campbell. they will spend the next two weekends making repairs there and tara moriarty is live to explain why that repair work needed to happen and why now. >> reporter: yeah, cal trans crews say they wanted to schedule it before the rainy season hit and also wanted to make sure no conflicting 49er games as that generates so much traffic. here is what is going to happen this weekend. cal trans is going to install a new siesmic joint and replace 60 feet of the bridge deck east of the high rice high rise and a cracked deem beam was discovered so they did temporary repairs then and doing a more permanent fix and this was the only time to squeeze it in. >> we have the raiders game and there was a lot of activities to go on and we didn't want to have it two weeks ago. >> the new repairs will cost 3

million dollars paid for by those funds. those are the detours, we would suggest those detours to get where you need to go. tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >> what started out as a routine traffic stop until the people inside a car opened fire on san francisco police officers. alex savidge tells us about the pursuit that follows which ended with a crash and an injured bystander. >> reporter: a smashed up cadillac behind crime scene tape in the western edition neighborhood, police say the two men riding in this car were trying to getaway when they collided with a taxicab. the air bags went off but the cab driver escaped with a minor hand injury. everything started a few blocks away when police tried to pull the car over. but police say the driver refused to stop and that is when someone inside fired shots toward officers.

none of them were hit. the sergeant we talked to says they got lucky. >> i am thankful. just the fact na no one else was seriously hurt given all things that could have gone wrong i think this is pretty good. >> after shots were fired the car sped off, blowing a red light before it crashed, the two men inside ran off and one of them, the passenger was taken into custody. but the driver got away. officers initially tried to pull the car over for a broken light on the license plate, a seemingly minor infraction. >> you don't know what you are walking up on, this is a perfect case, an example, they could have stopped the car, walked up on the driver and then produced the gun and shot. >> police say it is unclear exactly yay the why they ran. this crash left debris scattered across the sidewalk. it may have been going 50 miles per hour, the force of the crash sheered off the top of the parking meter. we watched as an officer

carried the meter to a squad car, just some of the damage done this morning as two men went to great lengths to get away from officers. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. >> a retired schoolteacher stabbed to death in her home is being laid to rest today. a funeral service for susie was held this morning there. the mother of 4 was killed on october 5th, police say a prison escapee and his wife are suspects. they were arrested last week in seattle. a richmond man was sentenced this morning to 32 years in prison for his role in the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside a high school dance in 2009. prosecutors described manuel ortega as the the instigator. 5 others pace face trial. he could have faced live. they did not attend the

sentencing. a fire burned that there. it began there. firefighters have it 30% contained and say they have stopped it from spreading. there are mandatory evacuation orders in effect for the mercy springs area and no reports of any injuries. it is signature do or die game tonight for the san francisco giants as they play in another elimination game. >> up the middle, that is a base hit. >> the st. louis cardinals scored first in game 4 last night and the giants were able to get on the board with home runs by hunter pence and pablo sandoval but it wasn't enough as the cardinals won 8-3. they now lead 3-0. our coverage of game 5 begins at 4:00 with an early edition of ktvu news followed by a pregame show at 4:30 and first pitch at 5:07. the winner of the giants- cardinals series will face the

we are learning more today about the deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya, the associated press is reporting the cia station chief in libya sent a cable to washington within 24 hours of the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi, and said it was carried out by militants. it is unclear whether anyone outside the cia saw the cable. initial media reports connected to the protests across the muslim world because of that

anti-islam movie. in lebanon a top official was among people killed when the bomb went off there and injured others there. it is not clear if the violence is tied to the ongoing civil war that is happening in syria. british doctors treating the 14 year old pakistani girl shot by the taliban says she is able to stand with help and to write. doctors say she is communicating freely in writing. she is not speaking yet because she still has a tube in her throat. meantime in pakistan security forces have detained relatives of the man accused in the shooting and hope to force the man to surrenderer by keeping them in custody. president barack obama and mitt romney are keeping their schedule light today as they prepare for monday's debate. the president is campaigning in virginia, attacking romney's job plan and changing

