traffic. steve is here. he's got the weather thing under control. >> i hope so. a lot of fog out there. it just means very similar to what we had the last couple of days. far enough inland it's hot. 60s and 70s around the bay. 80s inrabid. maybe a little cooler for some inland areas. we'll talk about that in the upcoming weekend coming up. here is sal. good morning, steve. that traffic looks good heading up to the high-rise with no major problems. also the morning commute is looking good if you are driving on northbound 280 getting up to highway 17. it's 6:01. let's go back to the desk. we have developing news coming in now from overseas. the interim president of libya has apologized to the united states for the attack that killed the american ambassador and a bay area native chris stevens. this is his picture. stevens is one of four americans killed in a rocket attack at the u.s. embassy in benghazi. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. bureau now to

tell us what happened and what sparked the violence. >> reporter: at this hour it's unclear who is responsible for the attack that killed ambassador chris stevens. stevens and three other americans were killed on a rocket strike on the american consulate. their deaths came as protestors allegedly angry about an online film that is offensive to islam attacked u.s. compounds in libya and egypt. pictures from the scene are airing on cnn. a former pentagon spokesperson is suggesting the attacks might have been coordinated and linked to the 9/11 anniversary. the jib january government is condemning the attacks. stanes -- president obama is calling him a courageous representative of the united

states. secretary of state hillary clinton say there is is profound sadness over his death. alison burns ktvu channel 2 morning news. >> protestors climbed the embassy walls, they ripped down the american flag, and replaced it with an islamic banner. the embassy staff had already been evacuated ahead of that protest. dramatic rescue at an overnight apartment fire in alameda. it started at about 1:00 this morning. the two story four unit building on pacific avenue you can see on fire. firefighters still at the scene this morning to make sure there are no flairups. when crews first arrived they saw the flames shooting from the roof of that apartment building and it took firefighters just about a half an hour to bring that fire under control but one firefighter had to race into the building to rescue a person in a wheelchair. >> captain was carrying that person out of the building and as we went in, there was

additional people coming out and telling us that additional people might be trapped. >> no one was injured in that fire but also 15 tenants were burned out of their homes. red cross helped them find shelter for the night. in the next half hour we will go to the scene for a live report. new this morning burglaries are up in palo alto and police say homeowners are making themselves easy targets. ktvu channel 2 reporter lorraine blanco has more on what people are still not doing to keep themselves safe. >> reporter: very simple. it seems people are not locking their doors and window and that is a major problem. you can see the rise in burglaries here making the front page of the local paper. it reads a 65% jump in burglaries. now that refers to the statistics you see on the graph. on the far right you can see a record number of burglaries this year from january to

september 10th palo alto had 151 burglaries. that is a sharp increase from last year. the police department also released this map of the area showing a concentration in the crescent park neighborhood. in august thieves hit four homes in that area represented by the dots. just in september another two homes have been burglarized. palo alto police are reminding people to lock those doors and windows as well as those side gates if -- of course they are reminding people out here besides locking the doors and windows but reporting suspicious behavior. reporting live lorraine blanco. ktvu channel 2 news. time is now 6:50 -- 6:05. thousands of people pay attribute to brett olson who drowned on the sacramento

we'll probably carry that into friday maybe saturday. sunday does look cooler. in fact, there is no extreme one way or another. i don't see any offshore breeze. thunderstorms continue to pop up over the sierra, nevada. you can see some of those right there. warp air aloft -- warm air aloft. there is a cap on it. there is a lot of fog to go around. usually this time of year we say goodbye to the fog. that is not happening yesterday. 50s on the temps. west, southwest 16 slightly stronger delta breeze. not much. sfo is calm. there is a component of a west, or northwest breeze for everybody. still a lot of tropical moisture here. high pressure building up here. we are caught between. it just means what you see is what you get. last couple of days really quiet pattern. but really temperatures inland. if you are well away it's hot.

