this follows a ktvu investigation. >> they are fighting to raise the minimum wage. why these students have an interest in the outcome. >> and a busy bay area bridge will be closed this weekend. how pro-sports plays into the closure plans. mornings on 2 starts right now. >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning. well um to mornings on 2. >> tori is off. it's friday october 19th. new this morning someone shot at police in san francisco. it all started with what appeared to be a routine traffic stop. we are live with the chain of events that led to the shooting. >> reporter: a man opened fire on san francisco police officers this morning after officers tried to pull over the car he was in. after the shooting that car

sped away. no officers hit by the way and the car sped away, made its way to this intersection, blew through this red light and slammed into a taxi cab. this was a white cadillac that police were after. it was going close to 50 miles an hour. the cab driver who was hit had minor injuries. after the crash the two inside that car then bailed out of the car and ran away. police moved in, they were able to arrest the passenger but this morning the driver is still on the loose. everything started around 2:00 when officers tried to make that traffic stop for a light that was out on the license plate of the car. seemingly minor infraction but didn't turn out to be a simple traffic stop. a sergeant we talked to said he feels lucky nobody was hurt. >> extremely thankful that nobody was seriously hurt. the only injury i know of is a hurt hand from the taxi cab driver.

this is pretty good given what could have happened. >> reporter: the car sheared off the top of a parking meter. that's what this officer is carrying over to a patrol car. it's not clear why the two in that car wouldn't pull over this morning and opened fire in the direction of police. police have the passenger in custody. he is being interviewed. they are searching for the driver. a sergeant that we talked to out here also wanted to make it clear police weren't actively pursuing the car at the time of the crash. live in in san francisco. >> oakland police investigating a deadly late night shooting. they were called to the area of 106th just after nine. they found a man on the sidewalk. the shooting happened in a residential neighborhood. so far no word on the victim's identity or a possible motive. >> a wildfire still burning in lake county. it's only 20% contained.

this started yesterday afternoon near highway 29. cal fires side the crews have been able to keep the fire from spreading. at least 300 acres have burned. there are still mandatoro evacuations in effect. dozens of people camped out on the campus of san jose state. they are hoping to send a strong message to voters. we have more on the message they are sending and how this could affect your family. >> reporter: we are seeing them just starting to wake up now. they have been camping for a cause. they are pushing to raise the minimum wage. it would change it to ten dollars an hour. it's an idea that started here at san jose state. students have been working on the measure for two years and said there are to many people making minimum wage who can't make ends meet and in city that

in the killing. they were arrested in the seattle area last week. a man has been described as a starter in a gang rape in richmond will be sentenced today. the 22-year-old is set to get a 32 year prison sentence. he and five others are charged with gang raping a 16-year-old girl outside a richmond high school homecoming dance in 2009. >> time is now 7:05. angry protesters disrupted last night's port of oakland board meeting. >> we are outraged. >> the media has exposed what we have known all long. >> angry union workers cited us and our investigation in their protest against the commission and the management. coming up at 7:46 the very latest on the fates of two top managers at board caught up in a spending scandal. >> it's time -- let's go out

back, misty, drizzlely conditions, areas in the 80s yesterday by the coast. we are going into a much cooler pattern. oakland airport, sfo and fresno, i threw that in there because their record went back to 1903. most locations 70s to the 90s. that's it for the record highs. if anything we have warm conditions because the fog is back and it's trapping that. that west wind is coming in. the final day of that warm weather, we transition into more fog, cooler weather and by sunday and monday increasing clouds, looks like rain for parts of next week. 50s and 60's. 64 oakland. 64 haywood, mountain various really mild for some. sfo66 last hour, the southeast wind. the westerly breeze taking hold and it'll continue to ramp up and some of the low clouds have made it well inland. actually from last night to today it's really picked up. a lot of low clouds, mist in

now another poll showed him up by two points but we just saw that a new poll is out today showing romney and the president in a dead heat. the president is holding a lead in some key swing states. romney and the president were back on the same stage for a charity dinner in new york city last night. they poked fun at each other and themselves. romney joked about his attacks on big bird and the national debt. >> in the spirit of seasame street the president's remark approximates brought to you by the letter o and the number 16 trillon. >> the unemployment is at its lowest level, i don't have a joke. i just thought it would be useful to remind everybody that the unemployment rate is it's lowest its been since i took office. >> reporter: and because everything seems to be about keeping score one person noted that romney made eight jokes about the president but the president made just three jokes

about romney. reporting live from washington dc. ktvu channel 2news. >> hillary clinton says that she will not run for president in 2016. in an interview she said that after 20 years of politics she is looking forward to having her own time back in being her own person. she previously said that even if the president is reelected she won't continue as secretary of state. >> we have new information this morning about the deadly attack on the consulate in libya. the cia station chief in libya sent a cable to washington with in 24 hours of last month's attack. it was carried out by militants, not by a mob upset about a movie. it's unclear if anyone outside the cia saw that cable. early reports about at tack connected it to protests across the world because of the movie.

