booths will soon be electronic. no human toll collectors. ktvu alex savidge joins us live to let us know when this will happen and what it lean means for drivers. good afternoon alex. >> reporter: good afternoon. the folks here at the golden gate expect there will be an adjustment period for drivers. once this new electronic system is up and rink the message for -- their message for folks coming here slow down and hang on to your cash. the golden gate is going all electronic and the roll out will begin in december. 32 toll taker positions are being eliminated here. once the electronic system is in place they can use fast track or set up what is called a pay by play account. there are be payment locations will go up through the the area. they believe this new system will ease the flow of traffic. >> it does create customer conveniences. here at the golden gate bridge

we anticipate seeing improvements in the flow of traffic during our peak periods of congestion. >> reporter: another reason the golden gate is going all electronic is the financial savings. the bridge district expects to save $19 million over the next eight years. but the switch over of course could create some confusion especially for out of town tourists who are expecting a human toll taker. >> the hardest market for us to communicate this to is the tourist market. and you know it's a global market. we know that we have tremendous amount of visitors coming to the golden gate bridge from around the globe we are working with san francisco travel association, with visit california. we will be reaching out globally to the news media. >> reporter: if someone does drive through the toll plaza without using one of the electronic payment methods cameras will snap their license plates and they will be mailed a bill. all of the toll rate will

remain the same even with the new system in place. testing on it will start in december for this all electronic system. toll takers will remain in their booths until february. that is when the new will be fully implimented. telling drivers not to stop of course they may get the hint when they pull up and there is no toll taker inside that toll booth. live this afternoon at the golden gate bridge in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. amazing art project with lights is coming to part of the bay bridge. we've just got new details on this late this morning. we'll have that for you coming up in 14 minutes. alameda county firefighter is recovering from a nasty cut to his leg after an early morning fire at a downtown taco ria. they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of the restaurant. the injured firefighter was cutting a hole in the roof to

get rid of some of the folk when he cut his leg with a circular saw. firefighters say it was a difficult fire. >> this type of building has a basically fake facade that goes around the outside of it. plus get into the back room it was kind of difficult with heavy smoke within the restaurant itself. >> the restaurant owner told us he had no idea how the fire started while the back storage area was destroyed, there was not as much damage to dining area of the restaurant. the owner has insurance and is optimistic he will be able to open in a couple months. presidential candidate mitt romney is doing damage control after the liberal san francisco magazine mother jones posted a secretly recorded video from a romney fundraiser. in one comment he described supporters of president obama as victims. >> 47% that are with him that believe they are victims who believe the government has a responsibility to care for

summer olympic's and the president's busy schedule opinion protestors are standing their ground. most protestors dismantled their tents and left around the 6:00 a.m. deadline but about a dozen stayed. police are watching them to make sure they don't bring their tents back. vendors also don't want to see the protestors return. one who came to set up this morning had a confrontation with protestors. >> it's a struggle in the best of times and coto come around the corner after enduring four months of them here it breaks my heart. and i've spoken with so many of the other vendors they feel the same way. >> the protestors had marched in the financial district top mark the first anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. san jose used to be none as the safest small cities in the u.s. but there is growing concern about increasing crime there. tonight there are two meetings

on this issue that is ktvu ann ruben tells there is a new twist now that san jose police chief has announced he is resigning. >> reporter: that is right. in san jose the statistics show there has been an increase in crime and increase in police response time. so tonight there are competing meetings to address the issue. now this comes one day after police chief chris moore announced his retirement and while the search is on for his replacement, there is also a search for suppose louis to the -- solutions to the crime problems here. they will hold a steady conference tonight to talk about moving more officers to patrol and improving more overtime. and they will talk about what can be done to move forward in addressing short staffing. they say they need to educate the public on how to protect themselves and their property. both groups say that the chief impending departure doesn't mean that work on safety issues will stop. >> it doesn't really change

anything. what we need to do to deal with the public safety issues are the same whether the chief is a chief or we have a different chief. there is a lot of things the department is doing and working. the community will have a chance to hear about some of the things that have happened tonight. >> response times to all types of calls have increased significantly. including response times to you know murders and battery of gang violence. all those response times are are up. means it's taking our officers longer to get there. >> reporter: now the police officers association meeting will take place at the east village ymca at 6:30 tonight. the study session will be here at city hall at 7:00 p.m.. live in san jose ann ruben ktvu channel 2 afternoon news. >> thank you. the highway patrol believes a nevada man that lost control of his truck and boat trailer may have been driving under the influence. authorities say 46-year-old richard marshall veered off

