average. he is one of the leading candidates for the national league mvp. we are bringing you game five of the nlcs live beginning with the pregame show right after this newscast at 4:30. >> now to the continuing coverage of the disappearance of sierra lamar. today is a sad day for the family as they mark her 16th birthday. robbered honda is in fremont with how the family and friends are handling this emotional day. >> reporter: it is homecoming week at her old school. washington high and as you heard it's her birthday. combination of events make it a natural day to talk about the teen but with very mixed emotions. cheerleaders and students, the common scene at washington high school but this group is wearing more than school colors n he very t-shirts celebrating sierra's 16th birthday today. the teen grew up here before her family moved to morgan hill

last year. she disappeared march 16th. a man was arrested and charged with her murder though no body has been found. >> she -- her 16th birthday and it's not fair that somebody took that away. i wanted to be like she is still here. >> homecoming week brings a lot of memories up about her because we cheered freshman year. she was really into it. >> reporter: people in the search efforts have started an online social media campaign to acknowledge her birthday and generate more information about her case and other missing person cases. >> we should all just put pictures up of her for her birthday or any day we can and any missing children, you know, every missing child deserves a voice. we can all be that voice. >> reporter: her father said all the birthday attention generates conflicting feelings. >> makes us happy and sad. it's kind of mixed emotions. we are really happy that people

are doing that. >> reporter: the washington high school homecoming game is tomorrow night but during the day many of her friends will be in morgan hill for the weekly ongoing volunteer search effort. live in fremont. robert honda. >> a retired schoolteacher stabbed to death in her home was laid to rest today. family and friends gathered this morning for a funeral service for her at saint patrick's church. the mother of four was killed on october 5th. police say a jail escapee named darnell washington and his wife are suspects. they were arrested in seal last week. the first of six defendants was sentenced for his role in the gang rape of a girl outside of richmond high school. the 22-year-old showed no emotion as he appeared in court for a sentencing today. he pleaded guilty to four counts including sexual assault in exchange he got a 32 year term instead of life. prosecutors say in october of 2009 a group of men who had

been drinking attacked a girl violently. witnesses saw him punch, kick and assault her. today both sides say his plea deal spares the victim the trauma of testifying. >> we weighed the need to -- for justice with the needs to the victim. >> we felt the best thing was to take responsibility for his participation. >> the remaining five defendants are due in court one week from today. >> in less than six hours the san mateo bridge will be approximate shut down to traffic all weekend long for much needed repairs. allie is live now to tell us what people heading west will start to see in the next couple hours. >> reporter: the bridge won't be closed until 10:00 but a couple of hours now drivers heading westbound on san mateo may start to notice a back up. that's because at 6:00 caltrans will close off the far right lane so that they can move in

some equip helicopter ment for the project. it's the longest in the bay area. the wide divide means many have no reason to crossover to the other side on weekends but not ken. >> my girlfriend lives there. go back and forth. >> reporter: she lives in south san francisco. the closure is prompting them to make other plans. >> hopefully leaving town. i don't want to be he here this weekend. >> i'm not going to go over or make another way, dunbarton dunbarton. >> reporter: two years ago workers found a bridge. >> the far right lane, where the trestles. >> reporter: the work this weekend and next will provide a permanent fix to the problem. caltrans spokesman said the construction work will be impressive to see. >> a crane that can lift 600-

tons. that's a big crane. it'll pick up the old sections of the bridge deck, swing them out and then pick up the new sections and drop them in. >> reporter: along with that construction work they are taking advantage of the closure this weekend and next weekend to do some other maintenance work on the bridge. they are going to be repainting some of the barriers and they are going to do landscaping work. live in haywood. ktvu channel 2news. >> police in san francisco are looking for a suspect who opened fire on officers early this morning. they say the violence started after two men inside a cadillac wouldn't pull over for a traffic stop. police say the suspects fired. the officers were not hurt. the sergeant we talked to said they got lucky. >> you don't know what you are walking up on. this is a perfect case. they could have stopped the car, walked up on the driver and they could have shot. >> the car eventually crashed

into a taxi cab. a man was arrest, another is still at large. >> construction making a come back. ground breaking for new homes taking place at its fastest rate since 2008. with all that comes the potential for trouble. matt keller is here now with now investigators caught up with several unlicensed contractors here in the bay area. >> reporter: we got a look behind the scenes at the life of an unlicensed contractor today. the trouble it can cause for people trying to get work done. >> you are looking at -- $700. >> reporter: that man was one of 100 people including 14 in union city caught up in a sting by the contractor's state license board. >> you have -- you have a -- any identification on you? >> reporter: investigators say the 92 people arrested may face one or more charges for contracting without a license, illegal advertising, and requesting an exsessionsive

down payment. the state license board said they put homeowners at risk if a worker is hurt on their property and are unfair competition to real licensed contractors. >> also if you fire someone without a license you don't know the job they will do. you don't know the experience and there is little you can do if you have a problem with them. >> you know scam wasn't going through my head. charming and -- maybe i can get the house painted, you know. >> reporter: diane is a retired teacher living in oakland and paid $4,400 to paint her house. instead of a nice new look she was ripped off. shoddy work, the job half done and the feeling she should have known better. >> soup, i mean stupid. >> reporter: the contractor state license board said the man is good at getting people like her to trust him but bad at doing the job. he has several warrants out. >> check them out first.

