marching east on market street. we count 250, probably more people who are marching right now this afternoon. all day long there have been celebrations going on in san francisco to mark the day. it has been different groups to san francisco today from oakland, east bay, south bay as well to be here to market the anniversary. much of the activity today is centered on bank of america plaza. that is where the occupy san francisco movement began a year ago in san francisco. right now folks left it bank of america building, marching east on market street, towards the ferry building. we spoke to some of them today about how they choose to market the anniversary and what the movement has meant for them. >> we have to be here, speak out, let the government know what we want. and people like this, me, we

need run for office. >> reporter: you can see people are marching, hundreds of people marching down market street, it has been a peaceful day of activity throughout the entire day here in san francisco. no arrests so far that we know and police have been escorting the protesters although it is tying up traffic. so far no problems as they celebrate the anniversary of occupy wall street. david stevenson, ktvu channel 2 news. >> and ktvu's christien kafton is live at bank of america where protesters gathered earlier. >> reporter: yeah. there was a assembly here, you can see most of the protesters on the move right now with david stevenson throughout san francisco's financial district. they left behind a skeleton crew here. earlier part of the demonstration, one by one,

protesters game here offering stories about how the system is geared against the 99%, telling stories about mortgage companies unwilling to work with them. there is a bigger political effect this movement had. occupiers marched earlier today but before they did we spoke with a scientist who said the occupy movement and the tea party came out of worry foul eking 2008. -- following 2008. bringing issues like income and social inequality to the forefront. >> we brought two words to the floor, we are not afraid to say class exists in this country and capitalism is a failed system. >> reporter: we spoke with one who said the occupy movement lost a lot of steam because of police crack downs and media

focus on the more flaky elements of elements of the movement. along with david stevenson, ktvu's amber lee will have the latest on the occupy movement coming up tonight on the 10:00 p.m. news. live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu channel 2 news. >> in new york city police arrested more than 100 activists marking the anniversary today. >> hundreds took to the street around the financial district in manhattan. 146 people were arrested, the demonstrations were mostly peaceful. >> and more details now on the occupy movement. protest started with a small group near wall street. within weeks hundreds of people

joined. the protesters established a medical center. by winter police cheered out most -- cleared out most. join the conversation on facebook, we are asking viewers what they think about the occupy movement one year later. "like" ktvu channel 2 news and tell us what you think. after 18 months on the job the san jose police chief announced he is retiring. police chief chris moore delivered the news this afternoon. his decision comes amid a wave of violence and there has been layoffs and frustration in the department over the pension program. >> i have been disappointed that we weren't able to get things done that i think -- i wish we had. >> the 54-year-old has been with the department for 27

years and plans to leave in january. >> leaders in san jose will hold two meetings tomorrow to address the growing violence. they are holding a crime prevention meeting for neighbors in east san jose at 6:30 p.m. at the ymca. half hour later the city counsel will go over possible solutions, that meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. at city hall. the man accused of kidnapping his two children was back in court today. his case was postponed till october 4. he said he took the kids because they were being accused by their mother. she denies the allegation. he is being held on $500,000 bail. the search for a missing bay area man moves to nebraska. coming up, the last sighting

there. a suspect is in the hospital after police shot him during tense moments in front of a home. it started after 8:00 a.m. this morning when police received a call of an armed man. when police arrived the suspect said he was armed and suicidal. police say he refused to cooperate and that is when officers opened fire. he was conscious and talking before being taken to the hospital. a man obtained video that he says shows what happened when his wife's car got smashed between two muni vehicles. ktvu's lorraine blanco is in the city with the video and the husband's plea to officials. >> reporter: august 3a car pulls up behind a muni bus. it stops and a trolley crashes into it.

she was in the car, sandwiched between two city vehicles. according to the police report the operator stated the white car cut in front of me. i hit the breaks but it didn't stop. he doesn't buy it. he went looking for evidence and bingo, he looked up and saw that surveillance camera showing the car stopped before the trolley was in the lane. he says muni needs to do better maintenance on the vehicles. >> if it keeps happening somebody will be dead. >> reporter: i talked with a spokesperson, he says there are several lawsuits pending so they can't comment. he says his wife is in

treatment. live in san francisco, lorraine blanco, ktvu channel 2 news. a flight from san francisco was one of two jets grounded at john f. kennedy international airport in new york today following a threateningphone call. the caller -- threatening phone call. the caller said there were hijackers hiding in the wheel wells. they were searched and passengers were questioned but nothing was found on either plane. stanford police are warning students about a groper on campus. a student was grabbed last week. this follows two other similar incidents in august. oakland school officials say all middle and high school students will be required to watch the new film bully. last week san francisco students saw the movie. it is a documentary that follows 5 kids who face

bullying and focuses on the families of two victims who took their lives. the city counsel is considering banning the sale of rat poison. the measure calls for businesses to stop selling deconand other rat poisons -- decon and other rat poisons. >> today is constitution day. they tried to register people to vote. two groups seeing increased numbers are senior and ethnic minorities but polls show younger voters are still not registering in large numbers. www.ktvu.com has complete election coverage, including the latest on the residential race. governor jerry brown signed

a bill aimed at presenting agencies from hoarding money. it comes after the parks department kept money in a special account. the bill signed today requires the controller's office to compare notes on how much money is in special funds. last week contra costa county required all employees to get flu shots. now this county is doing it too. the goal is to protect the most vulnerable patients and adds the number of workhorse get it is too -- workers who get it is too low. why police say a student felt forced to withdrawal money from this atm and restaurants'

happening now, more live pictures from the ground here from our live view camera. these are occupy protesters who are marching up sacramento street, it looks like what they are doing is making a big circle and it appears they are heading back to the bank of america building which is located at kearny and california where they held a general assembly this evening. this is creating traffic problems as they close streets

during the march. there are at least several hundred protesters and we are not aware of any arrests as david stevenson reported, police are following them, keeping an eye on the situation but everything so far has been peaceful. the family of a missing man is in nebraska searching for any clues in his disappearance. relatives of charles dowd passed out flyers this afternoon and are hoping someone saw him. he was taking the train to see his son. >> he was excited about, you know, the trip. and this is just a shocking -- shocking turn of events. >> his panelally says the conductor last saw him -- his family says the conductser last saw him being confused. university of california at berkeley students are on alert

suspended the trial against google's digital library. google has already scanned 20 million books and says it complies with copyright laws. san francisco based gap named the new creative director. the company says her experience includes developing and launching a line for h&m. the board of guide dogs and the california restaurant association teamed up to better serve the state's seeing impaired. they created new standards for interacting. for example, letting a blind aperson -- letting a blind person know where things are

happening now, another live look in san francisco. we have been following this live for you for the past hour and a half. this is a demonstration going on marking the first anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. right now a couple hundred protesters are on montgomeryistry in front of a wells fargo -- montgomery building build -- montgomery street in front of a wells fargo. a person is speaking and we have reporters with this crowd watching the movement and we will bring you new dales as -- new details as we get them. some a's fans got up early to buy tickets for the playoffs. this was the scene this
