here. >> and a meteor causes confusion over the y area. where people think it landed. >> and a big pile of dirt is sitting outside of san francisco city hall. how it's tied to a big event causing a big controversy. mornings on 2 begins now. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning. welcome. i'm dave clark. >> i'm claudine wong. we are continuing to follow developing news out of castro valley. crews responded to a fire at a home on san carlos shortly after midnight. they found a body at the back of the house and alex savage said the fire is suspicious. >> reporter: that's the information we just got from a lieutenant. they have shut off the entire

section of the street. we are being kept back from the home. this death is deemed suspicious by investigators. the body still inside this house. investigators right now are canvassing the neighborhood and talking to people nearby. they are waiting for a search warrant to go in and get evidence inside the house. we are show you what it looked like earlier. it started with reports of a small fire just after midnight. crews put the fire out and found a person dead inside this house on the 2400 block of san carlos. one neighbor noticed the fire but didn't see much in the way of flames, just a lot of smoke. a lieutenant was asked if the body inside had signs of trauma. he said none that he could report. he was also asked if it's a homicide investigation. this was his response. >> not yet. the reason i say not yet is we have no determination that there is a crime here

committed. sometimes people die in fires and it's an accident or something of that nature. also people die in fires based on homicide. we aren't that far into the investigation to determine which is which. >> reporter: the lieutenant said there was nobody else inside the home at the time aside from the victim. it was a neighbor in the area who reported the fire and called the police. now other neighbors are saying that a retired san francisco firefighter lived in this particular house with his girlfriend though we are getting other information just a few moments ago -- a neighbor said she believes and understands that retired firefighter is out of town right now. again investigators are still here. they aren't releasing information on this victim. a name, an age or a gender. they are waiting for the search warrant and they will go inside. live this morning in castro

valley. >> and the story you will only see on 2. a candidate for oakland city council was leading standing near his car when he felt something poke him in the back. he turned to see a man pointing a gun at him. he is running on a platform of cutting back on crime. >> just says no neighborhood is safe. some are worse than others, no question. >> reporter: dan kalb found the situation ironic. >> one man is in custody after barricade canning himself inside a house. police officers and the swat team gathered starting at 9:00 last night. police say about two hours later the man gave up peace approximatefully. still not clear what triggered that standoff. a viewing scheduled for a

woman from hercules who was found inside her home. she was stabbed on october 5th. her body was found by neighbors. two suspects, darnell keith washington and tania washington were arrested last week. police say they were driving a car that was stolen from the victim's home. tonight's viewing will be held at saint patrick's church beginning at 6:00 p.m. >> a fantastic sight in the bay area skies. ann is live in san jose with video of a meteor sighting. >> reporter: probably a lot of hunters gearing up to search for remnants of that fire ball that broke up over the bay area last night. it happened about 7:45 p.m. and several people were able to get photographs and video of it as it streaked across the sky. it was both bright and loud. some say it sounded like an explosion and shook their

homes. experts say that was it going faster than the speed of sound and falling apart. it was probably about the size of a car when it broke up and fell to earth near the martinez hills area. while there is a shower expected this weekend experts say this one makes them question if it's related. police officers were fielding questions from confused drivers left and right. >> i'm at -- willow cove and i saw -- and it kind of went away in the middle of the sky. i don't think it hit anything. >> reporter: the whole thing lasted about five seconds. online people have been posting about it. one person described it as mysterious and beautiful. another said it seemed more like something out of the end of the world disaster movie. live in san jose. >> and we want to see your pictures of that. you can share them on facebook. it's time to drop, cover

behind that is a colder system. most of this is tracking north but some of that could rotate around. the bigger news how cool it'll be. 57 game time and then 40 as we get toward the 6th and 7th inning. more clouds, kind of cool and breezy. for us we are looking for a change in the weather. it may be morning, very mild, afternoon, that west wind will kick in because the leading edge of what will be a dramatic cooldown is starting to move in but it's not here yet. 44, santa rosa. 61 officially in the city though i have seen at ocean beach 66. just unbelievable differences in the temperatures. we are seeing a real reversal. temperatures mild on the coast. easterly breeze, 70's, 80s and 80s. temperatures i think are close, still a fire warning or watch. red flag warning, another about 51 minutes. it should end at eight.

accessible. she is disappointed but can't change it. the family of a former candidate said he is now on life support and no longer responsive. the 90-year-old former senator was admitted to hospice two days ago. he had several illnesses. he was the 1972 nominee who lost to president nixon. he later was the first global ambassador for hunger. >> investigators waiting for autopsy reports before they tell us the name of the pilot killed in that small plane crash near half moon bay. we already know the plane was registered to a pilot from florida. that pilot was reported missing monday when he didn't land as scheduled in arizona. search crews found the wreck on tuesday less than a mile from the airport. its been a bad year for west nile virus nationwide.

the cdc received more than 4500 reports of human cases here in 2012. 183 of the people have died. california has had nearly 300 cases and 11 of them were deadly. the cdc said the peak of the disease was in august. alameda now has it's first human case of west nile. a man from livermore tested positive after becoming sick last month. he is recover canning -- recovering though. often people over the age of 50 and those with weak immune systems are the most at risk. >> a man filed a complaint claiming at&t won't let him use face time to talk to his wife and kids. he file that after at&t blocked customers who have unlimited data plans using the feature. in the complaint he said the only reason he upgraded was to use the face time video chat

feature to talk to his family when he travels. at&t said customers can switch to a different plan. plan to reorganize the assets of solyndra could be bad news. the foe -- the plan could leave taxpayers with little money in the aftermath of the collapse of that company. >> time, 7:17, a new report is out saying it pays to work at google. the jobs information website called glass door surveyed 15 high tech companies. it found that google paid engineers the most. about $128,000. facebook was two on that list. it's engineers made 123,000, followed by apple, e-bay and zynga.

