oaks elementary school. i want to show you the damage left behind by this police chase and shooting. take a look at the three poles in this roundabout that goes in front of the front of the elementary school. you can see they are pushed over. that is because that is where the vehicle the police were chasing just came to a stop when it got out of control. let me give you a look at it last night so you can get a better look at how everything ended up. this is where the vehicle stopped. police say the two suspects got out. one tried to run. one of them actually turned and made a gesture toward police. the officer fired his gun. no one was hit. the two suspects were taken into custody. let's let them explain how it all started. >> this originated as an investigative stop. officers tried to stop the car or the truck and eluded them to get on the freeway. traveled from vallejo on the

freeway. 60, 70, 80 miles an hour. >> reporter: again one officer did fire his weapon but no one was hit and those two suspects taken into custody. the contra costa times reporting this started as a drug and weapons investigation. we know along the 680 and 780 when they went the suspects threw evidence out the window. they did recover some drugs. what they did not recover as far as we know is a weapon. the police officer said there was a gesture made toward him. that is why he fired his weapon. as far as we know no weapon has been recovered. live in pleasant hill claudine wong. there has been a new development in our continuing coverage of the chaos in the middle east. violence has now erupted in sudan where hundreds of protestors stormed the german embassy. setting fire to cars and trash cans. police are using tear gas there to stop the violence as they have in kay ran. we want to take you live there

this morning to egypt where you can see a huge crowd of people still out there. security forces have constructed a temporary wall near the u.s. embassy in cairo. security extremely tight following the uproar. four people have been arrested in libya in connection with the attack on the american continue lat in benghazi. u.s. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed in that attack. american warships are on their way to the coast of libya now and several marines have been deployed as well. there is a report from british newspaper claiming the united states has early warnings about the attacks in libya. coming up at 6:15 you will get the reaction from the obama administration to that report when we get a live report from our washington, d.c. bureau. time is 6:04. it's going to take several hours before the power is back on to at least a dozen homes in

hayward. power is out. went out about 1:00 this morning. a driver crashed into a power pole on campus drive. now the pole and its wires there they are down on the road. witnesses say the female driver hit it and kept driving. >> i heard pop pop pop no skid marks or anything. and then our power went out. we came outside and people all across the streetcars all smashed up. >> we still don't know what caused that crash with police. as you can see here it took the driver into custody. no one was hurt. we have new information on a fire that forced classes to be canceled at a school in menlo park. ktvu channel 2 reporter lorraine blanco is back at beachwood elementary school with what investigators discovered about that building after that big fire. lorraine. >> reporter: the menlo park fire chief says the trailer that burnt down did not have a

monitor fire system or sprinkler system. firefighters were able to salvage a few file cabinets and shelves but not much else. take a look over here. the modular building that burnt down is just in pieces. the fire here at the nonprofit private school start the just before 4:00 a.m. yesterday and it took three hours to get under control. these types of modular buildings are intended to be temporary structures. they are not required to have the alarm systems or sprinklers. the fire chief says the warning systems could have prevented the fire as becoming as large as it did. fire investigators determine it started in the teachers break room because of a electrical cord. because of the light structure of trailers the roof collapsed and the walls buckled it in making it necessary to bring in a military motor vehicle annoys kava tour to pull up the wreckage and put out the fire

underneath it. we put a call in to find out if the other buildings have sprinklers in place. the school serves kinder garden to eighth grade students. live in menlo park lorraine blanco. arson is suspected in an antioch fire in a strip mall. that happened on l street and sycamore drive. firefighters think someone set a row of trees behind the store on fire. the fire spread to one of the stores. no one was hurt. so far there have been no arrests. they are also investigating another fire that happened a block away. >> hoping to preorder the iphone five this morning you better hurry up. preorder started overnight. apple sold out of its initial ever inventory in less than one

time now 6:13. there is a report this morning the california public utilities commission say there is is dozens of miles of unsafe pipes right under the streets of san francisco in and a city ordinance is preventing pg&e from finishing the work. pg&e bans under ground work like pipe returns in over 3,000 road segments. according to the san francisco examiner general council frank lynn sent a letter asking the city attorney to tell the department of public works to allow pg&e to do its work. pg&e say trace already replaced more than 500 miles of gas pipelines in san francisco. there are 36 more miles to go. look at this. a very dangerous look at this. this is in miami beach, florida. a driver of a car had to carefully back away from this burning electrical wire. the wire fell down, started a fire near businesses.

