up. ktvu morning news continues. good morning, to you. welcome to friday it's september 7th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. let's check in with steve paulson. it is friday. >> it is. >> what will the weekend be like? >> it will be nice. yesterday we had the tropical clouds. mainly toward santa clara and san jose. most of that is gone. patchy fog on the marin coast. mostly sunny today. 60s and 70s and 80s. here is tara. thanks. this is a look at 280. traffic is move along fairly nicely. and up next we have a look at 880 near the oakland coliseum. same story. a lot of folks on the roadways. so far we don't have any major delays. let's head back to the desk. there is an all out search for a south san francisco father that police say

kidnapped his own children, stole a boat, and then took off. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong joins us now in south san francisco with what we are learning about the abduction. claudine. >> reporter: we are trying to replace the -- retrace the steps of the father what he did before leading up to the abduction of his two young children. we are now in south san francisco. this is the neighborhood where the two children live with their mother. this is where they were taken on tuesday afternoon. i want to show you a picture of the children two-year-old devin and sister three-year-old brooklyn. i talked to their mom this morning. their grandmother was home when christopher came by and took the children by force. she had been granting him visitation with the kids. she said she had no idea he would do something like this and disappear with the children. but on tuesday he took them and she hasn't heard from him since. police believe he took the kids in a rental car to the marina

and that is where he stole a 40- foot yacht. he had gone there a couple weeks ago inquiring about buying a boat. we do have a picture of that yacht to show you. it's named the unleashed. it has san francisco on the stern. that yacht was apparently spotted in vallejo on wednesday at 6:00 p.m.. it has not been seen since. we did talk to the coast guard. they did an aerial search yesterday. where he might be heading with those kids, still not clear. the mother of the children said in the past he's talked about monterey. the search this morning continues for this father and the two children he kidnapped. live in south san francisco claudine wong. time now 6:03. vallejo police have been busy. they spent the night looking for clues in a double homicide. neighbors heard several shots on atherton street about 9:15 last night. now when police got there they

say they found the bodies of a 31-year-old woman and 28-year- old woman inside. a 2.5-year-old boy was also inside but was not hurt. that same family member says the woman who was killed was pregnant. police say two african american men wearing hooded sweatshirts were seen running away from the scene after the shooting. chp has created two memorial funds supporting the family of fallen officer kenyon youngstrom. people are continuing to drop off candles and balloons at the police station where he was stationed. >> our deepest condolences are with them. that is to support them and their kids. >> reporter: officer youngstrom died wednesday night after being shot tuesday in alamo. the parents of the gunman went from oregon here to the bay area yesterday to meet with

investigators. lacy's uncle william talked to us by phone from connecticut. he told us the family is devastated and feels horrible about the officer who died. he also confirms that his nephew was bipolar and distanced himself with the family. officer youngstrom leaves behind a wife and four children ages 16, 13, 10, and 4. funds have been set up for them at wells fargo and mechanics bank. youngstrom's organs had been donated. they issued a statement this is our kenyon he is our hero. and we are comforted to know he continues to help others. coming up you will hear from an east bay couple who's son was a police officer also killed in the line of duty. and how donating his organs helped cope with their loss. your time is 6:05. hundreds of people are expected to gather in san jose this morning. they want help applying for temporary legal status here in the u.s. under new rules from

the obama administration. ktvu janine de la vega live with this story on more what this change means and how people can apply. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we are here at san jose state university a college many undocumented youth dream of attending. in just two hours they will be able to get help in filling out applications to obtain temporary legal status in the u.s.. now several hundred people are expected to come to catholic charities in san jose for a workshop on obama's deferred action program. the plan stops the deportation of many undocumented immigrants. republican critics accuse obama of drafting the plan to help boost his standing with latinos. i spoke to a san jose man that told me in spanish why he thinks the plan is needed. >> i have papers but i support the program. i know a lot of young people in san jose that would benefit because they want to continue

their education. >> reporter: to qualify for the program immigrants must prove they came to the u.s. before they were 16 are 30 or younger are in school, graduated or served in the military. some immigrants are too afraid to sign up for the program. others are waiting until after the election to apply for it. this free workshop begins at 8:00 a.m.. it will be held at the catholic charities on sanker road. this mornings election 2012 news in an hour from now president obama will head from charlotte, north carolina to the battleground states of new hampshire and then on to iowa. last night's president formerly accepted the democratic nomination. his speech was rousing but more importantly forward looking. topics include the war on terror, medicare, alternative

