this vallejo street woke up to hear gun fire and a short time liar a home went umm in flames. the police action that happened here early this morning >> and san francisco residents back in their homes after a long night. how a call about an apparent suicide turned into a hazmat situation with authorities ordering evacuations. >> if you live in the south bay you may have felt it. the overnight earthquake that also rattled parts of the bay area. and good morning.

welcome to mornings on 2. it's sunday, october 21 and i'm claudine wong. >> i'm mike mibach. cool and crisp when i rolled out of the house today. mark tamayo in for rosemary. >> just around the corner wet weather. mike mentioned the cool temperatures. lots of 40s right now in santa rosa, napa. 52 in san francisco, and san jose 46. forecast for today, we have this with lots of cloud cover this morning. clouds and sun on temperatures on the cool side, and then into the afternoon hours, mostly cloudy skies, temperatures from the low 60s all the way to the lower 70s but the rain clouds will be moving in coming up in a few minutes, we'll look at the timing of the heaviest rain as it approaches the bay area. we begin with police action at this hour in solano county. officers received a disturbance call and it appears things turned violent. allie rasmus is live with what we've learned about this developing story. >> reporter: this is the home where this police action happened early this morning. you can see it's got a

spotlight shining on the upper story window that is burned out. the street is closed off, alameda and redwood streets and you can see investigators in the front yard. i have to say the officers here have told me that they are not allowed to give me any information about what happened here. we've left several messages for vallejo police sergeants at headquarters since 4:30 this morning and have not gotten a response so far. there's a lot of details we don't know about what exactly happened here overnight. here's what we do know. at around 1:30 this morning, several neighbors woke up to hear two people shouting and the neighbors say they heard the sound of glass, possibly glass windows being smashed and shattered. several neighbors called police. one man who lives behind the home where this happened says he heard police respond, he heard them arrive and a short time later, heard gun fire ring out. >> as soon as i heard them pull up, bang, bang, bang, bang. >> how many shots? >> at least 10, maybe up to 15. >> now, we are trying to get

confirmation about whether or not this was an officer- involved shooting involving vallejo police. it's something only vallejo police can confirm for us. they have not responded to our requests. several requests for more information this morning. now, after the shots were fired, a fire broke out in the back of the home. neighbors say the fire looked like -- the flames look like it engulfed pretty much the back end of the house. there is a vallejo fire investigator out here, trying to figure out how the fire started and we'll show you the scene back live, you can look at that blue van in the middle of the street. that's a forensic team from san mateo county who arrived about 30 minutes ago to assist with this investigation. but again, we're still waiting to get more information from vallejo police about the two people who were arguing in this house. two people who prompted those 911 calls this morning. we don't know if they were shot. if so we don't know their condition. again, we are still waiting to get more information from vallejo police about exactly what happened this morning.

live in vallejo, allie rasmus, ktvu. san francisco police are investigating a homicide in the city's soma district and a stabbing in the tenderloin. police found a man who was shot to death in a car while responding to a welfare check near fifth and mission. officers haven't released any information over description of a gunman. they are also investigating a stabs on eddie street. officers say the victim was stabbed multiple times. so far no one is in custody for the crimes. it's doubtful that sunday mass will be held inside a berkeley church thanks to an overnight fire. firefighters were called to the good shepherd episcopal church on ninth street just before 10:30 last night. church elders say the fire actually broke out in the back where the offices are located. the church was in the middle of remodeling. it doesn't look like the fire is suspicious but investigators are looking for a cause. a neighbor reported the flames and was the first to grab a garden hose to try to fight the fire. >> i was dozing off, and i saw

some funny glow and twinges illing lights and thought they might have been lights next door. i looked out the window, and it looked like fire. >> five church interns living nearby were moved to a different location overnight because of the noisy firefighting equipment. the church had planned to hold the annual silent auction fund- raiser tonight. the smell from a hazardous material scare in san francisco was so strong one city resident thought it was actually a terrorist attack. around 7:30 last night, police received a report of an apparent suicide in a home near vallejo street in north beach. officers arrived to an overwhelming smell at the scene and decided to evacuate the building. >> thank god someone called and they got us out in time. from what we're hearing this could have been worse than it is. >> strange smell just came up, and we were trying to figure out what it was. we thought it was just something rotten in the fridge or something like that. then we sat for a while before being evacuated.

