pushing down those three poles for fair oaks elementary. those actually are cemented into the ground so if you actually look really close, you can see a crack in the cement just below one of those poles, just from the force of that vehicle hitting and actually -- you can see in this gentleman's hand, the gmc from the truck left behind. i want to give you a look at the scene last night. so you can get a better idea of how all of this ended up. it started over in vallejo but ended when the suspects went down this dead end road, presumably they didn't realize where any were going when they got off the 680 -- where they were going when they got off the 6 -- 680 freeway. we did ask the sergeant. >> officers tried to stop the car. it eluded them. got on the freeway, traveled from vallejo on the freeway,

60, 70, 80 miles an hour, through the surface streets here through pleasant little. >> reporter: one officer did fire his weapon here at the elementary school when one of the suspects got out of the car. one suspect made a gesture. the officer fired one shot. it did not hit anything. but again, through two counties ending up in pleasant hill. two people behind bars. but this morning school will go on as scheduled. it's this good that he had the poles in place because otherwise who knows where that car would have ended up. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. arson is suspected in antioch at a strip mar fire. it happened around 10:45 last

night at -- mall fire. it happened around 10:45 last night. the fire then spread to one of the stores. no one was hurt and so far there have been no arrests. firefighters are investigating another fire that happened about a block away. time now, 7:03. well, the power's still out in one part of hayward this morning affect about a dozen houses. it may be hours before it's back on. a van smashed a power pole on campus drive. that knocked over power wires. tara moriarty, you went pout there at 4:30. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, this intersection is going to be blocked all the wait down for about a mile. if you take a look behind me, you can see the pg&e crews are quite busy. it's quite dramatic -- you can see how the wires are snagged into the middle of the roadway there. if we sort of pan to the right, you can see that power pole just playing -- just laying there and it will stay that way

at 2, 3:00 this afternoon -- 2:00, 3:00 in afternoon. here's what happened, a woman driving a gold minivan crashed into the power pole. the pole fell snagging the fires and knocking out electricity for upwards of homes nearby. witnesses say the woman kept driving after the crash for about 100 yards and stopped in front of a man's home and she did seem a bit oriented. >> i heard pop, pop, pop. no skid marks. and then our power went out. we came outside. and then the people across the street, their car's all smashed up. >> reporter: police don't confirm whether the woman was taken in for a dui. but she was taken into custody we're very close to east elementary school. so do expect delays. back here live you can see there's some environmental

services truck. these crews were responsible for mopping up some of the oil that leaked from one of the transformers affected. live in hayward, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:05. two east bay cities talking about the possibility of merging their police dispatch service. this is acoring to a -- according to a new report if they did that. besides saving millions of dollars, reportedly, this study says other advantages of consolidation are better suited for dispatchers between the police departments and much more. 7:06. continuing coverage now on the protests overseas as backlash over an anti-muslim film is preding. in egypt police used tear gas from advancing on the u.s. embassy in cairo and a temporary aols wall has been

constructed to keep -- wall has been constructed to keep protesters out. fire was set to two western fast-food westerns. people were hurt. and in sudan, the germany embassy was attacked and partially blamed. the protesters are now said to be gathered outside of the embassy. in the meantime, libya, four people have been arrested in connection with the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. u.s. embassy chris stevens and three other americans were killed in the attack. u.s. warships are headed to the coast of libya and a group of marines has also been deployed. a british newspaper is claiming that the u.s. had early warnings about the attack in libya. we'll get reaction from the obama administration from that when we go live to our washington, d.c. bureau. 7:07. well, service rating for --

ratings in san francisco, for muni, they had a 57% on-time rating in august. that compares to 53% in march. muni blames this on a shortage of drivers and then they say a number of employees have called in sick lately. let's check in with sal. i heard you mention that normally friday light, kind of not happening. we got off to a bad start. highway 4 is one of them. we had some late-running roadwork in the construction zone in antioch and pittsburgh pittsburg. the roadwork is gone. now the backup is pretty solid from antioch all the way out to concord. on this friday, when some people think you might have a better commute today it's just not. you are wondering why is it so slow? well, it was late running roadwork again.

the city and air regulators are now saying that six air monitoring stations that chevron agreed to install in 2010 were not put in place. officials say it caused slow warnings about the dangers of pollutants from the fire. the company claims there was not a defined schedule saying exactly when that equipment needed to be installed. new this morning, the state public utilities commission says there are dozens of miles of unsafe pipes under the streets of san francisco and the department of public works bans underneath work in 3,000 road segments in the city. according to" the examiner "-- according to the" examiner "pg&e was told they could

last night a black bear wandered into a quiet los angeles neighborhood checking out swimming pools. it's on the steps there, drinking a little water there. this is in granada hills. several people saw the bear, called the police. the police came, blocked off the area, and then they finally chased the bear around until he headed back up into the hills. a san francisco supervisor is rethinking the city's plan for tree maintenance. in an attempt to save costs, san francisco is passing the responsibility of maintaining 110,000 trees across the city to property owners. but the "examiner" reports that scott wiener should do more, the city believes. funding could come from a parcel tax between $60 to $90 a

7:30. menlo fire investigators say a school that caught fire yesterday did not have fire alarms or sprinkler systems. lorraine blanco is live with more on why the school says the students there are safe. lorraine? >> reporter: well, school officials say they have alarms in place. they can go off when students and staff are pleasant. they just don't have monitored alarms overnight when the fire happens. right now, you can see the excavator is back, that huge piece of equipment so administrators can pick through the damage and meet through insurance agents here. the fire started just before 4:00 a.m. yesterday. it took it three hours to get it under control. these kinds of modular buildings protesters meant to be temporary structure us so they are not required to have

sprinkler systems. the direct give -- executive director said they've been raising money to build more perm structures in place but until they have that, the -- more permanent structures in place. >> these are older buildings. the alarms and sprinkler systems were not required when we put them in. the classrooms are small. the rooms have two exits. >> reporter: and the fire department think the flames started near the stove. the school plans to reopen on monday. in the meantime, the nonprofit school could use some help.

