[ laughter ] we have clear skies and a little bit of fog forming. overall today it will be sunny to mostly sunny day and it will be warmer. especially inland. we'll have updates on the endeavour viewing coming up shortly. here is sal. steve, good morning. highway 4 getting busier in antioch and pittsburgh but not so bad in bay point. also the morning commute on westbound 24 another live picture of traffic looking good between walnut creek and oakland. let's go back to the desk. san francisco police cleaning up graffiti at one of their stations this morning. the vandalism happened to protest a police shooting. alex savidge is out there at the police station with more. >> reporter: angry protestors zeroed in on the mission police station last night. vandalizing this building. we'll show you video we shot an

hour ago as city crews came in here and cleaned up the graffiti. someone spray painted the word killers on the front door. protestors were upset about a shooting a couple hours before. several dozen protestors marched through the mission around 10:30 last night. this was all part of a spontaneous demonstration. at one point they surrounded the police station facing off with officers in riot gear. during the protests someone spray painted the police station as well. that demonstration was in response to a police shooting a few blocks away around 8:00 last night. a plain closed officer was chasing after a suspected gang member. he pulled out a tech 9 pistol. they ordered him to drop the bongo he raised the weapon and the officers opened fire.

we understand he is at the hospital with nonlife threaten injuries. as far as the demonstration that ended here, no one was hurt, police officers are protesting. police are telling us this morning no arrests were made. live this morning in the mission district alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:02. happening right now thousands of bay area apple fans they are out in long lines waiting to buy the now iphone 5. tara moriarty is also live outside apple store in san francisco. what is going on tara? >> reporter: how much would you have paid for that very first iphone? we net a guy online that paid $700. he did get a rebate later of course but a huge chunk of change for that product. he said he's bought every single iphone since its inception. in two hours the folks will be heading inside because the store will finally open its doors. around 5:30 this morning the black velvet curtain dropped and folks out here got a jolted

joy. the person at the front of the line has been here since 8:00 last night. we met one woman that was paid $120 to wait in line for four hours. >> so i work for cass. we had someone camping out at the june onstore since monday. i was hired here to wait here for four hours. they will swap out my place at 8:00 a.m.. analysts say the new iphone is faster, thinner, lighter with a longer battery life. some criticize the new charging port and mapping feature. still apple reported more than two million preorders in a first 24 hours and one analyst predicts apple will sell between 6-8 million iphones. if we walk over the store is still dusting and getting rid of some of the fingerprints. here we have national media. this is quite a big story as

folks nation-wide waiting for that iphone 5. we are live in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. live in new york look at this. a crowd. about an hour ago. the doors opened at apple stores in new york city. we are watching people file through. kind of thinning out but still a big crowd. listen to this the demand for the iphone is so high new york police department is telling iphone 5 buyers register their new phones with the police. because they are expecting to see a rise in iphone thefts soon. plus in australia apple cofounder steve was knack was among the first to get the new phone. he tweeted a picture saying he was in line for the first iphone 5 in the world. he was first in line in palo alto when the last iphone before s was released. in election news this morning mitt romney returns to the bay area today to raise some cash for his campaign.

afternoon fundraiser is scheduled for that. strawberry hill estates in hillsborough. chopper 2 flew over the estate yesterday. tickets $50,000 a head. in a few weeks president obama will return to the bay area as well for a san francisco concert and rally fundraiser. according to the bay area news group the october 8th event will be held at the bill graham civic auditorium. tickets range between $100 and $7500. congress is preparing to take recess until after the november election. but first they have keyish eyes to resolve. coming up at 6:15 we are going to go live to washington, d.c. to tell you why it could be a long weekend for some members of congress. time now 6:06. the space shuttle endeavour will be flying over us here in the bay area about 8:30 this -- about 9:30 this morning. before the endeavour retires to the museum in los angeles it

will be flying over the state capitol and then over us here in the bay area. the faa by the way is restricting air space around san francisco, sacramento, and los angeles today between 9:30 and 11:30 this morning air space is restricted below 5,000 feet and a 25-mile radius around san francisco. now next month endeavour will take a 12-mile road trip from lax to the california science center right near the l.a. coliseum. it will be riding through the streets. this is a new video from l.a.. they have been cutting down trees. almost 400 trees to make it wide enough for the wings of the endeavour to get through the streets. now the museum by the way promises they are going to replant about 1,000 of those trees. make shire you stay right here -- make sure you stay right here with ktvu for what is going on with the space shuttle endeavour.