energies and middle class tax cuts. >> if you believe in a country where everyone gets a fair shot and everyone does their fair share and everyone plays by the same rules, then i need you to vote this november. >> goals include recruiting 100,000 math and science teachers, cutting tuition growth in half and trimming the deficit by $4 trillion in the next ten years. he adds mitt romney is not ready for the pressures of the white house. >> they relate to us on a personal level. i feel like they can really relate to my life, my struggles, my dreams. >> the san francisco democratic party held a watch party at the labor union hall in the mission district. big names in attendance included former san francisco mayor willie brown. our time is 6:08. the obama administration received disappointing news a half hour ago. as we told you earlier the new unemployment report came out. not as good as they expected. coming up at 6:14 we will take

a close look at those numbers. whether also tell you the industry that took a major hit. >> yeah i'm keeping an eye on stocks too. let's check in with tara who is covering for sal this morning. how is traffic? >> we have an accident in contra costa county. we just got this over the wire. highway 4 westbound at lone tree way. the north onramp. an ambulance is responding. it does appear to be an injury accident. highway 4 westbound. now we want to go to our maps and show you here two lanes blocked. north 101 at caesar chavez street. we got off the phone with ch. they confirmed it was their incident. it appears there was some sort of a pursuit. the off ramp was shut down for some time. it's just reopened. we can see there is slow down there. we will keep you posted if we find out anymore information. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza shows the backup there.

fast track lanes are moving but if you have the cash only lanes you will be sitting in it for a little bit there. it looks like a 5-10 minute wait in san francisco. finally 237 in milpitas you can see traffic the brake lights up there westbound as you make your way toward sunnyvale no major delays. let's check in with steve. last couple mornings we had a couple tropical clouds. still a couple of showers developed yesterday this time yesterday morning. san jose morning was dealing with some and later in the afternoon. most of that stayed most of it being clouds. today there is some fog out there. i will tell you it's mostly hanging on around the point rays area north toward sonoma county and into sonoma county. cool conditions for some but mild for others. it will be mostly sunny today. there will be a few high clouds around. 60s and 70 ann 80s. parts of the coast may come up a little bit. i'm seeing a west wind from

every location. west, southwest at hay ward. west at oakland. everybody has little sea breeze there. 49 your morning trifecta here. santa rosa and napa all in at 49. lows mainly in the 50s here. little low right there will develop and sweep in over the weekend which will bring us a cooler pattern. mostly clear. patchy fog. but a little bit less we saw the last couple mornings. looks like a cooling trend will take us into the weekend. fog, sun, mostly sunny. nice coast and bay. unless you are stuck on some of the fog. 60s and 70 ann -- and 80s. 84 concord. 86 pleasanton. 70 oakland. 80 in martinez. low 80s saratoga. 70s on the peninsula. 74 san mateo. still 60s on the coast. even with the sun there is a sea breeze in place. fog will be increasing over the weekend with a cooling trend. little bump up monday and

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time is 6:14. a maryland state trooper is still recovering after he was almost killed during a traffic stop. boy that is what happened back in june when a truck driver slammed into state trooper david. he made it to the railing before collapsing. ceps that accident he has under gone physical therapy for his shoulder, back, and leg. doctors are not sure when he can return back to work. the obama administration has decided to blacklist a dangerous terrorist group. that is according to the new york times that received information from several american officials late last night. the haqqani network is responsible for some of the

deadly attacks on u.s. troops in afghanistan. official announcement could come as early as today. the deadline for a decision is sunday. time now 6:15. just about 45 minutes ago the labor department released the latest unemployment report. ktvu alison burns is live in our washington d.c. bureau with a look at the numbers. alison. >> reporter: economists were expecting about $130,000 jobs added last month. here's the story this morning from the labor department. just 96,000 jobs were added. the unemployment rate drops to 8 .1% from 8.3% in july. but that is only because they gave up looking for work. as for who's hiring and who is not, business and professional services added 27,000 jobs. 17,000 jobs were added in health care. but this is going to be a big disappointment manufacturing

took a hit losing 15,000 jobs. the head of the republican national committee this morning called this report devastating. these numbers will drive the debate on the campaign trail for the presidential candidates today. more on that during our next update. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:16. the pleasanton school district is making changes to its lunch menu. in fact, starting monday the schools will be observing meatless mondays. which means students will be eating things like humus and grapes instead of meat. that is designed to teach kids about the healthy benefits of eating more meat free and meat free options. pleasanton is only the second bay area school district to start a meatless monday lunch plan. just about 15 minutes from right now the opening ceremonies start to kick off the susan g. komen three-day walk. in fact, this is a live picture. you can see people starting to arrive for the event.