have to take extra steps to make local calls. ann reuben is live to tell us how they are preparing for it. >> reporter: there has been an ad campaign warning people for weeks the way you dial in the 408 area code is about to change, now in order to make a local call you will dial as if you were dialing long distance. starting tomorrow in the south bay get ready to dial some extra digits. >> i didn't know it was coming up so soon but -- >> that's right if you live in the 408 area code you will need to dial all digits to make even a local call. the reason, the introduction of a new carry code, 669. it will actually be what is called an overlaw district where the old 408 numbers and new sick 69 ones will exist in the same space, not every 1 is happy about the changes. >> pretty soon you will have to dial 50 numbers in order to get wherever it is you are trying to call and it just doesn't make sense. there has got to be a better

error message. ann reuben, ktvu channel 2 news. >> the resorted could be auctioned off next month. the san francisco business times reports the hotel is tangled in a bankruptcy proceeding. the current owner bought the clermont and 4 others two years ago but has not been able to stay current on the mortgage. the times reports uc san francisco medical center plans to cut hundreds of jobs before the end of the year. the hospital says it needs to eliminate the equivalent of 300 full time jobs as it prepares for healthcare reform. other local hospitals have announced similar cost cutting measures. the september jobs report was released today. it shows a slight drop in california's jobless rate. according to the u.s. labor department the state's unemployment rate fell to 10.2% last month. that is down 4/10s of a percent from august, but just 8500 new jobs were created. california had the third highest unemployment rate in the nation last month behind nevada and rhode island. the national unemployment rate in september was 7.8%.

it is the lowest level in 3.5 years. mixed news today for the housing market. according to the national association of reel tores, after hitting a two year high in august sales fell in september. it was due in part because fewer homes were available. sales dipped 1.7% to an adjustedded rate of 4.75 million however they are still up 11% from a year earlier. a new twist to the home crisis, a homeowner foreclosed on her bank. she was having trouble paying the mortgage and was facing foreclosure but her lawyers filed suit and the court ordered bank of america to pay mark 10,000 dollars, that was six months ago and the bang still had not paid up so mark and her lawyers called in the sheriff and a moving van, the deputies told the bank to cut a check and have all the furniture seized. >> and i am psyched to get a result and i think today is to get my result.

let's show you a live look at the big board at the new york stock exchange. it was a strong week for the market but may be ending on a sour note. the dow jones is down 200 points. the nasdaq down more than 70 points. the drop follows poor earnings reports for three major companies in the dow jones, profits at microsoft and mcdonalds fell, general electric reported higher profits but revenue was not as high as expected. some analysts say that may be due to a drop in orders for wind turbines. apple has loss at legal battle against samsung and the company has been ordered by a judge to apologize. the uk court says samsung did not copy apple's design for tablets. the british court said in part the galaxy tablet doesn't infringe on the patent because the the samsung patents were not as cool.

that may end it there but may may appeal. they are starting that there. locals will get their first taste of starbuck's there. they will open stores in new deli next here and they have locations in 61 countries. a new study shows the bay area is less friendly to start up businesses than other parts of california, the bay area council economic institute says relatively expensive housing and the high cost of doing business here are part of the reasons. the report adds los angeles and san diego are home to started ups that have created more jobs there than here. earlier this month size up.com reported fremont and san jose were the best places in the country for technology start ups. facebook is taking a page from apple's playbook, the social network issued a vague invitation to the med ofor media for an event there, that is the only clue. they started a service that

lets them give tangible rather than virtual gifts then. some people in california are facing a fork in the road. this 6 foot tall fork popped up earlier there. by wednesday the city decided to take it down. it was put up by an artist as a landmark for visitors. now some are calling for it to be brought back. >> it was artistic, whimsical and told the story there was a fork in the road. watch out. put it back. >> they appreciate the creativity but say it is neither safe nor legal to put giants objects on public streets or medians. the company that makes sunscreen is recalling one of its products, they say they have received 5 reports of people catching fire after they were exposed to an open flame while wearing its ultra mist sunscreen. company officials say it appears a valve malfunction applies too much and that can catch fire will still wet.

urn under the new on-line tool to help victims of bike theft see if it is sold on line. users can plug in a description of their bike and where they were stolen and the search engine will show results of the bikes that fit the description on line. they hope to reduce bike theft by making it more difficult to sell them. they are expected to approve a law to give the public more information about bedbug infestations. if it passes pest control companies would have to provide monthly reports on where bedbugs are found. it would also require landlords to give tenants a two year record of bedbug reports. bedbug bites can cause redness, itching and swelling. ktvu is bringing you game 5 of the nlcs giants versus the cardinals, so tune in early for an early edition of news and we