>> firefighters spent a few hours ventilating the building before allowing tenants to return inside. they say the man who took his own life inhaled a toxic gas. no one else was hurt. new this morning, long-time senator and former presidential candidate george mcgovern has died. officials say mcgovern died this morning at a hospice facility in sioux falls, south south dakota at the age of 90. mcgovern was elected to the first of three senate terrains in 1962s and became an outspoken critic of the vietnam war. he ran for president three times, losing to richard nixon in 1972, and one of the most crushing defeats in modern presidential history. a big jolt woke some people up after a 5.3 earthquake struck near the central coast. that quake hit just before midnight. the epicenter was 17 miles northeast of king city and felt as far away as santa cruz and san jose. the u.s.g.s. says that quake struck along the san andreas fault and was followed by several after shocks.

the u.s.g.s. says a magnitude 5 quake is capable of causing cracks in walls and foundations but so far there have been no reports of any serious damage. all lanes have been reopened on highway 101 in san jose following a collision involving multiple vehicles overnight. the c.h.p. issued an alert around 12:45 this morning after the collision on southbound highway 101 near the tully road off ramp. all lanes reopened an hour later. one person in the crash suffered serious injuries. and that crash comes a day after another tragic accident also on highway 101 in san jose. three people died when the jeep they were driving in was struck by another vehicle near blossom hill road. the victims were from carmel and los angeles. happening now, pg & e is working to restore power to less than 100 customers still without power in castro valley after a driver hit a power pole overnight. more than 4900 customers were without power at the height of that outage. the c.h.p. says the driver lost control on north canyon road around 3:15

morning and hit that poll. the drive went down an embankment and hit a tree. no one was seriously hurt. also happening, the san mateo bridge is closed, forcing drivers to find another way around town. they're installing a new seismic joint and replacing 60 feet of the bridge deck. the work comes after a cracked beam was fond during a routine inspection of the bridge in 2010. >> we've removed all six westbound and placed three of the new sections already and are in the process of placing the fourth. >> cal trans says when the bridge reopens tomorrow morning, drivers will see new barriers, crash cushions, as well as some landscaping. the bridge is scheduled to be reopened by 5 a.m. tomorrow. now during the closure, drivers can head north to the bay bridge. i want to give you a live look at how traffic is moving on the bay bridge. can't really see it there although that is a beautiful sunrise on this sunday morning. drivers can also head south to the dumbarton bridge or use

highway 237 to by pass the bay entirely. as you can see on the traffic map so far it looks like no major reports from c.h.p. on their website about accidents going across those -- or at least the dumbarton bridge. local baseball fans are crossing their fingers, hoping the giants will staff off elimination once again. buster posey for president t- shirts. pablo sandoval tweeted this photo of him and several teammates hanging out in the locker room and sporting cool new headphones. the st. louis cardinals lead the giants 3-2. game six of the national league championship series can be seen right here on k.t.v.u. channel 2. coverage begins at four this afternoon. first pitch is 4:37. the fight to get to game 7, got to win game 6 to get there. some fans wonder whether or not the rain mark will be making its way into the bay area but maybe not tonight? >> looks like the time is holding off perfectly. just some cloud cover. bundle up if you're heading to the ballpark, but we have an overall increase in the cloud cover. the high clouds have been increasing over the past 3 to 6 hours and eventually we're talking about some rain drops. the live camera towards the bay bridge and clear skies looking to the east. we should have a beautiful sunrise in 10 minutes. plenty of cloud cover at the ballpark as well, with temperatures mainly in the lower 60s. a pitt of a breeze out there

with winds around 15 miles an hour. so breezy conditions, nothing too extreme, but that typical breeze you would expect towards the bay late this afternoon. current numbers, they're cold. 40s and lower 50s. livermore right now checking in, 51, oakland 53 and san francisco around 52 degrees. live storm tracker 2, not a lot to show you right now, but by late tonight into early monday morning, things will be changing, all because of this. this area of low pressure and this cold front moving into northern california, not much in the way of rainfall just yet into the state, but as you can see right now, we're going to hold onto the cloud cover into the afternoon hours, mostly cloudy sky, cooling trend will continue. first thing tomorrow morning you'll notice the presence especially in the north bay. rainfall will be on the increase and more cooling expected. this front fizzling out as it heads southward but as you can pick out, rainfall expectations could be over an inch in the north bay. heading to the south bay, maybe just about a 10th of an inch to a quarter inch.

winds will be a factor as well, up to 40 miles an hour, and in the syria, a winter storm warning begins late tonight on through monday and early tuesday morning. here is our forecast model showing you some cloud cover, and into the evening hour. still mostly cloudy skies. that first ranted of rain heading to the south. first thing monday morning at 6:00. we'll expand the view. this will be a fairly quick mover because by late into the morning and afternoon hours on monday, we scale back on the rainfall coverage, possibility of a few scattered showers by late monday night into tuesday morning, but this is more of the scattered showers variety. for today, clouds and sun at 9:00, by 12:00, we can see this. cloud cover increasing, upper 50s to the mid 60s. by the afternoon hours, by 3:00, 60 to 70 degrees. cooling trend continues, no more 80s, no more upper 70s. warmest locations in the lower 70s towards los gatos and morgan hill. the five-day forecast, there is that rain cloud for monday.