google them. >> reporter: the contractor state license board recommends people look for the state license number and check it to make sure it's in good standing don't pay more than 10% as a down payment. >> energy officials on hand to celebrate the building of a new solar energy fa civil dozen as tended that ground breaking of the new joint center. they will use the lab to find alternative fuels from sunlight. >> future solar panel would actually make transportation fuel. it would make gasoline directly instead of making electricity. that's the goal. >> the 54 million-dollar project is expected to be done in late 2014. >> crews fighting a wildfire in lake county say they expect to have it contained by tomorrow morning. the 300-acre fire is burning near lower lake near highway 29. it broke out yesterday afternoon and destroyed three

buildings. firefighters say they now have the fire 30% contained. an evacuation ordero was lifted for the twin lakes subdivision. two east bay firefighters were remembered today at the california firefighter's memorial. hundreds of firefighters gathered at state capitol for a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary. among those were william west and hollis franksful both died from june from cancer. they are among 38 who passed this year either from injuries they got in the line of duty or from job related causes. >> amazing find, a new species found here in the bay area. and what does it have to do with buster posey? >> a major drop off in temperatures for today. coming up how much cooling you

called sponge heaven has them excited about what else is down there. reporting live. john fowler. >> it was a dark day on wall street as the stock market saw it's worst losses in four months. the dow fell more than 205 points closing at 13, 343. the nasdaq lost 67 closing at 3, 05 and the s&p500 fell to close at 1433. today's market dropped paled in comparison to 25 years ago on this date. october 19th, 1987 was blackmon. the dow fell more than 58points, more than 22% of the market's value. the crash came after a selloff triggered by an increase in interest rates. >> california's unemployment picture brightened today.

last month the jobless rate dropped from 10.6% to 10.2%. tom live in newark where former employees of the bankrupt solyndra found new hope at a job fair. >> reporter: their collapse not only shocked the nation, most approximate most of the workers still trying to recover. today's job fair drew hundreds of job seekers, former workers received special seminars because its been hard for them to get a good job. >> i can say about 250 of the 1500 people have i know are employed with benefits. >> reporter: former employee allen harper went back to school. >> trying to get in to the medical device school. fda regulated so it can't be farmed out. . >> reporter: another has been looking for over a year.

ten to 20 degrees. here you can see on the live storm tracker the current fog pattern. the clouds hugging the coast and a few patches in to the bay. a big game coming up right now. it's 53, you can see not much in the way of radar coverage but there is a chance of a few sprinkles. here is the forecast with more cloud cover. temperature around 50 degrees by first pitch as you can see for game five. 80's and 90s. 92 -- back to many the mid70's. san francisco cooling off 20 degrees and livermore back down in to the upper 07's. that's what we have right now 79, san jose 69, santa rosa in the lower 70s at 72. overnight will be pretty chilly once again. it's that time of year. upper 40s to the low to mid50s.

san francisco 53, antioch in the mid50s. the short term, the low clouds and fog regroup, first thing tomorrow morning, with that we will have partly to mostly cloudy skies, skies getting partly cloudy or maybe more sun in to the afternoon. that yellow contourmalining up with the 70's. cooling will continue into the weekend. sunday with a coolest day. you can see all the activity up to the north and we have a series of storm that will approach the area by sunday night and monday. we will bump up the rainfall chances, here is the forecast model. not a lot for tomorrow into saturday. into sunday we will thicken up the cloud cover. there is the chance of a few evening sprinkles sunday night but look what happens, just in time for the monday morning drive. 7:00, hold on to the rain chances for the rest of the damon and could track more shower chances later next week. big change for the weather pattern. we have been cooling off and the cooling will continue in to the weekend. warmest locations mid to upper 07's.

. more games of the nhl season were canceled today. that a day after it turned down three counter proposals from players. it wipes out the third week of the season but a full game schedule can still be played if a deal is reached with the union by next thursday but at this point no new talks have been scheduled. >> the giants are facing a do or die situation in st. louis

today. down three games to one to the cardinals. the giants were in great spirits today. barry zito will be on the mound tonight to try to get them back on track. they will need another great outing from him to avert being eliminated. you saw the cardinals win last night 8-3. in the clubhouse following that game the team has a lot of faith in zito. >> starts, he just found a day -- we have been winning behind him. look forward to, to his start tomorrow. you know we have all the confidence. we know what this team -- what we are capable of. >> back in that mode where you say i want to play one more game with you and this locker. >> for sure. for sure. we are talking aboutt. angel and hunter. i think we will be in -- a really positive, all the way and still positive right now.

the next 28 minutes. a few loyal fans who wanted to get the early start, they are here. you can see that guy. he is cheering, he is excited to go. we are expecting a packed house. the last couple of times i have been here, for the games, its been standing room only. in fact the last game, that the giants had here, they had to actually stop people from coming in the door because there was just so many people in here that they couldn't have another body. of course the giants need to win the next three games in order to go back to the world series but right now giants fans say they are focusing on just this game tonight. we need to get through this game in order for the giants to come back to at&t park. so that the fans can see them here, again walnut creek. it's expected to be packed tonight. i want to show you something over here on the wall. this restaurant if you have never been here, its cool. its modeled after at and t park and you can see up above that
