nearby hospitals died. it took 30 minutes for crews to open up with just a couple lays and all lanes hope now. >> right now crews tearing apart the deck of the san mateo bridge. you can see one of the vehicles just making its way along that deck span. caltrans shut all of that down late last night because 12, 30- foot sections will be replaced for r. >>announcer: retrofitting. >> it's inconvenient but i don't mind they are spending time and money making sure that the bridge is safe. >> its going to be a pain in the rear. >> that man is a limo driver said he crosses the bridge several times a day so this weekend will be tough on him. there is the bay bridge, if you have to head into the city you can see things moving just

starbucks worker who went missing on year way to work. jonathan holt lived in the same complex as the 21-year-old. they knew each other. the body was found last night in a wooded area ending a four day search. >> when contacted he voluntarily came to the police department for an interview. during this interview with holt detectives determined he was a friend of the couple and lived in the same apartment complex. about the same time. >> dna evidence helped identity him as the suspect in that case. >> drivers in michigan are on alert after a string of more than a dozen shootings along interstate 96. all of them happened in the past week and in many cases the driver saw the gunman coming at them from the opposite direction of traffic. authorities say the shootings appear to be random and nobody has been hit by the gun fire. a nevada judge is reopening the armed robbery and kidnapping against against oj

the issue of doing it was discussed yesterday at the final day of a week long pretrial hearing. the five defendants include alleged mastermind. the defense secretary has the authority to authorize the broadcast of the trial. >> it apparently pays to be a doctor, especially if you your office is a prison. a state review has found california prison doctors the second highest paid in the nation. according to that review it's because california has an official appointed by a judge called a receiver whose job is to improve inmate care. the receiver has been paying doctors, den fists and nurses around twice the statewide average for working overtime, overnight and on holidays. economists say there is reason for optimism and concern in the latest jobless numbers, the largest drop in the state unemployment rate in 36 years. it fell to 10.2% in december.

. a search underway for the driver of a car who hit an apartment building in oakland. it happened on mcarthur boulevard. witnesses say the driver may have been street racing just before that accident. the suv hit a pedestrian who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver abandoned the car, jumped in to another car and fled the scene. arizona town is hosting it's own version of spain's running of the bulls this weekend. that event in cave creek arizona is just getting started. all participants have to sign a four page waiver to get inside a fenced area in front of 12 raging bulls. the bulls can run 35 miles an hour and faster. >> you need to run really fast when you get -- when your legs get tired keep running.

caught on fire. nobody was hurt but the flamed moved through the 52-foot structure only leave age metal skeleton. the fire was likely caused by a mechanical failure but it's under investigation. and then later in the day a ride at the state fair malfunctioned. 24 people were stranded, 200 feet in the air. it took more than 2 hours to lower everybody safely to the ground. passengers say they were a bit shaken up but nobody was hurt. >> body found in oregon may be those of two missing men there the bay area. they were found at an abandoned ranch. they have not been identified yet but they could be two men who headed to oregon to buy a horse or hay. the truck they drove was found burned. >> police in colorado hope a key piece of evidence will help them find the killer of a 10-

year-old jessica ridgeway. a wooden cross found during the investigation could belong to ridgeway's killer. they are asking for the public's help. >> looking at it again it's unique and we feel or believe it may have been dropped or left behind by the killer. >> police say they believe that the same person may also be responsible for an attempted kidnapping at a colorado lake. they hope the description of the individual from that case will help lead to a break. george zimmerman's team is celebrating a victory in the shooting trial. yesterday a judge granded access to the teen's school records and social media posts. the lawyers said there are videos suggesting martin was involved in mma fighting. he said that shows he had violent tendencies. they want to prove zimmerman was acts in self-defense when

he shot the 17-year-old. >> one person is dead and six injured after a tour bus crash in arizona. the crash happened just before eight about 20 miles from the nevada state line. the driver was killed in the crash. police believe he had a type of medical emergency and lost control of the bus. the six most seriously injured were taken to the hospital. san francisco police arrested a bus passenger who is a accused of stabbing another man in the neck with scissors. it happened yesterday afternoon. officials say a passenger was harassing the bus driver, another rider attempted to interve and was stabbed. the victim was treated at the scene. the suspect was arrested. >> first of six defendants in the richmond high school gang rape case is on his way to prison for 32 years. he was sentenced in court yesterday. he could have received a life sentence at trial but got a

