not today. fog is back. now it's mainly low clouds here impacting us. temperatures today starting their trend down. 60s and 70s and a few low 80s. if you are driving on highway 4, you can see it here highway 4 pretty crowded in antioch. a little slow traffic in pittsburgh. it still looks good in bay point as you drive over the point. also the willow commute continues. we begin our 6:00 hour with developing story. officers tried to pull over the suspects car at eddy and lagoon that streets at 2:00 this morning. the suspects did not stop and drove off. they fired at police. no officers were hit. they did crash into a taxi. officers say the entire incident could have been far

worse. >> the fact that they -- you don't know what you're coming up on. in this case now the officers know what they're coming up on goes to show you need to be cautious. >> police were able to catch one of the suspects. the other managed to escape. the taxi driver suffered minor injuries in that crash. alex savidge is out there on the scene. we'll have an update in 30 minutes. time now 6:01. a deadly overnight shooting in oakland is under investigation right now. it happened at 106 and voltaire avenues at 9:00 p.m.. the victims body was found on the sidewalk about a block from a shopping center. right now we don't know the man's name or a possible motive for that shooting. oakland police also investigating another shooting it happened at 79th avenue. that one happened at 8:30 last night. we have very few details though. the victim was rushed to the hospital. we have no word on the victims condition. the san mateo bridge will shut down later tonight and

stay closed for the entire weekend. ktvu tara moriarty is live in hayward right now to tell us about the work that will be done and how you can get around that closure. tara. >> reporter: big repair job going on this weekend and next. the dead tour starts at 10:00 tonight and will run until 5:00 monday morning. here's what cal tran crews plan on doing. installing a new seismic joint. it's all along a crashed beam. discovered during a routine inspection back in october of 2010. the reason they picked this weekend well it's still dry outside and it's not game aged don like we had. >> when we weighed all the factors, this was one of the better times to close it. >> reporter: and the niners of course not playing this weekend here. new repairs are being paid for

by congressional employees rose sharply over the past five years. that is a according to a new report. the congressional office of compliance review shows 142 people claimed discrimination harassment and hostile work environments in 2011. it's about three times as many in 2007. the report is designed to see if the law enacted in 1995 is having an impact. it requires congress to comply with the same rules as as private sector employers in terms of discrimination. time 6:04. >> happening right now it's something that could impact the way people get paid in the south bay. ktvu ann rubin is at san jose state. ann. >> reporter: the students are camped out right now. they are hoping to draw attention to the measure on the ballot this november. they want the minimum wage raised from $8 an hour to $10.

they say simply $8 an hour is hard to live on. not everyone thinks this is a good idea. yesterday oakland a's owner lou wolf came out against the measure and some business owners who don't think they can absorb the cost. >> the way the economy it will be hard. >> they will talk about job less and there will be a threat, they did that in san francisco and other places but the job losses didn't materialize when the ordnance went into effect. >> reporter: proponents of measure d say that cities that have raised the minimum wage found there has also been less turnover among workers to. they plan to be camped out here on campus until 7:00 a.m.. live in san jose ann rubin. time is 6:06. for the first time in his 115 year history, the big game

between cal and stanford is in october. they will fight for the ax tomorrow. and th ye is the 30th anniversary of the play. 1982 remember? cal scored that winning touchdown after five laterals. look at that. big hit. the big game is traditionally held on the third saturday of november. but this year the pac 12 athletic director said that caused problems for the league master schedule. the traditional friday night bonfire rally has been changed because there is a bob dillon concert at the greek theater. students will hold a rally at edward's field instead. the oakland raiders playing this weekend against jacksonville. that came could be blacked out. locally on television. however the nfl is giving the raiders a one-day extension to sell more tickets. because of a new rule they can declare a sellout if they sell 85% of their tickets. the raiders will be playing the jacksonville jaguars sunday.

