good morning, welcome to mornings on 2 and sunday september 23 and i'm john. >> mike and clawden are off today. let's look at your sunday forecast with rosemary. >> a subtle cool down in the forecast for your sunday this morning. we are waking up with a mix of sunshine and clouds. low clouds right at the coast. high clouds over parts of the bay. mid-40s to mid-50s is where we stand at this hours. passing clouds we continue for the afternoon and temperatures falling a few degrees. subtle changes in store for the back to work monday. i will take you there in a few moments. new this morning, federal authorities have begun a criminal investigation into the chevron refinery and unrelated to last month's huge fire in richmond. comes after investigators discovered the company detoured pollutants around monitoring equipment at the refinery. investigators say chevron was

doing this intentionally for four years. air quality investigators say the process allowed gas to burn and pollute the environment without officials knowing about it. tomorrow we could learn more about that big fire at the chevron refinery shut down a crude unit and sent more than 15,000 more people to the hospital. representatives from several government agencies are holding a meeting to give an update on the investigation. that meeting is set for 5:15 p.m. at the richmond memorial auditorium. giants fans have something to celebrate this morning after the team clinched its 8th national league west title. the second in three years. ktvu is live at at&t park with more on the excitement. reporter: good morning. a lot of excited giants fans waking up this morning and coming down with a case of the playoff fever. you might be able to see crews getting at and t park ready for today's big game after the giants clinched national league west championship in last night's game against the padres.

>> runner goes, line drive, pagan and that's it. reporter: giants won last night's game 8-4 sending the giants into the playoffs and sending fans into a frenzy. now fans have been hoping for a return to the playoffs after a 2010s world series victory and looking like they will have that chance once again. fans were out early this morning predawn saying they watched last night's game but wanted to get a copy of the paper this morning as a keepsake and saver the moment. >> buy the chronicle and read about the story. season ticket holder but nice to see it in print. reporter: the giants will start their playoff series october 6 or 7. but still have ten regular season games to go including today's game against the padres. first pitch today set for 1:00 this afternoon. you bet there are going to be a lot of excited giants fans at today's game.

live in san francisco, ktvu, channel 2 news. oakland police are looking for the gunman in an overnight shooting that sent one person to the hospital. happened around 4:00 this morning at 68 and bancroft. when they arrived they found someone who was shot in the head. victim appears to have been a passenger in a car hit by gunfire and taken to a local hospital with unknown injuries. several people are in the hospital after a crash on highway 101 and palo alto. chp says car was heading north on 101 near the san antonio road off-ramp when it went off the road and into bushes. no word on what caused that crash. police are on high alert for more vandalism in san francisco's mission district after officers shot a suspected gang member. while there are no reports of major damage last night, protesters vandalized banks, restaurant and a gym on friday night. on thursday vandals spray painted the word killers on police station windows. >> we have extra officers patrolling throughout the mission and we will have extra

officers throughout all of the high traffic corridors throughout the district. >> police say the shooting happened when a suspected gang member ran from undercover officers then pointed a gun at them. the suspect is expected to survive. the police will hold a town hall meeting tomorrow to address the public's concern about that shooting. it is set for 11:30 a.m. at the corner stone church on 17 street. three day peace rally continues in oakland today. >> if today is not the day to make a difference, then you tell me when is going to be a better day. >> yesterday, dozens of people marched to city hall to take a stand against violence in their community. the mayor attended the rally and says police are getting much needed help from the public. recently the police have been making arrests in about 50% of the shootings. and that's because the community is participating and is cooperating with them. >> the mayor added that oakland police will launch a cease-fire program next month to focus on

primary criminals in the city. it's been a year since two of three american hikers were freed from a prison in iran. josh fattal organized a rally to celebrate his freedom but the road to recovery was not easy. he and to other hikers were hiking in 2009 when they were arrested by arennian border guards. they were held on suspicion of espionage. all three attended uc berkeley. >> a bounty offered for the death of the man who made that anti-islamic movie that sparkd protests around the world. pakistani government minister says he is offering $100,000 reward for anyone who kills the film maker. the official says he is acting on his own behalf and not as representative of pakistan's government. he asked the taliban and al qaeda to carry out that assassination. state department says cnn reports on the personal diary of the u.s. ambassador who died in libya against his family's wishes. ambassador chris stevens was

killed in a violent anti-american protest in the city of benghazi. protest began after the release of the film that ridiculed the prophet muhammed. cnn broke a pledge not to report on stevens diary. cnn says issues deserved full reporting and confirmed the information in the diary with other sources. at least four people have died and 70 people have been hurt in protests against armed islamic militias in libya thousands provetesters stormed a benghazi compound where the militia is suspected of killing ambassador stevens and then set fire to the compound. two main militias in the eastern city announced they were disbanding after those protests. analysts say it's surprising because it's a strong hold for islamic extremists. tens of thousands of people protests anti-islam film in the nigerian city of cano. shouting death to america. death to israel and death to the enemies of islam. protestors burned images of

