>> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning. welcome to mornings on two. it's saturday october 20th. >> let's get a check of the weather as rosemary and certainly cooling down. >> you are right. good morning to you. still a cool to mild day in store for your saturday. tomorrow a little cooler, waking up with the clouds this morning a bit of mist and drizzle. widespread 50s in the forecast. the afternoon will be a mild one and as we get into money think you will need that umbrella. i will show you how that happens. the temperatures for today coming up. >> two people were killed early this morning in an accident that blocked all lanes of southbound 101. a honda hit the back of a white jeep sending it down into a ditch. one person died at the scene one of at least four taken to

nearby hospitals died. it took 30 minutes for crews to open up with just a couple lays and all lanes hope now. >> right now crews tearing apart the deck of the san mateo bridge. you can see one of the vehicles just making its way along that deck span. caltrans shut all of that down late last night because 12, 30- foot sections will be replaced for r. >>announcer: retrofitting. >> it's inconvenient but i don't mind they are spending time and money making sure that the bridge is safe. >> its going to be a pain in the rear. >> that man is a limo driver said he crosses the bridge several times a day so this weekend will be tough on him. there is the bay bridge, if you have to head into the city you can see things moving just

fine. however, caltrans said most people likely won't use it, they will most likely use the dunbarton. green is a good thing going across if you need to go that way. things are looking fine. that bridge is set to reopen by five monday but caltrans has scheduled the same closure for next weekend. >> new, they are back. the san francisco giants are back home in the city by the way after fighting off elimination for the 4th time. he we are live outside the ballpark where they arrived early this morning. >> reporter: and they are already looking ahead. now it's onto game six which will happen here tomorrow at 4:30. the giants will practice for that game later on today after coming back there a long overnight trip from st. louis. their buses rolled ill here around 3 this morning and last night's game was the last chance for them to stay in the playoffs and they did it

the coverage starts at 4:00. first pitch slated for 4:45. >> a suspicious fire destroyed a significant structure in livermore. the small building next to the eagles lodge used to be a church. firefighters soaked the building water and foam last night. the former church was said to be he around 100 years old. old. >> so i walked up and the flames were coming out the front. there was smoke everywhere. i have lived here my whole life and recognize the building. >> the building was abandoned but firefighters said they think someone was inside, possibly a homeless person who started a fire to keep warm. they think the fire accidentally spread to a wall but the cause is under investigation. >> new, firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire at a home in antioch. it happened around 1:45 at a home on melton lane. it appears the fire started in

the garage and then spread to the house. >> we are in an area that's significantly under staffed with water. so we have a significant challenge with water. we did have two water tenders arrive on scene since there are no hydrants in the area. >> damage is at $50,000. >> making a phone call may be a bit more confusing. callers in the south bay will have to dial one and the area code to make local calls. it does have some agencies including police concerned. >> if you are dialing, trying to get police or any police or fire department and you are trying to get through on the business nonemergency line you know have you to dial the one and the area code and don't dial 911 if you can't get through. >> the change is scheduled to go into effect at ten. the 669 code will be introduced

drive that -- prepare for 59 degrees in oakland. 60 in mountain view. 54 san jose. the numbers cooler than yesterday by a few degrees so you may notice that and getting outside we are looking at a midmorning to late morning burn off for most areas along the coast. it could stick all day. a view of the radar, a zonal flow. you can see it there with that strip of clouds, the storm still well to the north but it's going to sink south and by monday it'll look like it's going to bring us rain. let me show you what happens. the cloud was us along the coastline. through the morning hours, by late afternoon maybe pull away, perhaps sticking with us. this is what i want to show you. tomorrow afternoon mostly cloudy if you are going to seat giants play we will be dry but by the overnight and into monday morning this is when the rain arrives. looks like 7:00 we could have an interesting wet morning drive. behind that line of rain we will have scattered showers in

starbucks worker who went missing on year way to work. jonathan holt lived in the same complex as the 21-year-old. they knew each other. the body was found last night in a wooded area ending a four day search. >> when contacted he voluntarily came to the police department for an interview. during this interview with holt detectives determined he was a friend of the couple and lived in the same apartment complex. about the same time. >> dna evidence helped identity him as the suspect in that case. >> drivers in michigan are on alert after a string of more than a dozen shootings along interstate 96. all of them happened in the past week and in many cases the driver saw the gunman coming at them from the opposite direction of traffic. authorities say the shootings appear to be random and nobody has been hit by the gun fire. a nevada judge is reopening the armed robbery and kidnapping against against oj