investigating a shooting where two men were hurt. witnesses told police shots were fired in a parking lot after several men got into fight. it happened near sycamore drive near 7:00 last night. one victim a 31-year-old man was found on nearby lemon tree way. police found a second victim a 24-year-old man after searching some of the local hospitals. antioch police department may soon get some much needed staffing help. the contra costa times reports later this month city officials will consider funding more positions. several nonsworn community service officers could be hired to help out with bookings, with fingerprinting, and with transporting jail inmates. the city also wants to increase the number of sworn officers reportedly they are in the process of filling 13 jobs. family and friends are remembering a college student from the bay area who drowned on the sacramento river. >> we are utterly grief

stricken at the loss of my dear sweet boy brett. >> at least 1,000 people attended a solemn memorial last night for brett olson. he had been missing for a week after going tubing down the river over the labor day weekend. >> i'm just shocked about this whole thing. about how this played out. i know i was really positive. everyone was really positive about trying to find him. >> brett olson was a student at cal polly. he graduated from acalanes high school in 2010. more than 93,000 people joined a facebook page commemorating his life. many investors expect the federal reserve to announce a third round of bond purchases. that action could spur borrowing and spending. investors say the fed will likely feel compelled to act

buzz the u.s. economy is growing too slowly. the unemployment rate has topped 8% every month since the recession ended more than three years ago. members of congress could help home to campaign as soon as this month. despite not having reached an agreement on a deficit reduction plan. many congressional insiders believe lawmakers will leave town no later than friday september 21st. the house has not adjourned since september 30th. congress has until the end of the year to agree on a 109 billion deficit reduction or automatic spending cuts will begin to take effect. time now 6:16. election news the race for the white house is back on after that brief pause marking the anniversary of september 11th. president obama today travels to nevada. now among other things he is expected to accuse mitt romney his republican opponent and vice presidential candidate paul ryan of not telling voters of their plan to pay for tax

cuts for the wealthy. mitt romney will be speaking at his campaign office in jacksonville about how the nation's debt is hurting job creation and growth. both of the vice presidential candidates will be in ohio. for the first time in almost a week, the oakland a's star pitcher brandon mccarthy is home, resting after being hit in the head with a baseball. remember that? mccarthy was released from a san francisco hospital yesterday. that terrifying incident happened one week ago. now mccarthy had emergency brain surgery. that relieved the swelling the following day. after being released from the hospital he released a statement. he thanked his teammates and all the fans for their warm wishes. he says it's times like these he realizes he's lucky to have an extended family. there is concern the sacramento kings could move to seattle. the kings future in sacramento is in doubt after the owner scrapped a deal to build a new

duntown arena. the city of seattle has unvailed a plan to build a new basketball arena and hockey. they are complaining now about what they call a lack of dedicated traffic officers following that deadly accident in walnut creek. the walnut creek police association says one of four regular traffic enforcement officers is retiring at the end of the week. the three others will be reassigned to regular patrols because of staffing shortages. you recall a woman was killed when a pickup truck drove on to the sidewalk in front of walnut creek's marriott hotel on saturday hitting several pedestrians. 6:18 is the time. time to check back in with sal for the commute. how does it look? >> it looks pretty good pam and dave. right now we are doing pretty well in many areas. let's go outside i want to show you some pictures here of what is going on. highway 4 bay point doesn't

look all that bad. you will see slow traffic in antioch. here in bay point it's crowded but not stop and go. if you are driving to the bay bridge toll plaza we are getting a little bit of a backup. the metering lights are turned on. also the morning commute on the peninsula looks pretty good if you are driving on 101 or 285. northbound 101 continues to look good all the way up to the airport and beyond that into san francisco. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. for some it's already clear and for others there is a lot of low clouds around. bigger fog bank along the coast. slightly stronger sea breeze. nothing too outrageous. i've seen gusts 20. thunderstorms continue to pop up over the sierra. temperatures really kind of stop. if anything they might come down a degree or two. on shore breeze is in place.

temperature goose from anywhere from 60 to low and mid 90s. 50s. 52-59. everyone is stuck here. west, southwest 16. saw gusts to 20. there is a westerly component. most locations are less than 5 miles an hour. big system building up to almost toward alaska. going to drive a very strong system in the middle of the country. for us it means high pressure is here. coastal clouds in place. slightly cooler for some. very similar to yesterday. there are signs inland temps will warm up as we head toward thursday, friday, maybe into saturday. i think that fog sticks right there by the coast. very quiet pattern. a little breezy at times. fog, sun nice. 60s and 70s for those that have the low overcast. a little warmer away from the coast. thursday, friday, maybe into saturday but it looks like another cool down kicks back in for sunday. coming up next.