president obama and stomped on the american flag. no one was seriously hurt but the protest did cause gridlock in the city of roughly 4.5 million people. the demonstration was organized by the islamic movement of nigeria, a pro iranian group. the big raider game in oakland, big giants game in san francisco. rosemary, how will the weather be? >> a fine day. numbers not as warm as we saw yesterday. but still looking good and this morning a mix of clouds out there bringing on a beautiful sunrise. sun rose just before 7:00 a.m. and will set right about 7:04. give ewing view there. filtered sunshine in the forecast for today. i will show you what's behind the high clouds coming up in a moment. you can see over the north bay we have mostly cloudy skies with mid-and high level clouds. we've got fog banked up right along the coast line. the marine layer about 1,000 feet. shallow and not really moving inland. that's with a we have in areas near pacifica and half moon bay this morning. visibility down in some cases.

good morning to you. had rise and shine a beautiful shot there of the sun comes op over mount diablo. partly cloudy skies and quiet start to the morning. there may finally be good news for firefighters working two large wildfires in central washington state. authorities say a break in the weather means the danger for homes is reduced but home owners should be prepared to leave if the situation changes. fiemps had feared that lightning could spark more fires and high winds would fan the flames. but firefighters say the weather allowed them to make good progress on the fire lines. and there is also good news about a wildfire burning in nevada's pine nut mountains. carter springs fire has grown to 3,000 acres but firefighters say the fire is burn ago way from homes. fire broke out at friday afternoon. us-395 was closed for several

hours but has re-opened. fire is 20% contained. we were following developing news in nepal where an avalanche has killed nine climbers. six others are still missing but the search has been suspended because of bad weather. avalanche happened as climbers were climbing to the peak. ten other members survived but many were injured. a flash flood triggered by heave rains in india are blamed for deaths of nine construction workers. 15 others are missing. workers were repairs roads when heavy waters swept through their camp. helicopters have dropped supplies for 10,000 people in that area. this morning new york city police say they plan to arrest a man who deliberately jumped into a tiger exhibit at the bronx zoo. police say the man was not a suicide attempt and he wanted to be one with the tiger. he allegedly told them that everyone in life makes choices. he has been charged with trespassing for jumping off a

monorail ride into the tiger den. he is in stable condition at a hospital after suffering broken bones and being mauled on his arms, legs, shoulders and back. three people are recovering after a hot air balloon ride over albuquerque went terribly wrong. the pilot was attempting a splash and dash over the rio grande river. that's when the basket clips the water. but officials say the balloon suddenly lost altitude and crashed into the ground from 50 feet. eight people of the balloon sufferedded minor injuries. houston police officer is on paid leave after shooting and killing a mentally ill double amputee in a wheel chair. the man was shot around 2:30 yesterday morning at the healing hands group home for the mentally ill. care taker said he called the police. when police arrived he tried to stab an officer with an object, that turned out to be a pen. >> tight quarters in there and was able to corner the officer back into a corner of the room.

>> the -- on pad of paper. >> so for those officers in there they didn't know what he was holding. >> correct. >> he was in his 40s and suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. he lost one arm and one leg in a train accident years ago. a woman in new mexico is recovering after being hit by gunfire during a college football game. it happened yesterday at new mexico state university. the woman was sitting in the stands when a stray bullet hit her. police think the bullet came from outside the stadium after someone fired shots into the air. the woman's injuries are not considered life-threatening. federal investigation found the president security was not compromised as a result of a secret service prostitution scandal. back in april, several secret service agents were accused of hiring prostitutes while on duty with president obama in colombia. the department of homeland security now says there is no evidence the agents placed the president in harm's way. female soldiers deploying in afghanistan are trying something new on the front lines.

soldiers from fort campbell are first to try body armor to fate woman's body the idea was suggested in 2009 after soldiers say they off the-trouble bending over and getting in and out of tight spots. the new vests eliminate gaps between the material and body creating a tighter fit. a new report shows drinking alcohol has become a public health crisis among members of the military. the defense department says about 20% of active duty service members reported they engaged in heavy drinking in 2008. that's an increase of 47% compared to the previous ten years. officials say troops typically drink for fun to ease stress of war or be part of the brother and sister hood. >> we have a recall to tell you about if you shop at a popular store. it will be easier for women to get birth control. how a new law signed by the governor helping to make that possible. subtle drop in afternoon highs is on tap for today. outside our doors right now a

contra costa county have tested positive. there are two reported human cases this year. across the state there are 147 confirmed human cases. and six people have died. new york city minister accused of padding his own pockets with the money he raised to help victims of september 11th and hurricane katrina. reverend carl keys raised millions of dollars for his disaster relief fund. according to the financial records, keys used some of the money to pay off personal debts and support his church. keys and his lawyers say none of money was used improperly. people around the world are protesting the practice of fracking for natural gas included demonstration at chrisy field in san francisco yesterday. fracing involves forcing water and chemicals into the earth to break apart rocks that release natural gas. fracing is happening in southern california and parts of the central valley. the gas industry says it is a safe way to get natural gas. protestors say the process can pollute ground water. for the first time in decades the women who inspired the movie a league of their own
