line of duty. >> claudine wong. the investigation into the gunman is intensifying as well. they are describe him as a

airport. look at this plane. a u.s. airways plane. it was taking off from philadelphia heading to dallas and they were told to bring the plane back over suspicion there may have been explosives on board. this happened a little while ago. this is now being called a law enforcement situation. a short while ago, we saw someone being escorted off the plane. we have very few details. you can see the plane, the u.s. airways plane landed safely in philadelphia. after being diverted back and taking off for dallas. the suspicion is that there may have been explosives on board. someone is escorted off the plane and that's about all we know. we are following this breaking news story from philadelphia. we will bring you more details as thereof veilable. turning -- they are available. > bill clinton made his intentions clear for the

thunderstorm over san jose with more coming up in five minutes. welcome back. here is a quick look at some of the stories we are following for you at 6:44. exclusive video to show you now. san jose firefighters rescuing a man. look at how stuck he is between two buildings. this is just a couple of hours ago. silver creek road and east capital expressway off 101. now police are saying that man is a suspect in an earlier crash and he had been running from the police. a fioricet two dozen people running out of their homes. it is under investigation now. the fire started about 1:00 at an apartment building near # # and fair oaks. luckily no one was hurt. funeral and memorial plans are being made now for chp officer kenyon youngstrom. he died last night about 6:00.

his hometown of fairfield head a vigil. they say he was phone for his generosity and his organs are now being donated to eight different recipients. we are following the developing news out of oakland. police are investigating a deadly shooting. alex savidge has been on the scene all morning long. >> they tell me the victim was a 24-year-old young man from the area. he was generous and he was kind-hearted. you can see behind me the crime scene is now cleared but this was a homicide investigation and it shut down macarthur boulevard at market street. they took away the man's body. a man showed up at the crime scene telling officers the victim in this case was his son. he was found shot to death in the middle of the street. this is after 2:00 in the

morning. they got calls about gunfire in the area. they focused their interest on a black jetta. again, in talking with relatives this morning. they he tell me a little bit about this man. and the man who was killed here happens to be the grand son of a former mayor of emoryville. that is according to the victim's brother. police have not positively identified the person killed this morning. they don't have a whole lot to go on as far as a description for the shooter in this case. >> in oakland, alex savidfe, ktvu news. they are investigating the reports of a theft of copies of presidential candidate mitt romney's tax records. an anonymous letter sent to his accounting firm in tennessee and on line demands a million dollars to keep the records out of the public eye.
