"mornings on 2" begins right now. well, good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's wednesday, october 17th. happening now, oracle team usa will pick up the pieces of its severely damaged racing yacht out of the bay today. the 72-foot ka that ma ran crashed in dramatic fashion. alex savidge is live in san francisco to let us know how this is affecting the team? >> reporter: a major setback for the team as they are getting ready to race in the america's cup. the boat flipped and had it to be towed back here to team headquarters at pier 80 in san francisco t was towed back late

last night. the damaged -- san francisco. it was towed back here late last night. this was the scene yesterday. it all happened yesterday at 3:00 during a training run on the bay near san francisco. there were 11 oracle team members but none of them were seriously hurt. the capsized boat was caught by a strong tide and drifted. several miles past the bridge. crew members say this accident was triggered by strong winds close to 30 miles an hour an a -- and a swift current on the bay. surreal feeling. we've been pushing the boat all of the time. we found our limit today. there is a pretty big crash. >> reporter: crew members say

the platform of the boat appears to be in good shape. the team will have to get a closer look at the other damage. that will happen at some point this morning. this accident, hurts the oracle team. and they have less time in the water to prepare to begin their title -- defend their title in the race next year. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. pittsburg police say they arrested a career criminal at the scene of a crash. the man was in this suv which hit a tree in front of an ihop restaurant during a police chase. the tree stopped the car from crashing into the ihop. the suspect jumped into the suv

after crashing a different car after he assaulted an individual in antioch. we have new details about a missing man whose body has been found in the santa cruz mountains. ann ruben is here to tell us why authorities have now launched a homicide investigation. >> reporter: just got word that the body of eric garcia has been found. monday an autopsy confirmed that garcia was the victim of a homicide. he was last seen october 18th, leaving a party in san jose. he took off on his motorcycle but never returned. they are still looking for the harley-davidson as well as any other clues. his family held a vigil calling him a big teddy bear with a big heart. police say they are looking for the public's help. >> right now, you know, anybody

with any information as to, you know, the incident itself and anybody who comes more information, please give us a call. >> reporter: in the meantime, the family members say that funeral arrangements for garcia are still being finalized. ann ruben, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:04. well, the santa clara county district attorney's office has now cleared a san jose police officer in the shooting death in the man they say had a gun. police shot and killed carlo moreno. the d.a.'s report says the officer was justified because moreno threatened police officers with a gun. there was also cocaine in moreno's system. he shot and killed two san jose state students just days before

police shot him. president obama and mitt romney came out swinging in their second debate last night. >> the president's policies have been exercised over the last four years and they haven't put americans bark to work. we have fewer people working today -- >> coming up at 7:15, the winner of the debate, according to the overnight polls. here in the bay area, some students at st. mary's college gathered to watch the debate and share their reaction. >> i feel like obama stands for the minority. i have always been a obama supporter. >> i think that romney did a very good job. he was able to nail obama really, really well on pivotal points that will be important for this election. reports of a shared workspace for computer programmers in silicon valley may have solved a compliance

problem. the company discovered the problem and the business plans to move in this december. the san mateo bridge is temporarily closing the day after tomorrow. caltrans will shut down the span for the weekend so crews can about out there and make quake repairs. they plan to fix a cracked beam. the san mateo bridge will close this friday, october 19th. it's due to reopen at 5:00 a.m. the bridge will be closed the next weekend, the following weekend, too, for the very same reason 7:07. let's check in with sal. how is the east shore freeway? >> it's a -- it's a little busy

increase for violent crimes since 1993. the information comes for the department of justices national crimes survey. in colorado last night, about 2,000 mourners attended a memorial service for 10-year- old jessica ridgeway. the little girl's body was discovered last week on a remote road. authority says days before that she was abduct on her way to school in suburban denver. authorities have ruled out her parents as suspects. the search for her killer continues. 7:18. the man accused in the death of a -- of a young mother in hollister has entered a plea of not guilty. authorities say heather carroll died of blunt-force trauma and she was strangled. on saturday her body was found in the home of a family friend following a police standoff. investigators say he told him that carroll died after they had an argument on wednesday. bail for the man is set at $1.5

7:28. new this morning, a disturbing call for violence as occupy oakland prepares to mark an anniversary. tara moriarty joins us live to talk about fliers causing concern with the police and the residents. >> reporter: the flier popped over the weekend. it was taped to the oakland tribune office downtown. it's urging people who come this thursday to bring baseball bats. now, the bats are not to create vandalism but in an effort to stop and to beat up anarchists.

last year, they did a raid on frank ogawa plaza. now, the flier came to from a group called "doom." >> i can understand their motivation in the sense of their wanting to protect oakland and make sure that people are taken -- taking care of the city and wanting to -- wanting to use their energies for more positive forces. i wouldn't agree with that tactic. >> reporter: councilmember few entase called this crazy. police are saying they will not tolerate -- fuentes called this -- called thiszy.

the oracle team tries to pick up the pieces. crew members are trying to figure out the best way to lift the 72-foot catamaran out of the water they've gone in here. they've attached the boat to a crane, a large crane up above and now they are just starting to lift up a piece of the boat right now. it flipped yesterday and then floated out to see after that. and then crew members worked late into the night towing the boat back to team headquarters. i want to show you the scene yesterday as the oracle team had rescued -- had to be rescued. 11 members were on board. none of them were serious -- seriously hurt. the boat was capsized and went four miles past the bridge. the accident was caused by strong winds, close to 30 miles