people angered by the film. back here at home three san francisco police officers are still on disability this morning following a severe reaction to poison oak. it happened earlier this month while they were struggling with a homeless man holding a tree branch in golden gate park. police say that homeless man william degan became violent with a park ranger. that is when he attacked the ranger and the police officers with that tree branch. he was arrested. he's facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon. san mateo police are now joining the efforts to find a retired firefighter that went missing during a cross country train trip. they are sending two detectives to colorado to help search for charlie dowd. the 69-year-old was on his way to chicago to visit his son and investigators think he may have fallen off the train. search crews are focusing on a 160-mile area between colorado and nebraska. time now 6:17.

if you have to fly in or out of san francisco international airport this weekend expect delays. the airport once again will close down one of the main runways. this time the crews will be installing new runway lights and working on a new taxi way. the work starts tonight at 10:00. it will continue until monday at 8:00 a.m.. we want to check in with sal for a look at traffic. how is the commute looking? >> we are doing very well. we are doing very well. we do have some things out there that have not caused major delays. there is a little bit of a delay now coming up ons bay bridge toll plaza and you can see the traffic is moving well in some of those lanes. we'll let you know more about when it starts to slow down. this is a look at the commute on 880 north and southbound. the traffic continues to look pretty good. no major problems this morning. and if you are driving in san jose that accident is still there. the traffic is moving along

welcome back to ktvu channel 2 morning news. time is 6:23. sheriffs deputies are keeping close watch of a middle school where a note was found. a custodian found the note before classes. a deputies was called but search of the campus did not turn up anything. the school stayed open but some parents decided to keep their children home. uc berkeley is hiring new counselors to help undocumented

students on campus. university officials say they created new halftime counseling positions to give academic support for financial aid and legal services. they started this fall. right now there are about 200 undocumented students on campus. 6:24. a san francisco firefighter diagnosissed with breast cancer is still fighting a battle over benefits. jeanette rivera she is scheduled for a double mastectomy next week. however she went back to work for the day yesterday because she is out of sick time. the city said her current condition it's not life threaten being they denied her application for the catastrophic illness program which would have allowed fellow firefighters do donate their sick time. >> i'm looking at at least six months of recovery and possibly another year worth of surgeries as we fine tune.

>> she is now seeking workman's compensation. she plans to appeal the city's decision. she is hoping all of this attention and the support she is getting will change how the city awards catastrophic illness benefits. a texas cancer center is looking to space to help them fight deadly diseases. the md a.m.er son program is launching a program called moon shot. they are making a $3 billion investment hoping to turn scientific discoveries into clinical advances. they are focusing on five illnesses including lung cancer and one form of breast cancer. it may be a bit more difficult to find parking around the bay area today. several cities including san francisco, oakland, and san jose a celebrating park-ing day. that is the global event that allows them to take over metered parking spots and turn

cleaned up. it was cleaned up a short time ago. the protestors were upset what ended up being a nonfatal police shooting that happened earlier in the evening. last night during a demonstration that broke out someone vandalized the front of the mission police station. we watched as city crews cleaned up that graffiti. someone spray painted the word killers on the front door. this broke out around 10:30 last night. several protestors were here. they faced off with officers that were in riot gear. during the protests someone spray painted the front side of the police station. no one was arrested but it certainly got heated. >> when you do something corrupt and evil people see. people see right through it. >> reporter: that demonstration was in response to a police shooting that happened around 8:00 last night. it was just a few blocks away

on 14th street near south vaness. that is where they were chasing after a suspected gang member. police say that man pulled out a tech 9 pistol. officers ordered him to drop it but officers say he raised the weapon and the off thes opened fire. the man holding the gun was hit twice and was taken to the hospital but he is expected to be okay. no one was hurt at the protest. at this point you can see that things are back to normal here at the mission police station. live this morning in san francisco alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. happening now the coupdown to the -- countdown to the endeavour fly over. we will get a look at the shuttle as it passes by the bay area one more time. we just took a live look. a lot of people out there this morning. >> reporter: that is right. the doors just opened to the public a short time ago and already a huge crowd has fathered. all these people are waiting to

witness endeavour's last mission. the shuttle piggy backing on a specially modified boeing 747 will be passing around 9:45. endeavour is on its final flight heading toward los angeles where it will be placed on permanent display at the california science center. they are expecting as many as 8,000 people to show up for series of displays. spectators say they didn't want to miss this once in a lifetime view. >> i have never gone to see in the launches or landings. i heard a landing but had never been nearby to see it happening. it seemed like a life event i missed out on. this is my last chance. >> reporter: you can see people here have brought their chairs and provisions. they have a few hours left to wait but they say it will be worth it. live in mountain view ann rubin. weather sometimes prevents parts of the bay area for getting a close look at many of