novato boulevard just before 7:00 a.m.. they say his truck rolled and slammed into a tree. the boat ended up in a creek and firefighters were called to extract the driver with the jaws of life. he was semi conscious and transimportanted -- transported to the hospital. >> we can't say alcohol is a factor. we are looking into it as an option. >> police say marshall suffered spinal injuries and needed surgery. the accident happened on a curve that has been the scene of previous fatal accidents. authorities say a bomb threat that forced the evacuation of the hayward courthouse was a hoax. the alameda county sheriff office says someone called the courthouse about 9:30 this morning claiming there was a bomb. police evacuated dozens of people from the hall of justice while they searched. no bomb was found and everyone was let back in after about an

fire at a play structure is being called suspicious. at 11:00 last night they find the structure fully engulfed in flames. this was a brand new structure recently built for children in the neighborhood. this fire comes after handful of small fires on thursday and friday that investigators are calling arson. those fires were set by transients in the area. san francisco is taking action after more scams occurred over the weekend that target senior citizens especially older chinese women. new at noon ktvu tara moriarty joins us live to explain how these scams work and why education is the best way to fight them. tara. >> reporter: these are the fliers that have been circulating throughout san

francisco. they ares at the senior centers around the city. da trying to get the word out. this is the second of three community meetings led by the da office. this one particular one in the sunset district of san francisco is home to someone that was targeted in the scam. >> we know there are bad people that are trying to take advantage of you. >> reporter: district attorney george gascon says his office knows at least 408 cases of elder scams. recently police arrested three women for praying upon older chinese women. authorities say there is a second ring out there. >> it's very disturbing because the most vulnerable in our community are being targeted. people cannot defend themselves. >> reporter: now the police department made a movie simulating what happens. the women convince their victims to put all of their money or jewelry in a bag in order to ward off bad spirits.

when they return the bag it's full of rocks. but they don't know this until later. >> a lot of our chinese people they don't have an account in the bank. they just have all the money under the bed. they are so superstitious. and they believe in they give all the money to those people who are trying to tell them how they can get rid of the sickness or how they can get rid of the problems. and we told them that it's not true. >> reporter: now the women the asian women who are involved in this scam speak cant these specifically. and if you run across something like this you are urged obviously to contact police. the first community meeting was held in china town. the second if the sunset district. the last one will be held october 3rd out in the bay view. tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. rally was held outside the

on wednesday to head to montreal to see his son. he disappeared between denver and chicago. family members last spoke to doud on friday. california state university trustees will vote today on a tuition hike that would kick in voters reject a state tax initiative in november. the university trustees committee vote today and the full board is expected to vote tomorrow. if approved tuition would go up 5% in january. but only if proposition 30 fails. that would mean in state under graduates would pay an additional $150 a semester. new expansion plans are in the works for san francisco's moscone center. 200,000 square feet of convention space would be added to the popular site. that is a photo that was just unvailed. the $2 billion in business has been lost because the moscone

center is too small. the property damage is expected to cost $500 million. it has been in the works for about eight years today san francisco could take a major step to create a green energy plan. the board of legislatures will consider legislation that would put $19.5 million toward the clean power sf program. it's designed to help secure contract with shell energy that would provide renewable power for a premium. san francisco would become the second in the state to create this type of program. ma kin county was the first. about 90 minutes ago a new york artist offered details on a special bay bridge art installation that will help celebrate the span's 75th anniversary. this is animation of the propose zed bay lights prompt for the western span of the bridge. 25,000 energy efficient lights will light up the bridge for

you will be able to see from san francisco to treasure island. not oakland to treasure island. thank you. there is a lot of excitement in monterey over the sightings of great white sharks. reportedly a great white shark that is 20 feet long was seen near the mouth of the pajaro river. it was about 200 roads from shore. the shark refound foundation photographed great whites on friday and saturday. there are an estimated 220 get white sharks along the central coast. there is something new in smart phones and a bay area company is right at the heart of it. and $7 million in gold you may be surprised to learn where it was found. lots of prepaid cards
