sink. good evening. welcome to this special edition of ktvu news. i'm heather holmes. >> i'm ken wayne. a candlelight vigil started for a hollister teacher whose body was found. we are in hollister where police have arrested a man in connection to her death. >> reporter: police are still at the crime scene trying to figure out how a hollister woman died. in the meantime, people started gathering about a half an hour ago in hollister to celebrate the way she lived. >> we came this evening to honor heather carroll. >> in times of sorrow, there is strength in numbers. friends and family gathered at a vigil to say goodbye to a young mother whose life ended toussaint. 25-year-old heather carroll was reported missing on wednesday. flyers with her picture were in

hollister including one taped to the garage of a family friend's house, the home where they say they found her body. >> you would think that someone who is of the -- was in a close relationship would participate in the search. >> the discovery followed a 12 hour swat team standoff at the home of 30-year-old david jose quiroz. neighbors on this cul-de-sac were told to evacuate. richard curry did not hear the order. >> i went to come outside and eight cops do to get back in the house. >> it was weird to see people with guns on our street. >> investigators with the state crime lab collected evidence all day. police say the suspect told investigators he got into an argument with the victim and that her death was accidental. >> he did tell us that he was responsible for her death. >> as neighbors try to resume normalcy, they could not forget about what happened on their

once a quiet street. >> it is very troubling. i'm glad i got the guy. >> i felt sorry for the family. >> there are about 200 people that are at the vigil tonight which is still going on. it started a little after seven tonight. police say they will be at the crime scene for the next couple hours gathering evidence. reporting live from hollister, know well walker. an investigation is underway after a sheriff's deputy shot a woman this morning. according to the sheriffs department, the woman led deputies on a vehicle chase around 1:30 a.m. it ended on collinsville road, a short time later. that is when the woman ran her pickup truck into a deputies car. the deputy shot and wounded her. she suffered injuries. no word on what sparked the chase. semper cisco police are trying to learn if three men in custody are connected to a shooting that happened early

this morning. police say that at about 1:15 a.m., a 45-year-old man was shot in the chest on lombard street. a short time later, police arrested three men in the same area after a short car chase. now officers are investigating whether the two incidents are related. there is no word tonight on the condition of the victim. the coast guard is investigating a bachelor party on san francisco bay that abruptly came to an end. twenty-two people, including four crew members were on board the charter boat the neptune around 8:30 p.m. the crews started and the vessel struck something near alcatraz and quickly started to take on water. >> we had a rock. there was a big jolt. everyone thought it was cool. d then it wasn't very cool. >> the coast guard and san francisco police managed to get everyone to safety. the neptune it stayed afloat.

>> giants fans and players are getting ready for the team to take on the st. louis cardinals and the national league championship series starting tomorrow. both teams had a chance to practice at at&t park today. we're live at the ballpark. there was a scary moment for one of the giants coaches. >> reporter: kind of a freak accident here. it was at batting practice. it had just gotten started when first base coast roberto kelly was hit in the back of the head with a ball. our camera was on buster posey when he hit that ball. it came off of his bad. you can see his reaction. it was a moment after that. layers, crutches and -- coaches and trainers rushed out to roberto kelly. he had to be helped off the field but he was conscious. >> the ball came over and a line drive hit him.

>> the team said kelly was taken to a hospital to be checked out for a concussion. meanwhile, the players continued preparing to take on st. louis tomorrow. both the teams one nailbiter is in the respective game five just to get here. in fact, many of the giants watched the end of the cardinals and the nationals game on the plane sitting in cincinnati am awaiting to see if they will be flying to washington or going to the bay area. they say they are happy to be back in the hometown. >> our fan base here is amazing. one of the best they have ever seen. to be able to play in front of them and reward them, it is huge. >> they have been awesome for us all year. it will be an intense series. >> we had a chance to speak to more players today, both on the giants as well as the

cardinals. there are some dedicated fans standing out here today trying to get a few autographs from their favorite giants. we're putting all that together for tonight at 10:00. live in san francisco, channel to. >> will be a fun matchup. >> the national league championship series kicks off tomorrow right here on ktvu. the giants take on the st. louis cardinals. our coverage begins at 5:00 p.m., right after the 49ers game. you can see the 49ers take on the new york giants at 1:00 p.m. oakland police say a man going door-to-door could be casing homes to burglarize them. police say the man wears an orange safety vest and a tag reading, oakland public safety. he is asking questions about alarm systems, including, how up-to-date they are and whether it is monitored. police say they are not aware of any city sponsored program offering this service. >> the family of slain schoolteacher susie company announced plans for her funeral. the family says that services will be next friday morning in

rodeo. that is near st. patrick's school where she taught elementary school for 13 years. she was found stabbed to death at her home eight days ago. police say a husband and wife from southern california, and who were arrested near seattle, will be charged with turmeric. she is survived by her husband, four children and one grandchild. caltrain says a woman is hospitalized after being struck by a train in san francisco. a spokeswoman said the woman was on that near 16 street when she was hit by a southbound train at about 10:20 a.m. this morning. caltrain says it appears to be an accident. 160 passengers on that train were transferred to another train. caltrain service returned to normal by noon today. a string of accidents on interstate 880 set several people to the hospital this morning. first, a man and fell asleep at the wheel and hit another car and the northbound lane. this was at about 5:00 a.m.

