and you can follow us on twitter on any new developments on this story. authorities have issued a statewide amber alert for two children who were abducted in monterey county today. 7-month-old onica edwards and 6- year-old enrique joseph were taken just before noon by marcus edwards. edwards is described as african american, 6'3" and has a tattoo on his upper right arm. they are believed to be in a buick century. two other children who were abducted by their father are in a sailboat he stole from a marina. the coast guard says it is tracking that boat. patti lee has the story. >> reporter: i was on the phone with the coast guard of san

francisco and they have confirmed that sailboat was spotted late this afternoon. but right now they can't confirm whether or not that stolen boat is headed to the harbor in monday -- monterey or the one here in santa cruz. christopher maffei abducted his o -- abducted his children. >> i am hoping by the grace of god that he is not going to harm them in any way. >> reporter: mother, jennifer hippen says the children were taken as she was trying to get a restraining order. >> i had my mother watch them. he was very upset with me because i told him i didn't want him to be around the kids

while he was not employed. >> reporter: the sailing school where maffei was certified in navigation say maffei reserved a boat but never showed up. the owner of a sailing school confirms maffei was a student there and has been chartering boats since 2006. >> technically i would say yes, he would have at least the minimum certifications required. >> reporter: the concern that maffei had little or no expertize in open ocean where even expert sailers can run into trouble. right now the coast guard is gathering at the coast in monterey. they're maintaining mom on the details of this operation. we will have the latest on this rescue operation tonight on the channel 2 news at 10:00. patti lee. the teenage driver accused of a fatal crash in concord is

now expected to plead guilty to vehicle manslaughter charges. the 17-year-old is accused of hitting and killing 9-year-old hadesa nuri and her father. today the teen's lawyer requested that a judge set a change of plea hearing which was granted and set for september 26th. the teenager could be sentenced to jail until he is 21 years old. el cerrito police are looking for two men who robbed a suspect on a jogging trail. one of the men had a gun and demanded the victim's wallet. one suspect is described as african american, 25 years old, 6'tall with a thin build. the second suspect is described as latino, 6'tall also with a thin build. a union protest could

disrupt a popular friday night event at the de young museum. a -- >> reporter: i'm standing inside the de young museum. where you can see dozens of members of local 1021 chanting right now. they are here over a nearly yearlong contract dispute involving 94 museum workers here at the de young museum and the legion of honors. now this is a weekly friday night event and this time it has brought out dozens of union members clad in purpleout fits to disrupt this event. what we understand is there's going to be speakers inside the museum shortly including a number of san francisco supervisors. they will then call on folks who are willing to be arrested to protest these ongoing contract talks. we understand that they are going to sit down in front of the main entrance doors here at

the museum and block the door way. we understand there's about 16 people members of the union who volunteered to do this. contract talks broke off last night. the museum operators tell us they expect talks will resume next week. but for now the union organizers out here plan to shut down this event tonight. and you can see that this is going to go on for a bit in the evening and raise a lot of noise. we'll be covering it through the evening and bring a full report coming up tonight on the 10:00 news. for now reporting live at the de young museum. david christianson. senator young leno called for an audit of the refinery safety inspection process. the audit now goes to the joint legislative audit committee. governor brown signed a

bill aimed at preventing violence at sporting events. the act will -- the idea is to get help more quickly to defuse a potentially violent situation. right now republican vice presidential candidate paul ryan is in contra costa county at a fundraiser. tonight's private dinner is in a gated home. tomorrow morning ryan is scheduled to attend a breakfast fundraiser at the home in danville of former 49ers tight ends bryan jones. tickets to that reception start at $1,000 and go all the way up to $25,000. the san francisco district attorney's office has determined there's not enough evidence to file criminal charges against arch way property services. a contributor to ed lee's mayoral campaign. the company was accused of

laundering $45,000 in contributions. a separate case against another contributor go lawry's is still ongoing. that airport shuttle company was charged with making illegal contributions to ed lee's campaign. new labor department figures show slightly weaker than expected job growth in august. the unemployment rate did fall from 8.3% in july to 8.1% in august. but analysts say that's because eligible workers gave up looking for a job. and the jobs that were added were in lower paying industries such as retail, hotels and restaurants. slumping sales prompted intel to scale back its fourth quarter revenue forecast. intel chips go into 80% of personal computers. today's announcements sent shares down to close at 24

