outcome. and so that's pretty much the way i looked at it and that's the way i conducted myself. >> today, owners of nearly a dozen union city businesses are adding up the damage from a four-alarm fire this morning. crews were called out to the alvarado place shopping center after 1:00 a.m. by then, the fire had already been burning for hours. there was disbelief on this woman's face as she saw the damage. >> that's my shop! >> reporter: this family owns the shop next door. >> oh, my good. it's like eight years of hard work. it's all finished. [ sirens ] >> reporter: almost a dozen businesses were severely damaged in this overnight fire that burned for hours before it was spotted. >> the fire was burning up in

the attic. >> reporter: once that attic was opened up, the flames were tough to spot. nearby residents were evacuated for fear the fire would spread. >> there's a lot of trees back there. if it's -- the thought did cross my mind. >> reporter: the fire was out before the sun came up but the damage was extensive. we lost a lot of businesses. and we saved a lot of businesses. >> firefighters say an aggressive coordinated attack helped them get this fire out. but so did one other thing. take a look inside this business. you can see the damage is extensive. the roof is gone but take a look next door. inside this vietnamese restaurant. you can see not as much damage, not anywhere close. why? well, in between these two businesses there is a firewall. it could have been worse but that's little comfort for this woman. >> it's really heartbreaking. >> reporter: investigators are searching for a cause. but that will take time, as it will for businesses who have to put back what the fire took

away. in union city, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. a fire is also being investigated in richmond. it started after 2:00 this morning on brookside drive. investigators say there was lightning in the area at the time but they are still trying to find out if that was the cause. firefighters used a dull -- bulldozer to help put the fire out. no one was hurt. coming up later, the good samaritans who may have saved a fire and his children when their car burst into flames. that story is coming up in 11 minutes. in developing news out of miami, florida, there is an emergency operation underway at a college parking garage that collapsed and killed one worker. that garage is under construction at the miami-dade college campus. that construction was almost complete. but today it caved in. the collapse happened just before the noon hour. but no students were in the area at the time.

the $22 million project began in february and was supposed to include classroom and office space on first floor. top state department officials are testifying before congress today on the attack that killed u.s. ambassador to libya chris stevens and three other americans. republicans criticize the obama administration's handling of the attack and today the republican-led house oversight committee is grilling administration officials about security at the benghazi consulate. it's believed that al qaeda- linked terrorists orchestrated the attack, possibly using a demonstration over a u.s. anti- muslim movie as cover. president obama is also meeting with secretary of state, hillary clinton, this afternoon, after that congressional hearing. mr. obama is back on the job as president after a campaign swing through california and ohio. today, his campaign managers are accusing mitt romney of misleading voters about several issues including abortion. they say he's hiding more

and firefighters are worried that the they will spread. >> at least eight fires are blamed on the unknown arsonist. anyone with information about the fires is asked to contact the authorities. a father and his two toddlers are safe thanks to the quick thinking of three people who noticed his car was on fire. this happened on lakeshore avenue in oakland around 5:45 last night. flames and smoke were shooting out of his car. one man helped the driver escape while two women grabbed the 18-month-old babies in the back seat. >> i couldn't get the door open, so i had -- soily to pull the baby out of the window and the other lady grabbed the other window and pulled that

across parts of the bay area. but right now, a completely different story. a lot of sunshine out there. a lot of blue skies. you can see by the lack of texture on the bay area. we have glassy conditions out there. we're still tracking a few showers, mainly to the south as you can see here. there is the live sweep and the bulk of the action now, centered for big sur coastline. we still have the slight chance of a lingering sprinkle or shower, mainly over the south bay. but the bulk of the activity is heading down to southern california right now. actually picked up rainfall totals. .12. san jose, .09. as far as current numbers, we're beginning to warm up. it's nice out there. 70s for fairfield and antioch. hayward, 73 and san francisco, plenty of sunshine, those