reduced sentence after agreeing to plead guilty to five charges. >> he wishes he could undo that night. he never wanted what happened to happen. it did and he can't change what happened. so, he felt that the best thing he could do was to take responsibility for his participation and spare his family and spare the victim and her family the stress of a trial. >> prosecutors say he was the instigator in the gang rape of the 16-year-old girl in 2009. five others still face trial for the attack. mourners in the east bay gathered to remember a retired schoolteacher murdered in her home two weeks ago. they held a funeral service yesterday at saint patrick's church. she was described as full of love, life and happiness. a prison escapee and his wife stabbed her to death and stole her car. they were arrested in

of southbound 101. it happened just before blossom hill road. a honda hit the back of a white jeep sending down a ditch. one person died at the scene two of at least four taken to the hospital have also died. it took 30 minutes for crews to open up a couple lanes, all lanes open now. >> a suspicious fire destroyed a historicly significant structure in livermore over night. the small building next to the eagles lodge on north livermore avenue used to be a church. firefighters soaked it around 11:00. the former church was said to be about 100 years old. a woman heard about the fire and went to see what happened. >> reporter: i walked up and the flames were coming out the front of the window, there was smoke. i lived here my whole life. >> it was abandoned but firefighters said they think someone was inside, possibly a

from workers on the progress. >> reporter: the bridge shut down to traffic at ten last night and you can see this is the toll plaza on the haywood side. it's empty. the only vehicles are the caltrans vehicles and the equipment that they brought out to do this project. they are shut down the bridge this weekend and next so they can replace part of it. as you said, they are replacing some of the 12 -- some 12 sections of the bridge and here is -- here is talk more about it is steven williams. they started this at ten last night. tell us what progress they made. >> we have made a lot of progress. we were able to take out six of the 12 sections of deck structure that are going to be replaced. so right now we are right on schedule which is a -- a good thing. >> and -- happening about three and a half miles us. this all started with some cracks or a crack that was

found under the bridge. >> yeah. found in the deck structure of the bridge. and so, we -- we did a repair on it, repair, held up very well. since that time. it was decided that with the -- with the better technology and the variety of safety enhancements available that us that we should use that opportunity to do what we are doing. we will replace 12 sections, each section is 14 feet by 30 feet. they weigh about 45-tons. we have a crane that has a 600- ton capacity and hopefully we will have that thing finished by drive time on monday morning. >> reporter: five is the scheduled reopening time. thank you. now coming up later on this morning caltrans is supposed to escort us closer so you see the crane doing it's work.

2010. police have arrested two brothers. they say they broke into a cash room and robbed the employees a catering company. one of them is said to have been a former employee with that company. >> it was a rough start to the texas state fair after crew has to respond to two big emergencies there yesterday. 24 people were stranded, two hundred feet in the air after a ride lost power. it took crews more than two hours to lower everybody safely to the ground. passengers say they were shaken but nobody was hurt. earlier in the day the mascot of the fair caught on fire. nobody was hurt but the flames moved right through the 52-foot structure. only leaving a metal skeleton behind. authorities say the fire was likely caused by a mechanical failure but it's still under investigation. at least 52 people could loose their jobs after an

. breaking news out of the los angeles area, police say someone attacked a family of five in the city of inglewood. a father and his 4-year-old son have been shot and killed. the mother and two other children were hurt. the churn are in critical -- the children are in critical

condition. that home was also set on fire. five neighbors homes have been evacuated. we are following the story. >> firefighters are gaining ground against a wildfire in lake county. firefighters say that 29 fire near lower lake is now 90% contained. 300 acres have burned. all evacuation orders have now been lifted. the driver of a tour bus is dead after a crash in arizona that left six others injured. it happened just before eight about 20 miles over the nevada state line. it appears the driver suffered some type of medical emergency and then lost control of the bus. the people most seriously hurt were airlifted to university medical center in las vegas. search is underway for a driver of an suv that hit an apartment building in oakland. happened over an mcarthur. witnesses say the driver may have been street racing before that accident. the suv also clipped a

pedestrian who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver abandoned the suv, jumped in to another car and fled. >> police in colorado hope a key piece of evidence will help them find the killer of 10-year- old jessica ridgeway. a wooden cross could belong to the killer. they want the public's help to identity the person known to carry or wear that type of cross. >> it's unique. we feel or believe that it may have been dropped or left behind by the killer. >> list say that they believe the same person may be responsible for an attempted kidnapping at a colorado lake. they are hoping that the description from that case will help lead to a case in this case. george zimmerman's team is celebrating a key victory. yesterday a judge granted

