. good morning. welcome to mornings on 2. it is saturday, september 15th. i'm claudine wong. >> good morning, everyone. i'm mike mibach. meteorologist mike, good morning, great to see you. >> great to be here this early saturday morning. we do have once again low clouds and fog covering the coast and right around the bay. for this morning, it will be a factor out there, 50 to 60 degrees, into the afternoon hours, temperatures ranging from the lower 60s to around 90 degrees for the warmest locations inland. coming up in about 8 minutes, we'll take a look at the numbers in your neighborhood and also highlight the changes you can expect the second half of the weekend. new this morning, san jose police are investigating after a truck driver hit and killed an 8-year-old boy on a small motorized bike. ktvu's alex savage, live this morning in san jose to explain what led to the deadly accident. >> reporter: well, this crash clearly has had an impact on people in this neighborhood. you can look over here and see

there's been a memorial set up for this 8-year-old boy who was killed. people have left flowers and candles here at the scene. he was riding on what police refer to as a pocket bike, a small electric motorcycle, when he was hit by a truck. now, this accident happened just before 8:00 last night on the 800 block of farm drive. san jose police say this boy rode into the street, right into the path of that truck. he suffered major injuries and died at the hospital. police say the boy was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. the driver of the truck did stay here at the scene after the crash. they are cooperating with investigators and at this point, doesn't look like impairment was an issue here. as we come back out live, this memorial has been left by neighbors here. so far, police are not releasing the name of the boy killed in that crash. live this morning in san jose, alex savage, ktvu channel 2news. all eastbound lanes of interstate 80 are reopened after a three-car crash created an alert for the area. it happened at about 3:50 this morning near the willow avenue off ramp in hercules.

traffic was at a halt when a car came crashing into another stopped vehicle, causing it to burst into flames. the driver of the burning car fled and the five passengers of the speeding car were transported to the hospital, four with minor injuries, one with a serious leg injury. chp says the driver of the speeding car has been detained. we are following developing news from southern california. the filmmaker linked to an internet movie that sparked violent protest in the arab world is being questioned by law enforcement. the los angeles county sheriff's department says the man was not arrested and went in voluntarily for questioning. he has a prior conviction on bank fraud charges. authorities are looking into his role in producing the video may have violated terms of his probation. four americans died in attack on u.s. consulate in libya shortly after the video was posted, including ambassador chris stevens. eight people were arrested and six officers injured in

protests against the antimuslim film in sydney, australia. witnesses say up to 500 people marched in the streets before getting into a confrontation with police in front of the u.s. consulate. police used pepper spray and tear gas to break up protests. two people died and at least 40 people were hurt when protesters stormed the u.s. embassy in tunisia. the embassy was not staffed at the time of the attack. antiamerican protests have now spread to about 20 countries, from the middle east and north africa all the way to australia. you are looking at a map right now of where the demonstrations have taken place. the state department says 65 embassies or consulates around the world have issued emergency messages about the violence and they are cutting back on diplomatic activity. the united states military says it is sending an elite unit of marine special forces and drones to libya to help bring those responsible for killing those americans to justice.

the u.s. has already deployed an fbi investigation team that is trying to track al-qaeda sympathizers who are thought to have turned the benghazi demonstration into a violent one. intelligence officials are also reviewing telephone records and computer traffic. libyan law enforcement agencies say some arrests have already been made. this morning, we are also getting a look at the ruins of the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya, where ambassador chris stevens and the three other americans were killed. coming up at 7:15, how a note found in the debris is shedding light on stevens' mission in libya. in overnight news, san francisco police are investigating a homicide. it happened in the bayview district early this morning. police say they responded to a report of shooting just after 1:30 at osceola lane and lasalle avenue. police haven't released details on the victim or suspects. highway 1 in san mateo county is back open this morning after a fatal crash there shut down part of that roadway for

several hours. that crash was reported just before 101:30 last night. so far, no word on the cause. today, parents plan to help clean up the damage left from a fire that gutted a menlo park school. an early morning fire on thursday destroyed a portable building at beachwood elementary that contained an office and a third grade classroom. we've also learned that due to a loophole in the law, the fire burned for hours before firefighters were actually called. under state law, portable classrooms are only required to have fire alarms that are activated manually. school officials say they are looking into installing an electric alarm that can notify firefighters of a fire even when no one is on school property. well, tomorrow marks six months since the disappearance of morgan hill teenager sierra lamar. this morning, volunteers will once again search remote areas of the south bay for the remains of the 15-year-old. earlier this week, organizers said they are going to suspend their regular midweek searches so they can focus more on the

search efforts on saturdays. also today, a fund-raiser will be held for the sierra lamar fund during the second annual hot cars and gi tars tour, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in hollister. then tomorrow, there will be a balloon release to mark the six months since sierra was last seen alive. that's at burnett elementary school at 6:30 p.m. this morning, two men face charges in the death of a bay area teenager in peru. 18-year-old kyle nolan went on a spiritual retreat in peru's jungle region last month. when he did not return home, his mother traveled to the remote amazon region to find him. police joined the investigation and found nolan's body in a shallow grave at the spiritual center. they say the shawmen confessed to burying nolan after they say he died from drinking tea made with hallucinogenic plants. well, a reminder for air travel this morning. if you're going to fly in and

out of san francisco international airport this weekend, you will likely face delays. one of the two main arrival run ways is shut down for safety improvements and that could mean delays of up to an hour. that work is expected to last through 8:00 a.m. monday morning and that's not going to be the end of it. there are more closures planned for the next two weekends. >> and in the case we do actually get fog in the area, those delays could be longer. let's check in with mark right now and see how we're looking this morning. >> we do have fog developing right now near the coast and near the bay, increasing in coverage. but the afternoon hours will be completely different, with more sunshine out there, temperatures up a few degrees over yesterday's highs. live camera showing you some evidence of that marine layer out there, but still increasing sunshine as we head into the afternoon hours. so for today, you can see some of the fog right now. santa rosa reporting visibility of one half mile. overcast towards san francisco, mountain view, san jose, oakland, also hayward. the fog has been expanding in

. good saturday morning. walnut creek looking towards mount diablo, sun up this morning at 6:52, as scheduled. temperatures near 90 inland this afternoon. a wildfire that's burning near the famous getty center in los angeles county is expected to be contained this morning. that fire started yesterday afternoon on the east side of interstate 405. five helicopters were called in

to make water drops. firefighters also provided protection for a large number -- or a number of large homes in that area. the getty center was closed as a precaution. now, the fire has burned about 70 acres, but did not cause any structural damage. new this morning, taliban is claiming responsibility for an attack on a british base in southern afghanistan that killed two u.s. marines. the taliban says the attack is in response to an antiislammic film that insulted the prophet mohammed. and because prince harry is also stationed at that base, the prince was not injured in the attack at camp bastian. the identities of the marines have not been released. 18 army reserve soldiers have returned home to the bay area, after a year-long deployment in afghanistan. [ cheers & applause ] >> members of the 445 civil affairs battalion arrived at san jose airport yesterday afternoon. the soldiers headed to a special