welcome back. time now 6:23. vice president joe biden making headlines for something he said while inviting firefighters to come to the white house for a beer. [ inaudible ] >> i didn't know you guys were here. you come to the white house i will buy you the beer. >> the vice president made the comments yesterday in shanksville, pennsylvania. it was during a ceremony that remembered the passengers of the flight 93. yesterday as you know was the 11th anniversary of the september 11th attacks. the mysterious construction going on that is wrapping up at the white house we may never know what they were really

building. in fact, we are looking live at the white house right now. for two years crews have been working behind a large green fence right near the west wing. these are live pictures. according to official statements they have been upgrading the white house utilities but speculation something really big was being built under ground. whatever it was the white house isn't saying anything. and more work is set to begin on the north lawn. emotions ran high during a vallejo city council meeting last night. >> i want justice for everybody. not just mine. but for everybody. >> about 200 people attended that hearing. they demanded the city take action against vallejo police force. there have been seven officer involved shootings since may. five of them fatal. one of the speakers was a mother of mario romero. 23-year-old that was gunned down at the beginning of the month. >> i'm somebody. my son was somebody also.

[ cheering and applause ] and my son was killed. >> vallejo mayor davis offered sympathies to the family and added it was not his intention to appear to take sides in the case. romero's family accused him of previously telling reporters he was satisfied with the police account of the shooting. citizen advisory meeting was canceled last night due to public outbursts. stanford and uc berkeley made the list of top universities. uc berkeley was the highest ranking public university in 21st place. other california schools making the list include ucla, and usc sharing the 24th spot. harvard and princeton tied for first place for the second year in a row. time now 6:26.

the federal reserve. economic, stimulus announcement could be made. we'll see what happens. and of course apple. there is one analyst saying that stocks run $660 a share. one analyst says it's going over $700. >> we'll smile and say good morning, to you. thank you for joining us here. the middle of the week now wednesday, september 12th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. time is 6:30. we do have that developing news from overseas this morning. marine reenforcements are heading to the libyan city of benghazi where four americans were killed in a rocket attack on the u.s. consulate. in about an hour president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton will also deliver a statement about the overnight events. ktvu alex savidge joins us now from uc berkeley and tells us the u.s. ambassador that was killed grew up here in the bay area. >> reporter: i just talked with a friend and former coworker that told me chris stephs is one of the nice -- chris

stevens is one of the nicest buys he knew. stevens was a career foreign service member a middle east expert who also spoke arabic and french. according to the white house stevens and three other americans were killed when an angry group of mostly on conservatives stormed the consulate. the group was angry over a viral video that was made by a man from california that mocks islam's profit mohammed. that is why they stormed the consulate. stevens went back trying to evacuate staff members. a short time ago i got a chance to talk by phone to one of stevens former colleagues at the state department. >> he was one of our best and brightest and more than that he was a really genuine guy who could just you know make even

the toughest jobs seem very pleasant just by you know his presence. >> reporter: stevens had been working as a u.s. diplomat to libya since 2007. as far as his background they also received his law degree from hastings college of law in san francisco. and a short time ago the dean of the hastings school of law e- mailed me a statement about stevens death. it said in part obviously he was very saddened by what took place but he also said the ambassador was in his words performing the highest role a lawyer is called upon to perform. that would be public service. we are live this morning in berkeley alex savidge. time now 6:33. overnight news a man is in a san francisco hospital after being attacked with a flashlight nearby golden gate park. this happened about 11:00 p.m. on 41st avenue and fulton street. right near ocean beach. the victim was in an argument with another man who then