access to the teen's facebook posts and his school records. defense wants to prove zimmerman was acting in self- defense. >> body found in oregon may be those of two missing men from the bay area. they were found in an abandoned ranch. they have not been officially identified yet but police say that they could be the two missing men. they headed to oakland early their month. they said they were going to buy a horse or hay. the truck they drove was found burned six miles authority body was found . >> two cities at the top of the list for the country's most dangerous cities. oakland was third overall and stockton was 8th. the study shows when it comes

route, because the san mateo bridge is closed. allie rasmus is at the bridge right now with how you can get around it. >> reporter: there's some people doing -- replacing the crash barriers. they're also rewiring some of the electrical wiring. they're taking advantage of this weekend-long closure to do a bunch of different projects here. the main project and the reason why this bridge is closed is because of work happening three and a half miles away from us. caltrans is completely replacing entire sections of the bridge, and they made a lot of progress doing that overnight. >> between 1 a.m. and right now, they were able to remove half of the total structures that have to be replaced, 12 altogether. >> reporter: now, this project all began with the discovery of a crack underneath the bridge two years ago. this weekend's work will provide a permanent fix to that problem, and caltrans is also using this opportunity to

install some seismic joints to make the bridge more earthquake- safe. not only are they replacing it; they're going to be reinforcing it as well. at about 9:05, caltrans is going to escort us closer to the construction site. we'll bring you that video at 9:45. three people were killed in an overnight crash that blocked all lanes of southbound 101, near blossom hill road in san jose, just before 1 locke this morning. a honda slammed into the back of a jeep, sending it down an embankment. one person died at the scene, two others at the hospital. a deadly drive-by shooting on arkansas street near sonoma boulevard. police say when they arrived, they found two men who had been shot. 20-year-old maurice dominguez

died of his injuries. we are also following developing news, a disturbing story in los angeles where a father and his four-year-old son have been killed, after a gunman attacked that family inside their own home. police say the gunman fired shots at them, then set their home on fire. the suspect was last seen wearing a painter's mask. we are continuing to follow this story and will bring you the latest as we get it. a suspicious fire destroyed a historic structure in livermore. it used to be a church. firefighters soaked the charred building with water around 11:00 last night. the former church was said to be about 100 years old. we spoke to a woman who heard about the fire and rushed over to see what happened. >> so i walked up and the flames were coming out the front of the window.

there was smoke everywhere. i've lived her my whole life and i recognized the building. i've seen it for the last 25 years. >> the building was abandoned but firefighters told ktvu they think someone was inside, possibly a homeless person who started the fire to keep warm. they think the fire accidentally spread, but the exact cause is still under investigation. new this morning, firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire in antioch. it happened at around 1:45 this morning. it appears that the fire started in the garage and then spread through the house. the lack of accessible hydrants made it difficult to fight that fire. >> we're in an area that is understaffed with water, so we had a challenge with water. we did have two water tanks arrive on scene to provide water. >> damage is estimated at 50,000. san francisco giants are making some noise in the nlcs, and the black and orange are

back home, getting ready for game 6. the team buses moved into at&t park around 3:00 this morning. the players returned along with other team personnel. reporters were kept away from the players, but there's a shot of pitcher barry zito, seen wearing the sweater and fedora. the giants look to tie up the national league championship series tomorrow and force a game 7. >> barry zito just may have pitched his best game as a giant under pressure. he struck out six batters. the giants shut out the cardinals 6-0. the giants scored four runs thanks to that right there. game 6 can be seen right here on ktvu channel 2. coverage begins at 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, first pitch at 4:45. in about an hour, making a phone call in south bay may be a bit more confusing. callers with a 408 number will

election issue, foreign policy attracted new attention after last month's terrorist attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. an investigation is underway after someone circulated flyers offering free medical marijuana to anyone who voted in a recent southern california council election. no one is claiming responsibility for those flyers in pasadena. >> it's quite a mystery who sent it out. it's weird. >> officials say they don't believe the flyers had anything to do with the record voter turnout. one candidate has filed a complaint challenging the election results. a complaint has been filed against an arizona nonprofit organization for an $11 million campaign contribution, right here in california. the group, americans for responsible leadership, gave the money to a small business