simpson. the judge agreed to hear evidence and consider 18 of 22 questions cited in an appeal by simpson's lawyer. it could put him on the witness stand for the first time. a judge said she will determine if he was misrepresented by his original lawyers and if he should be released released and get another trial. >> in the 2012 election news the president makes a pitch to help struggling american families. >> back in february i sent congress a plan to give every responsible homeowner the chance to save $3,000 a year on their morn by refinancing at low rates. >> the president criticized republicans for refusing to bring up the measure for a vote. he said with home values and new construction on the rise it's important to help the recovery.

don't expect to see obama or romney this weekend. both men are preparing for the third and final presidential debate. its going to happen on monday. the focus will be on foreign policy. foreign policy attracted new attention after last month's terrorist attack in liby. >> lawmakers have released documents showing chris stevens pleaded with his bosses at the state department for more security. they say he wrote his last cable just hours before terrorists stormed the embassy and killed him and three others. the message was labeled sensitive. in it stevens discussed growing security problems in the area and that libya's police force was to weak to protect the country. >> two real aspects. one is the events leading up to the attack and the failures there and then what clearly is either a cover up or is gross

incompetence. >> back in june he signed another cable cataloging an increased number of attacks including a plan to blow up the embassy. >> today is the first anniversary of a capture and death of gadhafi. he ruled libya for four decades and forces finally toppled him last year. after being captured near his hometown he was shot dead an hour later. the lawyer representing his daughter said all those responsible for his death must be prosecuted. >> i have no doubt that he was murdered. murdered in the most brutal and horrible fashion. it's -- a matter of justice, the rule of law. >> libya people aren't expected to hold any large public displays but have ceremonies planned for next tuesday to mark the death and the end of the civil war. five defendants charged with the 9/11 attacks want their trials on television.

the issue of doing it was discussed yesterday at the final day of a week long pretrial hearing. the five defendants include alleged mastermind. the defense secretary has the authority to authorize the broadcast of the trial. >> it apparently pays to be a doctor, especially if you your office is a prison. a state review has found california prison doctors the second highest paid in the nation. according to that review it's because california has an official appointed by a judge called a receiver whose job is to improve inmate care. the receiver has been paying doctors, den fists and nurses around twice the statewide average for working overtime, overnight and on holidays. economists say there is reason for optimism and concern in the latest jobless numbers, the largest drop in the state unemployment rate in 36 years. it fell to 10.2% in december.

that's down from 10.6% in august. it's the largest month to month drop since california started tracking the rate 36 years ago but the department warns the numbers are preliminary. officials add they may be due to fewer people applying for jobs. unemployment rates fell sharply in the nine bay area counties, marin continues to have the lowest numbers in the area, 5.8%. solano normally has the highest unemployment rate in the area, it's at 9.3%. >> there is help this morning for a bay area homeowners facing foreclosure. if you are struggling, the trust will help you with setting up with a counselor. the event at the campus will

employees were stealing from bags. 19 others have already been suspended and eight were fired in june. one of them said people were stealing because of low morale and low pay. >> half a million bottles of spray on sun screen being recalled amid reports of people catching on fire. that recall includes 23 vair varieties of the ultra mist sun screen due to the risk of the lotion going off near a flame. there have been five reports of people suffering burns after using it. it said a spray valve appears to be the problem because it over applies the product. >> search is underway for a reckless driver oakland. what and who he allegedly hit. >> if you missed it you may get a second chance. the big meteor shower over the bay area. >> seasonal weather for the weekend. cool wet weather in the extended forecast.

. a search underway for the driver of a car who hit an apartment building in oakland. it happened on mcarthur boulevard. witnesses say the driver may have been street racing just before that accident. the suv hit a pedestrian who was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the driver abandoned the car, jumped in to another car and fled the scene. arizona town is hosting it's own version of spain's running of the bulls this weekend. that event in cave creek arizona is just getting started. all participants have to sign a four page waiver to get inside a fenced area in front of 12 raging bulls. the bulls can run 35 miles an hour and faster. >> you need to run really fast when you get -- when your legs get tired keep running.

