burning is one acre in size and moving slowly. it is burning near power lines and a substation. there is no word on what started the fire. crews are on the scene. as soon as we get more information we will bring it to you. firefighters joined in the fight against a wildfire threatening homes near clear lake. the 4600-acre fire broke out last friday and right now is only 15% contained. 300 homes are threatened and authorities warned people to be ready to evacuate. 1300 firefighters are currently battling the flames. less than an hour ago we learned it was an off duty san francisco sheriff's deputy who turned the tables on someone who tried to rob him. ktvu's alex savage reports he shot a suspect who was armed

with a fake hand gun. >> reporter: he was shot twice this morning and taken to the hospital in stable condition. he got more than he bargained for when he tried to rob a man and woman. one of the victims was an off duty police officer. he pulled a gun and fired. . >> i heard a number of shots. not sure how many. three, four. then i heard somebody yelling down. down. and the police were here within seconds. >> this happened before 2:00 a.m. on lee street. the off-duty officer and the woman just arrived home and parked their car. they went to grab something when the robber approached and demanded their valuables. police say the officer felt his life was in danger and reacted. >> striking him a few times. suspect is in a hospital.

>> reporter: the robber who was shot was involved in two other hold ups earlier in the night in this same area of oakland. neighbors are thankful things ended the way they did. >> i think it is better what happened than the other way around and maybe the neighborhood will calm down and go back to normal. >> reporter: as it turns out police now say that robber was armed with a fake hand gun. he will be facing armed robbery charges once he recovers. the police officer was not hurt during the shooting and neither was the woman. in oakland, alex savage, ktvu channel 2 news. police are looking for a wanted parolee who allude arrest despite being cornered by s.w.a.t. team. they saw him run into a house last night. they surrounded the house and called in a s.w.a.t. team. he is a known gang member who lives in the house with his parents. the s.w.a.t.

he is a father of four. family and officers escorted his casket. he was shot last week during a traffic stop. he was taken off life support wednesday. in 90 minutes, a panel will hear from the police chief a week after a fatal officer involved shooting there. he was shot to death september 2 while sitting in a car. joe johnson, a passenger was injured. police say he appeared to be reaching for a weapon. investigators say they found a fake gun and pills in the car. there have been 7 officer involved shooting shootings since january. >> the chief fire resigned today after he was sited for buying alcohol for a minor. he was caught up in a sting operation last week. he was buying alcohol for a

teenager. he was just hired in july to serve as the interim fire chief. he was a firefighter for 25 years. a memorial service is planned tomorrow night for a college student whose body was found in the scram river. the -- in the sacramento river. someone wrote his name on a hillside. brett olson's body was found yesterday. he disappeared while tubing in the sacramento river. he was a student at california polytechnic state university in san luis obispo. investigators say there is no sign of foul play. the raiders play their opener tonight at the colosseum and security will be very tight. ktvu's paul chambers will be there and tells us why going to the game will be like going through security that airport. paul?

turning now to our coverage of the chevron refinery fire last month. ktvu's rob roth tells us about all the investigations going on along with special meeting today. rob? >> reporter: 5 separate investigations are going on here that chevron refinery and much of the focus is on improving what some call a substandard air pollution monitoring system. >> reporter: they called a special meeting to discuss last month's fire at the chevron refinery and its after math. the fire sent 15,000 residents to hospitals, most with respiratory problems even

months or more. coming up at 6:00 p.m., why investigators are focusing on pipe here at the chevron refinery. reporting live, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. hewlett-packard announced a round of lof layoff -- layoffs today. hewlett-packard said it will cut 29,000 jobs by october 2014. that is up from the cuts it announces in may. they did not explain why they are eliminating more jobs. the company stock bumped up today, rising .1 to close at 17.43. on wall street the dow is down 52 to 13,254. the nasdaq is down 32 at 3,104. the s&p is down 8 at 1,429. authorities in wisconsin released video of a gun battle between police and a man who