nearly three years after the shooting that killed 13 people in fort hood many of those affected want the government to declare it a terrorist attack. they want that so that wounded soldiers and relatives of the people killed can get the same benefits as those in a combat zone like getting the purple heart. >> doctors in britain treating that 14-year-old pakistan girl who was shot by the taliban. today they say she is able to stand up with help and can write. doctors at the hospital in london say she is getting treatment that she is talking freely by writing. she is not speaking because she has a tube down her throat. in the meantime in pakistan security forces have detained the relatives of the man accused of the shooting. they hope to force him to give up by holding his relatives. back in this country the colorado movie theater where a gunman killed 12 people and injured dozens more is being

renovated. that makeover is a response to a survey sent to 6,000 people asking what should be done with that building. 70% said it should be he remodeled and reopened. >> tragic what happened but i mean if it's good to start over again and that's what they need to do. >> the renovations include replacing the chairs, redesigning the outside and more. the theater may possibly be back in business by early next year. >> a florida judge will hear new motions today in the george zimmerman case. his attorneys plan to argue for the right to suspect subpoena certainly media acts of the teen he is a accused of killing. the attorneys also want for more time to interview state witnesses. in just a few hours a nevada judge will hear arguments about if oj simpson

should be freed from prison or get a new trial. his lawyers said he was badly represented during the trial. he was convicted of armed robbery and kidnapping and is serving a nine to 33 year sentence. . >> next friday is the deadline for oakland to investigate problems with its e-mail system. that's all connected to the possible federal take over of the police department. the chief said he never got e- mails sent in the past week from a monitor. the messages involved concerns over his recommendation to discipline several dozen police officers for the way they handled the occupy protests. the oakland raiders hosting the jags on sunday. you may not be able to watch it on tv locally. the raiders face the possibility of a blackout. the team has been given today to -- a chance to sell more

. eight people are dead and 61 hurt after a massive roadside bomb in lebanon. you are looking at new video of the bombing that happened in the eastern part of beruit. it's not clear if it was targeting any political figure. in recent months they have seen a rise in clashes stemming from the civil war in syria. >> another death reported in the nationwide meningitis outbreak. now the death toll is 20. more than 250 people have become sick. the fda confirmed they found

richmond. drizzle over there in, marina nicole reported, low clouds around. very mild and you can see the low clouds back. warm temperatures yesterday. really didn't have the time to cooldown so a lot of that warm air is trapped. everything is changing rapidly. 90's yesterday, 80's for some, not today. 60's and 70s and watch the temperatures continue to fall over the next couple days, san francisco along the coast and bay will drop the most. most locations in 60's. 64 mountain view, haywood, oakland. only a few upper 50sa. there is that south wind. the low clouds are getting helped by a cold front. yes a cold front. 60's, 70's. the temperature trend will we from very warm to really cool. sure looks like rain. >> all right construction on

. cal trans getting ready to shut down the san mateo bridge for the weekend. they will do retrofit work. we are live to tell you why they are doing it this weekend. >> reporter: the crews specifically picked this weekend because they didn't want to conflict with games, mainly the 49ers since that generate associate s so much traffic. crews going to be moving and replacing the bridge decks on the part of the span between the elevated segments and the trestles. there is a cracked beam they need to replace. it was found during a routines in in october of 2010. they did temporary emergency repairs then and now have to do more permanent fix.

>> we will pull out 12 sections of the bridge deck, put in 12 new sections along with a new joint and we feel that will be pretty much the state-of-the-art piece of engineering. >> reporter: the new repairs will cost $3 million and are being paid for by the toll fund. the bridge goes from foster city to haywood and detours will begin at 10:00 this evening and they are scheduled to end monday morning at five. you are urged to take the dunbarton. live from haywood. ktvu. >> alameda is getting closer to a new new crime fighting tool, a drone but the plan is being criticized. some worry about privacy. they have only tested the

drone. they have applied for a federal grant. investigators believe an accelerant was used to start a fire at a home where a woman's body was found. authorities spent all day yesterday at the house on san carlos avenue. that fire broke out early. the house is owned by a retired san francisco firefighter who lived there with his girlfriend but he is reportedly out of town. >> time is 7:31 the man accused in the first homicide in pacifica in 12 years will face a judge. he was arrested in connection with the death of a 24-year-old keith coffee. the body was found in front of a home wednesday morning. starting on monday the jury will deliberate in the trial of a woman accused of killing her former friend michelle li.

prosecutors say she killed the 26-year-old after aggressively tracking her for at least a month. her lawyers said she acted in the heat of passion and should be found guilty of manslaughter, not murder. >> a san jose police officer has been arrested for felony grand theft. the police say he is a accused of tile sheet fraud. the 45-year-old was booked into the jail and is now on paid administrative leave. for the second time a boat competing to for the america's cup has been damaged. artemis racing, took out the boat for standard testing but apparently heard strange noises and brought the boat back in for inspection and that's when they found a problem with the front beam of the boat. they plan to christen the boat yesterday but that has now been pushed back.