goofy, but contagious. for his sense of fun and that california cool. n]♪ >> stevens is a graduate of piedmont high school, uc berkeley, and uc hastings college of law. this morning, we are getting a look at the u.s. consulate in benghazi where the diplomats were killed. found at the scene was a note that shed some light on stevens' mission and it read, "libya is so important." investigators say it appears stevens became separated from his guards in the chaos after the attack and died of smoke inhalation. well, if you live near travis air force base, be prepared for loud noises. the air force base says it will be conducting around the clock training through september 22nd. it all started late last night and will include firearms simulators, explosions, and amplified voice commands. most of the activity will happen at night. the base plans to open its northgate at 4:00 a.m., until next friday, to support the

increased traffic during training. well, the oakland police department hopes to add 55 new officers to its force in the coming months. on monday, opd will hold its first police academy in four years. staffing is one of the department's biggest problems. the force is at its lowest level in more than a decade. the department says it loses four to six officers a month to retirement or jobs in other cities. >> certainly, there was some pressure to really get moving and make this happen and we're just so fortunate that so many people stepped up and really helped us to make this a reality. >> now, the goal is to have three police akkad meese a year, but the city says that hasn't happened because of budget problems. this new class of 55 recruits came from a pool of more than 2300 people who took a written test in march. the starting salary is about $70,000. >> well, there is more evidence of a recovering housing market. sales of bay area homes have surged to levels not seen since before the recession. bay area home sales are at their

strongest since 2006. there was a 14% jump in home sales last month compared to august of 2011. and purchase prices were up nearly 11%. some home buyers say the time to buy is now. >> the mortgage rates are incredibly low. we were thinking about expanding our family and there's, there was a house that we had to jump on. >> it's better a better time to buy, if you have the financial resources to put the down payment. that's the key. >> because of low inventory, houses are not lasting long once on the market. well, this morning, we're learning about more people returning to dozens of homeless camps cleared out by the city of san jose. earlier in the summer, you may remember 150 people and 60 tons of trash were removed from 60 different homeless camps in san jose, but neighbors say the homeless are now coming back and the trash is piling up near their homes. the city says it plans to conduct more cleanups this year and they will focus on six of the homeless camps.

after months of complaints, the city of antioch started cracking down on boarded-up homes and apartments to make sure squatters are not living there. they are also responding to reports of excessive trash and debris at properties and making sure they are safe to live in. homes are deemed uninhabitable if they do have not running water, electricity or trash service. the end is near for an urban garden in san francisco. the nonprofit recycling center has been leasing city-owned land since 1974. city officials say the center is now obsolete and won't renew its lease. a recent court decision ruled in favor of the city. the neighborhood council now has until october 1st to leave the property. the city plans to keep the area for community gardens. a new poll shows support for a san francisco arena for the golden state warriors, but not necessarily from people who live near the proposed site. the warriors want to leave oakland and build a new

waterfront arena on piers 30 and 32. a phone survey of 556 san francisco voters show 68% support that new arena and the number rises to 80% once the project details are explained. but an online poll from neighborhood groups near the proposed arena found 49% of people oppose that project. well, setting the record straight, where officials now say the hottest place on earth is located. >> and two people are safe this morning after being rescued from point rays. where they got stuck and how they were able to get help. >> and in weather, the fog is back near the coast and bay this morning. coming up in about 5 minutes, the neighborhoods that will hit 90 degrees this afternoon and the one part of the state that is under a red flag warning for this afternoon.

. two people were rescued from a cliff in marin county. a man and woman used a cell phone to call for help after

they got stuck on a cliff at point rays, mcclures beach. they were approximately 250 feet up on the face of the rocky cliff when they were found. sonoma county helicopter rescue was called to save the two. they are said to be okay. west nile virus has hit california hard this year. now the marin county control district is reaching out to help the community understand the response to the problem. mosquito fest 2012 will kickoff at 11:00 this morning at the district office. the event is free and will feature exhibits with live mosquitoes and other bugs. organizers are hoping people will walk away with a better understanding of why the district sprays for mosquitoes. meanwhile, vector control is set to fog an area in san jose tonight to try to kill mosquitoes that carry west nile virus. the area is bordered by blossom hill drove, cottle road, and currie drive. now, the fogging comes after mosquitoes carrying the virus were found in that area. it's scheduled to start at 11:00

whether nakoula basseley nakoula violated probation with his role in producing the video. nakoula is on probation for bank fraud charges and is prohibited from using computers or the internet. that video sparked antiamerican protests in more than a dozen countries around the world, from the middle east and north africa, all the way to australia. these are images from lebanon, where protesters ransacked and set fire to a hardee's and kfc, as well as other western fast food chains. the state department says 65 embassies and consulates around the world have issued emergency messages about the violence. this morning, google says it has no plans to take down the controversial video from youtube, despite a request from the white house. google does say it is censors the video in india and indonesia and has temporarily blocked access to it in egypt and libya. the white house has asked google to look at whether the video

violates youtube's terms of service. google says the video is within its guidelines. and we have continuing coverage of the unrest around the world through the morning. you can also find more information on our website at ktvu.com. police are investigating two bodies found inside a motel. one was a 17-year-old girl who was a runaway. police say the second body is that of a 24-year-old man, possibly the girl's boyfriend. police say they both suffered gunshot wounds and they are investigating the matter as a murder-suicide or possible double suicide. a faculty member at the naval postgraduate school in monterrey is under arrest in connection with the death of his estranged wife. 69-year-old lawrence jones was arrested in los angeles this week on suspicion of homicide. the body of his 29-year-old wife was found by a hiker last friday. police are treating her death as a homicide. oakland city leaders are

soliciting the help of neighborhoods to clean up a prostitution hot spot. they are doing it by using so-called dear john letters. authorities are asking residents to take down license plate numbers of drivers possibly soliciting sex and giving those numbers to police. officers would then send letters to the address of the registered car owners, warning them to stay away. police say they are targeting several blocks along international boulevard near 17th street. >> i think they need to be doing more, because there's too many of them, little girls, grown women. >> and for the young girls out there, they need earnings you know? >> that's true. >> oakland police say they have already sent out 10 letters. dozens gathered to remember and celebrate the life of a store clerk shot inside a millipede today's 7-eleven. he was 67 years old, working the graveyard shift when armed robbers killed him last weekend. the community gathered last night to remember his smile and easy manner and to send a

message that this is not acceptable. >> that could have easily been my father. >> it angers me this kind of crap goes on in the community! one is too many! we need to stop the violence and keep this out of milpitas. >> neighbors are urging anyone with information to call police with information. 7-eleven is offering a $10,000 reward leading to an arrest and conviction. a man has been charged after attempting a drive-through burglary of an apple store in southern california. this happened last week inty mechanic la. surveillance video shows a car crashing there into the front of the store. three men got out of the car and started grabbing items off display shelves. the men then drove away. one was later arrested, but the others have not been found. if you're trying to preorder apple's new iphone 5, expect a delayed delivery time of up to two weeks. there have been so many preorders for the phone, delivery times have stretched

from one week to two weeks. the company began taking the orders just after midnight yesterday morning. apple is calling the response incredible and says the new iphone 5 unveiled wednesday is thinner, lighter, and faster. that news helped apple stock reach an all-time high at the close yesterday, at $691.28 a share, an increase of $8. well, expect to pay a little more if you buy something on amazon.com today. the nation's largest online retailer started collecting sales tax in california at 12:01 this morning. the sales tax from amazon is expected to bring in as much as $100 million for the state and local governments in california in just over a year. today is coastal cleanup day across the bay area. more than a thousand volunteers are expected to show up in san mateo county. they are expected to pick up hundreds of pounds of litter. today marks the 28th anniversary of the bayfront cleanup held by the city's department of public