political action committee. it opposes proposition 30. that's governor brown's proposal to increase the general sales tax and the state income tax on higher earners. a consumer watch dog group filed the complaint, claiming the arizona group violated state campaign laws by failing to disclose where the money came from. governor jerry brown will stop in san francisco this morning to campaign for his tax initiatives. he will discuss the importance of proposition 30. he says voters must pass the initiative or face billions in cuts to schools. a teachers association is going door to door and calling voters to support the measure. the taliban is claiming responsibility for a grenade attack that destroyed a warehouse in afghanistan. the warehouse contained foods and supplies for a u.s. base in afghanistan. no one was hurt in that attack. oregon lawmakers have released documents that show

that u.s. ambassador stevens pleaded for more security. he was killed with three other americans. the three-page message was labeled sensitive. in it, stevens discussed growing security problems in benghazi. >> there's two aspects of this that we need to look at. one is the events leading up to the attack and the intelligence failures there and then what clearly is either a cover-up or is gross incompetence. >> in june, stevens signed another document. today marks the anniversary of the capture and death of former libyan dictator gadhafi. just a short time ago, libya announced that it caught gadhafi's former spokesman. he's being taken to tripoli for questioning. rebel forces finally toppled gadhafi from power last year.

after being captured from his hometown, he was shot dead just an hour later. the israeli lawyer representing his daughter says all those responsible for gadhafi's death must be prosecuted. >> i have no doubt in my mind that he was murdered, murdered in the most brutal and horrible fashion. it's a matter of justice. the rule of law. >> libyans are not expected to hold any large public displays today, but they do plan special ceremonies next tuesday, the day to mark gadhafi's death and the end of the libyan civil war. if you didn't see the meteors on wednesday night, you'll have another chance. nasa says the orionid meteor shower will be most visible this weekend. this meteor shower is a result of dust from halley's comet's

half a million bottles of banana boat spray-on sunscreen are being recalled amid reports of people catching fire. the recall includes 23 varieties of banana boat's ultramist sunscreen, due to the risk of the lotion igniting near a flame. the company says there have been five reports of people suffering burns after using the sunscreen. they say a spray valve appears

to be the source of the problem. economists say there's reason for optimism. california's latest job numbers, the largest drop. it fell to 10.2% in september. and it's the largest month of a drop since california started tracking the rate 36 years ago. the employment development department warns these numbers are preliminary. these numbers may also be due to fewer people applying for jobs. unemployment rates also fell shortly in nine bay area counties. marin counties to have the lowest number in the region. no bay area county is in double digit. solano typically has the highest unemployment rate in the area. it was at 9.3% last month. and it pays to be a doctor, especially if your office is a prison. california prison doctors are the second-highest paid in the nationment according to the review, it's because california has an official appointed by a

judge called a receiver, whose job is to improve care. well, people could lose their jobs after an investigation at new york's liberty national airport found they were stealing from passengers. eight of the people involved stealing were fired, 19 were suspended and another 25 could also be losing their jobs. one of those employees said they stole because of low morale and low pay. nearly 100 people have been arrested statewide in a construction sting targeting unlicensed contractors. they set up stings to catch workers working without a license, advertising illegally or requesting extra large down

payments. we talked to an oakland woman who said she was duped by a man who did shoddy work on her house. he is a contractor with several warrants out for his arrest. >> stupid. i mean, stupid. hello. check them out first. google 'em. >> the contractors board recommends you check references, get at least three bids and make sure you have a written contract before you have any work done on your home. there is help this morning for bay area homeowners facing foreclosure. a foreclosure prevention event just got underway. you will be set up with a counselor who knows the system. the event on cunningham avenue will go until 3:00 this afternoon. there's a lot of bickering over california's high-speed

connection to a deadly gang beating. four of the suspects are adults. the other three suspects are juveniles and their ages have not been released. investigators say a group of people attacked 14-year-old herberto reyes, who died from his injuries three days later. there's another shakeup at the management level at the port of oakland, stemming from a news a investigation. the port has ordered maritime director james kwon to return from an afterseas trip to place him on administrative leave immediately. we first reported that the port reimbursed kwon for a 4,000 tab at a strip club. on thursday, the port placed the executive director, omar benjamin, on administrative

leave. port officials have now announced that deputy director gene will take over as director. meantime, christie mckenny will assume the job of director of aviation. the california fair political practices commission says the $100,000 contribution from the mayor's political action committee was illegal and should be returned. mayor reed issued a response to that claim, which read in sport, the statute cited in the letter applies to candidate control committees and i am not a candidate. we are fully cooperating and hope to come to a resolution on this matter quickly. firefighters are gaining ground against a wildfire burning in lake county. firefighters say the 29 fire near lower lake is now 90% contained. 300 acres have burned in more than 360 firefighters battled