the taliban packed up millions of dollars of military equipment at a base in kandahar. that now leaves behind about 68,000 american forces in that war zone. local overnight news san jose police are investigating the latest case of violence in their city. officers responded to a report of a gunshot victim just before 10:30 last night at flanagan dry and alvin avenue in east san jose. officers learned that a second shooting victim went to a hospital himself. both victims are men. they are believed to be in their 30s. they are expected to survive and no arrests have been made. in other overnight news an investigation is under way in a shooting in the town of rodeo. investigators are not saying much about the case but that the victim was reportedly in grave condition when air lifted to the hospital. the shooting happened at just about 10:00 last night. deputies taped off the scene and brought in danville police dog to try to find that gunman.

time is 6:37. san francisco police busy investigating a deadly overnight accident. it happened around 1:00. police say a woman was driving on bay shore near caesar chavez when she hit a has been who was walking in the street. now the woman is cooperating with the police investigation. the bay shore off ramp to southbound highway 101 was closed for several hours. if you happen to have seen what happened out there, contact the san francisco police department. meantime police in martinez say they will not cite the man that drove his car into a gas station and triggered a big explosion and fire. coming up at 6:47 we'll talk about the number of pump collision fires that happen every year and the danger that gas stations see more often. >> kind of surprising story. 6:38 is the time. let's go back over to sal. the friday morning commute. how is it looking? >> it's looking okay. we just got word of a new accident on the sunol grade.

brand new crash. southbound 680. we'll watch for that. that just came in. we're not sure if it's causing any delay to traffic. this is a look at the westbound bay bridge. it's backed up now. the metering lights have been switched on and the traffic will be a little slow as you drive to the toll plaza. you see there is a little bit of waiting there. this is a look at interstate 880 and the traffic is moving along relatively well. no major problems. i'm moving the maps now so southbound this is the sunol grade our control room was nice to bring up for us. this there is no slow down just yet. the accident was reported on val see dose road. so watch for slow traffic in that area. we will get you something on that coming up. this is where the accident was reported so far we don't have anything in the way of slow downs reported. let's go to steve. let's do that and a happy friday. patchy low clouds. when i came in it was clear.

restaurant. it happened on fourth street during the popular thursday night farmers market. look at the pictures. police say that suv jumped a curb and crashed into lundy's restaurant. the woman was walking in the area and she was hit. >> there was somebody under the car asking for help. >> it happened so fast. it's unbelievable. >> fourth street was closed down for several hours during the police investigation. now that woman was rushed to the hospital. she suffered major injuries. the driver of the car and his family are being questioned by police. the restaurant was closed at the time. there were no customers inside. new information about that huge fire at a martinez gas station. police have announced they will not cite the driver that backed into the pump and sparked that explosion and fire. no one was hurt. the station manager was able to shut off fuel. and experts say pump collision fires do happen only about ten

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. some hope across europe about a bailout plan is helping stock markets around the world. dow jones up about 37 points. time now 6:55. employees at yosemite national park may be tested for the

hantavirus. health officials want to survey employees to see if they were infected by the virus. three park employees had flu like symptoms and they were tested. they are now sealing up doors and windows as a precaution. we already know nine people have been infected with the virus. three of them have died. a san francisco human rights commissioner is back behind bars on child pornography charges. 66-year-old larry brinkin was arrested yesterday after they found graphic photos on his exciter. he was first arrested on similar charges back in june but they said they needed more time to investigate. he retired from his city post in 2010. san francisco's recreation and park commission unanimously approved a sub way station. the union square station needed the commissioners approval because it will sit on park property. critics say it violates a charter provision about the

nonregistration national use of public space. now they are threatening a lawsuit to try to block that station. if you have unwanted soda in your home today is the day to trade it in for healthier options. they are holding a soda exchange program in cupertino today. anyone that brings in any unopened cans or bottles of soda will get free fruit and veggie vouchers. the exchange goes from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 this afternoon. time now 6:56. two bay area animals just made it into the guinness book of world records. first zach is a 25-year-old parrot from san jose with 22 dunks. he set the record for the most slam dunks per minute by a parrot on a specially designed basketball hoop. the second animal is a donkey named oklahoma sam from watsonville. he's been named the tallest donkey in the world.
