arizona. allie rasmus joins us from the coast guard in alameda. good afternoon, allie. >> reporter: good afternoon, once the fog clears the coast guard plans to send oftry to fi a plane wreck. half-moon bay airport is where 75-year-old andrew hayden of florida took off in his single-engine plane before 6:00 a.m. monday morning. according to the san mateo sheriff's spokeswoman he flew the plane here to visit his daughter who lives in the bay area. he was supposed to arrive in tucson yesterday afternoon but never made it. now the coast guard, airport's rescue coordination center and san mateo county sheriff's office launched a search to find any sign of the pilot and his plane. now, the plane they are searching for looks similar to the one in this picture. this is a picture provided to us at the coast guard command center. they said it's the picture they are using to search for

wreckage. an 87-foot long coast guard cutter has been out in the water overnight as well and so far no sign of this plane. >> his radar tracking had him pretty much right off half-moon bay and that was the last information they had gotten from his aircraft. >> reporter: once again the next stage their planes, a c-130 to do an aerial search near half-moon bay. i checked with the coast guard 10 minutes ago, they said they still -- it's still too foggy and they have not launched that plane yet. so the search will continue later today. live in alameda, allie rasmous, account news. a rally for scheduled at city hall this afternoon for stevens. he was one of four americans killed during the september 11th attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi. stevens glue up in the bay area, graduated from piedmont high school. the memorial is scheduled to begin at 4:30 in the city hall

way to st. louis to play game three in the national league championship series. the team gathered at at&t park earlier this morning. ktvu was there as pitchers sergio romo and tim linscomb loaded up on the buses, to be ready for the three games to be played in busch stadium. they head to st. louis with the series tied one game apiece. ball players boarded the buses and got an escort here to sfo. we were the only camera crew here for the departure. they loaded in a secure area behind closed doors and took off in a cloud of glory with the fire hose salute from the airport. the team is set to land in a few hours. the giants set to play game three in the series tomorrow. meanwhile, ktvu crews are also headed to st. louis now. we will have team coverage for you of the nlcs in st. louis. the giants return to the bay area october 21st and 22nd for game six and seven if they are necessary and a reminder,

companion who played the president's role. tonight's debate puts the pressure on both candidates facing different circumstances. it also takes place with a different forum, fielding questions from undecided voters. reporter john roberts has a preview. >> reporter: the stage is set again for president obama and republican nominee mitt romney to face off. this time on long island not far from the big apple. the second of three presidential debates kicks off at hofstra university. romney hoping to keep the wave of momentum going his way after a well received performance in their first matchup. >> he was not only widely seen as winning the debate among registered voters by a margin of 3-1 or more, it helped him in the more importantly the national race against obama. >> reporter: president obama in damage control mode of sorts. acknowledging he didn't do so well in his first meeting with romney. his campaign promising a more energized and aggressive obama tonight. the commander in chief will also have recent positive economic numbers to help make

his case. >> people hearing better news about the economy and jobs generally. the question is how this factors into voters' decisions or not. i think this late improvement in some public perceptions about the jobs and economy could benefit obama. >> reporter: the format tonight, very different from the setup in denver. it will be a town hall style with questions asked by undecided voters in the audience. the debate sparking some controversy before it even starts. the moderator, cnn's candy crowley saying she will ask follow-up questions to the candidates. the debate is supposed to be driven by voter questions with the moderator having a limited role. both the obama and romney campaigns expressing concern saying crowley's approach is not the format the two campaigns agreed upon. in hempstead, long island, john roberts, fox news. several bay area locations are offering free viewing parties for tonight's presidential debate. in san francisco the balboa is

today we could find out if san francisco will be one of the cities in the running to host the super bowl in 2016 or 2017. nfl owners are expected to take a vote on the list at their meeting in chicago. if elected san francisco would be the host city but the game will be played at the new 49ers stadium being built in santa clara. it would be the second bay area super bowl. sanford hosted the game in 1985. a final announcement is not expected until may. the san francisco 49ers

