complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is ktvu channel 2 news at noon. i didn't hit anybody. that driver was happy to make it through the first rain of the season without getting into an accident. that was not true for some eres. good afternoon i'm terry campbell. we are on storm watch. the bay area is getting some breaks right now. this is live look outside but the rain is far from over.

the wet roads caused a lot of fender benders. an officer told me in host cases it was drivers that were following the car in front of them too closely and couldn't avoid slamming into them as traffic slowed down. heavy rain drenched marin county this morning and left standing water in many spots along 101. that downpour led to this, a massive backup heading south into san fransisco. a string of crashes caused by extra slick roads. >> the first rain of the season, the oil's on the road. people need to slow down and realize that. it's wet and slick out. >> this accident in mills valley left four cars banged up. the back of this honda civic was crushed by a van, and the chp said the driver had to be extricated and suffered minor back and neck injuries. further south four cars got

tangled up near the waldo tunnel. alicia dunn was in the middle of it. she says she was taking it slow because of the rain but she still got rear-ended. >> everybody slammed on their brakes. i don't know why exactly, but i slammed on my brakes, too, and i stopped which is great. i thought i was done. and then somebody slammed us from behind. >> chp officer says if drivers would just slow down in the rain, most of these crashes could be avoided. >> i think everybody has a lot of things on their mind these days, and unfortunately that distracts them from driving and you have a result such as what we had this morning. >> even though two of the drivers who smashed into each other are clearly routeing for different teams in tonight's game 7 investigators have ruled out road rage here. >> i don't believe that could be a factor. >> a spokesman told me that during the morning commute they had at least five significant crashes along 101, but the good

inch. a quarter to a half inch of rain fell. snow continues up in the sierra. look what's happening towards windsor, clover dale and parts of lake county, you can see what we call the showers. we're going to take a closer look at that. see if we can keep those out of game 7 coming up later. sounds good. pg&e says by 11:00 this morning rain had left 3800 customers without power, and we just learned that all classes are canceled at college of marin because of a power outage. about 3:30 this morning this transformer blew on a power pole in oakland. crews were working to fix it. it knocked out power to 7,000 customers. >> sometimes during the summer and fall there can be a buildup of dust and dirt on our lines, and during that first mist of rain, that can sometimes

minor injuries. the jury was scheduled to begin deliberations this morning in the murder trial oophagy bellest toe ban. he is accused of murdering nursing student michelle lay. her body was found in a remote area . es that ban thought she was having an affair with her ex-boyfriend. she acted in the heat of passion. san fransisco police are investigating the death of a man in the tenderloin district as a possible homicide. it happened on the 600 block of o farrell street near leavenworth. 62-year-old william swytack was found dead inside a building. he was suffered a head injury and investigators say they believe he was murdered. there have been no arrests in the case. a contra costa teenager received a 7 year prison term for running down and killing a father and his young daughter. the crash happened last april. prosecutors say the 17-year-old was speeding in an suv when he

drove up on the sidewalk killing the man and his 9-year- old daughter. last month the teenager pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving. he will remain in a juvenile treatment program until he is 21. after the sentencing the victims family said they are satisfied that the teen will be undergoing rehabilitation. an assembly today will address a sexual fantasy league created by male student athletes. the principal says varsity athletes drafted female students to their fantasy teams and collected points for sexual activity with them. in a letter to parents the principal said the league has been in existence for five or six years. information about it surfaced recently. the principal said that participation often involved pressure by older students and in some cases alcohol. the school says no disciplinary action will be taken since the incidents appeared to happen

election. it also means more than 80% of those eligible to vote in san fransisco are registered. san bruno residents this morning presented a petition calling for the ouster of the california public utilities commission president. dozens of residents including one who lost three family members in the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion collected 200 signatures. the petition drive aims to remove michael peavy as the chief. it asks jerry brown to remove him after the cpuc's decision to suspend public hearings to determine how hutch hutch -- much they will be find for the blast. >> we need new leadership that we can trust. >> eight people were killed and more than 50 injured in the pipeline explosion. 38 homes were destroyed and 17

houses were damaged. as we mentioned a few minutes ago the storm that's bringing rain to us here in the bay area is blanketing the sierra with snow. most of the snow is falling above 5,000 feet. at least 10 inches was on the ground this morning in some areas. up to 18 inches is expected at higher elevations. the snowfall may not be enough for ski resorts to open but boil says they may open as early as friday. if you're driving to the sierra today, there are some chain restrictions posted on interstate 80 and highway 50. and at noon still reports of snow at blue canyon, and tea hoe. the winter storm will go until tomorrow morning. partly sunny, partly cloudy, we had a front go through, 9, 10:00 this morning, that first rain of the season from the north has scooted through. now behind that we're getting

clearing, but behind that as well here comes some of that colder unstable air. these are the ones that will go down in the books, santa rose 0.99. there are numerous reports about an inch and a quarter. oakland almost a half inch of rain. san fransisco 4/10 and san jose only 1/10. most of this has blasted through behind that sunshine. now you see clouds starting to pop up here. showers are picking up again towards men doe see know, lake county from hillsburg north and this is a sign of things to come. as the system goes by that's the good news but this cooler air is beginning to work its way in. sierra nevada continues with the snow. around the 5,000 foot level, to just in between baxter and blue canyon on 80. the advisories will go until tomorrow morning at 11:00. the first good snow of the season and there's more on the way. 50s and 60s on the temps.

-- advantage of free breast exams. they're offering the free cams to the first 40 women to arrive at certain health centers on thursday between 5 and 7. those include the contra costa regional medical center. the respite center in concord. the new west county health center in san pablo. lance armstrong's fall from grace is complete. the international cycling union took away his seven tour de france titles and banned him from cycling for life. the icu president said armstrong has no place in the world of cycling. the tour de france director also announced this morning he no longer considers armstrong a seven-time champion. the decision comes after a report from the u.s. antidope agency that accused armstrong and his teammates of using performance enhancing drugs. armstrong said a while ago he would no longer fight the charges but he still denies the

claims and says he passed hundreds of drug tests. the san mateo bridge is back open and there's good news for commuters. it will not have to close for a second time this coming weekend. the first car drove through the toll plaza around 4:00 this morning. caltrans canceled next week's closure because it said work was completed ahead of schedule. the bridge closed friday night so they could repair a cracked beam. in the coming weeks weeks caltrans says drivers can expect sporadic lane closures. a gloomy day on wall street. >> also excitement is building among apple fans. what's expected to be announced tomorrow. oooóññ

to launch tomorrow. it's not the only new apple product. analysts predict we'll see new imac computers, macbook lab tom top minis. the smaller ipad is expected to cost $200 less. fedex is gearing up for one of the busiest shipping seasons ever. they expect to ship 280 million packages between thanksgiving and christmas. that's up 13% from a year ago. the increase is mostly due to consumer's growing fondness for shopping online. they expect december 10th to be its busiest day with 19 million shipments. that's 10% more than last year. and the transportation security administration is removing the controversial body scanner machines from some airports. the machines will be moved from high traffic airports like lax, jfk and chicago o'hare and put in smaller airports.