increase. we could soon be talking about some rain. more on the timing in a few minutes. a wildfire burning in lake county is now contained. the 29 fire near lower lake burned a home and 11 vehicles before firefighters put that out. in all, about 300 acres burned. the cause of the fire hasn't been determined. police are investigating a fatal shooting in a crowded mcdonald's parking lot in stack on the. it happened yesterday afternoon on north wilson way. celeste garys say at least one person was shot, or at least one shot was fired in the busy lot, hitting a 38-year-old man. >> the victim walked up to the vehicle, and right after that shots fired out of the vehicle. >> police haven't released a motive for the shooting, but say the victim was not a mcdonald's employee or a customer. it's the 18th homicide to take place during daylight hours in stockton this year. modesto police are questioning a man they say brought contaminated money to a bank, making six people sick. police say it happened friday at the chase bank. they say the man handed a note

in a paper towel to the teller. minutes later the teller and two other people broke out in hives couldn't breathe. they were hosed off outside. six people were sent to the hospital and are recovering this morning. the f.b.i. is investigating a bomb scare at l.a.x. investigators say the threat targeted a london bound united airline flight that was supposed to de bart yesterday afternoon. the plane was taken to a remote area and was searched by a bomb squad, but nothing was found. the f.b.i. says the threat was made from a pay phone and investigators are trying to figure out who is behind it. the death toll from a meningitis outbreak linked to steroid injections continues to rise. health officials say 23 people have now died, and 284 others have become sick. the c.d.c. estimates that about 14,000 people could be affected. around 97% of them have been contacted and told to see a doctor, but some people think more needs to be done. >> there's a lot of people that are contracting this disease. there's people dying with this disease.

and the healthcare system is more of the health i don't care system. here's my bill, pay me and deal with our attorneys later. >> the company that produced the shots has since shut down operations and stopped distributing its products. a child in the southeastern part of the u.s. is the first reported person to have died from the flu this season. since july, 310 people have been infected with the flu in 10 states. many doctors say it is important to get the flu shot especially for children and seniors. well, tomorrow marks a pivotal day in the presidential race. president obama and republican challenger mitt romney are prepping for their third and final debate. the president is huddling with top advisors this weekend at camp david. romney is traveling through florida, and yesterday, stopped to shake hands with supporters. he even autographed a t-shirt. well, tomorrow's debate will be held at lynn university in boca raton, florida. the 90-minute faceoff starts at

6 p.m. pacific time and the format is going to be identical to the first debate. with only obama, romney and the moderator. cbs news man bob schaefer. it will focus on policy and as you might imagine. last month's deadly attack on the u.s. consulate in libya is expected to be a hot topic. >> mitt romney's wife ann attended a women for mitt rally in boca raton last night. >> what we sense last night is that light is dimming. we have a chance, all of us, to turn that light back on. hoping everything gets better. >> that's chicago mayor rahm emmanuel. he is in florida this weekend stumping for his old boss. he talked about the 2000 presidential election, emphasizing how every vote accounts. emmanuel was president obama's first chief of staff in 2009. about 50 people protested outside mitt romney's beach home near san diego. >> we are the 99%! we are the 99%! we are -- >> they accuse romney of using the property as a tax break. they created a romney efigy lying on a bed of fake money. >> as a working person we pay more taxes than he does. we're not billionaires but we work to make this country better. >> these protesters are confused. there's only one tax raiser in the race for president and that's president barack obama. >> some protesters held signs showing romney in los angeles -- in a los angeles dodgers uniform and labeling him as a tax dodger. a castro valley man will be allowed to keep dozens of

roosters on his property despite complaints from neighbors. the alameda county sheriff's office tells k.t.v.u. jose nunez will be allowed to keep up to 75 roosters on his land on sunny slope avenue but no more than that. neighbors told us in february between 400 and 500 roosters were living there. city officials got involved after neighbors raised concern about noise and the possibility that the birds were being used for fighting. petaluma's new police chief says he is already tired of looking at eye sore properties in the city. chief matt williams tells the press democratic he is proposing an abandoned property registration program. about 335 properties in petaluma are in foreclosure. williams' program would require title holders to register a vacant property at the first notice of default, and would make them promise to keep up the appearance of the home or face fines and liens. home sales in marin county were up last month compared to a year go. sales of 188 single family homes were recorded in marin