do with the blast. chicago's week-long teacher strike is headed towards a resolution. >> i am pleased to tell you that we have in place framework around all the major issues that should allow us to conclude this process. >> looks like something we can figure out a way to work out, as long as we have the language to support it. >> both sides aren't saying much about the final agreement, but they are expected to spend this weekend working out the details. union delegates are expected to vote tomorrow on whether to call off the strike and return to class monday. well, a wisconsin judge struck down nearly all the state's controversial collective bargaining laws, saying the law is unconstitutional. public workers are elated by the decision, but governor scott walker's administration is already promising to appeal. governor walker signed that law restricting collective bargaining back in march of 2011 and supporters of it say it was done to balance the state budget and warn if the ruling isn't

overturned, that there will be a gap in budgets. cornell university has cut ties to adidas after hearing about the sportswear giant's questionable treatment of factory workers overseas. the president of cornell said yesterday that the ivy league school has grave concern about reports that nearly 3000 workers were left without 3 million in severance pay when an indonesian factory that produces some adidas items closed last year. the exciting first day of school ends with a frightening experience for one oregon kindergartner. now, the school sent 5-year-old taylor kaburnik to a day care rather than on the bus home, like his mother told him to. >> i didn't know who she was and i didn't know the car and i was crying for my mom. i thought my mom didn't know where i was. >> poor baby.

well, the mother was terrified when her little boy didn't come home, so she called the school and they figured out they accidentally sent him to the wrong place. the school issued an apology and promised it would not happen again. a san jose college student killed will be laid to rest. jordan murphy mahoney was a student at the university of arizona in flagstaff. she was riding her bike there last sunday when she was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver. that driver has been arrested and charged with manslaughter. make moneyy's funeral is at 11:00 this morning at holy spirit church in san jose. a vallejo marijuana dispensary is raided for the second time in four months. it happened last night at nature's love collective on the 300 block of tennessee street. police say its operator, 30-year-old darryl weeden of vallejo was arrested. authorities seized marijuana and cash in that raid. nature's love was first raided in early may. the trial for a vacaville

teen accused of stabbing a 13-year-old girl several times two years ago is scheduled to begin on monday. alexander sivantes, who was 14 at the home, allegedly broke into the victim's home. she was able to escape with her brother. he faces rape, assault and attempted murder charges. a california man is under arrest after he allegedly threatened his roommate with a running chainsaw. gary hays says he had just finished talking to his 63-year-old roommate, marvin daniels, and minutes later, daniels was chasing him with a revved up chainsaw. hays says he tried to get through his bedroom through the window. hays was able to escape through the front door and called 911. >> scared as i've ever been. it's the kind of crap you see on tv, not up here in auburn. >> hays wasn't hurt and believes the suspect has a mental illness and hadn't been taking his

medications. daniels is being held on multiple charges. police say the body found at a saratoga springs campground is a man in his early forties. campers discovered the body last night around 7:00 p.m. at a camp site on big basin way in unincorporated santa clara county. his identity is not being released. a san francisco firefighter who was battling cancer and the city about her sick leave says she has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support since she went public with her story. jeanette rivera said she applied for benefits under the city's catastrophic illness program after she used up all of her sick leave. that would have allowed her coworkers to transfer their sick leave time to her. but the city's public health department turned down the request, saying her current condition is not life threatening. >> it's gone viral, across the country.

people have gotten wind of the situation and they want to be helpful and want to be supportive. >> rivera's story quickly spread on breast cancer blogs and twitter. she says she intends to appeal the health department's decision, even as she prepares to undergo a double mastectomy in two weeks. police officers and firefighters are competing against each other in alameda today, but it is all for a good cause. it's in alameda county, the fire departments and police departments are participating in guns and hoses. money raised will benefit the george mark children's house and american cancer society. it is going to be at 3:00 this afternoon. game will be held at thrasher park in san leandro. tickets are $10, including a barbecue lunch and drinks. a $5 million solid gold jewel encrusted maltese eagle is now on display at johns grill in san francisco. it arrived yesterday under armed police guard. there it is. that eagle is now being displayed next to a replica of

the maltese falcon statue seen in the movie of the same name. you can see the two at johns grill from 2:00 until 5:00 today, and 3:30 to 4:30 tomorrow. the owner of the eagle statue plans to sell it and donate $1 million to breast cancer charities. flu season is officially under way, and even though most cases don't pop up until next month, doctors say now is a good time to get vaccinated. as usual, doctors are encouraging children, seniors, and those with health conditions to get the shot. the past two flu seasons have been relatively mild, which has many health officials concerned that people just won't go get their shots. this year's vaccine protects against three flu strains. the napa county health department will offer free seasonal flu shots to anyone 3 and older. clinics are set to begin wednesday and will run through november. for more information about how you can get your shot, contact the napa valley health department, or to find out if there are free clinics in your area, contact your county health

department. and the united states army is also protecting its service members from the flu. they have ordered nearly 2 million doses of vaccines for all soldiers and their families. the vaccines will be available sometime next month. the army expects to have 90% of its force vaccinated by december. more money is coming to california to help get diesel buses off the streets. the obama administration is handing out more than $8 million in grants to transit agencies across the state. $4.3million is headed to the metropolitan transit agency in san francisco. the obama administration wants to get rid of old buses and replace them with newcomb pressed natural gas buss that are more efficient. community leaders plan to hold a rally in san jose today to support new teenager drivers. according to the cdc, car accidents are the number one cause of death of teenagers in the united states, and the first year is the most dangerous. that's why state farm and other community leaders want them to stay safe. state farm is giving 14

snapshot, areas of fog, temperatures in the 50s. into the afternoon hours, clearing skies, a big temperature range. we'll take a look at the numbers in your neighborhood, also highlight the changes you can expect for the second half of the weekend. well, all eastbound lanes of interstate 80 are reopened now after a three-car crash overnight created an alert for the area. california highway patrol says it happened about 3:50 this morning near the willow avenue off ramp in hercules. traffic was at a stand still when a car came crashing into another, stopping that stopped vehicle, then it burst into flames. take a look at the damage there. the driver of that burning car fled. the five passengers of the speeding car were transported to the hospital with four minor injuries. one with a serious leg injury. chp says the driver of the speeding car has been detained. the san jose police department is investigating a fatal accident after a truck driver hit and killed an 8-year-old boy on a small motorized bike. that accident happened just before 8:00 last night on farm drive. police say the 8-year-old went into the roadway in front of the

truck. the child was not wearing a helmet. police say the truck driver is cooperating with investigators. well, we are following developing news from southern california. the filmmaker linked to an internet movie that has sparked violent protests in the arab world is now being questioned by law enforcement. the los angeles county sheriff's department cessna cowell la basseley nakoula was not arrested and went in for questioning voluntarily. nakoula has a prior conviction on bank fraud charges. authorities are looking into whether his role in producing the video may have violated terms of his probation. four americans died in attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya shortly after the video was posted. victims included ambassador chris stevens. eight people arrested, six officers injured in protests against the antimuslim film in sydney, australia. witnesses say up to 500 people marched through the streets before getting into a confrontation with police in front of the u.s. consulate.

