santa barbara county. it is the second fatal shark attack off that same beach in just two years. the victim is identified as 39- year-old francisco javier solorio. solorio's friend saw a shark bite or hit him. the friend brought solorio to the shore and started first aid but paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene. solorio's surfboard had bites from the shark. in 2010, a surfer died after being bitten by a shark on that same beach. ktvu's healther holmes is live in napa where employees tell her things are improving but they say they still don't feel completely safe. healther-- >> reporter: frank, while everyone at tonight's memorial for slain psychiatric technician that progress has

after nearly a year of anticipation the new apple i pads mini was unveiled today. >> i think you can tell by our excitement you know what this is. this is the new i pad mini. the i pad is 2/3 of the size of the original. the starting price is $329. customers can begin ordering this new model on friday. several options are available depending on the price and the amount of storage space you want. all of the versions come with wifi. the least expensive is the 16 gigabyte for $329. the 32gigabyte will cost $429. you can also add cell phone service to any of those.

or about 3% to $613 per share. the stock came back a little in afterhours trading. apparently the problem is the new i pad mini is more expensive than analysts had expected. today the national weather service confirmed a record tieing five tornadoes touched down in northern california yesterday. those tornadoes damaged hopes and downed trees near yuba city. it also caused plenty of damage in elk grove and sacramento county. one man said his home only sustained minor damage but his nerves are still recovering. >> throughout the whole house it felt like a suction and it was like shaking, shaking, shaking and then boom that was it. >> reporter: the weather service says the last time northern california was hit by five tornadoes in one day was april fools day back in 1996 when the twisters hit near stockton. up in the sierra, two words you don't want to hear in the

same sentence, snow and construction. ktvu's ken pritchett tells us how that led to a back up. >> reporter: for the 14th year, the cars were running. >> it was a great surprise but also a combination of the construction that's going on down there. >> reporter: westbound traffic on i80 was backed up about 50 miles from immigrant gap. the summer road construction was supposed to be finish before the first snow. a single lane of traffic and large number of trucks that couldn't pass the summit last night led to a standstill this afternoon. the construction should be finished in a few weeks. >> the weather is supposed to clear out and dry out a little bit and they'll be able to wrap things up and get traffic back on the eastbound side and westbound side flowing normal. >> reporter: while the rain brought traffic, it brought hope for the ski slopes. come this friday we could see the lifts at boreal running for

>> reporter: julie you can see over my shoulder lights have been set up and crime tape is around the area. officials are keeping an eye over the wreckage until the tsa arrives tomorrow morning. this is where the plane went down northeast of byron airport. from news chopper 2 there are no signs of tire marks. one witness reported hearing the engine sputter before the sound of an explosion. a near by property owner said he was alerted of the crash by a neighbor. >> he called me up and said hey john, i think there's a plane crash on your property you might want to get there to see what happens. >> reporter: officials drove to the site. it's not clear if the plane had flown here today. off camera neighbors tell ktvu the pilot was well known and

well respected in the buyon area flying community. his plane was an experimental glass air 3. a highly maneuverable plane capable of speeds of 300 miles per hour. >> we have a very live live group of men that have the patriot plane. >> reporter: the faa was on scene this afternoon investigating the crash. the ntsb will also be involved. the coroner is expected to release the identity of the two victims sometime tomorrow. live in contra costa county, ken wayne, ktvu news. sheriff deputies in sacramento county said they found a shocking scene when they entered a home where a mother and her two children were murdered. the children's father told investigators he came home around 3:30 and found the mother and two children dead.

investigators said the woman and the two and 3-year-old children were all killed very violently. a 6 -month-old baby was found crying but unharmed. investigators have not identified a suspect. they are now looking for a white mini van they believe was stolen from that home. the san bruno city council voted unanimously tonight demanding the president of the california public utilities commission be removed. council members say they object to michael peavy's decision to suspend public hearings on the 2010 san bruno pipeline explosion and they opposed the submission of richard meel. we are in the final two weeks now of the long race for the white house. president obama traveled to ohio today after last night's debate. he raised questions about the trustworthiness of the republican nominee. capitalizing on a recent poll.

vallejo police are offering a $10,000 reward for information that helps solve the unsolved killings of a man and his pregnant girlfriend. teshon jones and ashley mills were gunned down in their home. the couple was targeted and neighbors saw two men running from the scene. today the victim's families made an emotional plea for help and for information in the case. >> they don't deserved to be walking around on this earth freely. >> police say there were actually four victims because ashley mills was six months pregnant with twins. union leaders are expressing disappointment after the san jose city council voted to officially oppose a ballot measure that would raise the minimum wage by $2 an hour. measure three looking to

dangers behind the wheel. texting while distracted can be just as dangerous as driving while drunk. >> reporter: here a teenager from marin high school is going to get a lesson on distracted driving. the key is to stay within the cones. the first incident happened when she was asked to send a text. >> she deviated off the course. >> when i was texting i would go completely off the course. >> reporter: texting while driving became illegal in california this year. studies show texting while driving affects the driver's reaction time as much as a .08 blood alcohol level. a legally drunk driver. >> impairment or distraction by texting i think is a major

issue. >> reporter: according to the major highway administration in 2010 almost 4,000 people were killed nationwide in accidents involving distracted driving. one of those victims was 2-year- old kelly murray it happened in this crosswalk in roner park almost two years ago. kelly was holding her mother's hand when she was struck and killed by a teenage driver that was texting a trend at the time. >> if you think one text is more important than a life, just imagine happening it to your family. >> reporter: the teenage drivers who took the distracted driving demonstration say they will put their cell phones away whenever they are behind the wheel. >> the risks are just too great. there's no text that's worth getting into an accident. >> reporter: in sonoma county, rob roth, channel 2 news. a billion dollar deal is now in place to transform the old oakland army base to help improve cargo at the port of oakland. they have signed a series of

tracker 2. you can see most of the bay area mostly cloudy but dry. temperatures are cooling off, and that rain still well to the north. at least the brunt of it we're picking up just a few scattered showers over parts of the north bay areas near santa rosa you can see in and out of perhaps a few scattered showers we're watching them sort of just dance around the area. picked up a few showers near areas of bodega bay. the satellite radar here, this is the parrot system this is going to continue it easterly trek by tomorrow. it's shifting east and it's taking the rain with it but again we have one more round that will move in tonight and linger for tomorrow morning. also bringing the sierra additional snow. we have a winter weather advisory starting up at this hour lasting until tomorrow night at 11:00 an addition three to 7-inches expected and snow levels will be dropping. if you do have an early morning drive, highway 60 as well as highway 80 you're going to need