this morning the f.a.a. is looking into what caused a small plane to crash in a long island inlet killing two on board. it happened yesterday afternoon near fire island. witnesses say the plane sank in 15 to 20 feet of water. the victims have not yet been identified. the t.s.a. is moving some body scanners

from major airports to less crowded ones. the agency says redistributing back scatter scanners will allow larger airports to use more advanced technology. back scatter machines are being moved from airports in los angeles, new york, boston, charlotte, and orlando. but the t.s.a. hasn't decided which smaller airports will get the scanners. well, it was a tender homecoming months in the making. coverage by mid to late tuesday afternoon. here is that winter storm warning that i have been talking about in the sierra. this begins 11:00 tonight on through monday into tuesday morning. snow fall totals pretty significant for the first system, 6 to 12 inches. back in the bay area, partly to mostly cloudy skies, temperatures ranging from the low 60s to the low 70s. today the coolest day of the weekend and a look ahead at the five-day forecast, that rain cloud for monday, showers likely into tuesday. mostly into the morning hours. a chance into wednesday. then we scale back on chances by thursday. another weather check including the raiders forecast for this afternoon coming up in a little bit. crews in the sierra getting ready for the winter storm warning that goes into effect starting tonight. snow is expected to fall above 5500 feet. forecasters are predicting anywhere from a half foot to a foot of new stoat between tonight and tomorrow -- snow between tonight and tomorrow night. last week the sierras got the first traces of snow. >> here it goes. it all gets under way in

we are following developing news this morning. a big fire and reports of shots fired in solano county overnight. good morning and welcome back to mornings on 2. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. a vallejo neighborhood is on edge this morning. police are at the scene of a disturbance that includes a fire. allie rasmus is live in vallejo with more on what is happening. >> reporter: hi, mike. it's at the intersection of alameda and redwood street in vallejo. behind us you can see investigators in the street, they've closed off this street to traffic and beyond those investigators who you see are talking there's some evidence markers they've laid out on the pavement here. the house where this all happened is off to the right. it's this gray house on alameda street. you can see the front window is completely smashed in and according to the neighbors, the back end of the home is completely burned out because of a fire that also happened here. all of the officers here have

told me they are not allowed to give me any details about what exactly happened here. we've left several messages since 4:30 this morning at vallejo police headquarters and haven't received a response from them. but our video shows a strong police presence at this house on this block, on alameda street early this morning. let's show you the video that we have where you can see officers with their guns drawn, approaching the home. here that gray home we showed you on alameda street. several neighbors told us it started with some sort of disturbance at the home. early this morning around 1:30, several neighbors called 911 after they heard two people shouting. >> it sounded like two men. i didn't really hear a woman. i did hear a lot of glass breaking. there was a lot of pounding and i couldn't tell if the pounding was outside. it sounded like some of it was outside. some of it was muffled. >> reporter: vallejo police arrived at the house and within minutes that neighbor says he heard 10 to 15 shots fired. a few minutes after that, the house caught on fire. neighbors watched the back end

of the home completely engulfed in flames. back out here life, you can look at some -- we can show you cars parked in front of that gray house. looks like it had the windows smashed out. not sure if that's because of the gun fire or the disturbance that neighbor described. he said he heard several windows shattered and gag being broken. we are trying to find out who shot the 10 to 15 rounds the neighbors heard. we don't know if it's all or some of them, from vallejo police or from the people in the house or both. vallejo police at this point will not confirm for us whether this was an officer-involved shooting and we don't know the condition of the two people who were in this house that prompted the 911 calls early this morning. there's a lot of detailed information we just don't have yet. we're waiting on vallejo police to get some information, hopefully by the end of this show. live in vallejo, allie rasmus, ktvu. police in california say they've found a body in a

bungalo belonging to a man accused of breaking into a home and shooting a family inside. a father and son were killed during the shooting. a mother and two others are in the hospital. they say 55-year-old desmond john moses set his own home on fire before entering the family's home yesterday morning. police announced late last night a body was found during the search of that badly burned bungalo. police plan to continue to look for moses until an autopsy can identify the body. police in antioc can asking from tips from the public to help solve a homicide investigation. officers found the body of a 26- year-old man yesterday afternoon in the 2200 block of mansanitta way. they're not sure how he was killed or what a motive might be. >> they can come from anywhere, at any time, the way they shoot around here you never know when something going to come through your wall and get you. >> if you have any information, you are asked to call the police department. you can remain alone. peidmont high school has sent home a letter to parents

about a sexual competition that involves student athletes. the school says male student athletes earn points for engaging in sexual activity with female students who belong to what they called a fantasy league. officials say the league may have been in existence for at least five years and female students may not have known about the competition. school officials say there are no current plans to discipline the students involved. a substitute teacher in solano county has been arrested on charges of attacking four students who misbehaved. 51-year-old joe yao is out on bail this morning, but this past thursday, he was taking a group of second graders to a computer class. that's when three boys and a girl started acting rowdy and yao is accused of grabbing their necks and throats. >> there's no reason for what he did. he should have gone to any other teacher, that were probably just feet away from him and to have them handle the situation. >> none of the kids was hurt. yao faces four counts of battery on a child.