police used pepper spray and tear gas to break up those protests. this morning, protesters have been cleared from central cairo after days of crashes with police over of the antiislammic video. a wall has been put up blocking the u.s. embassy after protesters threatened to burn it. one egyptian was killed in those protests. and here is a look at how the antiamerican protests have spread. demonstrators are taking -- demonstrations are are taking place in about 20 countries. the state department says 65 embassies or consulates around the world have issued emergency messages about the violence and they are cutting back on diplomatic activity. president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton honored the four americans killed in libya during a somber ceremony, marking the transfer of remains. n]♪

will be held for the sierra lamar fund during the second annual hot cars and guitars tour, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in hollister. tomorrow, there bill be a balloon release to mark six months since sierra was last seen. coast all cleanup today across the area and the world today. more than 1000 volunteers are expected to be in san mateo county this morning, picking up hundreds of pounds of litter. now, there are also several other events around the bay area. coming up at 8:30, alex savage will be live in san mateo to show us the progress volunteers have made so far. travelers flying in and out of san francisco international this weekend will likely face delays because of a runway closure. one of the two main run ways is shut down for safety improvements and that could mean delays of up to an hour. the work is expected to last through 8:00 a.m. monday, but that won't be the end of it.

there are more closures planned over the next two weekends. this morning, a shawman in peru and two others face charges in the disappearance of kyle nolan. he went on a spiritual release in the jungle region of peru last month. when he didn't come home, his mother traveled to the remote amazon region to find him. police joined the investigation and found nolan's body in a grave at the spiritual center. they say the shawmen con fees fessed to burying nolan after he died from drinking hallucinogenics in a tea drink. last night at nature's love collective on the 300 block of tennessee street, a dispensary was raided. its operator was arrested. authorities seized marijuana and cash in the raid. nature's love was first raided in early may. today, parents can plan to help clean up the damage left from a fire that burned part of a menlo park school. an early morning fire on

thursday destroyed a portable building at beachwood elementary that contained an office and a third grade classroom. now, we've also learned that due to a loophole in the law, the fire burned for hours before firefighters were called. under state law, portable classrooms are only required to have fire alarms that are activated manually. school officials say they are looking into installing an electronic alarm that can notify firefighters of a fire, even when no one is on school property. 18 army reserve soldiers have returned home to the bay area, after a year-long deployment in afghanistan. [ applause ] >> members of the 445 civil affairs battalion arrived at make net take airport yesterday afternoon. soldiers then headed to a special welcome home ceremony at the army reserve center in mountain view, where they were reunited with family. >> it is really exciting to have him home today and home with our

security after a vague threat was found scrawled in graffiti. this morning, we're learning people are returning to dozens of homeless camps cleared out by the city of san jose. earlier this summer, 150 people and 60 tons of trash were removed from 60 different homeless camps in san jose, but neighbors say the homeless are now coming back and the trash is once again piling up near their homes. the city says it plans to conduct more cleanups this year and are going to focus on six of the homeless camps. now, after months of complaints, the city of antioch is starting to crack down on problem homeowners and tenants. code enforcement officers are now checking boarded up homes and apartments to make sure there are not squatters living there. they are also responding to reports of excessive trash and debris at properties and making sure that those properties are safe to live in. homes are deemed uninhabitable if they don't have running water, electricity, or trash service. the oakland police department hopes to add 55 new officers to its force in the coming months. on monday, opd will begin its first police academy in four years.

staffing is one of the department's biggest problems. the force is at its lowest level right now in more than a decade. the department says it loses four to six officers a month to retirement or jobs in other cities. >> certainly, there was some pressure to really get moving and make this happen and we're just so fortunate that so many people stepped up and really help us and make this a reality. >> the goal is to have three police academy as year, but the city says that has not happened because of budget problems. this new class of 55 recruits came from a pool of more than 2300 people who took a written test in march. starting salary is about $70,000. >> well, new statistics from the oakland police department show that crime is up 12% in the city from a year ago. serious crime is also on the rise. it has risen 17% compared to last year. the air force is conducting around the clock training at travis air force base. it started late last night and will go through next saturday.

it includes firearm simulators, explosions, and amplified voice commands. most of that activity is going to happen at night. the base plans to open its northgate at 4:00 a.m. until next friday to support that increased traffic during training. sales of bay area homes have surged to levels not seen since before the recession. bay area home sales are at their strongest since 2006. there was a 14% jump in home sales last month compared to august of 2011, and purchase prices were up nearly 11%. some home buyers say the time to buy is now. >> the mortgage rates are incredibly low. we are thinking about expanding our family and there was a house that we just had to jump on. >> it's never a better time to buy if you have the financial resources to put the down payment. that's the key. >> some realtors say because of the low inventory, houses are not lasting long once on the market. well, if you're trying to preorder apple's new iphone 5, expect a delayed delivery time

or the internet. this morning google says it has no plans to take down the controversial video from youtube, despite a request from the white house. google does say it is sensorring the video in india and indy sunny and has temporarily blocked access in egypt and libya. the white house has asked google to look into whether the video violates the terms of service. google says the video is within its guidelines. the united states military says it is sending in an elite unit of marine special courses and drones to libya to help bring those responsible for killing the four american dip lats to justice. the u.s. has deployed an f.b.i. investigation team that is trying to track al qaeda sympathizers who are thought to have turned the been gaze demonstration violent. officials are also reviewing telephone records and computer traffic. libyan law enforcement agencies say some arrests have already been made. >>this morning, a look at the ruins of the consulate in benghazi, where the four

a san francisco firefighter who is battling cancer and the city about her sick leave says she has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support since she went public with her story. jeanette rivera says she applied for benefits under the city's catastrophic illness program after she used up all of her sick leave. that would have allowed her coworkers to transfer their sick leave time to her. but the city's public health department turned down the request, saying her current condition is not life threatening. >> it's gone viral, even across the country. east coast firefighters. people have gotten wind of the situation and they want to be helpful, and want to be supportive. >> rivera's story quickly spread on breast cancer blogs and twitter. she says she intends to appeal the health department's decision, even as she preparing to undergo a double mastectomy in about two weeks. a $5 million solid gold jewel-encrusted maltese eagle is on display at john's grill

identity. newark police are investigating two bodies found inside a motel. one body is a 17-year-old girl who was a run away from pleasanton. a maid made the discovery at the ez 8 motel on cedar court yesterday. police say the second body is a 24-year-old man, possibly the girl's boyfriend. police say both suffered gun shot wounds and they are investigating this case as either a murder/suicide or a possible double suicide. the trial for a vacaville teenager accused of stabbing a 13-year-old girl several times two years ago is scheduled to begin on monday. alexander cervantes who was 14 at the time allegedly broke into the girl's home in december, 2010. police say the girl was sleeping with her baby brother when both were stabbed several times. the girl was able to escape with her brother, while cervantes was sleeping. a california man is under arrest after he allegedly threatened his roommate with a running chainsaw. gary hayes said he had just finished talking with his 63- year-old roommate, marvin daniels, and then says minutes

