development for many decades. for some ames workers today's fly over was very emotional. >> it's making its final flight, it's choking me up. >> reporter: it's working already, many youngsters we talked to said today's fly over reenforces dreams of space exploration. >> i really wants to design a new spacecraft that can deliver robots up to mars. >> you never know what little boy or little girl is going to make it all the way, some of them will fly, that's great. >> reporter: if there was any disappointment is that the

shuttle only made one swing around moffett field. it may have been one of the most picture-esque looks at the shuttle over the golden gate bridge. not once, but twice and the second time was lower and better. the weather couldn't have been better, clear, sunny skies making for a picture perfect moment. people skipped school and work and gathered to view the shuttle. the beach was filled with people taking in the historic moment. >> for me it's spectacular. it's exciting. >> it's just being able to see it for real and tell it goodbye. >> it's the end of an era. just the end of an era that we may never see again. >> reporter: many photographers say they actually woke up about 3:00 in the morning to make sure that they found a pet spot for -- found a perfect spot for a spectacular fly over. hundreds of excited

onlookers crowded along the shores waiting for endeavour to soar above them. and the shuttle did not disappointment. people gasped in awe and pointed the cameras to the sky as the piggy backing shuttle swooped over treasure island and glided across the bay. >> reporter: endeavour's trip over the east bay was marked with a huge celebration at the space and science center in the oakland hills. hundreds of people and parents showed up for a viewing party there. the atmosphere was charged with excitement but some expressed a bit of disappointment saying the shuttle flew too low to get a good view. >> it was actually a bit obscured by the trees and observatory. but john and i got to see it. did you see the space shuttle? >> it crossed so fast. >> but it was amazing. >> it was very cool. definitely worth the wait. >> the center offered demonstrations and space activities. after the space shuttle

still on the scene in walnut creek where two small grass fires started earlier today. those fires were reported at about 3:30 this afternoon on valley vista road near boundary oats. flames scorched 6 acres before firefighters brought them under control about an hour later. fire officials say there were no immediate threats to homes but structure protection crews were deployed at a precaution. apple fans finally got their hands on the long awaited iphone 5 today. tom vacar has the two things that may disappointment them. >> reporter: take a look at this, the line has been here all day long. it's getting longer around the world. the problem already a very short line. but the connector problem that could be pricey. >> the new map stuff is pretty cool. >> reporter: the iphone 5's new mapping direction replaces the google mapping system that's come with the phone since the beginning.

>> it does have turn by turn directions for free that it didn't have before. but the quality of the data is what's going to keep you from getting lost. so i think that's the biggest concern right now about this. >> reporter: in other words some locations are misplaced and it'll take time to make it completely accurate. >> the mapping data isn't as good. i know apple is working very hard on it but google has had several years of a head start on apple. i know that's going to bother some people. >> reporter: the other problem the new data port/charger cord is all new and won't work with the old connector system. >> people who for instance have bought a speaker dock that relies on the phone nestling in and uses that older connector are going to be annoyed. apple does make an adapter. it's $29. and that's $29 you have to spend if you have one of those accessories. >> it seems that it's not, it's a little challenging to find the like the hole, like i'm trying to -- i guess i can get

used to it. i don't know. >> reporter: and for those, getting used to it will mean buying several adapters and new accessories. but most buyers love it. >> super fast. yeah. first thing you notice is that it's very light, you know. i have the 4g and yeah it's way lighter. and even though it's lighter, it's also bigger. google announced plans today to shut down it's music downloading service in china. google is scheduled to close on october 19th until then users t content. the mountain view based search giant blames the closure on the site's poor performance. the service launched in 2009. a san jose family needed not guilty to charges they abused and neglected more than a dozen people living at their

home. police say 13 mentally disabled people were beaten and not allowed to use toilet paper. >> they're so upset and they get angry about the way people treat the elderly people like that. >> reporter: the elderly are respected in their culture and worry if the case will reflect negatively on the vietnamese community. investigations are still being gathered from social services. >> looks are deceiving. we don't know if the stuff that has been given to us has been piecemeal given to us. >> i am confidence in our jury system i'm sure the jury and judge will make the right decisions. >> reporter: the next step for this case is the preliminary hearing where evidence will be delivered to determine if the case will go to trial. that is set for october 29th. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. a 28-year-old mexican national today was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for

the repeated sexual abuse of a young boy from walnut creek. last month a contra costa county jury convicted oscar juarez. the abuse occurred in 2010, they said that the victim is a relative of juarez who was staying with the child's family while working as a day laborer. state assemblyman roger hernandez says he spent $15,000 to clear himself of two drunk driving chargeless. the 37-year-old west covina democrat was arrested by concord police earlier this year. he was cleared of one charge last month and on tuesday a superior court judge dismissed a second case. speaking to the contra costa county times, hernandez said quote it was very expensive and very embarrassing to go through this process. only on 2, a new innovative bay area program to help prevent sports injuries among young athletes. and if you missed it. don't change the channel because coming up in 14 minutes we're going to show you the best pictures from the space shuttle endeavour's low and

about 35 minutes ago republican presidential candidate mitt romney touched down for his latest bay area visit. romney landed at sfo and is now heading to a private fundraiser tonight in hillsboro. before coming here romney released his 2011 tax return. he and his wife ann paid $1.9 million in taxes at an effective rate of 14%. romney initially refused to make those returns public. the obama campaign moved to a new office today. right across the street from oakland's city hall. campaign organizers say it gives them much more space as

sports injuries among young people. only on 2 tonight, john fowler is in albany with how young athletes can help themselves. john. >> reporter: doctors say that sports injuries among young people are skyrocketing but now there's a new way to help prevent those injuries. sierra cunningham is getting a sports assessment. although she's not injured, her doctor recommends physical therapy. it's part of a new kaiser permanente program. healthy athletes strengthen and improve body mechanic. >> we hope it reduces injury rate. >> reporter: the program kicked off today in a symposium of kaiser sports medicine physicians. >> to know that ahead of time

today for the endeavour fly over. you know this entire weekend is going to be like today. we're going to have a really nice weekend coming up. there's a few high clouds. that's not fog. you can tell that because you see how it's not stock up at the fog and it has a pattern of a high cloud. that's no fog at the coast. that's no visible highlight and we have some high clouds overhead. things heated up today. they warmed up five to 10 degrees. the air started to sink a little bit. that's how we did away with a lot of the fog that was at the coast. so tomorrow is kind of a carbon copy of what we head today. sunday is marine layer is going to fatten off a little bit and cool off a little bit but a subtle change. isn't that how it's been. we had this subtle weather continuing. these are the highs from today. highs tomorrow, let's duplicate those. as we get closer to fog it's tougher. the days are getting shorter and it's tougher for the fog to set up. needles to say so we're going to have less fog than we've had

the last couple of weeks offshore this weekend. the warm weather kind of keeps away. we're balanced between two weak systems. the low pressure on sunday will get closer and that will drop these temperatures. that's really the only difference. so saturday is your warmest day. saturday temperatures drop down a few degrees. you will notice it. you will notice sunday. you will just notice coastal fog, a little breezier. just a little cooler in the morning with the low clouds. a little more coverage. fog coverage. 88 in livermore. lots going on in the bay area this weekend. we have baseball going on. we have football going on and if you've got outdoor plans just look forward to them. maybe some sunscreen because the weather the going to be nice. as you look at the forecast highs in the peninsula, mid- 70s, upper 70s. kind of what you would expect for this time of year. slightly cooler on sunday but just -- it'll be super nice.