the raiders are coming off a loss to the falcons. the jaguars had a bye week. right now 6:07. i want to check back in with sal. any problems for the commute? >> no problems. as a matter of fact we are doing pretty well. we are thinking about the traffic on across the bridges and checking that. it still looks pretty good. there is a little bit of a backup at the toll plaza but it's not a huge backup. also the morning commute looks good on interstate 880 in oakland. there are no major problem there is. and if you're driving in san jose also a nice drive. so i don't know what is going on, maybe we will have a friday light or just a little bit early. steve. >> sal. >> my schools play their rivalry games this weekend. my high schools game. cal-stanford, big sports weekend. >> you know i'm a stanford fan. >> i know.

we have st. louis cloudy, light rain right now. it looks like it will be better this evening but not very warm. mostly cloudy. temperatures upper 40s and low 50s. the rain should end but it will be a cool and breeze s pattern for us you can see some gray. from yesterday to nothing. it was warm. it was hot as you know coast bay inland temperatures just as warm by the waters edge. today everything comes roaring down. i mean some of the low clouds are coming in. ann tweeted me i can see clear clouds that are moving fast. everything says we are taking the temperatures down. today and tomorrow is low clouds. 50s and 60s. kind of mild air mass. delta breeze is back and picking up in intensity. temperatures will drop 25 degrees by the coast. fog is back.

time now 6:12. new information about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. the cia station chief in libya sent a cable to washington within 24 hours of the attack. saying it was carried out by militants not by a mob angry about an antimuslim movie. the obama administration said publicly for a week that the attack that killed four americans was a result of mobs

that were protesting around the muslim world because of that movie. los angeles police department announced it's opening up dozens of murders that could have ties to the manson family. police are in a legal battle to obtain audio tapes recorded in 1969 between manson follower charles watson and his attorney. the recordings were made after watson's arrest for his role in the deaths of sharon tate and rosemary. the colorado movie theater with a gunman killed 12 people and injured dozens of others is being renovated. it's in response to a survey sent to 6,000 people asking what should be done to the building. 70% said it should be remodeled and reopened. stunning new poll out this

morning. one of them any way. showing mitt romney opening his biggest lead yet nationwide. but as alison burns report there is are other polls out showing the president making important gains. >> reporter: this morning analysts are talking about the possibility of romney winning the popular vote but president obama taking the race. two men shared the same stage in new york last night as a new gallup poll was released showing romney up by 7 points nationally. the other showed the president making gains in iowa and wisconsin. both candidates got some laughs at vice president joe biden's expense. >> i was actually hoping the president would bring joe biden along this evening. because he will laugh at anything. >> for people to say barack you're not as young as you used to be. where is that golden smile? where is that pep in your step?

the new stadium is scheduled to open just in time for the 2014 season. 6:18 is the time. sal what are you keeping an eye on traffic? >> we're looking a the contra costa county pam and dave. we will start with highway 4 this time around. and check it out here. this camera allows us to see a good stretch of highway 4. the traffic is moderately heavy. when you get to the bay bridge toll plaza it has filled in. it is backed up to the 880 overcrossing. if you are driving in san jose traffic does look good on 101. a little bit of slowing just near 880. i'm pleased to say right now in the south bay we are off to a decent start. let's go to steve. thank you, sal. happy friday. even though we have fog back it's still rather mild for

some. sfo is 66 degrees. it was so warm yesterday that some of the warm air hasn't been mixed out yet. but it will be fog is back. we are getting more of a beryl breeze. or at least a southerly breeze. yesterday was that final day for very, very warm weather and record highs. today the fog comes back. much cooler. by sunday increasing clouds. cold front gets near. westerly breeze is picking up. still a southerly breeze for some. more westerly than i expect. temperatures which were way above average are sliding down a good 20-25. fog, sun, it will be cooler. westerly breeze. low clouds, fog. there areas where the fog is low. 60s and 70s and 80s on the temps. we'll continue that theme into saturday. increasing clouds sunday. a big drop on the temps monday as it looks like the first rain from the north for the season arrives and takes us into tuesday. >> thank you, steve. >> uc san francisco medical center will cut jobs before the end of the year.