>> the san mateo bridge shuts down tomorrow night and you won't be able to use it all weekend. workers need to close it to install a new i-beam. a clean will be used to remove 12 sections of that bridge deck to get to the cracked beam. >> that crane will pick up the old deck sections, pick up the new ones, put them in place. >> the bridge will be closed tomorrow night at ten and won't reopen until monday morning at five. if you have to travel you will be asked to use the bay bridge or just drive around. target is planning to open a second store, that just a week after the grand opening of their first city location. the store will replace the old mervyn's. me plan to hire 250 work s. the opening is scheduled for october of 2013.

>> a 21-year-old is in jail this morning charged with a terrorist plot to try to blow up the federal reserve building in new york city. the fbi said he came to the united states in january on a student visa. he told undercover agents he wanted to destroy america by going after the financial institutions. >> he goes to the new york stock exchange, he sees that the significant security there and he shifts his target to the federal reserve bank. >> the fbi set up a sting. the man was later arrested when he tried to use a cell phone to set off what he thought was a huge bomb hidden inside a van parked outside the federal reserve bank. >> another warm day across the bay area. let's take a live look outside at this beautiful morning. some big changes in store this weekend. >> and turning back the clock.

. welcome back. 7:22. a man shot and killed in oakland was apparently targeted because of a minor fender bender. that's according to police. they just released this new surveillance video hoping will catch the suspects. the video shows the 23-year-old charles butler bumping a car while parking outside a store. that led to an argument inside the store. police say butler was later killed the next day by two men linked with the car that he hit. butler's mother is pleading for

justice. >> we just want to live a life where we know that justice has been served and we no longer have to walk around with our heads down and our hearts hurting. >> oakland police are trying to identity the suspect car described as an early model four door lexus. it may have been a dark green or black. if you have any information call oakland police. >> in health news, stanford researchers may have found a key to staying young. they connected the blood system of an old and young mouse mixing their blood together and the study found that young blood reverses some effects of aging. the number of stem cells in the brains of older mice also rose. they hope it can eventually treat alzheimer's. a bad if night's sleep can put you at risk for memory

which said officers are required to work overtime right now. right now oakland has 629 officers compared to 837 four years ago. a police academy is underway right now and two more are planned but until they graduate the city is considering paying sheriff deputies and highway patrol officers for months. in overnight two people are in custody after an armed robbery in oakland. that happened at 1:30. someone was held up at gun point in a car on 45th avenue. nobody was hurt. >> police are searching for a missing at risk teen girl. the 15-year-old ruby cruz mendoza was last seen getting in to the car with another man. reportedly the two may be in a relationship. the car reportedly described as tan or silver colored, two door, if you have information

call the police. a sad milestone tomorrow for the family of sierra lamar, the missing teen. it would have been her 16th birthday. she disappeared seven months ago on her way to school. investigators say she is dead. they have charged a man with her kidnapping and murder. family members and friends are still holding out hope. weekly volunteer searches continue even though they have been scaled back to only on saturday. >> a red flag warning is in effect in the mountains. in san leandro there are extra firefighters on duty. that red flag warning is set to expire in about 30 minutes. people in santa barbara are being allowed to return home as firefighters continue to make progress on a brush fire. that fire started early yesterday morning, at one point it threatened a hundred homes in the painted cave community.

while spending $414,000 on initial repairs. the total cost of repairing the tower could be as much as three million dollars. they say making the repairs will give them time to race money for all the renovations to save. fire at chevron is creating increased monitoring of air quality. they will have new rules on tracking pollution from refineries. they will hire outside experts to suggest ways to improve the air monitoring system. they say the fire showed the system is geared toward measuring pollution over the long term rather than during big releases. >> time just turning 7:39. what's happening on highway 101? >> it'll be slow in san francisco and there is a crash, 101 southbound as you approach the 280 interchange. you can see southbound 101 is pretty slow around the corner. northbound 101 is okay coming up to the downtown area but if

the sky's my limit. . taking a look at the big board. some stocks are doing well, the dow is still down. the market is down across the board. some blaming those jobless numbers and let's talk about those numbers. economists are saying don't be fooled by this morning's report. unemployment benefit numbers are -- applications jumped 46,000 to 388,000. the government said that the -- the significant increases because of timing as it just processed application that were deplayed from -- were delayed from last week.