later, daniels was chasing him with a revved up chainsaw. hayes said his roommate tried to get him through his bedroom window and then came in the house and chased him out. hayes got out through the front door and then called 911. >> it took a couple minutes, the kind of crap you see on t.v., not up here in auburn. >> fortunately hayes wasn't hurt and he believes the suspect has a mental illness and has not been taking his medication. daniels is now being held on multiple charges. cornell university has cut ties to adidas after hearing about the sports wear giant's questionable treatment of factory workers oversees. the president of cornell said yesterday the ivy league school has great concern about reports that nearly 3000 workers were left without $3 million in severance pay when an indy negs factory that produces some adidas items closed last year. chicago's week long teachers strike is headed towards a resolution. >> i am pleased to tell you

thousands of volunteers are fanning out across the bay area as part of an annual coastal cleanup effort. a large turnout is expected at rider park in san mateo. alex savage is there to check it out and he has a look at the work being done. >> reporter: well, good morning. we're in ryder park in san mateo. this is bay front cleanup day. huge event for this city and things are well under way. look off over that way, in that direction you can see folks are out there. on the rocks there collecting trash and trying to make the bay look that much more beautiful. this event they are expect about 1000 people here. later on today, all these volunteers coming out to collect trash and litter and recyclables. roxanne murray is with the city's public works department. >> hey. >> what do you expect today? >> we're expecting again 1000 volunteers. we are cleaning up san mateo creek, san mateo lagoon, and our shore lines. all along ryder park. >> ditz amaze you ever the stuff that's found?

check this out here. this is some of the stuff that already, just this morning, has already been found in our bay. >> and this is an early start to the morning. generally this whole area by the end of the day will be completely filled with some pretty unusual finds. we found a robot one year. found a canoe covered in barnacles. it's amazing. a vacuum cleaner filled with fish. we got the fish out back into the water. pretty unique things you find. >> do you feel like you can make an impact? one day. >> one day makes an impact. last year we collected 8000 pounds of recycling and 5 tons of garbage. these two dumpsters will be filled and also during the rest of the day we'll be going along the shore line picking up heavy stuff that couldn't be brought over by hand. the good news is we've picked up less last year than the year before and less than the year before that. each year we are finding less and less. that is a good thing but we find more than we want to. >> i know this year also you're trying to make this event even more green. obviously trying to clean the bay up but you're making the event more green by asking people to bring their own

much of the royal family's dismay and in the wake of potential legal action, an italian gossip magazine plans to publish topless photos of the duchess of cambridge kate middleton. the magazine says it will have a 26-page spread on monday. the topless pictures were taken while kate and william were at a private estate in southern france last month. the popular french magazine hit

news stands yesterday with the photos, and today, an irish magazine followed with a two- page spread of those same pictures. changes are coming to disney world in orlando, florida. for the first time in history beer and wine will be offered at the park. it will be served at the new be our guest french themed restaurant in the new fantasy land. the beer and the wine will only be available during dinner. and reservations are already being tab, even though that restaurant doesn't open until november 19th. the new fantasy land opens december 6th, and it's the largest expansion in that park's history. back here if california, disneyland is donating a piece of its matter horn ride to preserve its history. the national roller coaster museum has accepted two vehicles from the ride. disney recently completed a major renovation of the matterhorn and got new cars in june. the previous ones had been used since 1978. a sign from california screaming and disneyland's california adventure park was also donated.

the pleasanton harvest festival is celebrating 40 years. the event kicked off yesterday and will run through tomorrow. it started as a small community marketplace in san francisco, where artists gathered to sell products. now 8 shows are held in california, arizona, and nevada. money raised from this year's event will go to the oakley raiders, a youth sports organization. the show is also supporting the alameda county food bank. unique boats will be in the san francisco bay this morning. it's part of the 17th annual kaiser permanente international boat festival. organizers say it's the large northwest the united states with 120 teams and 3500 paddlers. besides boat racing, the event features cultural performances, and activities for the entire family. the event runs until 5:00 tonight. it will pick up again tomorrow morning. a lot going on in the bay area this weekend, and you can check out a list of the events on the weekend extra tab at ktvu.com. >> my brother competed in that

other things people have pulled out of that water. what vegetables they got? >> we'll show you the other stuff. check this out claudine. they pulled a bone out of the water, and then i guess this is some sort of a costume, i guess is what we're thinking. maybe a halloween costume. then too you see this mattress pulled out a short time ago. what they do here is something called the catch of the day. they will award a prize later on today for the most unusual item pulled out of the water. we're at rider park in san mateo for beach cleanup day. part of the coastal cleanup day across southern california. a huge crowd of people out here today. they are expecting about 1000 people to come out here, pull trash and it willer and recyclables out of the bay and make it look that much more beautiful. aaron here, you brought down a whole crew from st. matthew's catholic? >> here in san mateo. >> brought a whole bunch of kids down. why do you have them come down here? what do you tell them about how important this is? >> the school likes them to be focused on the community and giving back. this is just one simple way to be aware of your environment

and how you're recycling and also take care of the places you like to play. we like to have a hands on experience. it's a great way for them to come out and learn how they can get involved. >> and they really do enjoy it. you would think it's work, right? >> right. >> they don't want to cleanup at home but they'll come down here. >> they certainly will. it's great. the vendors are out making it a special day and they're having fun. >> thank you very much, erin. i appreciate that and appreciate the work the kids are doing. again they're expecting a big crowd out here. assembly man jerry hill, we saw him a short time ago make his way to the roxy. he will be cleaning up here. this is all organized by the city of san mateo's public works department. it's one of the largest events in the bay area they say. but of course california coastal cleanup day happening all across the state, cleaning up the water ways, the beaches and all of the important areas along our water fronts here in the bay area. this event here, ryder park in san mateo and it will be going until noon today. and they would like anyone who would like to to come out and

volunteer. live this morning in san mateo, alex savage. ktvu channel 2 news. in overnight news, a fiery crash on interstate 80 forced several lanes to be shut down. it happened before 4:00 near the willow an offramp. a cash crashed into another vehicle that was already stopped causing it to burst into flames. the driver of the burning car got away but was later taken into custody. the five passengers of the speeding car was taken to the hospital. investigation is under way in san jose this morning after a truck driver hit and killed an eight-year-old boy on a small motorized bike. the accident happened just before 8:00 last night on farm drive. police say the eight-year-old went into the road in front of the truck. the child was not wearing a helmet. police say the truck driver is cooperating with investigators. we're following developing news from southern california. the film maker linked to an internet movie that has sparked

violent protests in the arab world is being questioned by law enforcement. >> nothing to say at all? >> do you have any regret? about producing the film? anything to say about what's -- >> as you can see he didn't make any comment as he walked into that los angeles county sheriff's department vehicle. nakoula basseley nakoula was not arrested. police say he actually went in for questioning volume tearily. authority -- voluntarily. authorities are looking into whether his role in producing the video may have violated his terms of probation on bank fraud charges. his attorney is asking for privacy. >> they are keeping his young children prisoners in their own home because they're afraid to come out. if you'd disperse and let them get out to do what they need to do we'd appreciate it. when we know more about what we're going to do in this matter, we'll advise you. >> four americans died in an attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, libya shortly after the video was mosted, including ambassador chris stevens. the united states military says it is sending an elite unit of marine special courses