it kicks off at 6:30. got a lot of people out there. officials say registration actually is down. about 50% from last year. local donations are also down more than 30%. now there are many people who decided to boycott this year's walk. this follows after the organization's very controversial decision earlier this year that they will stop funding planned parenthood. 6:17 is the time right now. let's check back in on the morning commute. >> we do have an accident that just came down 80 westbound at pinole valley road at the off ramp there. an ambulance is on the way. be aware of that. let's take a look at our maps. we want to show you a couple incidents here. one in san jose. we have a left lane block here due to an accident on guadalupe parkway north of santa clara street. and just this side of mountain view we have a disabled car on the shoulder. this has just been moved over.

101 southbound at university avenue. it seems to cause a little delay there. up next we have a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see some folks are going right on through the gates there but they have fast track and all the other ones. it looks like a ten minute wait. give yourself extra time. up next we have a look at the san mateo bridge. you can see traffic there the headlines. 6:18 here is steve. on this friday we have mostly clear skies. a couple high clouds. far cry from anything we had the last couple of days. some fog. few of the high you are clouds will drift in but overall a little less coverage. a little low right off the pacific northwest is going to set up and move in here over the weekend. today the coast might warm up just a wee bit. just by the fact that from about san francisco south it's mostly fog free.

70 ann 80s inland -- 70s and 80s inland. there is a definitely westerly direction. so it's there. 40s upper 40s. 50s everywhere else. running a little cooler this morning than we had the last couple mornings. lost a lot of that cloud deck. there is the low. you can see the signature on it. it will begin to move. so mostly sunny today. patchy fog. it does appear to see cooler weather settling into sunday. temperatures will warm up earlier this week. fog, sun mild to warm. nice by the coast. 60s and 70s and 80s. a few upper 80s. yesterday was one of the warmest days. about the same today. a cooling trend. august another month of disdeclining sales for the video game industry. we saw a 39% drop off in sales.

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. time now 6:24. the man behind the bomb hoax has been cleared of any wrong doing there but was arrested after arriving in texas. police arrested on him on unrelated outstanding warrants. he was taken off a plane after a caller recorded a passenger was armed with explosively

kids. they believe his exgirlfriend's current boyfriend was behind the call. he is now facing federal charges. golden gate transit could adopt a new advertising policy. the board of directors may vote to formerly adopt the policy today. for years the agency has used an informal set of guidelines when deciding whether to accept certain advertisements but lately controversial ads has sparked some controversy. time now just about 6:25. giving the gift of life gave some comfort to an oakland family. john and tamara lost their police officer son when he was shot in the line of duty. now while he was on lift support his parent's found out he was an organ donor. though they have not met the recipient of his son's heart

they found out it was a perfect fit and john would be pleased. >> the people closest to john found out they were peteing sort of the continuation. which i thought was really great. >> they were comforted how knowing friends and relatives signed up as donors after that day. a rabid bat has been found at a bay area lake. the discovery was made monday near fairfax. the bat was found near the parking lot was taken to experts in san rafael and lab tests confirmed that the bat did have rabies. if you think your dog may have touched the bat, please call the humane society. one southern california fisherman got more than he bargained for when he reeled in his line. he was surprised to see a great white shark. he was surfing off the pier in manhattan beach. this is the second time it has

right on time. there is the opening bell live in new york this morning where it's going to be a pretty interesting day. the u.s. jobs report coming out just exactly an hour ago. and it is disappointing fewer jobs created than expected. also the unemployment rate down which first look people might think that is good news but really analysts are saying it's because a lot of people have just stopped looking for work. they are not counted in that number. there is one bright spot. you can see on the lower part

