himself a lot more this debate. he didn't let romney take the upper hand. >> reporter: we found some undecided voters who say the debate did sway them slightly. >> i feel like romney had a stronger point. >> after tonight i felt obama had a slight edge in the debate. i felt he gave better points. especially at the end. >> i'm a registered republican but leaning more towards obama. >> reporter: many felt the town hall format was interesting. >> i think the format was a little awkward at first. over the course of the debate they got a little more comfortable. >> you got to see them interact. you don't goat see that often in a debate. this was an opportunity for them to engage one on one. >> reporter: tonight students were handing out these forms. voter turnout being a big

25-year-old heather carroll died of blunt force trauma and strangulation. her body was found saturday. investigators say he told them they had had an argument and that carroll died last wednesday. that was the day she disappeared. >> apple is inviting the press to the south bay next tuesday as it plans to unveil its next new product. this time the event isn't happening in san francisco. it's being held at the california theater in san jose. the words on the invite read, we've got a little more to show you. analysts say the word little is a big hint here. wall street analysts say apple is poised to unveil an ipad mini. online retailer amazon.com says it is hiring 50,000 seasonal employees this year. the addedworkers will help process online orders at the

company's 40 fulfillment. >> registered nurses are going public with their concerns about staffing levels. the nurses say hospital staffing is at a minimum standard and that is putting patients at risk. they want more nurses in all hospital departments. a vice president told us the hospital meets all state requirements for staffing and it does add nurses when necessary. >> in berkeley opponents of a ballot measure that would restrict when people can sit on the sidewalk carried giant puppets to the meeting. it represented leaders who spoke up for the poor and downtrodden. measure s on next month's ballot would prohibit people

from sitting or lying on the sidewalks from 7 in the morning until 10:00 at night. opponents say this would criminalize the homeless. supporters say it's needed. too many people are loitering near businesses, harassing customers and making it difficult for them to do business. >> a red flag warning for parts of the bay area. areas affected and how long it will last. >> the 49ers stadium isn't completed yet, but the nfl could throwing its biggest party here. the announcement today that could lead to a super bowl in the south bay. >> what the thieves may not have known about this puppy that could cause big problems.

arrested. investigators say the homicide may have been gang related. billy brooks jr. has been identified as the man found shot to death and wrapped in a blanket in oakland last week. his body was found in the backseat of a car on richie street. so far police say no arrests have been made and they don't have a motive. a $10,000 reward is being offered leading to the arrest of the killer. >> an emotional rally on the steps of an oakland courthouse today. the mother of a teenager who was shot and killed by a police officer said she will not rest until there is a full investigation. calling the district attorney's investigation into the shooting both shoty and unprofessional. it falls on her now to speak for her dead son. >> why did you shoot him? you should be held accountable. this will not go on in our

community. >> the district attorney says it is not going to press charges against officer miguel monto who shot and killed blueford. the da said he acted reasonably believing his life was in danger. blueford's family says he would never point a gun at an officer and claims that allen was racially profiled. >> mourners gathered for a heart felt memorial service this afternoon in honor of u.s. ambassador who was killed in a terrorist attack in libya. chris stevens was hailed as a hero, a brother, and a man who died trying to make the world a better place. >> reporter: under the dome of san francisco city hall they came from near and far to pay tribute to a california man who built bridges between the united states and the world. >> chris, thank you. >> reporter: john christopher

a search crew has located burned wreckage of a missing plane. the coroner is trying to identify the remains after pilot. the crash site is only about a

mile from the half-moon bay airport. ktvu's john sasaki tells us investigators have a good idea who was in that plane. >> reporter: on a windy bluff search crews discovered a crash site in morning one day a a plane disappeared. sheriffs officials escorted our camera near the wreckage. >> if it's burned, mangled wreckage is what it is. >> reporter: yesterday morning a plane took off from the airport heading for arizona. it never reached its refueling destination and the wife of 75- year-old andrew hayden of florida called in a missing person's report. the search quickly began. >> we do have a sheriffs office supervisor that has been in contact with the family as well as this afternoon and with discovery of the wreckage. >> reporter: any markings or

numbers were destroyed. human remains were also badly burned. this has yet officially confirmed. >> i think a reasonable person would assume this is the plane. but, again, without any characteristics, definitively, i can't say that. >> reporter: it's now up to the coroner to confirm the pilot's identity. investigators from the national transportation safety board will be here at the airport and at the crash site tomorrow morning to try to determine what caused this crash. in half-moon bay. >> police in san francisco are looking for five men. police say at least seven men were fighting around 2:00 this morning in the mission district. five people ran. officials say a 44-year-old man was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries. another man was also taken to the hospital, but is expected to survive.