and drones to libya to help bring those responsible for killing four americans to justice. the u.s. has deployed an f.b.i. investigation team trying to track al qaeda sympathizers who are thought to have turned the benghazi demonstration violent. officials are also reviewing telephone records and computer traffic. libyan law enforcement agencies say some arrests have already been made. president barack obama continues to speak out about the attacks in libya. at 9:15, hear what he had to say in his weekly address about the men killed in the attack. eight people were arrested and six officers injured in protests against the anti- muslim film in sidney, australia. [ crowd screaming ] >> witnesses say up to 500 people marched through the streets before getting into a confrontation with police in front of the u.s. consulate. police used pepper spray and tear gas to break up that protest. two people died and at least 40 were injured when protesters stormed the compound housing the u.s. embassy in tunisia. protestors looted and burned

buildings and put up an islamic flag. the embassy was not staffed at the time of the attack. anti-american protests have now spread to about 20 countries from the middle east to north africa, all the way to australia. here is a look at a map where demonstrations have taken place. the state department says 65 embassies or consulates around the world have issued emergency messages about the violence and they are cutting back on diplomatic activity. this morning, a shaman in peru and two other men are facing charges in the death of a bay area teen. ingor goswell says her 18-year- old son kyle noel 11 went on a spiritual retreat in peru's jungle reason last month. when he didn't come home she traveled to the remote region to find him. police found the investigation and found nolan's body in a grave at the spiritual center. they say the shamen questioned to burying noel 11. they say he died after drinking

a tee made from hallucinogenic plants. tomorrow marks the six month anniversary of the disappearance of sierra lamar. volunteers will once again search for the 15-year-old. earlier this week organizers said they're spending their regular mid week searches so they can focus more on the search efforts saturday. also today a fund-raiser will be held for the sierra lamar fund during the hot cars and guitar tour. it's in holster from 9 to 6, and home there will be a balloon release to mark six months since sierra was last seen alive. today parents plan to help cleanup the damage left from a fire that burned part of the men although park school. an early morning fire on thursday destroyed a portable building at beach wood elementary that contained an office and third grade classroom. we've also learned due to a loophole in the law the fire burned for hours before firefighters were actually called in. understate law, portable classrooms are only required to have fire alarms that are

activated manually. school officials say they are looking into installing an electronic alarm that can notify firefighters of a fire, even when no one is on school property. travelers flying in and out of san francisco international this weekend will likely face delays because of a runway closure. one of two main runways is shut down for safety improvements, and that could mean delays of up to an hour. the work is expected to last through 8 a.m. monday, but that won't be the end of it. there are more closures planned for the next two weekends. and a lot of events happening this weekend. one of those happening right here is the dragon boat festival. the race is shaping up, starting off this morning, and you can pick out if you are heading to the bay any time soon, bundle up. with the fog out there and temperatures on the cool side. here is the forecast for today throughout the day. for treasure island, you'll notice as you come in, a nicer perspective here. at 9:00 this morning, basically now, mid 50s. by 12:00 only back up to 60

degrees. skies will be partly sunny by 4:00, 65. i talked about the fog, here you can get the latest coverage with the clouds off shore, hugging the coast, and even moving back into the bay. and even a few patches inland if you can see towards concord and livermore reporting partly sunny skies. current numbers are in the 50s, but a few neighborhoods are already sneaking back up to the 60s. antioc reporting mostly sunny conditions, 63. san francisco, 53, and san jose at the airport in the upper 50s. for today at the coast, some patchy fog this morning at 10:00, and then skies becoming partly sunny into the afternoon hours. right around the bay, patchy fog at 10:00, we just showed you that with the live camera. and then into the afternoon hours, mostly sunny skies but as we go right into the afternoon, you will notice an increase in the wind speed. a bit of a chop on the bay waters this afternoon. not too much wind now but winds approaching 20 miles an hour. multi clear skies inland at 10:00 this morning. maybe a patch or two of fog out there and then by 3:00, sunny

skies and the readings on the warm side, upper 80s, to right around 90. the forecast highs this afternoon, a little bit warmer compared to yesterday's ayes. santa rosa, 82 degrees, and napa right around 83. fairfield, 88, and these numbers, we'll cool things off a little bit for the second half of the weekend. today will be the warmest day of this weekend. oakland tops out 73. lower 90s towards antioc and brentwood. san jose, some fog this morning, hazy sunshine this afternoon, 81. these temperatures will check in right about 3:00 later on today. san francisco, 68 degrees, and if you are heading to the coast for today, definitely bundle up. especially for this morning. not too much of a temperature boost this afternoon. the readings in the upper 50s to lower 60s. here is a look ahead, your five- day forecast with your weekend always in view. and temperatures cool off a little bit for sunday. so for the second half of the weekend, we shave off a few degrees and just very minor weather changes from monday, tuesday, wednesday, clearing skies, coastal spots in the 60s, inland neighborhoods into

good saturday morning. time now 9:50, and looking out towards the south bay in san jose, we have been talking about the clouds. they're lifting right now, a forecast high right around 80 this afternoon. and we have an update on the wildfire burning near the famous getty center in los angeles county. firefighters say they will not have the flames under control until tomorrow.

they had previously said they thought it might be this morning. but that's because they are dealing with a very high temperatures and low humidity there. the getty center is closed as a precaution and firefighters are providing protection for a number of homes in that area. the fire has burned 90 acres, but so far it has fortunately not caused any structural damage. the taliban is claiming responsibility for an attack on a british base in southern afghanistan that killed two u.s. marines. the taliban says the attack is in response to the anti-islamic film that's responsing unrest across the middle east. and also because prince harry is stationed at the base. the prince was not injured in the attack at camp bastion. the identities of the marines haven't been released. 18 army reserve soldiers have returned home to the bay area after a year-long deployment in afghanistan. [ cheers ] >> members of the 445 civil affairs battalion arrived at san jose's airport yesterday afternoon.

the soldiers then headed to a special welcome home ceremony at the army reserve center in mountain view, where they were reunited with family. the soldiers spent a year doing reconstruction projects in afghanistan. in election news 2012, president barack obama is getting ready to campaign more later this week, but right now he is putting his focus on four americans killed at the u.s. consulate in libya. >> as we mourn their loss, we must also send a clear and resolute message to the world. those who attack our people will find no escape from justice. we will not waiver in their pursuit, and we will never allow anyone to shake the resolve of the united states of america. >> well, the president made those comments this morning in his weekly address. the president's staff says the events in labia aren't going affect his -- in libya aren't going to affect his travel schedule. republican presidential challenger mitt romney is also expected to continue with his campaign schedule this week. romney is scheduled to make stops in colorado, california,

texas, and florida. at an event in ohio, romney condemned the anti-islam film that has prompted protests around the world but said a lack of leadership from the president is also to blame. well, a new poll finds strong support for campaign spending limits. more than 8 in 10 americans in the new poll from the a.p. and the national constitutional center support limits on the amount of money groups can give to influence elections. a 2010 supreme court decision removed limits on independent campaign spending by businesses and labor unions. the supreme court found campaign spending to be constitutionally protected as a form of political speech. well, expect to pay a little more to make a purchase on amazon.com today. the nation's largest online retailer started collecting sales tax in california at 12:01 this morning. the sales tax from amazon is expected to generate as much as $100 million for state and local governments in just one year. the n.h.l. is just hours away from its second lockout in years.