a few minutes later, a man driving a honda -- honda civic and the same area was rear- ended which caused him to run into another car. we're told that all the injuries were miner. a first of its kind fire drill was held this morning. fire officials say the drill in the kent woodlands area is particularly important because access to the area is limited. one fire captain even compared it to the same conditions as the oakland hills. because there are only two major roads and very narrow streets. >> very expensive homes up there. access is an issue. you have fire department personnel going in. >> about 50 residents and several agencies took part in the drill. it was organized by the sheriff's office. also the fire protection district and the property owners association. more than a people came out to ocean beach today to take part in what has become an annual tradition up political

activism. this morning, a large group joined together to form the words, dump citizens united. participants said it was the decision that allows corporations it to make virtually unlimited donations to political action committees. >> it is something people are really concerned about. we hope that the tide is turning on our government. and that we will take back our country for the people. >> here is a look at the finished photo. each participant who signed up will get a postcard mailed to them. the organizer, is a cab driver, who has put together a dozen of these events. they have been marching with a message. why this group of teenagers is determined to make a difference in the community. >> new figures are out on california's new online voter registration system. we will have the breakdown of who is using it and who is not.

. a car crashed into a fire hydrant and here is the result. a giant geyser. this video was taken at about 2:30. the fire department responded to the scene and where able to take care of the problem. and oakland. an oakland man who woke up to found his living room riddled with bullet holes in the floor, is calling on police to step up their patrols. gregory nash showed us where the bullets came into his home on coolidge avenue near nicole avenue. he said early this morning, he and his family heard gunfire and hit the floor. it wasn't until they woke up this morning that they realized the bullets had hit their house. he said late last month, a neighbor's house was hit by more than 55 bullets. and last week, a car was shot up on the street.

>> i don't want to go in the house until they figure out what is going on. they can shoot us and we will be dead. >> he says it breaks his heart to see the violence in the city where he grew up. he says he spoke with his pastor and decided to stay in his home saying that he will not run from the devil. >> they are fed up with the violent -- violence. a group of teenagers picked up signs and took to the streets. it is the kickoff to a campaign to curb violence, called it stops with me. >> it was a small group with a big message. they are trying to put an end to the violence, drugs and dysfunction that they say they see daily. they say it needs to stop. >> i lost a friend the other day. i am really in this program because i want to see change. >> his friend, aaron adams, died monday at a shooting. there have been others. >> i have seen three kids that

this happened to in the last three months. >> the group, alternatives in action, organized this march, they begin by taking responsibility for themselves. >> either you are a part of the problem or the solution. my young people are deciding to be the solution. >> they tried to draw as much attention as possible from onlookers. >> some people might get touchy about this and act out toward us. >> they believe they can help with the violence. they think that today was a good start. >> my personal message is, to come out and actually join us and promote the change. and not be a part of the violence. >> the launch of this anti- violent campaign will continue with a series of rallies and

vigils throughout the week. in oakland, ktvu news. an early look at california's brand-new voter registration program shows a significant number of users are young and likely to register as democrats. according to figures from political data incorporated, almost a third of online registrants were younger than 26. and more likely to register as democrats than republicans. the public and lawmakers opposed the online system saying that it could lead to voter fraud. at this point, about 43% of california voters are registered as democrats. 30% as republicans and about 20% as independent. mitt romney spent the day in a crucial battleground state of ohio. republican presidential candidate for the guys -- criticized obama for what he says, a misguided focus on big bird. this comes after the president slammed romney for wanting to pull federal funding from pbs. >> the income of the families

tuesday, the 16th at 6:00 p.m. it is being held at a university in new york. those in the audience can ask the candidates about foreign and domestic policy issues. it will be moderated by cnn reporters. as governor of massachusetts, mitt romney spent more than 400 days out of state during his four year term. that is according to a newly published report. the new york times says romney spent much of that time laying the groundwork for his first run for the white house in 2008. democratic criti told new york times mitt romney was more focused on his personal ambition than the needs of the state. a spokesman said mitt romney's travels did not interfere with his job as governor. >> tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary as a start of the cuban missile crisis. it started in 1962 when a u.s. plane photographed soviet missiles 90 miles from american soil in cuba. president john f. kennedy work publicly and privately to avoid a nuclear confrontation with

soviet leaders. in the end, both the soviet union and the united states could claim victories as the missiles left cuba and the u.s. dismantled its own missile installations in turkey. flight cancellations are coming to american airlines and that could affect travelers who have purchased tickets. the airlines will cut 31 flights per day in the first half of november. it says the cuts are in an attempt to recover from widespread delays -- delays. since the company declared bankruptcy, and they say the cancellations will not impact holiday travel plans. actor and television host gary collins died today. he starred in television series including the sixth sense and porn free. as well as hosting the syndicated talk show, our magazine. he also served as the mc for the ms. america pageant in the 1980s and 90s. he had one child. officials in harrison county

as far as temperatures from this afternoon, we have been warming up. that temperatures ranged from the upper-60s to the 70s for san francisco. oakland had the warmest location. forecast headlines for tonight, mostly clear and cool. patchy morning cloud cover tomorrow. increasing sunshine. this will be the key headline. temperatures are having a significant warm-up. you can see 70s, 80s and a few neighborhoods approaching the lower-90s. that will show up in the five day forecast. overnight lows, you will want to bundle it. morning's have a cool start. upper-40s in some areas. fremont around 54 degrees. high-pressure is beginning to strengthen. the storm track is being pushed up north. a little more activity in the pacific. rainfall to the north. a nice sunday. after morning fog, temperatures warm up.
