on ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. live in oakland, mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. also three women were injured when someone fired shots into their car. we have video of the scene across from mills college. it happened about 11:30 p.m. they told a witness the shots came from someone in a car next to them. 5 young women were in the car. two were shot. another was hit in the eye by flying glass. coming up at 5:30 p.m., family will tell us about one of the victim's injuries and how police are responding on the street. we are learning more about the fire at a gas station in martinez. it could have been a lot worse. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar is live to explain why the station didn't explode and

turn into a fire ball. >> reporter: frank, as accidents go, this one was a freak. >> reporter: a car leaving the pump backed into it, starting a fire that destroyed it and several car. the manager saw it. >> pushed the gas more on full power. >> reporter: he saw it on the news. >> and we have got so many safety guards that i thought it was impossible. >> reporter: all gas stations have automatic and manual shut off and cut off valves. the underground tank has the same. there is one or more switches near the pumps and a master one in the cashier's booth. there is still 5-10 gallons of gas up here above the ground.

violent behavior, what your nose may be an indicator of. family and friends are mourning the death of a man who died in mexico. a large wave hit him. he was 72 years old. he worked as an engineer. his wife survived. the space shuttle endeavor took one of the final legs of its three day victory lap across the country. it hitched a ride today on the back of a 747. it passed low over the home of former arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords and her husband mark kelly who was the last person to fly the shuttle. the space shuttle endeavor is expected to fly around the bay area tomorrow morning. ktvu's health and science editor john fowler is live to tell us where the best spots

another sluggish month for job growth after they reported 382,000 new applications for unemployment benefits. although that is down from the week before the earlier report spiked because of hurricane isaac. as for the four week average, 378,000. that is up 10,000 compared to a month earlier. on wall street today, the jobs report left stocks mixed. the dow is up 18 to 13,596. the nasdaq is down 6 at 3,175. the s&p is down 0.79 to 1,460. we have new video of a water main break that snarled traffic this afternoon. it ruptured 5 hours ago near drake high school. that shut down the eastbound lanes. crews are working to repair it. the water district expects the

mortgage rates dropped to a new record low. freddy mac reports the average for a 30 year is 3.49%. that is down from 3.55% last week and the 15 year is down to 2.77%. it was 2.85% last week. the rates can make it very attempting to -- tempting to buy a home. but is it better to own or rent? ann rubin has more.

>> reporter: frustrated with renting? >> it goes up. and it is unfortunate. >> reporter: according to a new study right now it may be cheaper to buy than rent. it looked at data nationwide, in oakland it is 41% cheaper to own. in san jose owner saved you 31%. she says in san jose that amounts to hundreds of dollars a month. >> total payments less than deduction for write off, 1900 and a house would be 2500 plus a month to rent. >> reporter: this is a big change from last year. the study found lower mortgage rates and higher rents are factors. >> rents keep increasing, the renters will look to home buying. >> reporter: one problem, in the bay area there is low supply and high demand.

over a measure on campaign spending. 44% oppose proposition 32 which bans unions from using payroll deductions for political uses. 18% are undecided. voters were asked about the influence that they have in california politics. 47% said they have too much influence. 32% said the right amount. 17% said it was about the right amount. a group is warning about cyber attacks on banks. the group is siting credible intelligence. the group raised its threat from high to elevated. it is urging banks to do the same. it comes from the financial services information sharing. it was created by a u.s. government order in 1999.

the struggling u.s. postal service is trying a new strategy to make more money. the postal service is making volume discount deals with advertisers encouraging them to send out more mail but a company is trying to help customers thin out their junk mail. they let people pick and choose what they want to receive. >> if it is things you want then the value will be greater for the mailers as well. to look at this where we are only serving the mailer and not the recipient is a short sided approach. >> the postal service says this push could bring in more than $100 million over the next three years. people in san francisco may have seen smoke behind acandlestick park this afternoon. -- candlestick park this afternoon. there was a small brush fire.

it was a one alarm fire with one engine. no word on how it started. our chief meteorologist bill martin has been telling us about the fact we are having the cool weather is a blessing. >> really is. fire season. when we get our first fire conditions, we haven't seen anything like this. the fog has been thick so it has been cool and moist. where is the fog? the marine layer is there. we have been winds, the fog has been blow out by the low pressure. when the fog gets deeper we cool down and better air quality? the marine layer deepened out. so this morning you had fog in most bay area neighborhoods but then this morning the fog went away. fog needs a lid on it to form.

pictures of what happened. >> reporter: frank, family here that hospital say they are afraid to be shown on camera because the people responsible still haven't been caught. >> reporter: ktvu video after someone opened fire on a car full of young people. two sisters were shot. a third girl was hit by glass and bullet fragments. it happened last night near mills college. family members have been at the hospital throughout the day. >> this is my cousins, right? i hope they be all right. >> one is in intensive care unit. might be paralyzed. >> reporter: they want the violence to end. >> stop the violence, increase the peace. >> reporter: oakland police and officials announced they took 560 guns off the streets this year but they acknowledged the city doesn't have a crime plan.

mother of the 11-year-old boy shot tells us what happened and also how that boy is doing after going through four surgeries. the city of milpitasicize considering whether to outsource the police department. they voted last month to send out a request for proposals. they are looking at having the sheriff's department take over. >> i saw our officers understand an area but they knew where the criminals were within the houses, within the city. i don't see how somebody outside the city can have that knowledge. >> the city says it costs $200,000 a year for each officer's pay and benefits. san francisco police are looking for a convicted felon who became a fugitive after he was found guilty.

a jury convicted him on 13 counts. he and an accomplice are four men involved in a mortgage fraud scheme two years ago. he was free on bill and wasn't in court but the district attorney says he took off sometimes after being notified of the verdict. >> one of the individuals in this case has been convicted of murder, right? so i think it is safe to say to the public and to other law enforcement agencies they need to treat this individual with care and be careful. >> as the district attorney said another of his accomplice is serving a life sentence. wireless internet company unwired planet hit google and apple with patent lawsuits. they said google and apple violated 10 of its patents.

a new analysis indicates a lot of organs could be used for transplats but are being discarded. 4700 people died last year while waiting for a kidney

transplant. 2600 kidneys were discarded after they were recovered from people who died. as of december 1 mills health center will not have an emergency room. they are shutting it down because it doesn't meet earthquake standards but patients can still get care at mills peninsula. the problem it is it is too expensive to retrofit. officials will host a public hearing on these changes next thursday. the zoo took us on a tour today to show us how four tigers from texas like their new bay area home. >> we got that welcome from one of the two lions there that zoo but these are the new kids on the block. we told you about four tigers,

breaking news from the north bay here. news chopper 2 is over the scene of an accident. there was a car that went into a building. the interception has been closed down, roped off and a number of police vehicles surrounding a building. we haven't been able to get a good look that vehicle that is inside the building but one person is being freed from the

vehicle. this is happening at a time when the farmers market is just about to start. the farmers market starts at 6:00 p.m. we don't know how many people were involved but one person is being freed and there is a car into the building on fourth street. we will stay on top of this and have more information coming up at the beginning of ktvu channel 2 news at 6:00 p.m. in 15 minutes. the nhl lock out shows no signs of ending soon. ktvu's janine de la vega tells us, as bad as that is for san jose, could be a blessing for the new hockey team. >> reporter: well, frank, the sharks were supposed to play- doh games here but now -- to play two games here but now they have been canceled. while the lock out is bad news it could benefit others.