meanwhile may be teeming with a silicon valley business to create the infrastructure in the new santa clara stadium. according to the san jose business journal brocade communication systems may be contracted for the project. financial terms were not disclosed, but brocade will build a networking system for the team's computer applications and allow fans to use wireless internet in the stadium. an overnight fire gutted a san carlos business this morning but left a fitness club next door undamaged. the fire started 12:30 a.m. at a restaurant supply company on washington street. crews arrived to a lot of heavy smoke coming out of the building. the fire went to three alarms, about a half-hour later. they say there was so much stuff in the building it was tough to get to the source of the fire. finally got under control about 2:15. >> due to the high piled storage and contents of the building the extinguishment of the fire was -- took a long time and was very difficult. >> a precautionary evacuation

was issued at a 24-hour fitness club next door. firefighters say the club wasn't damaged, there were no injuries. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. today marks seven months since morgan hill teenager sierra lamar disappeared. the 15-year-old vanished on her way to school. days later her cell phone, purse and some clothing were found near her home. investigators believe sierra is dead and angel garcia torres charged with her kidnapping and killing. tonight her family will gather in freemont for a fundraiser starting at 5:00, ken yama restaurant. more shooting investigations are now underway. several shootings yesterday left six people wounded in about six hours. the latest happened just last night after 9:45. police say two men were walking out of a liquor store near brookdale and coolidge when they were shot. one of the victims is said to be in critical condition.

police are also investigating three other shootings that injured four people yesterday. no arrests have been made in any of the cases. early yesterday morning a 21-year-old man was shot and killed in east oakland. it's the 100th homicide of the year so far in the city. police say the victim was walking by himself on hilton street near 57th avenue when he was shot. he was taken to highland hospital where he later died. at this time last year oakland police were investigating 95 homicides. a court-appointed monitor overseeing oakland police reform says he's shocked by the lack of progress. robert warshaw says the police department took a step back falling out of compliance with one of its important tasks of creating a monitoring system to track officers who are engaging in bad behavior. it's the latest report before a federal judge hears arguments in december about whether to place the department under federal control. the mountainview city

council is scheduled to hear two appeals tonight of a decision to allow a chick-fil-a restaurant to open. one appeal claims noise and air pollution will negatively impact people who live near the proposed site on west el camino real. another report says the driverthrough will lead to more collisions between cars and bicyclists. chick-fil-a generated controversy as well after the ceo spoke out against gay marriage. congresswoman jack hosting a ninth job fair in san mateo today. about three dozen companies are participating in the job hunters boot camp on saratoga drive at the event center. she says the jobless rate dropped but remains disproportionately high at 53% for recent college graduates. she says the fare is a good first step toward landing that first job. recruiters say they are very busy trying to fill current positions and lined up candidates for the future. >> i've been in the recruiting

industry for a number of years now. i think the last couple of years has actually been very busy from a critics' standpoint. i think the economy is better than the news might say. >> the job hunters event runs through 2:00 p.m. and features workshops to improve job search and interviewing skills. an aggressive panhandler arrested for punching a man who refused to give him money. authorities say the victim was on a break from his job in downtown palo alto when the incident happened. investigators say jesus gabriel cruz punched the man several times and searched his pockets when he refused the plea for money. cruz has been booked in jail on an investigation of attempted robbery. san francisco police say a man was critically injured in an early morning brawl in the mission district at 16th and valencia. we spoke with a neighbor who witnessed the fight about 2:00 a.m. he said one man was being attacked and police report seeing 20 to 30 people in the brawl when they arrived.

the victim was unresponsive when taken to the hospital this morning. we have calls into police to get the latest on his condition. more than 56 million social security recipients found out this morning how much their monthly payments will go up next year. social security payments will go up 1.7% in january. this number is tied to inflation and it's one of the smallest increases since 1975. residents in oakland are not too happy about a safeway expansion project. tonight they will voice their concerns to the city council. the store is currently a single story building on college avenue. this past july oakland's planning commission approved a project to replace the store with a two-story building with several storefronts and underground parking. opponents say the expansion will increase traffic and hurt local businesses. today a federal appeals court in washington, dc takes up the debate over medical marijuana. the oakland-based group