police say this man allegedly hired someone to kill his wife. the detectives set up an undercover sting operation. they did make an arrest on him on wednesday after he allegedly paid cash. he's facing charges of solicitation of murder. 7:37. four people are dead. eight others are injured after a horrific crash in las vegas. police say a driver lost control and slammed into a bus stop number of people yesterday morning. three women and one man were killed at the scene. the 24-year-old driver is one of the people seriously injured. police say he was drunk and there are reports he may have been going up to 100 miles per hour. a bicyclist accused of kit hitting and -- of hitting and killing a pedestrian this year is scheduled to appear in court

it's friday, september 14th. we have breaking news right now come out -- out of the middle east. an angry mob has just broken into the u.s. embassy in tunisia. reportedly, they've taken down the american flag and now a large cloud of black smoke can be seen coming out of the embassy. police have responded. gunfire can be heard. tear gas can be heard as well. police used tear gas here from cairo, egypt. a temporary wall -- wall has been built now. in lebanon, police reportedly shot and killed a protester -- protester who set fire to two fast-food restaurants. four people have been arrested in the attack committed on libya at the u.s.

consulate. u.s. warships are headed to the coast of libya and the marines have been sent as well. there is a report from a british newspaper this morning that claims the united states had early warnings about the attacks in libya. coming up at 8:15, we'll bring you reaction from the obama administration. we'll give you a live report from washington, d.c. coming up 0 8:4 -- coming up on 8:01. investigators are examining the damage left behind at fair oaks elementary. we're live where the high-speed chase ended in had gunfire. quite a bit of drama there. claudine wong has more. claudine? >> reporter: all of the drama is over. you can see the damage that's left behind. if you take a look at those poles in this round-about area, you can see the gates closed.

there was no one here and no one on campus but certainly it did cause some damage. i want to show you the scene so you can get a good look at how this all came down. this car was chased by vallejo police, ended up in front of this yard. the two suspects tried to get away. the police officer -- the police officers actually tried to stop this car in vallejo about 20-plus miles away. we just talked to one neighbor and she told us what she heard. there was like a bunch of cop cars. a car came speeding pass and i heard gunshots and at least 10, 12 of them. >> reporter: the sergeant on scene told us she heard a gunshot because one shot was fired by a police officer. he says after this car came to a stop, the two suspects got out and that's when en-- that's when he said one of the suspects made a gesture. here is him explaining why that

officer fired his gun. >> crashed into the protective pole. officers took the individuals in custody. >> individual or -- >> there were two in the car. there were two male cars -- there were two males. >> reporter: back here live where school is getting underway. the bell rang at 8:00 this morning. this was a stop that started over drugs and weapons. and we are told that they did recover some drugs but as far as we know, no weapon has been recovered. that investigation is still ongoing. live here in pleasanton, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. 8:03. arson suspected in antioch after a strip mall fire overnight. it happened around 10:45 on l street and sycamore drive.

firefighters think someone torched this rope, trees behind the stores. the flames spread to one of the doors -- to one of the stores. a van crashed into a power pole at 1:00 this morning on campus drive. tara moriarty has been on the scene since 4:00 this morning. are the roads still closed there as well? >> reporter: they sure are, and they should remain about that way until 2:00, 3:00. we're here on campus drive. if you take a look behind me here, it's a pretty dramatic scene. the pole that they are attached to completely toppled. around 1:00 this morning, a woman driving a gold minivan crashed into the utility pole, it fell snagging some high- voltage wires and knocking out twice to about 1 to -- to about

12 to 20 homes nearby. the woman says she kept driving disoriented but she did stop. >> police would not confirm if the woman was arrested for dui but she was taken into custody. we're about one block from the cal university and close to some bus stops. as far pass the cost of the damage, one work estimates it will run at least $15,000, a pretty large restitution fee for the driver to pay. you can see the traffic lights are not working obviously because of the power outage. there have been some signs that the police just placed at the enof this treatment letting folks know that this intersection was shut down so there wouldn't be a traffic jam. we're looking at 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon before campus is fully open again.

live in hayward, i'm tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. a search continues now for a purse snatcher in san mateo county. it happened last friday at the baklava restaurant. police say the thief reached from an open window and stole a woman's purse on the back of a chair. he took off running, put the purse in a car and then ran. he was arrested. now they are going after the vehicle. chick-fil-a is scheduled to open 5th. there is a -- open october 25th. there is a peaceful protest planned. it's aimed at the president's comments opposing gay marriage.

firefighters help save lives every day. one san francisco firefighter is trying to save her own. but it's coming with the big fight. about six months ago, jenette rivera was diagnosed with breast cancer. show says she's -- breast cancer. she's out of sick leave and is using savings to support her children. she says half of the department is willing to donate sick time but a request was denied by the city claiming it's not a life- threatening illness. so she was forced to go back to work just days before having surgery. >> if it doesn't get taken care of, it can kill me. this is all about fighting. that's what we have to do, fight, fight so i can get my paycheck. >> we contacted the department of public health and they told us they are not allowed to address personnel matters and she does plan to a -- plan to

another college campus has been evacuated after a bomb threat. north dakota state university
