to talk with one of his former professors. he told me the way he was killed trying to rescue his colleague says a lot about the kind of man he was. >> he was a bay area native with a passion for diplomacy. >> he was interested in international law, going toward the foreign service always his dream job. >>reporter: he graduated in 1989 and got his undergraduate degree from uc berkley and became a u.s. depp mat in libyan 2007. we found this video on you toobin tube introducing himself to the libyan people. he described himself as sufficient, but open-minded.

police were chasing an suv following an armed robbery. at one point the robbers threw money out the window drawing a large crowd who had possibly been watching the chase live on television. deputies eventually arrested two men. a man died in oakland after someone shot him.

it happened around 10:30 near west mcarthur boulevard. paramedics took the men to the hospital. police are still looking for the shooters. a murder that took place two years ago today is being looked into. a man was walking with his fiance when they were attacked by 2 robbers just before four in the morning after they left a party celebrating the 35th birthday. the two shooters were seen driving an older model two tone suv. there is a 20,000-dollar reward in this case. a car hit and killed an 81- year-old woman this morning in san jose. police say the woman was crossing north jackson avenue when a 1993 toyota tercel hit her. she died at the scene. the driver stopped and cooperated, and officers are

trying to figure out how the accident happened. there were frantic moments when firefighters arrived at an apartment fire in alameda on pacifica avenue. people said a quadriplegic was trapped inside one of the units . >> bystanders advised us that a person need to be rescued. they were gotten out without injury. >> they think the fire began outside the building, and 15 residents were displaced. the red cross is helping with temporary accommodations. the family of a fallen officer is preparing for his funeral tomorrow. monday officers escorted the

flag draped coffin carrying the body to a mortuary. he was gunned down during a traffic spot. services are set for 10:00 at the mission church. palo alto police say they've seen a big jump in home burglaries. police say they're taking steps to deal with the problem. >>reporter: besides bikers and runners, be prepared to see more officers on patrol in neighborhoods. the department says home robberies are on the rise for the second time this year. these dots represent burglaries since august 1. the recent concentration in the crescent park neighborhood we go for a half hour around the house and lock the house.

>>reporter: there were 151 burglaries between january and september, up since 2011. that's why police are stepping up their lock it or lose it program encouraging people to get to know their neighbors and report any suspicious behavior right away. >> we have to set it up and ask for help if we have a problem. >>reporter: police say to be aware of the work being done on neighbors' homes. they say police use work vehicles as decoys. what they're actually doing is front that long they're doing legitimate business, but they're inside ransacking and burglarizing and place the personal property in the van and drive away. >> we're putting as many resources as we can as possible. >>reporter: that includes what you may not see, detectives in plain clothes and unmarked cars watching all over the city.

the reno air races are underway with a new emphasis on safety after last year's horrific crash. 11 people including the pilot died last year in this crash. this morning race officials described the safety changes they've made. >> if you look out in front you can see safety barriers that have been put in place to prevent any debris to move towards the spectators. our fuel trucks are moved off the ramp. >> last month the national transportation safety board released findings that the crew of the plane had made modifications and did not test the plane for racing at high speeds. the fog we had this morning beginning to clear out.

a warming trend is still on track as we head into thursday and friday. lingering patches pushing back into the bay. this cloud deck will retreat as we head into the afternoon hours. as far as temperatures right now just updated. you can see the readings in the 70s inland, fairfield, antioch and livermore. san jose reporting mostly sunny skies and temperature of 70. for today, coastal fog, warm numbers inland. tomorrow everybody up a few degrees, and the weekend morning fog. we go the other direction especially as we head into sunday with minor cooling. fog hugging the coastline.

inland warming back up to 86 degrees for this afternoon. lots of sunshine out towards santa rosa, fairfield and brentwood, 90 degrees in brentwood. a little warmer for today, especially away from the coastline and pretty much the same deal into thursday, warmest locations inland on track to reach the lower 90s, and then a few minor changes by the weekend with your weekend always in view. a little cooler for saturday and also increasing fog and bringing back cooler temperatures for sunday and probably into next week. so a little bit of a warmup today, but nothing extreme. no triple digit temperatures, but mid 90s.

it is feeling like fall in the morning hours. the bridge will be closed for an earthquake retrofit for at least one, possibly two weekends next month. workers will adjust hinges to make the deck more flexible and replace a cracked beam discovered two years ago. the closure is scheduled for the weekend of october 19. if the work is not complete that weekend, the bridge will be shut down again the following weekend. coming soon, a new way to get across the bay, a water taxi for the general public. the san francisco port commission approved it yesterday and pending a final contract could begin service october if one. the hop on hop off boat service will run on a regular scheduled and shuttle passengers between heidemarie stefanyshy-piper street areas. great news for the oakland