>> san francisco's metropolitan transportation agency unanimously approved major changes for bike riders on two heavily traveled streets. this is what the bike lanes would now look like. there would be a separated lane for bicyclists next to it a buffer lane then lanes of traffic and just one lane for parking. the changes will be between scott and bakers streets. it would also mean the loss of about 55 parking spaces. cal trans is shutting down the san mateo bridge in both directions this weekend and next. they'll put in place a permanent fixture for a cracked beam and allow them to do some seismic work. it's scheduled to be closed friday the 19th at 10:00 p.m. and will remain closed until october 22nd at 5:00 a.m. >> all that and money for schools goes directly to

the vice mayor has stepped down from his post. joe madrono resigned just days after a jury ticket convicted him of embezzling almost $160,000 in his personal business. clayton's mayor says the resignation was the right thing for the city. >> he deal with this issue as a personal issue and get it out from being a city issue. >> he has maintained his innocence and has said he plans to appeal. he faces up to four years in prison. >> the sheriffs department is asking for help in finding a 77- year-old man. investigators say the family of john mcconeghy couldn't find him. he is 5'9" and weighs about 160

pounds. he has gray hair and blue eyes. he also reportedly suffers from dementia. the san francisco fire department says last week's four-alarm fire caused an estimated $7 million in damage. three buildings were damaged in that fire. one of them housed the popular squat and gobble restaurant. authorities say it does not appear that it was suspicious. >> in news of the world tonight, thieves broke into a museum and stole seven works of art that could be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. they belonged to a private collection and were being shown publicly together for the first time. one expert said the thieves knew exactly what they were after. an accused computer hacker will not be extradited to the u.s. he's accused of carrying out one of the biggest computer

millions of dollars on the line. molly mungers prop 38 will give voters a chance to raise their own taxes and deliver billions of dollars to california schools desperately in need of more money. prop 38 could be a measure that does more harm than good. >> reporter: more than 10,000 public schools in california. this no two ballot initiatives. governor brown's proposition 30 and proposition 38 funded almost entirely by one person. >> when i went to those schools they were funded fifth highest in the entire united states. >> reporter: a civil rights attorney has invested more than $30 million of her own money.

why? she says to pay it forward. in doing so she is in direct competition with governor brown's proposition 30. >> 38 does two things that are important. it raises eight times more money for schools than 30. all that money for schools goes directly to schools. >> reporter: the governor's prop 30 and prop 38 are competing measures. you will see they both fund education. but that the similarities mostly end there. proposition 30 raises the sales tax for four years and the income tax for seven years on those making more than $250,000. prop 38 raises the income tax on all but the poorest californians for about 12 years. 30 generates about $6 billion initially. 38 raises $10 billion a year for schools. >> that's enough to restore all

the cuts and bring us back to a well rounded education. where kids have art and music and physical education. >> reporter: most of the money from proposition 38 would go to k through 12 and early childhood education with local schools or charters deciding how money is spent with public input. >> prop 38 sends billions straight to our local schools. >> reporter: tv ads claim politicians won't be able to touch 38's money. but no on 38 chair says there's a catch. >> my kindergartner is going to be in the second grade before she sees any of the benefits. >> reporter: kinney calls 3 a well intentioned but poorly worded proposition. >> the flaw is it creates a $6 billion budget hole which is going to be cut out in year

one. >> reporter: that budget hole wasn't created by the plan. it's tied up in the recently passed state budget in which democratic lawmakers hope to fill that gap with the passage of the governor's proposition. even if they get above 50% of the vote, only one can become law. >> somebody is telling you that if you don't help pass this thing you will be punish. money will be taken away from your kids and sent to other needs in the state. >> reporter: voters must decide if the governor's less expensive short term tax hike to soften school cuts is better than the long term tax increase aimed at restoring california schools or if the answer is no to taxes, none of the above. >> a ktvu.com.