the road was blocked off. the power was disconnected. that car had to slide away backwards. luckily no one was hurt. a woman who is critically injured in a deadly accident in walnut creek is making progress in her recovery. there is a memorial on a sidewalk. the mother-in-law 52-year-old sherry hicks did not survive that accident. the driver of the truck is now out of jail. he has not been charged with any crime although police say that could still happen. there is new scrutiny of u.s. embassy security following the deadly attack in libya. alison burns is in our washington, d.c. newsroom with details of an alarming report that the u.s. should have done more to protect diplomats overseas. >> reporter: the british newspaper reports this morning u.s. officials knew 48 hours in advance of the libya attack

that u.s. offices overseas, american diplomats could be targeted. for americans including ambassador chris stevens was killed in the attack the independent reports no warnings were given to diplomats overseas to go on lockdown or high alert even though officials knew there might be violence. we are trying to confirm the report. i talked to a senior member of the intelligence committee that wants an investigation. >> i hope america learns a lesson from this and the administration learns a lesson we have to be on our guard 24/7 and here who knows. the facts will show whether we were or whether we weren't. >> reporter: security at embassies around the world has been increased significantly since the eruption of protests in the middle east.

time is 6:16. the ninth case of the possibly deadly hantavirus has been reported by officials at yosemite. the latest victim stayed at a tent cabin in july and since recovered from the virus. earlier this week the parks sent out another round of warning letters telling guests about it. raising wareness about this disease that is born by rodents. since the middle of june three people have died from the hantavirus. back here at home police investigating an overnight shooting. this happened at the parks manner apartment. this is according to the contra costa times. we don't have any confirmation of anyone being injured. that report follows another report of a shooting a week ago. last friday 18-year-old devon george was shot and killed while filming a rap video at pittsburgh buchanon park. the fate of ross mirkarimi

union city and fremont it looks good. steve. what is it going to be like today in beautiful walnut creek, california? >> it will be nice. low clouds around there. lifting a little bit and also a little stronger sea breeze. i was just looking out to the end of september at some of the forecast models. there is no rain. not eastbound in crescent city. usually we get our first rain a around the 25th. it looks really quiet here with everything in the middle of the country. high clouds will filter in a little bit. high pressure still hot for inland areas. not as hot as yesterday. still 80s and 90s. clearing around the bay. 65 to 75. there is a lot of fog on the coast and it's not beginning anywhere. this time of year usually september and october some of the nicest weather and the cities on the coast no sign of anything yet. there is one forecast model that shows a little bit. 80s and 90s.

news. it's a friday. i got choked up about a friday. i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. time now is 6:30. right now pg&e crews are working on getting the power back on in hayward. police say a woman crashed her van right into a power pole early this morning on campus drive. ktvu tara moriarty is out there this morning where there is also an environmental issue now. tara. >> reporter: that is right environmental crews are still on scene trying to mop up oil that spilled from one of the transformers and literally two minutes ago we had two very, very large pg&e trucks pull into the scene. this intersection will be blocked off from here down to campus and oaks until 2:00 to 3:00 this afternoon. around 1:00 in the morning a woman driving a gold mini van crash into a utility pole. the pole crashed snagging some wires. witnesses say the woman kept driving about 100 yards but eventually stopped. >> they were disoriented.

needed to use the phone. they didn't seem that much concerned for their health. they said we're cool. they were not cool. the whole car was crunched up. >> reporter: now police wouldn't confirm if the woman was arrested for dui but she was taken into custody unharmed. we are one block from the cal state university east bay campus. and close to east elementary school. as far as the cost of the damage one worker told me he estimates that it will run at least $15,000 to fix all of this. live in hayward i'm tara moriarty. time so 6:32. developing news from overseas. the backlash over that antiislam movie causing more violence in the middle east and beyond. now from lebanon reports one person has been killed. dozens more have been injured. officials say angry crowds set fire to two western fast food restaurants. police reportedly opened fire

last night so that you can see what this looked like. this police chase started in vallejo a little before 8:00 in the evening. police tell us that it started as an investigative stop. we are hearing for drugs and weapons. they tried to pull the vehicle over but the driver kept going. got on the freeway crossed a couple freeways. about a half mile off 680 off the monument boulevard exit that is when the suspects crashed. the police officer on scene explains why one officer ended up firing his weapon. >> crashed into the protective poles. officers took an individual in custody. >> reporter: individual? >> there were two in the car. there was two male drivers at which point the driver ran out a car and made a jestture. >> reporter: that officer fired one shot.

