burning is one acre in size and moving slowly. it is burning near power lines and a substation. there is no word on what started the fire. crews are on the scene. as soon as we get more information we will bring it to you. firefighters joined in the fight against a wildfire threatening homes near clear lake. the 4600-acre fire broke out last friday and right now is only 15% contained. 300 homes are threatened and authorities warned people to be ready to evacuate. 1300 firefighters are currently battling the flames. less than an hour ago we learned it was an off duty san francisco sheriff's deputy who turned the tables on someone who tried to rob him. ktvu's alex savage reports he shot a suspect who was armed

with a fake hand gun. >> reporter: he was shot twice this morning and taken to the hospital in stable condition. he got more than he bargained for when he tried to rob a man and woman. one of the victims was an off duty police officer. he pulled a gun and fired. . >> i heard a number of shots. not sure how many. three, four. then i heard somebody yelling down. down. and the police were here within seconds. >> this happened before 2:00 a.m. on lee street. the off-duty officer and the woman just arrived home and parked their car. they went to grab something when the robber approached and demanded their valuables. police say the officer felt his life was in danger and reacted. >> striking him a few times. suspect is in a hospital.

>> reporter: the robber who was shot was involved in two other hold ups earlier in the night in this same area of oakland. neighbors are thankful things ended the way they did. >> i think it is better what happened than the other way around and maybe the neighborhood will calm down and go back to normal. >> reporter: as it turns out police now say that robber was armed with a fake hand gun. he will be facing armed robbery charges once he recovers. the police officer was not hurt during the shooting and neither was the woman. in oakland, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. police are looking for a wanted parolee who allude arrest despite being cornered by s.w.a.t. team. they saw him run into a house last night. they surrounded the house and called in a s.w.a.t. team. he is a known gang member who lives in the house with his parents. the s.w.a.t.

team used tear gas to force him out. when they entered the house he was nowhere to be found. only the parents were inside. >> they said he was here and they saw him run outside. >> no. no. i don't think so, no inasmuch -- no, no. >> police believe he may have crawled up into the attic and jumped from the roof. a neighbor reported seeing a man jumping over the fence. and in the south bay a community is mourning the loss of a store clerk shot and killed. coming up, what is located a quarter mile from the store and why that shows the person is daring and not afraid. the body of a california highway patrol was given a hero's escort today. they took his body from martinez to a mortuary.

turning now to our coverage of the chevron refinery fire last month. ktvu's rob roth tells us about all the investigations going on along with special meeting today. rob? >> reporter: 5 separate investigations are going on here that chevron refinery and much of the focus is on improving what some call a substandard air pollution monitoring system. >> reporter: they called a special meeting to discuss last month's fire at the chevron refinery and its after math. the fire sent 15,000 residents to hospitals, most with respiratory problems even

though they said the samples were safe. >> the community want to see more air monitoring so the public can understand what is in the air. >> reporter: they also hope to establish a better community alert system and perhaps use a weather balloon to catch samples high in the atmosphere. >> we always reviewing efforts to improve air quality and imform the public. >> we -- inform the public. >> we may get what we should have had. >> reporter: the epa, cal-osha, and chevron are investigating along with the federal chemical safety board. one area of concern? >> looking at the issue of the operation of the unit. from the time the leak was discovered till the fire erupted, approximately 2-1/2 hours. >> reporter: these investigations could take six

has the community worried. >> reporter: she brought flowers to pay tribute to a 7- eleven store clerk in a robbery saturday morning around 2:00 a.m. >> the guy just -- you know, he is elderly. i don't understand why somebody would have to take his life. take the money and go. >> reporter: police say investigators are following possible lead and are not releasing many details on the case. they pointed out the crime took place close to the police department. >> yes, quarter mile down the street from the police department. shows you the criminal -- the criminal in this case is brazen and, you know, not very afraid. >> reporter: some people in the neighborhood were rattled by the killing. >> i am scared, you know, i feel bad for the feel who died inside the store because the people working there, they are very nice. >> reporter: some say police should have issued a

neighborhood alert. >> i don't understand why we haven't been communicated with so we could be safe. >> several of the detectives have dropped what they are doing and are committed of trying to find them to bring them to justice. >> reporter: earlier today we talked to the family who are devastated. live, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a 75-year-old man was shot and wounded yesterday morning while walking in san francisco. police say the man was near newhall street. his wound is not life threatening. police are looking for three men in their 20s. busy weekend for the coast card. they rescued six people in one day and one of the rescues was like anything they have

attempted before. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in san francisco, crew members said they had no time to spare? >> reporter: they say a device like this meant the difference between life and death for a father and son who crashed their plane into the ocean. >> reporter: a coast card rescue swimmer and a man cling to a cable hoisting them out of choppy water. this is video of the rescue. >> waves put us under water and when we were getting hoisted a second wave hit us. >> reporter: a 70-year-old father and son were flying when their engine died. when the coast card arrived they had 12 minutes of fuel left. they knew where to find the plane thanks to this device.

they had a personal locating beacon on board. >> it sent us exactly to the position where we needed to go and we didn't have to search, spend time searching. had we spent that 12 minutes trying to find them instead of going directly to where they were, could have turned out much more different. >> reporter: this was their third rescue of the day. the first call came in at noon with a sail boat taking on water. they spotted the boat and then sped off to another rescue. a boat sunk. he spotted a fragment of the boat, two passengers were floating nearby. >> reporter: the crew on board the helicopter called in the location of the two sailers to another vessel so they were also rescued. you can say that chopper is getting maintenance work now. but six people were saved yesterday by the same coast
