a sailboat. the search has picked up for two children taken by their father on tuesday from san francisco. the three are now on a stolen yacht. the trio has been spotted in the ocean and the coast guard is moving in. >> reporter: the very latest at this hour is that the coast guard has spotted this boat and are hovering above it. it is 48 nautical miles from santa cruz but they have not made contact yet. there are several boats involved in this operation and police say they have one goal right now: getting those children back safely. >> our primary concern is the safety of the children and getting them off the vessel without harm. the coast guard is very well trained in contacting people on vessels. i'm sure they will take the

safest approach to have a peaceful resolution to this. >> reporter: the 43-year-old and his three young children are on the boat. >> they love their dad. i'm hoping by the grace of god that he's not going to harm them in any way. >> reporter: this home video shows them enjoying a summer day. but things got ugly monday when she told him he couldn't see them anymore till he had a job and place to live. the next day while she was getting a restraining order, he came to the home and kidnapped the children. their 71-year-old grandmother was hurt trying to stop him but he got away. he then went to alameda and stole a boat from the marina. he was spotted wednesday morning, then again at 4:00

this morning by a commercial fisherman who actually talked to him. according to to coast guard, he tried to buy fuel from him but the fisherman refused. >> we were able to get a photograph to the commercial vessel and he confirmed that the person he saw on the boat was christopher and he did see a small child on the vessel. >> reporter: the latest, the coast guard is above the boat and detectives here are on their way now to work with the coast guard. coast guard vessels are also making their way out there. this could be a long operation. now to developing news where a little more than an hour ago an suv crashed into a tj maxx store.

you can see the ambulance at the scene thorn and fire trucks. we are told the driver was not seriously hurt but a bystander who jumped out of the way of the suv complained of minor leg and back pain. that person was taken to the hospital. so far no word on what caused the accident. police are trying to piece together evidence to figure out what led to a double homicide. the bodies of a man and woman were found shot to death after 9:15 last night inside their home. neighbors called police after hearing gunshots. officers were at the scene overnight and into this morning looking for evidence. family members of one of the victims says the 28-year-old woman was killed while she was pregnant with twins. a 2 and a half-year-old boy was also in the home but not hurt. police are looking for two suspects seen running from the house. >> doesn't appear that it would

be a random act. at this time we know there were two i believe black males that were seen leaving the scene dressed in black hooded sweatshirts. >> police say the victims were in a relationship and investigators have not yet determined a motive for the killings. detectives say they are searching for two men who followed and alleged drug dealer to his home at 105th and beverly, try today rob him, then shot and killed him. also in oakland, a man was carjacked and called for help around 8:00 last night. he told officers she was shot in the

two wildfires are continuing to threaten more than two dozen homes, burning near the town of williams. they have burned nearly 10,000 acres and are only 20% contained. one indian reservation in the area has been evacuated. the biggest concern for crews today is that the flames could move over a ridge and closer to home. a wildfire in the angeles national forest has burned nearly 4200 acres and is 69% contained. the fire broke out sunday afternoon, forcing evacuation of homes and four people received minor injuries. cadaver dogs have joined in the search for a 20-year-old lafayette man missing along the beer can beach during a weekend

float down the river. a $5,000 reward is being offered for his safe return. hundreds of undocumented immigrants are signing up for a new federal program that may enable some of them to remain in the u.s. legally. one young man has lived nearly his entire life in san jose and is hoping to say. >> reporter: these people hoped they were taking a step closer to staying in the u.s. even with a diploma, getting a job is difficult because he is undocumented. he's taking advantage of a workshop to apply for temporary legal status under the president's deferred action program. >> time has gone by and getting older. >> reporter: many undocumented

immigrants can qualify by proving they came before they were 16, in school graduated or served in the military. at the workshop, they have to make sure they have all the proper documents with immigration. gomez is grateful because he has goals. >> i'm enrolled in a computer technician and i want to get my associates so i can do something with myself. >> reporter: free workshops every fried are offered here for the next month. the democratic national convention ended in charlotte, north carolina. despite the jobs numbers we reported earlier, the president is hoping for a postconvention bounce in the polls.

there is surprising news from a surprising study out that raises the red flag about mammograms. european doctors found the breast cancer screening procedure may actually raise the risk of the disease in women under 30. the concern is that the radiation may be harmful to women who carry the cancer- causing gene. researchers say a safer screening method is mri. and the susan g komen three-day walk had opening ceremonies this morning. in addition to the walk, there is also a 5k walk in san francisco on sunday. registration for the walk is down by 50% compared to lastier and donations to the san francisco public chapter are down 65%. it's seen as backlash after the refusal nine months ago for