that did not hit the suspects or anyone else involved. two suspects taken into custody we are told they are facing drugs and weapons charges this morning we come out here live to the school. you can see this damage not effecting school. they have one person that came in to open the gates. we expect parents and kids to come in here as usual as this investigation continues. but again two people in custody now. one shot fired. that didn't hit anyone. but this investigation is certainly under way. live here in pleasant hill claudine wong ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:37. an investigation into an oakland hills house fire continues this morning. it happened on norfolk road at this house. firefighters say the flames broke out in the basement. to one was home at the time. nearby neighbors were concerned because their homes were built where homes were destroyed in the 1991 oakland hills fire. firefighters say this was hard to fight because the flames got into the walls and was hard to

see. new information this morning surrounding the chevron refinery fire in richmond last month. the city and air regulators are saying six air monitoring stations that chevron agreed to install in 2010 were not put in place. it caused small warnings. companies claim there wasn't a defined schedule when they needed to be installed. time is 6:36. happening as we speak runners in san francisco are getting ready to take off for a 24 hour relay race and our cameras are live. live picture for the second annual ragnar napa race. the first teams left at 5:00 this morning. the run is 200 miles. it ends in cal la toga. >> teams sticker their vans, paint their faces. dress up in costume.

out yesterday. 60 at antioch. temperatures overnight lows about two to four degrees cooler. yesterday at this time fairfield, antioch, livermore, san jose all sitting isn't the 60s. santa rosa 52. a little bit more of a west, southwest breeze kicking up. vacaville gets a west, southwest. still though 80s and 90s. but if you head west you will find 60s and 70s and maybe upper 50s. looks lick this high -- looks like this high pressure system will erode a little bit. it won't be flexing its muscles much. some of the high clouds hanging out toward the north. fog, sun, cool for some. westerly breeze a little cooler though as the pattern looks like it's coming down a little bit for inland temps. still 90s. a lot of 70s and 80s between with 60s by the coast. berkeley 68. pittsburgh 91. 73 hayward. san leandro 71. 80 san jose. up against the hills but 83

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. live at the big board. dow jones up 60 points. nasdaq and s & p are all up on the fed announcing it's going to inject money into the system. but there is some harsh criticism that could be counterfeit money. time now 6:55. she is a member of the british royal family and she was shown topless. now the royal family threatens to sue. a french magazine published topless photos of kate middleton the duchess of cambridge. those photos were taken last week when they were on vacation at a private chateau in france.

the duke and duchess of cambridge are on a tour of asia right now. they are not happy their privacy was invaded. twitter is expected to hand over between thes from an occupy wall street protestor to a judge in new york. that protestor were among hundreds arrested. twitter has been fighting a subpoena for those tweets for months be prosecutors in manhattan want those tweet which are no longer online to attack the claims by the protestor that police led the demonstrators on the bridges roadway just to arrest them for blocking traffic. the aclu has obtained new documents that show the fbi closely monitored the activities of occupy oakland. the reports include an alert issued before last years shut down of west coast ports. the aclu wants access to more documents but the fbi is refusing to release them citing security concerns. ktvu news has learned that millions of toilets are being recalled because they could be at risk of exploding.

the toilets were installed with a defective pressure system made by the flush mate company. they were manufactured between 1997 and 2008. they have free repair kits that homeowners have to install. many say the instructions are so hard to follow they have to pay a plumber. homeowners are also saying they do nothing to fix another problem. leaking tanks. >> the manufacture saying you can go longer use this product. and we are requiring that you repair it and you assume the burden of the cost of that repair. so cost wise if you have a leaky tank, it's actually cheaper to put in a new toilet. >> the u.s. consumer product safety commission has received more than $300 complaints of the product exploding. the problem has caused at least 14 injuries and property damage and an attorney from danville has filed a class action lawsuit. flush mate so far no comment on
