released this surveillance video in hopes of catching this man. you see him go to the backyard then opens the home through an unlocked door. police say the burglar took electronic items as well as some jewelry. now there is a reward in this case and anyone with information is asked to call redwood city police. the alameda sheriff's department is investigating a bomb threat that forced the evacuation of the hayward hall of justice. someone called in the hoax around 10:30 this morning, they said there was a bomb at the courthouse at amador street. no bomb was found and everyone was let back in after about an hour. a san francisco music student's prized chello is stolen and the thieves were caught on camera. david stevenson live in the city and it was more than the instrument that was taken. >> reporter: let mel te -- let me tell you, police say the break-in happened here between

two concerts. that's when police say the suspect walked in and began casing the school. san francisco police investigators are calling them bonnie and clyde. that's after this well-dressed couple entered the conservatory of music and allegedly stole a student's cello. >> we have them on video trying lockers and committing a burglary it were the couple checked classrooms until they found one that was not secured. >> it was very violating to see people handling my instrument that i've had for so long. >> reporter: 23-year-old adam young has owned the handmade cello for half his life. he plays publicly to help supplement his school scholarship. young says thieves stole more than his instrument. >> reporter: i carry a binder full of music in the back of my cello case. it has all original

arrangements that i've done for my quartet to play. >> reporter: it's the second recent major theft at the school. in may of last year this man was arrested for stealing a student's $23,000 french violin out of a practice room. school officials and young's friends and family are putting out an online alert about this latest theft. young has a message for the couple seen carrying away his cello. >> i really need it back. it's a part of me. >> reporter: investigators want anyone who recognizes this couple or had information on this theft. there is a reward being offered for the return of the cello. david stevenson, ktvu. oakland police are searching for a suspect after a woman was shot and critically injured outside an elementary school. this all began around 90 minutes ago. a school district spokesperson tells us the woman was shot while waiting in her car with a child. children were being dismissed at the time of the shooting and

the school went on lock down for about 15 minutes until police determined the area was safe. we just talked to oakland police and they tell us that the woman is at the hospital now with life threatening injuries. in san francisco, some occupy protesters are standing their ground hours after a police deadline is passed. most protesters dismantled their tents. but about a dozen stayed. police stayed as well to make sure they didn't bring their tents back. remember we showed you live here at 5:00 how the protesters marched yesterday in the financial district to mark the anniversary of the occupy wall street movement. an alameda fire fighters is recovering from an injury to his leg suffered while fighting a fire at a restaurant. firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of the restaurant. the injured firefighters was hurt while cutting into the roof to release some of the

smoke. firefighters say it was a difficult fire. >> this type of building it has a basically a fake facade that goes around the outside of it plus also getting into the back room, it was kind of difficult with heavy smoke within the restaurant itself. >> reporter: firefighters suspect the fire began in a dumper that was inside the back room. the back storage area was destroyed but the dining area was not badly damaged and the owner hopes to reopen in a couple of months. a contra costa county judge has dismissed a lingering drunk driving charge he did so today against a southern california assemblyman. a jury acquitted him of dui and could not reach a verdict on the second charge involving the blood alcohol level. the defense says hernandez had two glasses of wine hours apart. the judge said she dismissed the second charge in the interest of justice. more fall out today in

afghanistan from a controversial anti muslim fill. - - film. an attack by a 22-year-old woman killed 14 people. she drove a car full of explosives into a mini mart there. u.s. officials say that no americans were killed. many were south africans who may have been mistaken for u.s. citizens or members of nato. the renewed concerned about federal building here. the alarming discovery about those in charge of ensuring the safety of federal workers. the white house says it sees no sign that the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya was -- a planned attack. but the investigation is still going on on the attack that killed chris stevens and three

other americans. the libyan president has said that foreign militants plotted that attack for months. the government in russia may block access to you tube if the website refuses to take down that anti islam film that has sparked the violent protest like this one in indonesia yesterday. there's a fear that the movie could also cause unrest among russian muslimless. prosecutors have asked a court in moscow to outlaw the film calling it extremist. google owns you tube and says it will not block the film. the teachers voted overwhelmingly today to go back to their classrooms. the vote was not on a union contract officer itself but on whether to continue the strike. the contract must be submitted to a vote of the full union membership before it's formally ratified. teachers walked off the job nine days after keeping 200,000 students out of the classroom.

