doors and windows sealed and extra precautions are going into place tonight in yosemite national park. all to contain the deadly hantavirus. ktvu's robert handa is live where visitors are flooding into the park despite the disease. robert? >> reporter: summer is ending so the park is seeing visitors coming in while it is still dry but there is also work activity going on that is all about hantavirus. >> reporter: the last days of summer are drawing crowds to yosemite national park and filling campground to capacity. a month ago there were cancellations because people were worried about hantavirus linked to these campers. today we heard concern but not fear. >> there was a scare from a mouse or, you know, rodent, and, you know, thought about it

but it is like, well, you know. >> reporter: the national park services is taking measures to reduce public exposure to deer mice. >> we don't believe that there was any increase risk of exposure to hantavirus to those people. >> reporter: no increased risk to people who put their food in the lakers? >> correct -- >> reporter: lockers? >> correct. . >> the hole is very small but glad they are doing it. >> reporter: they are also sealing up doors and windows and doing what they can about the deer mice population. >> we have been doing some trapping to reduce numbers. we have been placing traps near places where they might get into food. >> reporter: they told us the

health department is considering a survey of employees to discuss exposure to hantavirus. robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. officials say there are new signs west nile virus is spreading. in antioch, concord and brentwood. and the second human case was confirmed last week. they have been fogging for mosquitos but right now there are no new plans to fog. >> an update on developing news where a thorough fair reopened after a water main break. it broke near drake high school this morning. the main is 80 years old. they had to close the eastbound lanes for 5 hours to make repairs. the detour slowed traffic to a

crawl in that area. an 11-year-old boy is recovering tonight from a gun shot wound even though a bullet is still lodged in his body. we spoke with the boy's sister this morning about the gunfire that struck the child while he was sleepic. ktvu's mike mibach joins us now with the moment the boy realized he was shot. >> reporter: the boy's family says he was shot in the stomach, chest area, he is expected to survive and listed in fair condition here at the hospital in oakland and police say the such is on for the -- the search is on for the person who fired. >> reporter: 16 bullet holes scattered throughout the home. >> i felt like bullet holes all over the wall, my mom crying. >> reporter: it was before 1:00 a.m., a bullet hits this frame, the boy is asleep and realizes

he was shot. >> calm down. calm down. >> my brother came, blood dripping. >> this hurts so much. >> reporter: the mother says her son was transported to to the hospital. >> he had four surgeries in his stomach. he had a blot of blood. >> reporter: her son was shot once and he is alert and asking questions. >> he will be fine. he is asking for his brothers and and sisters. why him? why that happen to him? >> reporter: 9 people were inside the house but just the boy who was hit. >> this particular home was the target of some type of action. >> reporter: the 11-year-old is a popular student in his class. >> a lot of people are pulling for him and supporting him. >> reporter: the family says it

does not know why it would be targeted. the mother tells ktvu doctors decided to not remove the bullet from his liver, at least for right now. live in oakland, mike mibach, ktvu channel 2 news. >> that wasn't the only violence last night. there was another shooting that left three women injured. the family said one of the women may never walk again. ktvu have surveillance video of the shooting scene near mills college after 11:30 p.m. last night. police say five women were in the car, including two sisters who were shot. another victim was hit by flying glass. police have no suspects. >> oakland's street violence comes 24 hours after officials announced they took 560 guns off the streets this year. today police acknowledged there is more work to be done but say

they are making progress. >> we have with out teams, officers and community outreach teams working in these areas to reduce gun violence and crime. >> family of the victims shot near mills college called for an end to the violence. firefighter is at home recovering after suffering a heart attack while fighting a fire. frank ryan was hospitalized on august 30 after he collapsed while battling a church fire. firefighters never left his side and even raised money to fly his family to san jose to help with his recovery. the space shuttle endeavor began its three day ctorlap across the country today. here is what it looked like this afternoon in arizona. it passed ovthe home of gang green -- over the home of former arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords and her husband mark kelly who was the last person to fly the shuttle.

and we are getting new details about the space shuttle endeavor's fly over the bay area tomorrow morning. we told you at 5:00 p.m. it may be delayed because of the weather. we have more details now. the shuttle will fly over krasacramento at -- fly over sacramento at 9:30 a.m. and then to the golden gate bridge. another party will be held at the space and science center in oakland and ktvu will have cameras tracking the shuttle. we hope to carry it live on mornings on 2 weather permitting. if it is delayed we will stream it live on www.ktvu.com and on our mobile app. coming up, ktvu's chief meteorologist chief meteorologist bill martin is tracking the fog and he will update us in 10 minutes. new poll shows california voters are divided on a ballot

more now on the breaking news. we have been telling you about the suv that slammed into a restaurant on fourth street. these are live pictures from news chopper 2. you see the back end of the suv. join us on the phone is an officer from the police department. there has been confusion about the person who was injured and what happened. can you set us straight on what happened? >> the woman that was injured was a pedestrian. she was walking on the sidewalk. the restaurant was closed for the day. when the car jumped the curb it struck her. trapping her inside under the car, against the wall. she was transported to the hospital, she has major injuries -- major injuries. she is 78 years old and i don't

restaurant. one pedestrian was hit, trapped under the car. taken to the hospital. 70-year-old woman and suffering major injuries tonight. it was a close call for people filling up at a gas station when a car slammed into a fuel pump. it was breaking news last night. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar is live there now where he talked to people today who say they ran for their lives. tom? >> reporter: it was a rare and freak accident, one woman filling up her car found it too real. >> reporter: this video show as car having left the gas pump, darting back into it, starting a fire. >> i heard a crash. i turned around. it was a quiet moment at the moment and i saw a car in the tank, the gas tank. right next to me. >> reporter: she got into her car to move it. >> then i saw fire. and there were people

screaming, run! so i decided to run. and leave the car. the manager next door ran outside to look. >> and right after that it had started to really burn and we heard popping and cracking. >> and then there was an explosion and i assume that was the car behind my car. >> they did seem to get it shut off quick enough. >> reporter: 5-10 gallons caught on fire above ground. >> i was shaken by it. i will envision what happened. >> reporter: this is one of the most rare fires gas stations experience. >> i haven't had to go to the gas station yet. i will be hesitant. >> a study says with respect to