the san francisco business times reports this morning that ucsf plans to eliminate the equivalent of 300 full-time positions. the hospital says it needs to take that step as it prepares for health care reforms and other challenges. other local hospitals have announced similar cost cutting pressures. google offering a low price laptop to consumers just as microsoft and apple continues to release their major gadgets. it will sell for $249. laptop will run on an operating system reinvolving around googles chrome web browser. it goes on sale next week at best buy and online. 6:21. oakland hospital getting nationwide attention may even win an oscar at the academy awards. we'll tell you which hospital and where you can see this new documentary. potential treasure hunt after that meteor sighting in the bay area this week. thirty-eight. schools. trouble, we all should help out. under thirty-eight they do. more a year. bucks. money for schools. every school dollar must be... spent on student learning. student wins.

channel 2 morning newses. the hunt is on for the meteor that crashed in the bay area. these are shots from news chopper 2. we flew over the area yesterday but didn't notice anything unusual. whoever find part of that meteorite could strike it rich. it could be worth tens of thousands of dollars. investigators believe an accelerant was used to start a fire at a castro valley home where a woman's body was found inside. authorities spent all day yesterday at the house on san carlos avenue. the fire started early saturday morning. they are not yet calling the death a homicide. the house is owned by retired san francisco firefighter who live there is with his girlfriend but he is reportedly out of town. time is 6:25. apple just lost a legal battle against samsung in the united kingdom and apple was ordered to publicly apologize. samsung did not copy apples registered design for tablets.

the court said in part that the galaxy tablet does not infringe on apples product because the samsung products were not quote as cool. back here at home next friday is the deadline for the city of oakland to investigate problems with its e-mail system. now this stems from the possible federal takeover of the oakland police department. police chief howard jordan said he never received e-mails sent in the past week from a federal monitor. those messages involved concerns about chief jordan's recommendation to discipline several members of the police department for infractions. it's getting oscar buzz for the best documentary. starting today they will scream the entire documentary. it's called the waiting room. a film that explores how the

the administer of finance is there. earlier we showed you the new york stock exchange. there is a little mcdonalds sign there. that is because it disappointed the streak on its profit report. it was better than expected in sales but profits off and the stock is looking to open down about 3% this morning. we'll have more business news coming up. we'll smile and say born to you. thank you for joining us on ktvu channel 2 morning news. it is a friday, october 19th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm pam cook. >> at this hour san francisco police are searching for a gunman that fired shots at san francisco police just hours ago. everything started at an early morning traffic stop. ktvu alex savidge is in san francisco. you've been on this since 4:30 this morning. what do you know alex? >> that car refused to pull over for san francisco police this morning. and someone inside actually fired shots. at least one shot in the direction of officers. no one was hit though. after the shooting the car sped

off and eventually blew through this red light at franklin and eddy and collided with a taxi cab coming the other direction. the white cadillac going close to 50 miles an hour as the two men inside ran from officers. the cab driver who was hit suffered only minor injuries. the two men inside that car they got out and ran off. police eventually moved in and they were able 20 arrest the passenger but the driver escaped and still on the loose at this point. san francisco police are are telling me this began about 2:00 this morning when officers tried to make a traffic stop for a light that was out on the license plate of that car. the car never even stopped when the shooter inside just opened fire on officers. they say they were not actively pursuing the car at the time of this mornings accident. >> the fact that they activated the lights the car attempted to pull over and shot at them and took off. they didn't even have a chance to accelerate with the car to pursue it.