according to police beat him with a flashlight. that victim we're told is in stable condition this morning. nonlife threatening injuries. the suspect was arrested on assault charges. a man in a wheelchair was among the people forced to flee flames this morning in alameda. an apartment was on fire. ktvu tara moriarty is in alameda now where the red cross is helping the people who now need a place to live for awhile. tara. the wood was cracking, the windows were popping and then shattering. this according to the folks that lived inside of this blue victorian you see on the corner. it was so loud they say that is what woke them up. folks were pretty shaken up and didn't want to talk to us on camera. they say flames broke out around 1:00 this morning on the corner of pacific and chestnut. 15 people were forced out of the four plex. it took more than two dozen firefighters an hour to douse the flames. when crews arrived a

quadriplegic man was trapped inside the first floor unit. >> we have heavy fires showing to the rear of the building. on the first and second floors. bystanders advised us of a person needing to be rescued. they went inside and got that person out successfully. was not injured. >> reporter: welcomely no -- luckily no one else was hurt. red cross is helping folks find a temporary place to stay. no cross yet as to what sparked the fire. the fire appears to have broken out in the back of the house. investigators haven't said if it started on the inside or outside. we will keep you posted. live from alameda i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. happening right now senate majority leader harry reid is addressing congress regarding the deadly attacks against americans in libya. let's listen in. >> to travel the world. i always make sure to wherever i go i visit with foreign

service personnel. they are every place. there is no group of people i tell them that every time i have the opportunity to visit with them no one does our country more in a positive sense than these foreign service officers. they work so hard and their duties stations most of the time are very, very difficult. you can take for example this good man ambassador stevens who was just confirmed a few months ago. he was a peace core volunteer in morocco. he taught english there. he is fluent in arabic, french, and english. he served in jerusalem and cairo, saudi arabia, iran, and the staff assistant of the bureau nor eastern affairs. >> we are listening in live to

senate majority leader harry reid. he is talking about the tragic events overnight. the u.s. consulate in libya stormed rocket attack christopher stevens u.s. ambassador was killed along with three other americans. we have been talking about him imparticular we grew up here in the bay area. we will be talking about that and updating that story throughout the morning. and we also understand president obama will talk about the overnight develops in just about 45 minutes. we'll bring that to you as well. time now just turning 6:37. we have information from milpitas where the night store clerk was killed. police just released this picture. one of three suspects you can clearly see faces here. the two other suspects they have their faces covered. now milpitas police say the three men robbed the store early saturday morning. they shot and killed the night clerk. now 7-eleven is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and

conviction. the reverend gerald lenyard facing perjury charges for lying under oath. back in july lynch was acquitted of brutally beating lenyard. during the trial lenyard took the witness stand he denied the molestation charges and refused to answer anymore questions. a group of adults who also claim they were arrested by lenyard they hope those charges stick. they say he should face some kind of punishment since the deadline to prosecute him for child molestation has passed. former students of san jose bellarmine high school are getting letters telling them about case of alleged sexual abuse. no charges were ever filed. the jesuits are considering a credible claim. they are sending letters to

students that attended bellarmine between 1964 and 1974. the alleged abuser also taught at jesuit high in san francisco county. there are a lot of people heading out on the roads. let's check in with sal. >> the roads look pretty good so far. let's go out and take a look at interstale 880. it looks pretty good north and southbound with no major problems driving through here or on 580 getting to the bay bridge toll plaza which is backed up for a 10-15 minute delay. this is a typical delay unless you are in the car pool lane you will be waiting there for a bit. if you are in hayward southbound 880 traffic here looks pretty good heading south there is a little bit of slowing already building up as you pass eighth street. 6:39 let's go to steve. sal, thank you. we have mostly cloudy skies. but it's just fog and low clouds. inland some locations are already clear. there will be another day where we start off cool and end up

warm to hot. unless you are close to the bay. tropical clouds continue to gear up over the sierra nevada. anyone up there today might want to keep an eye on the sky. definitely down toward las vegas and phoenix it's active down there. yesterday they were working their way up the coast. now it's solid. subtle changes. if anything temperatures might come down a degree or two. only somebody in weather would notice. on shore breeze is there. slightly stronger. 52-57. antioch now 57. fair field 56. san jose 54. west, southwest 16 at travis. there was a gust of 20 about a couple hours ago. there is a little bit of a component of a sea breeze. tropical clouds will continue to stay there. you can see building high pressure. that is a sign to come for the middle of the country. for us it just means high pressure is building in.
