stay away from frank ogawa plaza. police say home burglaries are on the rise and they are taking action. since august 1 there have been 31 burglaries. 151 since january 1. that is up 65% from last year. police say they are stepping up their lock it or lose it program and encouraging people to report suspicious behavior. >> reporter: in concord -- >> in concord a decline in crime for the first six months. one homicide compared to three last year. aggregated assaults from 118 to 106. vehicle thefts dropped from 366 to 271. cupertino has bragging rights, one of the best small cities in the united states.

public funds are under funded. researchers pinpointed a cause for a major outbreak of whooping cough in the united states. the latests were of the vaccine -- version of the vaccine loses its effectiveness in five years. the number of whooping cough cases climbed, even among children who have the vaccine. they are looking at ways to reverse the trend. the environmental protection agency and save the bay released the trash hot spots and here is a map of the five areas. they include coyote creek, baxter creek, and san tomas creek. the report says the sites all have high levels levels of trash and they are in violation of the clean water act. >> we need to be responsible for stopping the trash from

a woman was killed as she crossed a street in san jose this morning. the woman was walking across north jackson avenue at 6:20 a.m. this morning. she was hit by a car driven by a 50-year-old man. the drive stopped and is cooperating with police. the district attorney decided not to file charges against a priest accused of child molestation. this followed jerold lindner's testimony of william lynch who was acquitted of beating jerold lindner. they believe he wasn't being truthful when he denied molesting william lynch as a

child. >> it wasn't -- the fact that jerold lindner lied about it was not material that was relevant. the are new pictures of that fire at the chevron refinery in richmond. this video is from a surveillance camera on august 6. investigators say the walls of the pipe that failed were western as thin as a -- were western as thin as a pen -- were worn as thin as a penny. chevron announced it is acquiring a oil field in mexico. they say 246,000 acres is already producing 7,000-barrels of oil a day. after months of leaks and rumors apple unveiled hits