. back in the bay and ready to play. the giants aren't done yet. good morning. welcome back. >> the giants arrived back early this morning and they will play later today in preparation for tomorrow's game six of the nlcs. we are live in san francisco. you can never count them out. it's like the torture just continues. >> reporter: that's right. die hard fans knew it would happen. they say they always had faith that their team would win. here in the south of market neighborhood, you can see some show of support by residents. signs in their windows, across the street from the ballpark and off to the left you can see a go giants sign up in one of the windows. yesterday was the team's last chance to stay in the playoffs and they pulled it off, defeating the cardinals 5-0. >> there he goes.

>> and as she just said game six can be seen here on ktvu. we start at 4:00 in the afternoon. first pitch at 4:45. >> firefighters gaining ground against a fire burning in lake county. the 29 fire near lower lake is 60% contained. 300 acres have burned and more than 360 firefighters have been battling the fire. full containment is expected today and all evacuations have been lifted. >> san jose police have announced this have arrested in the past month seven people. in connection to a deadly gang beating. . the other three other juveniles and their ages haven't been released. investigators say last april a group of people attacked a 14- year-old at roosevelt park . he

contribution. the fair political practices commission said the 100,000- dollar contribution was illegal and should be returned. the mayor issued a response to the claim which read in part the statute cited in the let era applies to candidate controlled committees and i am not a candidate. we are fully cooperating the fppc and hope to come to a resolution on this matter quickly. >> a complaint has been filed against an arizona organization for an 11 million-dollar campaign contribution here in california. the group gave the money to a committee. they oppose proposition 30. that's the governor's proposal to increase the sale as tax on high earners. a watch dog group filed the complaint saying the arizona corporation violated the law by failing to disclose where that money came from. the governor will stop in san francisco this morning to

campen for his tax initiatives. he will join with teacher groups to discuss proposition 30. he said voters must pass the initiative or face billions of dollars in cuts to schools and colleges. the teacher's association is going door to door and calling voters to support the measure. authorities in southern california want to foe who offered voters free medical marijuana for ballots. coming up, the marijuana mystery that has many talking. >> the bay area's largest college rivalry kickoffs this afternoon. much sooner than people are used too. it's at noon. people on cal and stanford hung up huge signs to show their school support. a game is normally played at the end of the regular season but they moved it up a month due to scheduling issues. the closure of the bridge will also make the drive difficult for fans. >> we heard they didn't exactly schedule the bridge closures the right weekend because of a lot of traffic going back and forth.

barbara lee was among the guests at last night's fund raiser for jackson's coalition. >> that's why congressional black caucus and other members have nominated him for the peace prize. >> he also spoke about the upcoming election and the importance of getting out the vote. >> its been more than two years but police have arrested two men they believe are responsible for stealing $200,000 from the state fair. it happened in july of 2010. police arrested two brothers, gene felde r and antonio harvey. they broke into a cash room. one is said to have been a former employee of that company. they have both now facing charges. >> a rough start to the texas state fair after crew has to respond to two big emergencies yesterday. first, the symbol of the fair

caught on fire. nobody was hurt but the flamed moved through the 52-foot structure only leave age metal skeleton. the fire was likely caused by a mechanical failure but it's under investigation. and then later in the day a ride at the state fair malfunctioned. 24 people were stranded, 200 feet in the air. it took more than 2 hours to lower everybody safely to the ground. passengers say they were a bit shaken up but nobody was hurt. >> body found in oregon may be those of two missing men there the bay area. they were found at an abandoned ranch. they have not been identified yet but they could be two men who headed to oregon to buy a horse or hay. the truck they drove was found burned. >> police in colorado hope a key piece of evidence will help them find the killer of a 10-

year-old jessica ridgeway. a wooden cross found during the investigation could belong to ridgeway's killer. they are asking for the public's help. >> looking at it again it's unique and we feel or believe it may have been dropped or left behind by the killer. >> police say they believe that the same person may also be responsible for an attempted kidnapping at a colorado lake. they hope the description of the individual from that case will help lead to a break. george zimmerman's team is celebrating a victory in the shooting trial. yesterday a judge granded access to the teen's school records and social media posts. the lawyers said there are videos suggesting martin was involved in mma fighting. he said that shows he had violent tendencies. they want to prove zimmerman was acts in self-defense when

