ktvu tara moriarty is out on the san mateo bridge. and tara, the bridge is back open. >> reporter: that is right it opened about an hour ahead of schedule. you can see headlights in the distance. we were out here before 4:00 and it was dead silent. then we caught the first car going through the toll plaza. just five minutes after 4:00. there is more good news. crews were able to get more work done than anticipated. the bridge shut down friday night. so workers could get earthquake safety work done. they repaired a crack beam and replaced part of the bridge deck. combination of good weather and good luck helped them finish early. >> we did two months worth of work at the 55 hour closure. a lot of maintenance work was done if that is all completed as well. >> reporter: in addition to permanently fixing the bridge, cal tran crews were able to fill potholes, clear away brush and trash.

work that they hadn't expected to start until next weekend. lye from hayward -- live from hayward i'm tara moriarty. >> we are also on storm watch. the roads are slick with the rain. ktvu alex savidge is out in the elements this morning with a round up of the weather related problems so far. alex. we are here at the toll plaza to the richmond san rafael bridge. the rain not coming down too hard right now. throughout the night it has been pretty significant in some spots around the bay area. this is the results. the roads get very wet. as we were driving up to this location, we saw a lot of standing water in a lot of different spots. of course the crashes and a lot of spinout. we will show you video we saw a short time ago. this is from oakland. this is on 580 near the 24 interchange where a single car spun out on the roadway. chp was called in there. it took them a short time and they were able to move the car out of the way. officer we talked to out on

scene told us the first rains of the season usually bring a lot of crashes around the bay area. in addition, there is also some other problems with power out annals this morning. we will show you video of transformer that caught fire up in santa rosa. more than 100 people are without power. there is also power outages in oakland. 7,000 people without power. in daly city 4,000 people are without power. and if fairfield another 3,000 people don't have power this morning. again, all of that expected to be because of this wet weather that has moved into the bay area. obviously this morning a good idea to be careful if you're out on the roadways. the roadways are wet, they are slick. the first run rain of the season brings those out of the roadway. we are live this morning in richmond alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. overnight a driver was arrested in the san lorenzo area following a crash. that happened at western boulevard in medford avenue

shortly after 2:00 this morning. alameda county sheriffs deputies say the driver was speeding after going over railroad tracks. the car went airborne and crashed into a parked mini van. a second car was also damaged. the driver was taken to jail and passenger was treated for minor injuries. it is winner take all at at & t park after the giants force game seven of the national league championship series. >> another strikeout for vogelsong. >> ryan vogelsong led the charge against the cardinals. he did not allow a hit until the sixth inning and struck out a career high nine batters. the giants gave them all the support they needed. two run double by marco suite row. the giants went on to win another elimination game 6-1. giants fans pretty happy as they streamed out of at & t park knowing their team is one

you have to do it before mid night. time now is 4:35. left in the stands another landmark day for the san jose earthquakes. a fight broke out and smoke bombs went out. police say several galaxy fans assaulted officers with were called in to help. police threw about 100 galaxy fans out of the stadium and arrested at least seven people. >> what did i do wrong? what did i do wrong? >> kicked the fans out. this is not fair. >> police say they are still looking for a few suspects. by the way the earthquakes tied the galaxy 2-2. they finished their regular game in portland. before the match there was a ground breaking ceremony for the earthquake new stadium near the san jose stadium. wrecker ball looks like a

soccer ballpointed that way. little ground. . the new 18,000 seat stadium is set to open in 2014. all right 4:36 is the time. unfortunately, sal, love to talk about giants with you. there is a problem in contra costa county. >> there is, pam. we'll have one of those morning where it will be tough because of the wet weather. we have seen the live shots out there. people standing up there in the rain. let's go to highway 4 on the maps here. there is flooding on highway 4 at hill crest avenue. they had to close the freeway there to take care of that. people are being taken off the freeway at hill crest avenue. then you have to use an alternate route or detour. the rest of highway 4 is open but there is a lot of standing water all over the place. be careful as you drive through contra costa county. we don't have slow traffic but

we to have wet weather. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge. westbound traffic is light. today is one of those days you should probably hit the road a little bit early and keep your speeds down. also the morning commute looks good in san jose along northbound 280 getting up to highway 17 but it's wet all over the place. let's go to steve. >> sal, thank you. our first cold front of the season is marching through. it's mainly focusing its heaviest rain toward the north bay. after that not nearly as many totals i should say because that's the way it works. we will keep showers in the forecast tuesday and probably into wednesday. looks like things calm down. rain and even snow up in the sierra nevada starts to stack up. first rain of the season. first snow of the season sweeping in right now. the light rain will continue at least for some to the south but nor steady rain to the north. there is a lot of cold air that needs to swing in here.

good morning. rain moving through. it will continue to move through through the morning hours. heaviest rain to the north. decreasing the showers. highs in the 60s. police in pittsburgh are looking for the -- in pittsburg are looking for the man responsible for killing a man overnight. police are not sure if the man was shot or stabbed but an autopsy will be performed tomorrow to determine how he died. police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. chaos in a vallejo neighborhood over the weekend turned into the city's tenth police involved shooting of the year. it happened early yesterday morning g on alameda drive. police say two men were fighting when all of a sudden they started breaking car windows and attempting to burn down their homes. when officers went inside they said a naked man came out with a gun and placed the barrel

against the officers stomach. that is when the officers partner opened fire. >> it was scary. this is usually a pretty safe neighborhood. you hear it happen on the other side of the freeway and downtown. it usually doesn't happen here. >> one of the men died. the other was booked into jail. police believe the men were under the influence of drugs or alcohol. the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave. time now is 4:44. sonoma county sheriffs deputies are trying to figure out what happened moments before a woman died on a beach near the russian river over the weekend. deputies found the woman's body yesterday morning in guerneville. deputies say the woman was fully clothed and lying face town on the beach. a violent crime unit was called to investigate and the incident is being called suspicious. nasa is asking people in the north bay to look for more pieces of that meteorite.