the school district is also conducting an investigation. a court has given a cal swim coach who was sexually abused one of the largest restitution waters in contra costa county. kristin canade is an assistant on the women's swim team. she accuses a former p.e. teacher julie caraya of assaulting her over a five year span when she was 13 years old. carrea is currently in a state prison. cunane won a rest tuition award of 1.5 million, but she won't see much of the money. she recently received care a's prison work checks for 7 and $17. canane says justice and not the money is most important female san francisco firefighters are being diagnosed with breast cancer at an alarming rate. i want to show you a video of jeanette rivers. she has been battling the city of san francisco for whether she can use sick leave donated by fellow firefighters. the examiner reports the breast cancer rate among san francisco female firefighters is 6 times that of the national average

for women ages 40 to 50. officials say firefighters' exposure to harmful chemicals may be a major factor in higher rates of breast cancer. governor brown will visit churches in san francisco and oakland this morning to campaign for proposition 30. he rallied with educators in san francisco yesterday. proposition 30 would raise income taxes 1 to 3% on people earning more than a quarter million dollars a year, and question the sales tax a quarter of a cent. the money would go to grade schools and colleges. >> i'd say proposition 30 is about jobs. because it's about kids and teachers, and they produce the brains and the skills that make the jobs of the future possible. >> prop 30 opponents say the state can balance the budget without more tax hikes, and that raising the taxes of the wealthy will limit investments and ham per the economy. the proposition on the november ballot could change what you pay for car insurance. coming up, how it could affect new drivers and drivers with

[ crowd yelling ] >> this morning, people are lighting fires in the middle of roads. a public funeral is being held today for a top intelligence official who was assassinated in a car bombing on friday. seven other people died in that attack. mourners are taking to the streets, demanding justice. lebanese security forces are trying to maintain order, but right now they are outnumbered by the crowd. many blame the car bombing on syria as to insite chaos in lebanon. there is some confusion over potential negotiations between the u.s. and iran over that country's nuclear program.

the bus ride for children is the time when they're getting on and off the bus. in california, flashing yellow lights on a school bus are a warning to slow down. drivers are required to stop when they see flashing red lights. this week is national school bus safety week. this morning authorities say a medical emergency appeared to have caused a fatal tour bus crash in arizona. the driver was killed and 48 passengers were hurt. when the driver lost control friday night on highway 93 near the nevada state line, many of the passengers were tourists returning from a trip to the grand canyon. at least six passengers were air lifted to the hospital with serious injuries. >> traveled for about 720 feet on the right shoulder, and as they did that, went through some ravines and large hills. >> the tour bus company says it appears the driver of that bus had a heart attack. family and friends are remembering an oregon bar reese at that who was found murdered days after she was reported missing. mourners held a candlelight

vigil for whitney heikel last night. her body was found friday night days after she disappeared on her way to work. a man living in her apartment complex has been arrested. authorities say an autopsy should confirm whether bodies found are two missing men from the bay area. a burned out truck belonging to ricardo hereggi of oakland was found two weeks ok. he was believed to be with another man from richmond. mendez sayh a's family reported him missing last week. police are looking for three men who robbed a san leandro wal-mart at gunpoint. the suspect confronted a store employee at the wal-mart late friday night. one suspect flashed a gun while the other two grabbed money from the cash register. they then took off in a light- colored sedan. the store employee was not hurt. cell phones are still one of the top targets for street robbers. the associated press reports almost half of all robberies in san francisco this year are cell phone related. new york city has almost the

same figures. mobile security company estimates that stolen and lost cell phones could cost american consumers more than $30 billion just this year. a mobile wallet will make its debut in two cities today. consumers in austin, texas and salt lake city will be able to use isis starting today. the mobile network is a joint project from verizon wireless, at&t and t mobile. it will work with major retailers including foot locker, 7-eleven, mcdonalds and sports authority. there is speculation a smaller ipad will be unveiled this week. apple is holding a big event in san jose on tuesday and analysts predict that's where the company plans to introduce the rumored ipad mini. providing same-day delivery to customers in the bay area could prove to be a costly proposition for some retailers. wal-mart and ebay announce plans this month to offer same day deliver re in san francisco and san jose in response to growing competition from amazon. but analysts say the retailers