he shot the 17-year-old. >> one person is dead and six injured after a tour bus crash in arizona. the crash happened just before eight about 20 miles from the nevada state line. the driver was killed in the crash. police believe he had a type of medical emergency and lost control of the bus. the six most seriously injured were taken to the hospital. san francisco police arrested a bus passenger who is a accused of stabbing another man in the neck with scissors. it happened yesterday afternoon. officials say a passenger was harassing the bus driver, another rider attempted to interve and was stabbed. the victim was treated at the scene. the suspect was arrested. >> first of six defendants in the richmond high school gang rape case is on his way to prison for 32 years. he was sentenced in court yesterday. he could have received a life sentence at trial but got a

from workers on the progress. >> reporter: the bridge shut down to traffic at ten last night and you can see this is the toll plaza on the haywood side. it's empty. the only vehicles are the caltrans vehicles and the equipment that they brought out to do this project. they are shut down the bridge this weekend and next so they can replace part of it. as you said, they are replacing some of the 12 -- some 12 sections of the bridge and here is -- here is talk more about it is steven williams. they started this at ten last night. tell us what progress they made. >> we have made a lot of progress. we were able to take out six of the 12 sections of deck structure that are going to be replaced. so right now we are right on schedule which is a -- a good thing. >> and -- happening about three and a half miles us. this all started with some cracks or a crack that was

route, because the san mateo bridge is closed. allie rasmus is at the bridge right now with how you can get around it. >> reporter: there's some people doing -- replacing the crash barriers. they're also rewiring some of the electrical wiring. they're taking advantage of this weekend-long closure to do a bunch of different projects here. the main project and the reason why this bridge is closed is because of work happening three and a half miles away from us. caltrans is completely replacing entire sections of the bridge, and they made a lot of progress doing that overnight. >> between 1 a.m. and right now, they were able to remove half of the total structures that have to be replaced, 12 altogether. >> reporter: now, this project all began with the discovery of a crack underneath the bridge two years ago. this weekend's work will provide a permanent fix to that problem, and caltrans is also using this opportunity to

about to change. callers will now have to dial a one plus an area code, all in preparation for the roll-out of the new area code next month. happening right now, if you are getting ready to head to the peninsula or the east bay, many of you might have to find an alternate route. that's because the san mateo bridge is closed. allie rasmus is live with us now at the bridge with more on the work that's being done so far. and how are we looking? >> reporter: so far, so good, according to caltrans. we're right in the middle of the san mateo bridge, about three and a half miles in, just before the incline that you see there. that's where all this work is going on. that giant crane you're looking at is in the process of hoisting out twelve 30-foot sections of the bridge. you can see where they're doing that work. this is what they're replacing it with. you can see huge cement sections of the bridge.

these are the new sections that are going to replace the old sections that are being pulled out right now. there is another new section of the bridge already strapped into a harness. we've got some video of that to show you. that was just about 20 minutes ago when caltrans installed the first new section of the bridge. caltrans has shut down the san mateo bridge to traffic for the entire weekend. they started at 10:00 last night. they started their work immediately afterwards and overnight, crews made a lot of progress. >> between 1 a.m. and right now, they were able to remove half of the total structures that have to be replaced. 12 altogether. >> reporter: so now that they've removed some of the older sections of the bridge, they're in the process of replacing it with the new sections. while they're doing that work, they're also going to be doing some seismic retrofit as well to make the bridge more

earthquake-proof as well. it all began with the discovery of a crack two years ago. the work here is to provide a permanent fix to that problem. caltrans says their right on schedule with the work they need to do. the spokesman says there's a slight possibility that they may not have to close the san mateo bridge again next weekend. that's what they're shooting for, but at the same time, they say they don't want to rush things, because it is a safety project, so they're taking their time. but right now everything is going on schedule. allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. bodies found in oregon may be of those two missing men from the bay area. the bodies were found at an abandoned ranch. they have not been identified yet but some officials say the deceased could be the two men missing. the men headed to oregon earlier this month to buy a

hercules home. yesterday a funeral service was held for susie ko. she was described as full of love, life and happiness. police say a prison escapee and his wife stabbed ko to death. they were arrested in washington state. san francisco police arrested a bus passenger accused of stabbing another rider with scissors. muni officials say a passenger was harassing the bus driver, so another rider attempted to intervene and that's when that rider was stabbed. the suspect was taken into custody. police in sacramento say they finally have been able to arrest the two men they believe are responsible for stealing 200,000 from the state fair. police arrested 34-year-old gene felder and antonio harvey. police say the men were armed with guns when they broke into a cash room at the cal expo and then robbed the employees of a