>> reporter: this out of control sheered off the top of a parking meter here. we watch as one of the police officers carried off the top of that meter and put it in a patrol car this morning. police have not released the identities of the two men inside that car. it's unclear at this point why they refused to pull over this morning and why they opened fire on officers. police now have the passenger in custody but they are still searching for the driver in that car. right now firefighters in lake county are battling a wild fire in clearlake. cal fire says crews have prevented that fire from moving forward. but at least 300-acres have burned. there are still mandatory evacuations in effect for the mercy springs area. the fire is about 20% contained. and fortunately so far no injuries are reported. time is 6:33. sentencing is scheduled today for a man described as the

instigator as a gang rape. manual ortega is expected to get a 32 year prison center as part of a plea deal. ortega and five other men are charged with gang raping a 16- year-old girl outside of a home coming dance back in 2009. a former hercules teacher who was killed inside of her home will be laid to rest today. funeral services for susie ko will begin at 10:00 this morning. a husband and wife from southern california have been arrested as suspects in her killing. and in a crime spree around the state. they were arrested last week in the seattle area. ktvu news investigation prompted a confrontation last night at a port of oakland board hearing. >> we are outraged. >> we are outraged. the media has exposed what we've known all along.

department plans to buy and why some say this could be an invasion of privacy. happening right now dozens of people camping out at san jose state. they are hoping to send a strong message to voters. ktvu ann rubin is in san jose with how their message could impact you. good morning, ann. >> reporter: good morning. they have been here all night as part of the seventh annual poverty under the stars event. this years focus raisings minimum wage. measure d actually originated in a sociology class here on the san jose state campus. it seeks to raise the minimum wage from $8 to $10. still some disagree. oakland a's owner lou wolf who owns the san jose earthquakes and fairmont hotel has come out against the measure. still students here think the change is necessary.

is it getting busier? >> we just found out about a new crash in contra costa county. highway 4. let me read it. at bailey road westbound. so it's a motorcycle crash in the right lane. we will try to find out more about that. let's two to the maps. we do have another motorcycle crash on the peninsula. northbound 280 near wood side road watch for the slow traffic there to perhaps build up because the fire department is on the way. i do want to mention that traffic into san francisco still looks pretty good. 101 and 280 and no major problems. and then we're looking at 80 between pinole and richmond. you will see a little slowing already coming down to that area. if you are driving to the san mateo bridge any time soon, remember it will close this weekend. but right now it is doing pretty well heading out to the high-rise and to the peninsula. and at the bay bridge toll plaza we do have a backup from the 880 overcrossing and the metering lights are on.

welcome back. good morning, to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we are follows for you right now. just hours ago shots were fired at san francisco police officers who were trying to pull a car over. no police officers were hurt. though suspects crashed into a taxicab as they tried to escape. one of the suspects was captured but the other one is still out on the loose. president obama and mitt romney are back campaigning again after appearing at a charity dinner last night. the president has campaign in virginia and mitt romney will be in florida. cal and stanford will fight for the ax tomorrow in the 115th big game. and this year is the anniversary of the play. the san mateo bridge will be shut down in just about 15 hours from now for a seismic upgrade. tara moriarty is in hayward

this morning with why it is happening this weekend in particular. tara. >> reporter: cal tran crews strategically picked this weekend in order to get the repair work done on the san mateo bridge. one of the major factors was the fact the 49ers weren't playing. those games obviously generating a lot of traffic. here is what happening. crews are installing a new seismic joint and replacing 50 feet. they did a do a temporary fix then but now it needs to be permanently repaired. there we want to do it after the dumbarton closure but before the rainy season hits. you want to be able to do this during the dry season. >> reporter: the new repairs are being paid for by toll funds. the bridge goes from foster city to haywards. the detours will start at 10:00

found 1,000 images of child pornography on a computer that was traced back to him. court records indicate carter has connections to a 21-year- old man arrested in new york on wednesday in an fbi sting operation. time is 6:47. alameda county is closer to having a new crime fighting tool. the sheriff wants to buy an unmanned surveillance drone for search and rescue missions, bomb throats, and more. some are worried about private invasion and safety. so far they have only tested those drones. if they get the grant money. the first could come next year. for the first time in a wicked a boat has been damaged. now their crew took the catamaran on the bay yesterday to test it out. they heard noises and brought it back to be insect spec--
