year for raidernation. paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. dozens of officers gave a hero's escort to a hurst carrying a body of a fellow officer. they helped move him from martinez. then family and officers escorted his casket into a mortuary. he was shot last week during a traffic stop. police made an arrest in a deadly shooting last friday. officers arrested three suspects in pittsburg in connection with the shooting. they are suspected in the shooting death of a man who was killed last friday night. so far police haven't released the suspect's name or possible

motive for the shooting. >> we know it was an off duty police officer who shot a roper in oakland this morning around 2:00 a.m. investigators say the deputy was with a friend when the suspect came up, demanded money. the deputy fired and the suspect is in stable condition that hospital. he was carrying a replica gun. a memorial at a 7-eleven where a store clerk was shot and killed over the weekend. the shooting happened early saturday morning inside the store which is located a quarter mile from the police department. >> the father who authorities say abducted his two kids and held them on a boat for days told a judge he was trying to save them from abuse. christopher maffei did not

enter a plea this afternoon. christopher maffei told the judge his children were put right back in the place where they were being abused. he is being held on half million dollars bail. regulators today were clear saying mistakes were made in alerting the public when a fire erupted inside the chevron refinery. ktvu's rob roth is live with the steps they say are being taken to protect the public. rob? >> reporter: a piece of pipe may be a key piece in determining what caused the explosion here at the chevron refinery. >> reporter: investigators are looking at a 8-foot section of pipe. >> working with cal-osha and we expect it to be delivered to a lab today. >> reporter: officials described the pipe as thin but wouldn't say what caused the condition. they said what they will look

for. >> thickness measurements taken, did they have a good program, using industry standers. >> reporter: they called a special meeting with officials investigating the explosion. >> not just about corroding pipe, about the maintenance, when you replace equipment. >> reporter: they are also focused on failures in the alert system warning the public and wants chevron to pay to upgrade the system. we are also reviewing efforts to improve the data. the plume sent 17,000 people to the hospital. the reports at the time were the air quality was within standards. >> the community and the air district want to see more monitoring so the public can understand what is in the air. >> we may get what we should

have had. so, you know, it shouldn't be that way. >> reporter: the investigations could take six months to complete, maybe longer. an official told us chevron will face a fine, probably in the tens of thousands of dollars. rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. the department of agricultural said it resumed buying meet from a slaughterhouse that was accused of animal cruelty. a video showed workers kicking down cattle in an attempt to heard them to slaughter. last week officials said there was no evidence that sick cattle were getting into the food supply and the usda said the company improved over sight. rescuers saved six people in three separate incidents off the coast in one day. the first call came in at noon when a sail boat was taking on

water and then a sail boat was sinking. they sent a boat to pull two people to safety. and in a third rescue they found a small plane thanks to the plane's tracking device. video from the coast guard. you can see the rescuer tethered to the rope, hoisting up a father and his son. their plane went down after the engine quit. judge reinvited child visitation rights for former alameda county supervisor nadia lockyer. nadia lockyer pleaded not guilty to drug and child endangerment charges after police found methamphetamine at her home. the decision today allows her visitation if her husband agrees nadia lockyer is the wife of california treasurer bill lockyer. california must make

changes in education to address a shortage of teachers. the task force says california has focused too much on test scores and recommends teachers earn an additional credential. the president of the california teachers association says it is also time to look outside the classroom for solutions. >> one of the things the document points out is the solution sets are comprehensive and it will take more than just the teachers. it will take the community coming together to tackle this program. >> the report is the first in a generation and takes stock of what it will take to produce a world class teaching force. and three schools topped the list for highest rates of

bicyclist on to the grounds and hit the rider with his car. he is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, hit-and-run, making criminal threats against the victim and driving on a suspended license. he is free on $1 million bail. a judge in southern california today refused to rule on a request to resume executions in california. executions have been on hold for years while courts look into the legality of the drugs used. they are asking for them to move ahead with a single drug protocol but the judge said he didn't have jurisdiction to grant that order. a hearing is set for october. supporters of the yes, on proposition 34 campaign are praising the ruling from california saying it proves the death penalty is broken beyond

repair. instead of trying to resume execions they should be working on preventing crime. it on the november ballot and would replace the death penalty with life in prison. parents who place children in private schools are more likely to opt out of vaccinatation -- vaccinations. ktvu's christien kafton has more. >> reporter: here at greenwood the school's director says because so many people opt out doesn't mean they received any immunizization and they say it is -- immunization and they say it is a safe place. >> reporter: 79% of families opted out. she says the school has no

place for a private family decision and insists the school is safe. >> there are protocols in mace for anyone who gets ill. >> reporter: a study shows opt out rates are climbing, up 10% over last year. but she says it doesn't mean not getting your child immunized. >> i never planned on not doing it at all. i believe in immunizations, i don't believe in doing it so early or all at once. >> reporter: he says the last measles outbreak was in a private school with unvaccinated children. >> you are making decisions for