a four-year-old boy recovering this morning after getting stuck in a gap only 25 centimeters wide between two buildings. the boy was left hanging for two hours before rescuers in east china could reach him. firefighters managed to tie a rope onto the boy, then started breaking the wall from inside the building. they finally managed to make a hole big enough to get the boy out. authorities say it appears he fell into that gap while playing on a balcony. a bay area man who survived a horrific fishing boat tragedy in mexico is asking for the public's help as he searched for the life vest that helped save his life. charles gibson was one of 35 people who survived after the eric sank in the sea of cortez. after the disaster gibson started giving motivational talks featuring the red life vest that he says saved his life. last week that vest was stolen from the back of his police

sunday, october 21. i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. we have been tracking this rain. mark tamayo in watching it for us for rosemary. and it's coming, right mark? >> it's coming. by this time tomorrow morning we'll have moderate to heavy rain sweeping across the bay area. right now pretty quiet out there, temperatures in the 40s the lower 50s, and your forecast for today does include this: some clouds and sun this morning, off to a cool start by this afternoon. mostly cloudy skies. there is the eventual temperature range, 60 to 70 degrees. coming up we'll look at the temperatures in your neighborhood, also more details on the giants baseball forecast for later on this afternoon. and we begin with a developing story in solano county. officers received a disturbance call that later appeared to turn violent. allie rasmus is live in vallejo with the apparent shooting and fire. >> reporter: the home where this happened is on alameda and redwood streets here in vallejo. you can see it's still part of a crime scene, and an investigation is still under way. there's evidence markers out in

the middle of the street and to the right is the gray house where this all happened. now, officers here at the scene have told me they're not allowed to give me any information, and we've contacted vallejo police headquarters several times this morning, and we have not received a return call from them to get some more details about exactly what happened here. but we having getting more information for people who live in this neighborhood and saw and heard some of the things that happened. they say it was around 1:30 this morning when dozens of officers arrived at this home. this was the scene as officers had their guns drawn. a few of them appeared to try to enter the home here. neighbors say what prompted this police response was an argument that broke out between two men in the home. neighbors reported hearing glass being smashed and shattered. a lot of shouting goes on. several neighbors called 911 to report the incident to police and police arrived a short time later. >> as soon as i heard them pull up, bang bang bang bang bang. >> how many shots? >> at least 10. maybe up to 15.

>> came down here, i seen one guy being taken away by the police. and there was another guy laying in the driveway. >> reporter: and that neighbor went on to tell us it looked like the man laying in the driveway was in bad shape. he saw some paramedics tried to do c.p.r. on him and a short time later he says they covered the man with a blanket. shortly after all this happened, and that man was -- one of the two men was led away in custody, a fire broke out in the home and the neighbors watched the back of the house engulfed in flames. what we were trying to get confirmation about is whether or not this was an officer- involved shooting. something only vallejo police can confirm for us and they are not responding to our requests for information right now. looking back at this scene out here, you can see two of the cars in the driveway of this home where this all happened with the windows broken out. we don't know if that's because of the gun fire or because of the incident. the fight that happened here, because neighbors did report hearing a lot of glass being broken. there is still an active investigation going on here.

san mateo county sheriff's forensics team is helping with that investigation and we are trying to get more information about -- more detailed information and confirmation from police about exactly what transpired here early this morning. live in vallejo, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. in overnight news, san francisco police are investigating a homicide south of market, as well as a stabbing in the tenderloin. police say they found a man who had been shot to death in a car while responding to a welfare check near fifth and mission. they are also investigating the stabbing overnight on eddie street. officers say the victim was stabbed multiple times. so far, no one is in custody in connection to those crimes. sunday services will most likely not be held at church in berkeley today after an overnight fire there. firefighters say they were called to the good shepherd episcopal church on ninth street and hurst avenue just before 10:30 last night. church elders say the fire broke out in the back area, where the offices are located. the church was in the middle of remodeling. while the fire does not look

suspicious, investigators are just beginning to look for the exact cause. a neighbor saw the flames, and was the first to grab a garden hose to try to fight that fire. >> oh, i was dozing off, and i saw some funny glow and some twinkling lights. i thought they might have been lights next door. i looked out the window, and it looked like fire. >> five church interns living nearby were moved to a different location overnight, due to the noisy firefighting equipment. the church had planned to hold its annual silent auction fund- raiser tonight. happening now, p g & e is working to restore power to less than 100 customers who are still in the dark in castro valley after a driver hit a power pole overnight. at the height of the outage, more than 4900 customers were left in the dark. the c.h.p. says the driver lost control on north canyon road around 3:15 this morning and hit the power poll. you can see the crash there. the driver went down an embankment and hit a tree. no one was hurt in the crash. new this morning, long time