a oracle team boat had heavy damage when it capsized. that's the 72-foot boat that you are looking at now and it'll beside lined until early next year. the wing sail was shattered in to several pieces and now has to be rebuilt. >> battle over turf at a soccer field now goes to court. its been a battle about installing turf and lights at golden gate park. the lawsuit claims the city overlooked the health risks of the chemicals used in turf. construction was scheduled to start in january but now that is on hold. local air quality management officials approved an action plan against future fires. they are calling for increased measuring of toxic air pollution following oil refinery and factory fires. plus a year long study of monitoring strategies and also finding ways to reduce the risk

of a toxic release. >> bay area rents going up in san jose and san francisco. real fact that tracks rent said its jumped 10.4% and that's the biggest increase in the country. the average went is now 198$0. san francisco rents average 185$8 a month. the bay area is less friendly to start up businesses than other parts of california. the council of economic institute said the inexpensive housing and the high cost of doing business here are part of the reasons. they say los angeles and san diego have more jobs than in the bay area. fremont and san jose were the best places in the country for technology start ups. >> apple has lost a legal battle against samsung in the united kingdom and now has been told to publicly apologize.

meteor that crashed on wednesday night. it's thought to have landed just outside of martinez. we flew over yesterday but didn't find anything. whoever finds part of it could strike it rich. expects say a big piece could be worth tens of thousands of dollars. the bay area may not get a lot of rain because the western united states is expected to have unusually warm and dry weather this winter season. noa said a dry winter will come behind one of the worst droughts in united states history. some people are facing a fork in the road. check it out. that is a six foot tall fork that popped up at an intersection in carlsbad. by wednesday the city decided to take it down. it was put up as a landmark for visitors by an artist. >> it was artistic, it was

reportedly had trouble paying the mortgage. the times also reporting uc san francisco medical center will be cutting jobs before the end of this year. the hospital said it needs to eliminate 300 full time jobs as it gets ready for health care reform. other local hospitals have announced similar measures. advanced mi doctor, ro devicing plans to cut about 1800 jobs. that's about 15% of their total work force. they said they need to cut spending as their sales decrease. that's because they are used in p c's and people are doing more work on tablets and smart phones. >> angry union workers packed in to a meeting at the port of oakland and as sam cook reports it started with a ktvu news investigation. >> reporter: the investigation found a lot of spending by the maritime director in the port of oakland.

more on the new area code that goes into effect tomorrow and how it'll impact you. >> reporter: good morning. you better get your dialing fingers ready to dial the extra digits. tomorrow is the day the changes take effect. we are getting what's called on overlay. two area codes, 408 and 669 will exist in the same place. because of our added cell phones prefibes were getting worn out so the adding of 669. if you are keeping the phone number you will experience a change too. the everybody will now have to dial 11 digits, one plus the area code plus the number. >> it gets complicated. you expect kids to remember their phone number and it gets worse. pretty soon you will have to dial 50 numbers in order to get where it is you want to call.

more details on his appearance later today. controversy for the boy scouts after many decades of alleged child abuse has been found including cases here in the bay area. almost two dozen former bay area volunteers were named in internal perversion files released yesterday by a judge. the documents cover 20 years 1965 to 1985. it included volunteers san jose, san francisco, oakland, concord and other bay area cities. piedmont wasn't on that list. the volunteers there say it's because of increased security measures. >> those mistakes were made in another time which doesn't excuse them. the organization has moved on with the times and i think has kept fairly current with what is appropriate now. >> the volunteers have to now go through background checks. the boy scouts of america

released a statement saying they are sorry for any failed protection or harm to children. main time sandusky is trying to overturn his child sex abuse conviction. lawyers have filed motions saying that there wasn't enough evidence to convict him and mistrial wasn't fair. a young man who allegations started the investigation has been appearing on morning tv shows telling his side of the story. >> the former manager of britney spears says she was addicted to drug. the lawyer said she was addicted and shaved her head in 2007 to keep the courts finding drug r esidue in her hair. he claims they had an agreement that he would get 15% of her earnings as her manager. chick -- check out this

video. the store clerk running for her life from a suspected gunman. we don't know if he was trying to rob the store or had another motive but she launches herself over that wall. she hid in a nearby restaurant. police are searching for the suspect. >> federal safety regulators investigating complaints about the jeep patriot. they say the engine reportedly can stall without warning, even at speeds of more than 60 miles an hour . the regulators say there has been at least one reported crash with two injuries associated that alleged problem. there is a lighting problem on many bay area freeways, it's a story you will only see here. if you drive after dark you may have noticed dark freeway signs, especially in the south bay.

cal trans said thieves out there stealing the copper wiring used to light the signs and selling to recycling centers, some say the signs so hard to read they have to slow down or squint. >> it's a safety issue i think. it could be dangerous and you -- you can't tell where you are going. makes it hard for drivers. >> the chp said they haven't noticed any increase in crashes. caltrans said the thieves stealing from all taxpayers of california. some of the lighting systems on the signs cost $100,000 to replace. >> the trade admission is offering 50,000 to anyone who is able to eliminate robocalls, it'll go to anyone who can find the best technical solution. there is a law already making them illegal unless the consumer has given written permission. >> if you plan to be big bird