good morning to you. a live look there at the low cloud deck hanging over san rafael this morning. here's a recap of the some of the top stories we're following for you. two people are dead after an overnight accident that temporarily blocked all lanes of southbound 101. the chp says a honda slammed into the back of a jeep. three people died. firefighters are trying to figure out what started a fire at a historical building in livermore. fire crews say an abandoned building was heavily damaged and firefighters are calling the fire suspicious. in about 15 minutes, making a phone call to south bay is

about to change. callers will now have to dial a one plus an area code, all in preparation for the roll-out of the new area code next month. happening right now, if you are getting ready to head to the peninsula or the east bay, many of you might have to find an alternate route. that's because the san mateo bridge is closed. allie rasmus is live with us now at the bridge with more on the work that's being done so far. and how are we looking? >> reporter: so far, so good, according to caltrans. we're right in the middle of the san mateo bridge, about three and a half miles in, just before the incline that you see there. that's where all this work is going on. that giant crane you're looking at is in the process of hoisting out twelve 30-foot sections of the bridge. you can see where they're doing that work. this is what they're replacing it with. you can see huge cement sections of the bridge.

these are the new sections that are going to replace the old sections that are being pulled out right now. there is another new section of the bridge already strapped into a harness. we've got some video of that to show you. that was just about 20 minutes ago when caltrans installed the first new section of the bridge. caltrans has shut down the san mateo bridge to traffic for the entire weekend. they started at 10:00 last night. they started their work immediately afterwards and overnight, crews made a lot of progress. >> between 1 a.m. and right now, they were able to remove half of the total structures that have to be replaced. 12 altogether. >> reporter: so now that they've removed some of the older sections of the bridge, they're in the process of replacing it with the new sections. while they're doing that work, they're also going to be doing some seismic retrofit as well to make the bridge more

earthquake-proof as well. it all began with the discovery of a crack two years ago. the work here is to provide a permanent fix to that problem. caltrans says their right on schedule with the work they need to do. the spokesman says there's a slight possibility that they may not have to close the san mateo bridge again next weekend. that's what they're shooting for, but at the same time, they say they don't want to rush things, because it is a safety project, so they're taking their time. but right now everything is going on schedule. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. bodies found in oregon may be of those two missing men from the bay area. the bodies were found at an abandoned ranch. they have not been identified yet but some officials say the deceased could be the two men missing. the men headed to oregon earlier this month to buy a

horse or hay. police in oregon have made an arrest in the murder of a starbucks barista. jonathan hull lived in the same apartment complex as 21-year- old whitney hikle. hikle's body was found and in a four-day search, police say dna evidence helped identify hull as a prime suspect in the case. police in colorado hope a wooden cross will help them find the killer of jessica ridgeway. they're asking the public's help. >> looking at it, it's unique, and we feel that it may have been dropped or left behind by the killer. >> police say they believe the same person may also be responsible for an attempted abduction at a colorado lake. they're hoping the description of the individual from that

case will lead to a break in the investigation into ridgeway's murder. the first of six defendants in a richmond high school gang rape case is now on his way to prison for 32 years. 22-year-old manuel ortega was sentenced in court yesterday. prosecutors say he could have received a life sentence at trial but received a reduced sentence instead, after agreeing to plead guilty to five charges. >> we weighed the need to, you know, for justice in this case with the needs and sensitivities to the victim in this case, and, you know, what would she go through if she were going to have to testify. >> preurs say ortega was the instigator in the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside a high school dance back in 2009. five other people still face trial for the attack. mourners in the east bay gathered to remember a retired schoolteacher murdered in her

hercules home. yesterday a funeral service was held for susie ko. she was described as full of love, life and happiness. police say a prison escapee and his wife stabbed ko to death. they were arrested in washington state. san francisco police arrested a bus passenger accused of stabbing another rider with scissors. muni officials say a passenger was harassing the bus driver, so another rider attempted to intervene and that's when that rider was stabbed. the suspect was taken into custody. police in sacramento say they finally have been able to arrest the two men they believe are responsible for stealing 200,000 from the state fair. police arrested 34-year-old gene felder and antonio harvey. police say the men were armed with guns when they broke into a cash room at the cal expo and then robbed the employees of a