the comedy movie the internship with vince vaughn and owen wilson started working tonight. the internship is said to be released sometime next year. it's only september but kohl's is already gearing up for the holiday season. the department store says it's hiring more than 52,000 temporary workers to help holiday shoppers. that's 10% more workers than last year. kohl's says those temporary workers could work up to 20 hours a week. >> reporter: on wall street, stocks ended up today. the dow picked up 11-1/2 while the nasdaq and s & p dropped

slightly. american airlines sent pink slip notices. they offered bonuses to employees who quit voluntarily. so far about 1,800 flight attendants and ground workers have accepted the officer. officials in contra costa county have been working to prevent the spread of west nile virus. mosquito spraying will begin in antioch. the county's mosquito and vector control district is also asking residents to drain any standing water in their homes. the fog was here this morning big time. it started out cool then you look behind me. you're not going to see fog there, that's diablo. but if you're looking out, you are not seeing any fog because it's cleared away. it will work its way back in tonight. but with the fog gone, temperatures got up to the 50s. we can check out the wind buoys just offshore. winds are gusting to 21 miles per hour out of the northwest.

something like this, right. so the winds overnight are going to continue northwest and they will usher that fog right back to the coast. but it's just sort of, telling of the seasons when you look at the coast this time of year. the fog vaporizer goes away. as you get closer to the fog season, the fog is less of a player in the forecast. we're also seeing cool to milder temperatures inland. this morning, the fog the marine layer was pretty deep and it got into the livermore valley. up into napa. lots of mid-70s. temperatures today about the same as yesterday. maybe a little bit warmer in some spots. maybe a little cooler in others but basically the same. that's how it goes tomorrow too. your overnight lows tonight will be like they were last night. this pattern is very subtle and it changes until we get toward the end of the week. 46 tomorrow morning in santa rosa. 48 in napa. these temperatures are cool. you noticed it in vallejo.

chilly, right. typically we're due in the upper 60s when you get into the late summer months. we're dealing with temperatures that are on the chilly side. a little change tomorrow. tomorrow feels much like today for your wednesday. for the weekend, friday and saturday, temperatures click up a couple of degrees. we will talk about that as we come back at 5:45. right now i want to show you, see this area right here. this is what i'm tracking. you see that rotation. that's just a weak low pressure center. when it blows in it blows out that inversion. this morning it pushed all that fog inland. this afternoon it actually did away with the inversion and everything vaporized. that's why it cleared at the cost. 62degrees as you move through the bay area tomorrow through the san francisco area mid-60s. low 70s where there were 80s. when you get up to where there were 90s there'll be temperatures in the mid-70s and low 80s. we will talk about the subtle changes and then we will talk about that increase in temperatures that's coming toward the end of the week.

been postponed for two men charged with beating bryan stow. the judge says that the defendant's attorney needs more time to prepare. stow was permanently disabled and recovering from brain damage. a san francisco 49er was involved in a series car crash friday in santa clara county. the highway patrol says that linebacker alden smith was a passenger on a bmw that swerved off the road to avoid from hitting a deer. alcohol was not factor in the crash. san francisco set off a community warning about a scam that is targeting elderly chinese women. >> we know there are bad people out here that are trying to

take advantage of you. >> district attorney george gascon held a community meeting in san francisco. his office has investigated at least 40 cases of elder scams in the city. >> it's very disturbing because they are the most vulnerable in the community that is being targeted for this. people that cannot defend themselves. quite frankly people that are unwilling to come to the police station because they are ashamed. >> reporter: gascon showed a video ha shows how the scam worked. the thieves convince the victims to put all of their money and jewelry in a bag in order to ward off bad spirits. the thieves then take the bag away. and when they return the bag they caution the owner not to open it. when they do open it they find that it is filled with rocks and that all of their valuables are gone. >> they are so superstitious and they believe they give all that money to those people who

are trying to tell them how they can get rid of the sickness or how they can get rid of the problems. >> josephine moss says that the problem is compounded because the chinese elderly do not have bank accounts and they keep all their money at home. there is now a second ring at work. the entire board of a fund raising foundation for the college of marin resigned today over allegations of misuse scholarship funds. the college trustees and the foundation is in a dispute regarding funds. college officials told ktvu an external audit of the funds is on the way. the california wine harvest is in full swing with