so far owners and players have failed to find common ground for a new labor deal. the contract actually expired just about 20 minutes ago. and many fans are wondering what that means for the upcoming hockey season. the last lockout was during the 2004, 2005 season, when the entire season was cancelled and players lost a year of pay. they would also make the n.h.l.'s fourth work stoppage since 1992. a new poll shows support for a san francisco arena for the golden state warriors, but not necessarily from people who live near the proposed site. the warriors hope to move from oakland and build a water front arena on piers 30 and 32. a phone survey of 556 san francisco voters shows 68% support for a new arena. it rises to 80% once the project details are explained. but an online poll from neighborhood groups near the proposed arena found 49% of people were actually opposed to the project. it's 9:19. the west nile virus continues

well, if you're looking to visit the hottest place in the world, you won't have to travel very far. death valley national park in california is officially the hottest place on earth. the world meter logical organization panel found that the record set in 1922 in libya was not correct. and now researchers say the correct spot was actually recorded in 1913, in death valley. the temperature was a little more than 134 degrees. >> if you ever wanted to visit iceland you might be able to do it for free. iceland is trying to draw in more first-time visitors during the off season.

and iceland air is allowing stop-overs of up to seven nights at no additional charge on flights between the united states and more than 20 europe destinations the air force is conducting around the clock training at travis air force base. it started late last night and will go through next saturday. it includes firearms simulators, explosions and amplified voice commands and most of that activity is going to happen at night. the base plans to open its north gate at 4 a.m. until next friday to support increased traffic during training. west nile virus has hit california hard this year, and now the marin county control district is reaching out to try to help residents understand its response to the problem. the agency is holding mosquito fest 2012 this morning at the district office. the event will feature exhibits with live mosquitoes and other bugs. organizers are hoping people will walk away with a better understanding of why the district sprays for mosquitoes. vector control is set to fog an area in san jose tonight, to

combat the mosquitoes that carry west nile virus. that area is roughly bordered by blossom hill road, loma prieto drive, cobble road and curry drive. the fogging comes after mosquitoes carrying the virus were confirmed to be in the area. it's scheduled to start at 11 p.m. so far in california, there have been more than 90 reported cases of the west nile virus in 18 counties. five of those cases have turned deadly. contracosta county officials announced the first bay area case earlier this week and a second case yesterday. officials say this is the worst west nile season nationwide in more than a decade. san francisco city officials are celebrating the opening of a new playground in the mission neighborhood today. that playground at 19th street and valencia and guerrero is reopening after a 7.5 million dollar renovation. the new playground has new play equipment, a new synthetic turf play field and tennis and basketball courts. are you looking for a job?

you could have a chance to work at great america for the upcoming halloween haunt season. from 10 this morning until 4:00 this afternoon a job fair is being held at great america at the human resources office located on agdon road. they are looking for people to be monsters or other characters but you must be at least 18 years old or older to apply. the town of clayton will officially greet their latest olympians with a warm welcome, and special access to the city. residents will gather for a sell braer to parade honoring bronze medal olympians christian ipson and kara colver. they will also receive something no other clayton resident has been given. and that is a key to the city. kohler won the bronze in a rowing event and ipson in synchronized diving. the parade starts today at 5 p.m. lots of outside activities today. it is 9:20. let's head to mark to see when things might warm up for folks. it's kind of a bring a jacket morning.

that has sparked violent protests in the arab world is questioned this morning by law enforcement. the los angeles county sheriff's department says the man went in for questioning voluntarily. authorities are looking into whether his goal in producing the video may have violated the terms of his probation. president obama and secretary of state hillary clinton honored the four americans killed in libya yesterday, during a somber ceremony marking the transfer of remains. [ music ] >> the president met privately with the families of those killed, and said their sacrifice will never be forgotten. secretary of state hillary clinton also remembered bay area native chris stevens. she says she asked stevens to serve as ambassador to libya because she knew the u.s. needed a strong leader to engage with the revolutionaries who overthrew moammar gadhafi. >> he was known not only for his courage, but for his smile. goofy but contagious.

for his sense of fun, and that california cool. [ music ] >> stevens is a graduate of peidmont high school, u.c. berkeley and u.c. hastings college of law. >>this morning we're going to look at the ruins of that consulate in benghazi, libya, where ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed. you can see the ash and soot and debris inside there, and a note that reads libya is so important was also found. investigators say it appears stevens became separated from his guards in the chaos of the attack and died of smoke inhalation. in overnight news, san francisco police are investigating a homicide. it happened in the bay view district early this morning. officers say they responded to a report of a shooting just after 1:30 on ociola lane and lasalle avenue. police haven't released details on the victim or gunman. highway one in san mateo county is open this morning after a natal crash shut part of it down.

it was reported just before 11:30 last night. no word on a cause. a college student from san jose killed in arizona will be laid to rest. 21-year-old jordan murphy mahoney was a student at northern arizona university in flagstaff. police say he was riding her bike they will last sunday when she was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver. that driver has been arrested, and charged with manslaughter. mahoney's funeral is at 11:00 this morning at holy spirit church in san jose. police are investigating two bodies found inside a motel. one has been identified as a 17- year-old girl who was a run away from pleasanton. a 45áeud made the discovery at the ez 8 hotel on cedar court yesterday. police say the second body is that of a 24-year-old man, possibly the girl's boyfriend. police say both suffered gun shot wounds and they are investigating this case as either a murder/suicide or a possible double suicide. police say a body found ott a saratoga springs campground is a man in his early 40s.

campers discovered that body last night around seven p.m. at a campsite on big basin way which is in unincorporated santa clara county. investigators haven't yet determined the cause of death and his identity has not been released. faculty member at the naval post graduate school in monterey is now under arrest in connection with the death of his estranged wife. 69-year-old lawrence jones was arrested in los angeles this week. the body of his 29-year-old wife was found by a hiker in san bernadino county last friday. police are treating her death as a homicide. dozens gathered to remember and celebrate the life of a store clerk shot inside a mill pedes 7-eleven. muhammad reza sadeghza was working the grave yard shift when armed robbers killed him last month. the community gathered to remember his ready smile and easy manner and to send a message that this is not acceptable in their neighborhood. >> it could easily have been my own father.

and to see the community come together like that. >> it just angers me that this kind of crap goes on in the community. one is too many. we need to stop the violence and keep this out of milpitas. police are still searching for the gunman. 7-eleven is offering a $10,000 reward leading to an arrest and conviction. oakland city leaders are soliciting the help of the neighborhood to clean up a prostitution hot spot. they are doing so by using a so- called dear john letter. authorities are having residents take down license plate numbers of drivers possibly soliciting sex, and will give those numbers to police. officers then send the letters of warning to the address of the registered car owner, warning them to stay away. police say they are targeting several blocks along international boulevard in 17th street. >> i think they need to be doing more, because this is -- this is too many of them out here. little girls, grown women. >> and for the young girls out there, they need some help.