and collect more evidence. a lieutenant with the alameda county sheriff said this death is suspicious though he stopped short of calling it a homicide investigation. this all started when neighbors reported a fire just after midnight. when crews arrived finally knocked down the flames they found a person dead inside the house. it's here on the 2400 block of san carlos avenue. this scene was then turned over to sheriff's investigators and this morning during a briefing the lieutenant we talked to was asked if the body inside had any signs of trauma. he said none that he could report. several neighbors said that the homeowner is a retired san francisco firefighter who lives at the house with his girlfriend. i talked to one neighbor who knows the homeowner and was surprised to see it. >> when i looked out i said what is happening here? finally open the door and i said -- i see something is wrong. i can't -- i can't see him having anything to do with the

body. >> reporter: another neighbor that we talked to this morning believes that the retired firefighter, the homeowner here is actually out of town right now on vacation. that is her belief. that's her understanding. investigators haven't given us any information, they have given us nothing on the victim, not even saying if it's a man or woman. the body that's been found inside this house. again investigators with the alameda sheriff's office remain on scene. they have hoped this off as a crime scene. they are waiting for a search warrant. this investigation could take a long time. live this morning in castro valley. >> one man is in custody after barricading himself inside his oakland home. police officers and the swat team were seen beginning at 9:00 last night. police say about two hours later the man gave up peacefully. viewing is being held today for the woman found dead inside

vote yes on thirty-eight. . a man shot and killed in oakland was apparently targeted because of a minor fender bender. that's according to police who released new surveillance video. it shows the 23 -year-old charles butler bump a car while parking outside a store on 45th and market last december. that led to an argument inside the store. police say butler was killed the next day by two men associated with the car he hit. butler's family is pleading for witnesses to come forward. >> i know -- that there are people out there who have the -- that when they see this video it'll touch their heart that they have to come forward and have these guys charged because they are dangerous. >> police say they are looking

people said they saw a bright fire ball in the sky around 7:30 last night. heard the sonic boom too. we are bring you the live report on how all of that distracted drivers, that's in a few minutes. the house fire in castro valley being called suspicious after a woman's body was found in the house. firefighters first rushed there to that home around midnight. alex savage has been there since 4:30. >> reporter: we just got a briefing a short time ago from a spokesman for the sheriff's office saying that the reason they believe this fire and the death that resulted from it is suspicious is an accelerant appears to have been used. the body of that woman still inside this house that's just up the street from where we are. investigators are still waiting out outside of the home.

a spokesman we talked to stopped short of calling a homicide investigation. it all started just after midnight when neighbors reported a fire at this house. this is on the 2400 block of san carlos avenue. fire crew was able to come in and put out the fire. they aren't saying where the body was found, how she died is unclear. there is no known trauma to her body. several people said the homeowner is a retired firefighter who lives here with his girlfriend. a briefing a spokesman described the suspicious nature of the fire. >> when the fire department arrived, they believe that an accelerant had been used and any time that happens and you have a body that's automatically suspicious. >> reporter: investigators have not yet identified the woman found dead. they can't even give us the age

for her. they are waiting for a search warrant from a judge to be signed so that they can go inside the house and september. they will bring out their crime lab and arson investigators will be out here at some point. they expect it'll take much of the day to process the crime scene. we are live. alex savage. >> and now to a story you are only going to see on two. a city council candidate became the victim of a crime after leaving a meeting about fighting crime in oakland. sam cook with the story. >> reporter: dan kahlb called police and said he was robbed right in of the neighborhoods he is trying to make safer. he is run to city -- he is running for city council in oakland and he was going home from a meeting addressing the crime issues in the city. he was on his cell phone shortly after nine last night. he said he felt something poke him in the back and turned to see a man pointing a gun at

him. >> i hear crime, crime, crime in almost every part of the district. you know it's -- now i feel it firsthand. >> reporter: he said that the man demanded his wallet. later his neighbors called to tell him that his car doors were left open and he found his car had been ransacked and his phone was also gone. now he described the incident as ironic since he is running on an anti crime platform. >> 21-year-old is in jail charged with a terrorist plot to blow up the federal reserve building in new york. the fbi said that the man came to the united states in january on a student visa. he told undercover agents he wanted to destroy america by going after the country's financial institutions. there are also reports that he discussed wanting to target the president. >> he gets the student visa

. a meteor shower rights up the night skies and ann is live in san jose where she just spoke to a sciencist about the unusual sighting. >> reporter: that's right. it was a startling sight. the met, eor stopped some in their tracks and prompted others to call the police. it was overhead about 7:45 last night. it could be seen from santa cruz to napa and beyond.

some people even managed to get it on camera. it only la about five seconds but it appeared to be a bright white orb with a tail. it made a loud boom and then broke apart. it was probably about the size of a car, then fell to earth near the martinez hills area. despite the fact there is a meteor shower expected this weekend they don't think this is related. >> the timing is wrong. the direction is wrong. so it's probably one that is called a sporadic. >> we were coming home from water bowl game and i was driving and -- he was -- i just saw a shooting star and -- i was like probably a plane landing or -- not a shooting star but he was excited about it. we didn't hear anything but he was really excited soy guess i should have believed him.