senator and gormer presidential candidate george mcgovern has died. officials say mcgovern died this morning at a hospice facility in sioux falls, south dakota at the age of 90. he was elected to the first of three senate terms in 1962s and became an outspoken critic of the vietnam war. he ran for president three times losing to richard nixon in 1972s in one of the most crushing defeats in modern presidential history. a big jolt woke up people overnight after a 5.3 magnitude earthquake struck near the central coast. it hit just before midnight. the epicenter was 17 miles northeast of king city. that's inmont ray county. but it was felt as far north as santa cruz and san jose. the u.s.g.s. says the quake struck along the san andreas fault and was followed by several after shocks. the u.s. geological survey says a magnitude 5 earthquake is capable of causing cracks in walls and foundations. but so far, there haven't been any reports of any serious damage. well, someone in the bay area may have hit the jack pot.

motive for the shooting but say the victim was not a mcdonald's employee or a customer. it is the 18th homicide to take place during daylight hours in stockton this year. modesto police are questioning a man they say brought contaminated money to a bank making six people sick. police say it happened friday at the chase bank. officers also say the man handed money wrapped in a paper towel to a teller. minutes later the teller and two other individuals broke out in hives had trouble breathing. hazmat crews hosed off employees outside. six people were eventually transported to the hospital. they are still recovering this morning. the f.b.i. is investigating a bomb scare at l.a.x. investigators say the threat targeted a london bound united airline flight that was supposed to de bart yesterday afternoon. the plane was taken to a remote area and the bomb squad searched it but they didn't find anything suspicious. the f.b.i. says the threat was made from a pay von and investigators are trying to figure out who is behind it. the t.s.a. is moving body scanners from

major airports to let crowded ones. the agency says redistributing back scatter scanners is going to allow larger airports to get some more advanced technology. back scatter machines are being moved from airports in los angeles, new york, boston, charlotte, and orlando. the t.s.a. hasn't decided which airports are going to get the older scanners. cell phones are still one of the top targets for street robbers. the associated press reports almost half of all robberies in san francisco this year are cell phone related. new york city has almost the same figures. a mobile security company estimates that stolen and lost cell phones could cost american consumers more than $30 billion this year. well, providing same day delivery to customers in the bay area could prove to be a costly proposition for some retailers. wal-mart and ebay announced plans this month to offer same day delivery in san francisco and san jose in response to growing competition from amazon. but some analysts say retailers will only be able to deliver on

the search for clues after a church in berkeley goes up in flames overnight. good morning, welcome to mornings on 2. it's sunday, october 21. i'm claudine wong. >> and i'm mike mibach. sunday service will most likely not be held at a berkeley church this morning because of an overnight fire. firefighters say they were called to the good shepherd episcopal church on ninth street and hurst avenue just before 10:30 last night. the church was in the middle of remodeling. investigators are trying to figure out what exactly sparked it. hundreds of people were left in the dark overnight after a driver crashed into a power pole. it happened on norris canyon road in castro valley around 3:00 this morning. officers say the driver hit a pole and rolled down an embankment. no one was seriously hurt.

and as we told you minutes ago, vallejo police announced that one of its officers shot and killed a 29-year-old man early this morning. ktvu's allie rasmus is live outside at the scene in vallejo with more on these new details. allie. >> reporter: vallejo police sent out a statement confirming this was a fatal officer- involved shooting. it happened on the street right here behind us. this is alameda and dwood street. the street is closed off and an investigation is under way with officers in the front of the home. the gray house to our right is where it happened. vallejo police say the two men who lived in the t into an arme they started smashing windows and breaking things in the house. if you look at the cars in the driveway you can see the windows smashed out as well. several neighbors called police to report this. and police arrived around 1:30, and when police arrived, officers say they saw a naked man running out of the driveway. they saw smoke in the back of

the house, and then a 29-year- old man, the other guy who lived here approached police and according to officers at the scene, quote, pointed his rifle at the officer's stomach. that's when another officer, fearing for their safety, shot the man with the rifle. >> as soon as i heard them pull up, bang bang bang bang bang. >> how many shots? >> at least 10. maybe up to finish. >> i came down here. i seen one guy being taken away by the police. and there was another guy laying in the driveway. >> reporter: now the 28-year- old resident of the house was taken into police custody. the 29-year-old as you heard that neighbor mention and as we told you earlier was fatally shot by police. a short time after they were taken away, the back of this home caught fire. the police believe that the two men who lived here tried to set this home on fire during that argument they had. that's one thing that the vallejo fire investigator who is out here is looking into, how this fire started and who may have started it.