>> oakland police say they have already sent out 10 letters. a san francisco firefighter who is fighting with the city over sick leave says she has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support since her story went public. jeanette rivera says she applied for benefits under the city's catastrophic illness program after she used up her sick leave. that would have allowed her coworkers to transfer their sick leave time to her. but the city's public health department turned down the request, saying her current condition is not life threatening. >> it's gone viral, all across the country, east coast firefighters, people have gotten wind of the situation, and they want to be helpful and want to be supportive. >> her story quickly spread on breast cancer blogs and on twitter. rivera says she intends to appeal the health department's decision even as she prepares to undergo a double mastectomy in less than two weeks. one man has been charged for a drive through burglary of an apple store in southern california. and you can watch it all happen

on surveillance video. there it goes. this is last week in temecula. nice car being used for that. three men got out of the car and started grabbing items off the display shelfs and the men drove away. one was arrested but they're searching for the others. >> if you are trying to preorder the new iphone 5, expect a delayed delivery time of up to two weeks. there have been so many preorders for the phone delivery times have stretched from a week to two weeks. the company began taking those orders just after midnight yesterday morning, and apple is calling the response incredible. the new iphone 5 unveiled on wednesday is thinner, lighter and faster. more money is coming to california to help get diesel buses off the streets. the obama administration is handing out more than $8 million in grants to transit agencies across the state. 4.3 million is headed to the metropolitan transit agency in san francisco. the obama administration wants to get rid of old buses and replace them with new compressed natural gas buses.

lots of sunshine inland towards antioc, concord and livermore. numbers just updated, mainly in the 50s. warmest locations, look at this. antioc already 70 degrees. that's a good sign. they will easily be a warming backup to the 90s this afternoon. san jose 58, and san francisco, 53 degrees. forecast headlines for today, morning fog, it will be warm inland. tomorrow just a little cooler and the extended, a nice forecast with mild to warm temperatures. so, today the warmest day of the upcoming weekend. that means temperatures inland approaching the lower 90s. this very weak weather system moop moves in on sunday for the second half of the weekend. and we will shave off a few degrees for tomorrow. forecast highs this afternoon, a little warmer compared to yesterday's highs. that means a few or more 9th 90s to report. santa rosa right around 82. fairfield in the upper 80s and here you can pick out the lower 90s towards pleasanton, livermore and around brentwood as well. san jose, 81 degrees by 3:00, and san francisco in the clouds

lanes blocked because of a crash there. we are hearing there are four vehicles involved, and drivers should expect delays there, trying to clean it up right now, but it does take some time. they issued that s.i.g. alert just after 9:00 so they have been working it for a while. we'll continue to follow that and we'll bring you more information on that backup as we get it. a recap of the top stories this morning. an investigation is under way in san jose after an eight-year- old boy was hit while riding his bike. that accident happened just after 8:00 last night on farm drive. police say the eight-year-old went into the road on his motorized bike, and went right in front of that truck. the child wasn't wearing a heel schmidt police say the truck driver -- helmet and police say the truck driver is cooperating. the film maker linked to an internet movie that has sparked violent protests in the arab world is being questioned by law enforcement. the los angeles county sheriff's department says the man went in for questioning voluntarily. authorities are looking into whether his role in producing that video may have violated

the terms of his probation. >> and today is coastal cleanup day across the bay area. more than 1000 volunteers are expected to show up in san mateo county, and that is where k.t.v.u. reporter alex savage is live for us this morning, and alex, how are those cleanup efforts going so far? >> reporter: well, they are unearthing some unusual finds in the bay this morning. this is just one of them here. this is one of two bones that folks have found in the water this morning. they brought the items down here to be collected, obviously. there's a mattress here, there's a snowboard over there that someone left in the bay. take a look off in the distance. you can see a few hundred people. volunteers are out here, collecting trash along the shore line. this is part of the beach front cleanup day. we are at ryder park in san malt ohio. they're expecting about 1000 people to come down and take part in this event. last year the folks collected about 5 tons of trash. they pulled it out of the bay. in talking with these folks, people are coming down with boy scout troops, girl scout

troops. a lot of community groups come down here, a lot of kids taking part this morning. and a lot of people say it's really a shame just how much trash is being pulled out of the bay. >> it's sad how people just don't care, and litter our land like this. but hopefully, we can teach our young ones that -- not to do that, and maybe it will be better, in how many years when these guys are adults walking along these trails. >> a lot of stuff out there. >> reporter: california assembly man jerry hill was down here as well taking part, collecting trash along the shore line. this event here, one of the largest in san mateo county. maybe one of the largest in the bay area. part of the overall california coastal cleanup day. events taking place along beaches and water ways all across the state. and here, the items that people find, the strange items they pull out of the water, they do something here called the catch of the day. and organizers essentially will vote on what the strangest items were that were pulled out of the water.

the winners receive gift certificates. they make it fun for everyone taking part. the event out here goes on until noon today at ryder park. alex savage, ktvu. two people are safe this morning after getting rescued from a cliff in marin county. a man and a woman used a cell phone to call for help after they got stuck on a cliff above mclures beach at point ray's. they were approximately 250 feet up on the face of that rocky cliff when they were found. sonoma county sheriff's helicopter was called in to grab the 2. hoisting them one at a time to safety. the pair are both ok. the trial for a vacaville teenager accused of stabbing a 13-year-old girl several times two years ago is scheduled to begin on monday. alexander cervantes who was 14 at the time, allegedly broke into the girls' home in december, 2010. police say she was sleeping with her baby brother when both were stabbed several times. the girl escaped with her brother while cervantes was sleeping. a california man is under

arrest after he allegedly threatened his roommate with a running chainsaw. gary hayes says he had just finished talking to his 63-year- old roommate, marvin daniels. minutes later, daniels was chasing him with a revved up chainsaw. hayes said his roommate tried to get into his bedroom through the window, then came into the house and chased him around. hayes was able to escape through the front door and then called 911. daniels is being held on multiple charges. >>this morning, we're learning about homeless residents who are apparently returning to dozens of homeless camps cleared out by the city of san jose. 150 people and 60 tons of trash were remove have had 60 different homeless camps in san jose this past summer. the neighbors are saying the homeless have started to come back and the trash is once again piling up near their homes. the city is planning to hold cleanups for the rest of the year and will focus on six particular homeless encampments. a california sea otter that survived an oil spill is

well, flu season has officially begun. even though most cases don't pop up until next month, doctors say right now is a good time to get vaccinated. as usual, doctors are encouraging children, seniors and those with health conditions to get that shot. the past two flu seasons have been relatively mild which has many health officials concerned people aren't going to get their shots. this year's vaccine protects against three different flu strains. the napa county health department will offer free seasonal flu shots to anyone three and older. clinics are set to begin wednesday and will run through november. for more information on how you can get your shot, contact the napa valley health department, or to find out if there are free clinics in your area contact your own county health department. sales of bay area homes

have surged to levels not seen since before the recession. bay area home sales are at their strongest since 2006. there was a 14% jump in home sales last month compared to august, 2011. and purchase prices were actually up nearly 11%. and some home buyers say this is the time to buy. >> the mortgage rates are incredibly low. we were thinking about expanding our family, and there's some -- there is a house that we just had to jump on. it's never a better time to buy if you have the financial resources to put the down payment. that is the key. >> some realtors say because of the low inventory, houses are not lasting long once they get on the market. unique boats will be in the san francisco bay this morning, all part of the 17th annual kizer permanente boat festival. organizers say it's the largest in the united states with 120 dragon boat teams and 3500 paddlers. besides that dragon boat racing, the event features cultural performances and activities for the entire