after announcing his retirement for early next year, san jose police chief chris moore still has a full plate and that includes public hearings on crime and police priorities starting soon. ktvu's robert handa in san jose tonight with what happens with a looming change now at the top. robert-- >> reporter: well we are at san jose city hall where inside one of those public hearings will start soon. one with a retiring police chief who must still reassure the public the department is still reeling with crime. he has only until the end of january to get the job done. >> i have four months left, there's still a will the of work to do. i am going to continue literally working until the last day. >> reporter: one of the main problems is to address two meeting tonight reassuring citizens something is getting done about increasing crime. one person he will have to

leader beyond a police chief to respond to those? absolutely. >> reporter: the council will address those issues in about an hour. live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. the search for a retired san francisco firefighter who disappeared on a train ride took a new turn today. the family of 69-year-old charlie dowd now believe he may have fallen from an amtrak train on its way from emryville to chicago. today's dowd's son and daughter began organizer a search of 169 miles of train track through colorado and nebraska. as we first told you here, dowd who's from san mateo was traveling to montreal to visit his son. he was last seen when a conductor saw him acting --

earl littler this year doctors at napa state hospital returned results to the judge that said he was malingering or faking having alzheimer's. the unidentified man was hit by the train june 21st just before 5:00 p.m. on east fifth street. authorities said he was crossing the tracks in a wheelchair when it happened. now these sketches show his appearance from the front and from the side. he's described as a white man between 60 and 75 years of age. about 5'5" tall weighing about 130 pounds. if you know who he is you are asked to contact the san mateo county coroner. the highway patrol says a man from novato who lost control of his truck may have been driving under the influence. authorities say 46-year-old richard marshal veered off of nevato boulevard. they said the truck rolled and

slammed into a tree and that the boat ended up in a creek. firefighters had to use the jaws of life to pull marshall out of the truck. we're told he suffered spinal injuries and needed surgery. no one else was hurt. a new survey shows many iphone users spend an awful lot of money fixing the devices. warranty companies fair trade say americans have spent $5.9 million fixing their broken iphones. 15% have done it more than once. for the second time in -- for the second time in a year a man had to be rescued after base jumping in auburn. raymond arietta parachuted and got stuck in a pine tree. rescuers had to call in a pg & e boom truck. police sited him for taking part in an unsafe activity. last october we told you about another base jumper who was rescued from a tree after he jumped from the bridge.

the 750-foot tall bridge is california's highest ban. there's concerns tonight about safety at buildings here. jackland feld reports about the safety. >> reporter: an alarming new report from federal auditors says the fpf isn't doing enough to make sure workers and visitors are safe. >> it's roughly 5,000 federal buildings in the last two years have not had their security assessments updated. >> reporter: the agency operating every year with $1.3 billion. but it still can't assure everyone they are safe. the agency spent $35 million to verify weapons trainings and certifications of thousands of contracted guards. only to abandon the program.

never been tried here in the bay area and ktvu's sal castaneda is here to explain why this is something every single driver needs to be aware of, sal. >> reporter: frank for 75 years has taken cash here at the golden gate bridge plaza. that's about to change. imagine driving through here and not stopping. many already do it with a automatic pay system. what about if you want to pay cash? you won't be able to here starting in february toll takers will be gone and all tolls will be collected electronically by a new $3.2 million system using several cameras. officials say it will save millions. >> we expect to see a savings $19 million over an eight year period. >> reporter: there will be three ways to play, two pay by plate programs that will record a person's license plate and three at a pay center the

cool. look at everybody else. redding is 94, sacramento almost 90 degrees right now. but we are much cooler because of that deepened marine layer which is fog and low moisture. the drop in temperature happened yesterday. we'll be headed to the bay area weekend slightly warmer especially on friday and saturday. the weather forecast more of the same. this low pressure center sitting there. that's the reason for the cool down yesterday and that's the reason for the continued mild weather. it sits here, make it is marine layer really quick. will it make the marine layer really fat. once you lose the inversion the fog is gone. we're going to see more of that in the next few hours and that fog should come rushing back again. i expect the same thing tomorrow. fog shows up for the morning, we're all starting cool. the afternoon sun comes out. okay it's breezy out on the