of your screen. markets are down. not a lot though. there is one bright shot people are talking about this may force the fed to take some sort of action. so we'll keep watching the numbers for you and have all the business news coming up. we will smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning news. it is a friday september 7th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. police in south san francisco are busy. they are searching for a man suspected of kidnapping his two children and escaping on a stolen yacht. ktvu claudine wong is live in south san francisco to tell us who they are looking for. claudine. >> reporter: i just talked to the mother of devin and brooklyn the two children that were abducted. she says she is just trying to stay strong. she just hopes her children will come home soon. i want to show you a picture of the two children. this is two-year-old devin and his three-year-old sister

brooklyn. the mom says the two were with their grandmother in south san francisco. she was at the courthouse trying to get a restraining order and that is when their father came by. this is a picture of their father christopher maffei. she and maffei were not in a relationship but she was granting them visitation with the kids that is until monday when she told him without a job and no place to live he shouldn't see the kids anymore. >> monday is when i told him. >> reporter: how did he react? >> he was upset with me. he said he had rights to see the children. and they need to see their father. what i was doing was a crime. he was going to charge me with a felony. he was going to call cps on me. i told him you do what you need to do. >> reporter: so it did get a little -- >> yeah it got ugly at the point. he was calling me. i refused to take his phone calls. >> reporter: police believe he took the children the very next day. throwing them into a rental car

overnight news a man was shot in oakland during an attempted carjacking. police say the man called for help from 64th and mccarthur about 8:00 last night. told police he was shot in the hand when he grabbed the carjackers gun. now another oakland shooting turned deadly. police are searching for two men that followed an alleged drug dealer to his house. tried to rob him and shot and killed him. new developments in that hantavirus outbreak in yosemite national park. park officials say as many as 22,000 people may have been exposed to the virus. that is more than double the number they had said before. the warning comes after a third person has died from the disease. he was visiting from west virginia and had stayed in a tent cabin in mid june. there is now also a warning for people that dayed at the parks more remote high sierra camps. two wild fires burning continue to threaten more than

two dozen homes this morning. now the fires are burning near the town of williams. they have burned nearly 10,000 acres. they will r only 20 -- they are only 20% contained. indian reservation has been evacwaited -- evacuated. the biggest concern the flames could move over a ridge and closer to those homes. firefighters continue to make progress on that wild fire burning in southern california. so far it has burned nearly 4200 acres. it is 69% contained. four people including two firefighters received minor injuries. time now 6:35. cadaver dogs now helping in the search for a 20-year-old lafayette man missing along the sacramento river. his name is brett olson. he's a student at cal polly. he was last seen sunday at a

a.m.. reporting live from san jose janine de la vega. our time is 6:37. last night at the democratic national convention president obama energized thousands of supporters with a big speech. however thousands more feel they were left high and dry. they expected to be inside watching the president's acceptance speech. instead they say they were locked out. coming up we'll tell you why. today the president as well as mitt romney -- campaign stops in new hampshire and iowa. mitt romney also campaigning in those two battleground states. moments ago mitt romney released a statement saying the newest jobs report shows according to him president obama's economic policies have not worked. collin jones the first african american world record swimmer will hold free swimming

me this was her grandson and her grandson's pregnant girlfriend who were killed last night. they were found inside this home. that same relative tells me the victim's two-year-old son was also inside this house at the time. that information police are not confirming. neighbors reported gunfire coming from this house around 9:00 last night at this point police haven't identified the victim's only saying they were 31-year-old man and a 28-year- old woman. sergeant on scene tells me investigators at this point don't have a clear motive for the killings. they are still trying to work on that. i talked with friends of the couple who are struggling to understand what happened. >> i don't know what happened. i will grieve for the family. that's all i can say. i know where i stood. i love him to death. >> it doesn't appear it would be a random act. add this time -- at this time. we know there were two i believe black males that were

operating within fcc guidelines. that tower is in hayward which at & t says is too far away to cause any blackouts. today the federal communications commission is expected to grant the wishes of the silicon valley heavy weight such as google and intel. they will propose to auction off television airways which will create faster network systems. it could raise billions of dollars for the government. the auction could happen in 2014. they have been lobbying the white house and congress for years. time now 6:48. problem for tickets upset some people who thought they would be able to get to see president obama's speech last night. hundreds of ticketholders were left stranded outside the arena because officials closed the door. saying they had reached capacity. the fire marshal locked them out. this is the second ticket related let down this week. they announced the speech was being moved from a large