shot and killed several people last month at a sikh temple. >> the video shows an officer shouting at him to drop his gun. authorities say he killed six people and wounded several more before turning the gun on himself. the officer who was doing the shouting was hit several times but ended up surviving. security in yemen say they killed the second in command of a al-qaeda branch. he died in a air strike along with five other people. many sources said the missile was fired from a u.s. drone. he was released to a terrorist rehabilitation program five years ago. >> authorities in mexico arrested a man with ties to

hezbollah. he was released on probation from prison in july where he was serving time for a conviction on credit card fraud charges. he was detained for violating terms of his probation. he was ordered transferred to the bay area. tomorrow is the 11th anniversary of the attacks in new york city and washington, d.c. ceremonies will be held in pennsylvania as well where one of the planes went down. today u.s. defense secretary leon panetta took a tour and stopped that wall containing the names of those who died on flight 93 which was headed to san francisco. in the bay area each of the 43 fire stations will hold memorials at 6:45 a.m. in the morning. for the first time the government is acknowledging a link between the debris at

complete bay area news coverage continues right now, this is ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00 p.m. >> there is sadness and fear in a neighborhood today. people are paying respects after a popular store clerk was dunned down during -- gunned down during a weekend robbery at a 7-eleven. ktvu's rob effort h tells us the -- robert handa tells us the latest on the investigation and how the neighborhood is reacting. >> we have seen people coming here to the 7-eleven, visiting a memorial for the clerk who was killed this weekend. i talked with police and the department identified the victim. he is the first homicide of the year, which is one reason it

has the community worried. >> reporter: she brought flowers to pay tribute to a 7- eleven store clerk in a robbery saturday morning around 2:00 a.m. >> the guy just -- you know, he is elderly. i don't understand why somebody would have to take his life. take the money and go. >> reporter: police say investigators are following possible lead and are not releasing many details on the case. they pointed out the crime took place close to the police department. >> yes, quarter mile down the street from the police department. shows you the criminal -- the criminal in this case is brazen and, you know, not very afraid. >> reporter: some people in the neighborhood were rattled by the killing. >> i am scared, you know, i feel bad for the feel who died inside the store because the people working there, they are very nice. >> reporter: some say police should have issued a

neighborhood alert. >> i don't understand why we haven't been communicated with so we could be safe. >> several of the detectives have dropped what they are doing and are committed of trying to find them to bring them to justice. >> reporter: earlier today we talked to the family who are devastated. live, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a 75-year-old man was shot and wounded yesterday morning while walking in san francisco. police say the man was near newhall street. his wound is not life threatening. police are looking for three men in their 20s. busy weekend for the coast card. they rescued six people in one day and one of the rescues was like anything they have

attempted before. ktvu's allie rasmus is live in san francisco, crew members said they had no time to spare? >> reporter: they say a device like this meant the difference between life and death for a father and son who crashed their plane into the ocean. >> reporter: a coast card rescue swimmer and a man cling to a cable hoisting them out of choppy water. this is video of the rescue. >> waves put us under water and when we were getting hoisted a second wave hit us. >> reporter: a 70-year-old father and son were flying when their engine died. when the coast card arrived they had 12 minutes of fuel left. they knew where to find the plane thanks to this device.

they had a personal locating beacon on board. >> it sent us exactly to the position where we needed to go and we didn't have to search, spend time searching. had we spent that 12 minutes trying to find them instead of going directly to where they were, could have turned out much more different. >> reporter: this was their third rescue of the day. the first call came in at noon with a sail boat taking on water. they spotted the boat and then sped off to another rescue. a boat sunk. he spotted a fragment of the boat, two passengers were floating nearby. >> reporter: the crew on board the helicopter called in the location of the two sailers to another vessel so they were also rescued. you can say that chopper is getting maintenance work now. but six people were saved yesterday by the same coast
