campbell, the shuttle cruised through blue skyed strapped to the jet. thousands cheered it watching from rooftops, beaches and office windows. we have live team coverage today starting with tara moriarty, live at the golden gate bridge. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon. you know the crowds have now dissipated but less than two hours ago they got the thrill of a lifetime. two pieces of american history never before seen together. >> woo hoo. >> it was a spine tingling moment. >> woo. >> oh, this is amazing. >> the golden gate bridge, e i mean this doesn't get any better than this. >> bittersweet for them. >> for me it is spectacular, it is exciting. >> just being able to see it for real and tell it goodbye. >> around 10:20 this morning space shuttle endeavour circled twice around the golden gate bridge. >> yeah, this is like the one and only chance.

mars and kind of exciting to see that too and be a part of it all. >> after san francisco the endeavour headed to moffett field and monterrey and there where it will be put in a museum. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> it made a low fly over there in the south bay. ann ruben is live there with the crowd's reaction and why this was a thrilling moment for people who work there. >> reporter: that's right. the place actually cleared out quickly here. there are estimates ther were close to 20,000 people all craning their necks to get a glimpse of endeavour. their cameras out, their eyes on the sky thousands gathered to catch a glimpse of endeavour, off to the side flying at 1500 feet. >> it was really cool.

it wayne wasn't that loud. i expected it to be louder and i was surprised about how low it flew. that was really cool. >> the trip was in many ways an honor for the men and woman who made it possible. >> it is choking me up. it is paying tribute to the thousands of people would worked on the program. >> the shuttle tiles were invented here and the shuttle flight simulator is here too. every shuttle pilot has trained on it, including stephen robinson. >> the fact it worked even once is amazing. and the fact we put together an entire space station with the shuttle, never had to bring a part back is miracle upon miracle so there is pride and sadness. >> when the shuttle arrived there were gasps from the crowd many of whom came to witness history. >> it is a very meaningful day. erthwill be a lot of people that will never forget this and i will be one of them.

>> of course as the shuttle headed south toward its final resting place in l.a. one man vowed it would not be last. we scan can go down south and see her in stead of doing that there. >> we have heard it was cleared for another pass but that didn't happen but people said it was well worth the wait. >> before flying over the bay area the piggyback space shuttle soared over the seat capitol at 9:45 this morning in sacramento and flew over there over sunny and hazy skies. it made a swooping uturn to give the capitol another view of it. the shuttle is now over southern california and is expected to touchdown at los angeles airport in 45, the

shuttle and the carrier are putting on a show for the area, swooping over the hollywood hills signs and other landmarks, again it is scheduled to land there and that will mark the final end of the shuttle's mission and the program. endeavour will stay at lax for a few weeks then next month take a 12 mile road trip to the california science center right next to the l.a. coliseum. nearly 400 trees are being cut down along the route to make room for the 78 foot wide shuttle. the museum is promising to replant a thousand trees. we have a few more details now on endeavour's last flight. the shuttle and its 747 carrier took off at 8:15 this morning from edwards airforce base in the mojave desert. the combined weight is 4 75,000

pounds but less than a commercial jet filled with passengers and luggage. the estimated cost of moving the shuttle from florida to california, including today's spectacular flyovers is about 28 million dollars. but the california science center is footing the bill, not taxpayers. send us your photos of the endeavour flyover. e-mail them to us at photos at ktvu.com. make sure to tell us your name and where you were when you took the picture. you can post them directly to our facebook page, look for ktvu channel 2. san francisco police are keeping close watch on one of their station houses after it was vandalized during a protest. today a city worker cleaned up graffiti from the mission police station. vandals spray painted the word killer on the front door. last night several dozen protesters marched through the mission district angry over a none fatal police shooting

earlier. they confronted officers standing guard at the station. >> you should not let your fears stand in the way of what you know is right and when you do something like that -- >> -- breaking up -- >> the protest was triggered by a police shooting last night. police say a plain clothed officer was chasing a suspected gang member. police say the man pointed a pistol at the officer and refused to drop it. an officer then shot the man but he is expected to survive. two men shot overnight in east san jose are expected to survive. police were called to the scene of a heated argument at flanagan drive around 10:20 and found two men, aged 39 and 24 with gunshot wounds, one of them shot in the chest. officers tell ktvu they are not sure how the men knew each other but they don't think the shootings were gang related. an investigation is underway into a shooting in

rodeo. few details from the sheriff's office. but the shooting victim was in grave condition when airlifted to the hospital. it happened around 10:00 last night. the area was sealed off during the search for the gunman. san francisco police are investigating a deadly overnight accident. around 1:00 a woman driving on bayshore hit a pedestrian walking in the street. the driver is cooperating with police. the bayshore off-ramp to southbound highway 101 was closed for several hours during the investigation. if you have any information you are asked to call san francisco police. a 78-year-old woman in san rav san rafael is recovering after that. it happened on 4th street during the farmer's market. police say the suv jumped a curve and crashed into the restaurant, hitting the woman walking by. >> this is a real popular

alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. >> just in the past hour republican candidate for president mitt romney released his 2011 tax returns. critics have been calling for him to release more than just the two years of tax returns he released earlier this summer. last year romney paid 1.9 million in taxes. that was on 13.7 million in income. so when you do the math, 14.1%. his campaign earlier estimated he would pay 3.2 million. he will be here later today to raise cash. he will attend an afternoon fundraiser at the strawberry hill estate in hillsborough. news chopper 2 flew over it yesterday. tickets are 50,000 dollars a person for the event which begins at 4:45. closed to the media. the campaign says that is because it is a private home. president obama will be back in san francisco for a

stocks trading higher including some companies reporting higher profits, apple propelled by the frenzy around this iphone 5 is up right now, the dow currentlyup 17, nasdaq up 8, s&p up two. some concord city workers are holding an unusual protest today by reporting to their jobs. today is one of 13 mandatory furlough days for many city workers. the employs say the furloughs are illegal so they plan to go to work. city leaders though are not commenting so far but they have said they will discipline any worker who attempts to provide public services on furlough days. the white house today announced it is putting california's high speed rail project on the fast track in an effort to put people to work. president obama's plan calls for a faster permit and review process for building the fresno