the bodies of two missing men were found in indianapolis. they were found on august 22nd in a wooded area of indianapolis. investigators say both men had suffered head trauma. the person who discovered the shallow grave said there were also several hundred dollars near by. the family says the woman was pregnant with twins. the bodies were found inside their home on aferton streets. their 2-year-old son was in the house but was not hurt. family and friends identify the man as deshon asai and they said he was trying to take care

of his growing family. >> i love him to death. my kids loved him. he was a good person as far as we know. and i don't know what happened and i just, i grieve for the family. >> reporter: no arrests have been made, two men were seen running from the house moments after the shootings. one of the men shot by vallejo police officers early this week spoke to ktvu exclusively today from his hospital bed about what happened just moments before police opened fire. 21-year-old joe johnson has a bullet lodged in his lower back. his friend mario romero was killed. officers say romero got out of the car with a gun in his waistband. but johnson says both men had his hands up when officers fired. >> mario never got out of the car. mario never had no gun. there was nothing in the car, man. >> reporter: police would not discuss the case with us today. but vallejo's police chief has talked to us twice this week

>> very disaappointmented. where's the justice for our son. he was murdered. two politicians got away with it. a neighborhood fight is gathering stripes in the oakland neighborhood of rock ridge where residents are resisting plans to expand a local safeway store. allie rasmus has the story. >> reporter: for residents in this neighborhood their big concern is with the traffic. this new safeway would replace the old one. and critics of the plan say their big concern is the congestion. if we pan off to the west you can see it's pretty backed up right now. critics of the plan say this street can't support 60,000 square feet of retail space on

the lot right next to it. >> ask rock ridge residents what they think about the safeway, and many admit this grocery store looks a little dated. >> there's no doubt the facility could use some sprucing up i guess. >> reporter: but some of those same residents tell us they're not thrilled about plans to replace this store. >> we like to support small businesses that have a little more charm, a little more individuality. >> i like the idea, improving and upgrading but it's really huge. >> reporter: a two story 50,000 square foot building would replace the old safe way on this corner lot. on the outside perimeter of the building another 10,000 square foot of retail. the oakland planning commission gave the safeway project the green light. >> we were gratified out of planning commission 5-0. a unanimous vote was really you know telling about the city's support for for this project. >> reporter: but the committee planning council are opposeing

the plan. they said they're not opposed to the new safeway, they just want something smaller. >> don't build a monstrosity. if you bring it down you don't have the traffic problems anymore. >> we know our customers and we know what they want. they want a full service grocery store. >> reporter: the neighborhood store started the rock ridge legal defense fund and began accepting online donations. they are hoping to raise 50 to $70,000 to sue safeway if their appeal is denied. now it is all in the hands of oakland's city council. sometime in the next couple of months they'll have to vote on whether to go ahead with the safeway or stop it in its tracks. the two wildfires burning in calusa county continue to grow. but firefighters say they are making progress. the fires are burning along highway 16 and so far they have blackened more than 12,000 acres of wild land. officials say right now they are 20% contained. a voluntary evacuation remains

tonight. dodgers are playing the giants over at the ballpark. beautiful night for the ball game. we have a lot of outdoor activities. when you start out in the morning it's going to be a little chilly up in napa and santa rosa. most of us in the mid- and upper 50s. warmest day saturday, coolest day sunday. this high pressure center is with us big time on saturday. on sunday it weakness a little bit and this guy shows up and introduces more fog. for outdoor plans, especially in the san mateo area, san francisco i would do it on saturday. sunday there's going to be more fog. a little more wind as well. so the fog forecast sunday. burns off pretty quick and just lingers patchy at the coast. highs tomorrow are going to be as i mentioned 80s. you will get some low 80s as you get to clear lake. 67 in sausalito. 85 in danville. 79 in san jose, 89 in morgan hill and 80 in saratoga.