back out here live, you can see the street is still closed off to traffic. vallejo police say they also suspect that the two men who lived in this home where this incident happened may have been under the influence of some sort of illegal substance. but again, the investigation continues into the details about that. live in vallejo, allie rasmus, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning's incident was the sixth fatality and 10th officer-involved shooting in vallejo this year. yesterday, a funeral was held for 23-year-old mario romero, who was fatally shot outside his north valley hoe home two months ago. investigators say romero was reaching for a replica handgun when officers opened fire but romero's family disputes that claim. the city council is calling for an external investigation by the state department of justice. police in southern california say they've found a body in a bungalo belonging to a gunman accused of breaking into a neighbor's home and shooting the family inside. a father and son were killed in the shooting. the mother and two other children are in the hospital.

investigators believe 55-year- old desmond john moses set him on fire, his own home on fire before entering the family's home around 4:00 yesterday morning. police announced late last night that a body was found during a search of the badly burned bungalo. police plan to continue to look for moses until an autopsy can identify the body. all lanes have reopened on highway 101 in san jose following a multiple vehicle collision overnight. they issued an alert after the collision happened on southbound 101 near the tully off ramp. at least one person in the crash suffered serious injuries. that crash comes a day after another tragic accident on highway 101. fully people died when the jeep they were driving was struck by another vehicle. if t. victims #wer from carmel and los angeles. >> and the smell from a hazardous materials scare in san francisco was so strong, one city resident thought it was a terrorist attack. around 7:30 last night, police

received a report of an apparent suicide in a home near powell and vallejo streets in the north beach neighborhood. officers arrived to an overwhelming smell at the scene and decided to evacuate the building. >> thank god that someone called and they got us out in time, but apparently from what we're hearing, this could have been worse than it is. >> strange smell just came up, and we were trying to figure out what it was. we thought it was just something rotten in the fridge or something like that. then we sat for a while before being evacuated. >> firefighters spent a few hours ventilating that building before they allowed tenants to go back inside. they say the man who took his own life inhaled a toxic gas. no one else was hurt. peidmont high school has sent home a letter to parents about a sexual competition that involves student athletes. the school says male student athletes earned points for engaging in sexual activity with female students who plonged to what they called a

fantasy league. officials say the league may have been in existence for at least five years, and that female students may not have known about the competition. school officials say there are no current plans to discipline the students involved. a substitute teacher in solano county has been arrested on charges of attacking four students who misbehaved. 51-year-old joe yao is out on bail this morning, but this past thursday, authorities say he was taking a group of second graders to a computer class at weir elementary in fairfield's city school district. three boys and a girl started acting rowdy. yao is accused of grabbing their necks and throats. >> there's no reason for what he did. he could have gone to any other teacher that were probably just feet away from him, and to have them handle the situation. >> none of the students were hurt. yao faces four counts of battery on a child. the school district is conducting its own investigation. police in antioc are asking for tips from the public to help solve a homicide investigation.

highway patrol is reminding drivers this morning to watch out for children crossing the road near school buses. the c.h.p. says the most danger russ part of the bus ride for children is the time when they are getting on and off the bus. in california, on a school bus warning to slow down. drivers are required to stop when they see those flashing red lights. this week is national school bus safety week. budget cuts at state universities may be causing more students to enroll at private universities. the san jose mercury news reports private colleges are reporting big increases in enrollment among both freshmen and transfer students. college officials say the availability of classes and disillusionment with the spike in tuition are big factors in increased enrollment. out of state universities say they've also seen an increase in applications from california students. a fight in the battle to bring the warriors to san francisco. what one business is doing to make sure the plan does not go through. >> clouds have been increasing across most of the bay area

5500 feet. forecasters are predicting anywhere from a half foot of snow to a foot of new snow between tonight and tomorrow night. the warriors proposal to build an arena along the san francisco water front is running into new opposition. team ownership says it plans to build the 17,500 seat arena at piers 30 and 32. but a san francisco boat repair shop owner has created an online petition against the project. he's concerned it will create traffic problems and obstruct views of the bay. however a city commission report found the project would generate thousands of jobs and 10s of millions of dollars in yearly revenues for san francisco. a court has given a cal swim coach who was sexually abused one of the largest restitution awards in contra koas at that county his. christian canane is an assistant on the women's swim team and accuses former moraga teacher julie carrea of assaulting her over a five year span when canane was 13 years