lisa weber of novato said she hit something hit her roof. she decided to check on it hearing some of the debris might be in marin and sonoma county she found a small rock in her yard. weber says she is excited. >> it's not going to go in the market. this is science. this is life. this is history. this is way cool. >> nasa says the path of meteor means there could be more pieces of it where people may find them. that has more of weber's neighbors looking for their own space rocks. a church was badly damaged in a fire over the weekend. parts of the church were being remodeled and the church spokesman said the fire started in the back of the building near the church offices. according to the website the good shepard church was built back in 1878. it's the oldest continuously used church in the bay area.

the cause of the fire still being investigated. 4:45 is the time. sal, i know it took me quite a bit longer to get into work this morning because you hit surprising little patches of water. >> yeah it's a good idea to slow it down out there. i think people will be doing that. let's take a look at what we have now with some of the roads. looking at the east shore freeway the traffic is moving along pretty well here as you drive through. but there is standing water on some of the nearby roads such as internet 980 and 880. just be careful out there. also the morning commute is okay at the bay bridge toll plaza. just a reminder the san mateo bridge is open again. heading out to the high-rise. looks pretty good. bay bridge and all the bridges are open. if you are driving this morning on northbound 280 that traffic is looking good getting up to highway 17. 4:46 let's go to steve. >> thank you, sal. rain moving through. mainly to the north. south bay had hardly any

37 clearing thursday.  increasing clouds by sunday. pam. the teenage driver from concord that hit and killed a father and daughter on their bikes will be sentenced today. the now 18-year-old driver was on treat boulevard in april when his suv hit and killed 41- year-old murray and his nine- year-old daughter. murray's 12-year-old daughter was also there she was injured. the driver was going 72 miles an hour in a 45 miles an hour zone. he pleaded guilty and could be held in juvenile detention until he is 21 years old. jury deliberations will be held in the trial of giselle esteban. she killed her former friend last may because she thought le was having an affair with her exboy friend. her attorney said she acted in the heat of passion. 4:48. three women were killed.

four others wounded staff a gunman opened fire inside of a wisconsin salon. police say 45-year-old radcliffe franklin took a cab to the salon in brookfield where his wife works. he ask then accused of opening fire inside the salon. witnesses describe a chaotic scene. >> seen about ten people leave the building with their arms up. running out screaming. >> i went to my car. i saw a girl coming out from the salon. and she was bleeding in the neck. with a paper towel over her neck and she was very hurt. >> now police say he later killed himself. it's believed the shooting was related to a domestic dispute between hotten and his wife. she was granted a restraining order against him last week. police have not said whether his wife is among the victims. protests are planned in the bay area and beyond. we will show you a protest of last year where they displayed

photos of oscar grant and others killed by police officers. protestors plan to gather at city hall at 4:00 and march to the oakland jail. piedmont high school will hold an assembly to address a sexual fantasy league created by male student athletes. now the school's principal said varsity athletes drafted female students to their fantasy teams and collected points for sexual activity with them. information about the league surfaced earlier this month after the school annual assembly on date rape prevention. >> it's always a surprise but it happens a lot more than you'd like to see it does. >> in a letter sent out to parents on friday, the principal said the league has been in existence for the past five or six years. principal also said that participation often involves pressure by older students and in some cases alcohol. the school said no disciplinary action will be taken since the incident appeared to happen off

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news new this morning a major blow to cyclist lance armstrong after the cycling body strips his seven tour defrance titles and bans him from cycling for life. the international cycling union president said a short time ago armstrong has no place in the world of cycling. their decision comes after a report from the u.s. antitauping agency that accused

him and his teammates for using performance enhancing drugs. armstrong denies the claims and said he passed hundreds of drug tests. we now know about the funeral services for the late senator george mcgovern. there will be a public viewing on thursday at a church in sioux falls, south dakota with funeral services on friday. he represented south dakota for three terms in the senate. richard nixon defeated him. mcgovern was 90 years old. time now 4:54. this is the invitation that was sent out last week. all it says is we've got a little more to show you. the event is tomorrow at the california theater in san jose. the sonoma county town of windsor is a bicycle friendly community. windsor received a bronze award from the league of american

bridge southbound 101 traffic looks good as you head down to the toll plaza but it's wet everywhere. let's go to steve. we have monday morning rain. heaviest rain is about 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.. then the front will go through. the wind will pick up and temperatures will cool down. they will stay in the 60s. plenty out here. first rain from the north come by not only rain here but snow up in the sierra nevada. you can see there is a back edge to it and clearing to the north. very cold air and unstable air to come in. some of the heaviest rain i can find so far. marin county around monroe valley. south of that some areas are cloudy and breezy. there is plenty up here. that is a lot of cold and unstable air. kind of an unsettled down. probably monday into tuesday as well until this system gets through. and then things will calm down after midweek. cloudy, rain. heaviest to the north bay. a cool, breezy pattern is in place. 60s on the temps.
