for the game and something else. >> reporter: that's right, tori. good afternoon to you. there's already such a presence of fans of national media outlets and security, and that means everyone is getting ready for the big game. giants' fan frenzy has taken over the bay. >> i couldn't be happier. in 2010, i had a premonition they would do it and now we're here this year and it's amazing. >> reporter: giants and tigers in game one of the world series. crews and fans are frantically getting ready. >> i don't want to be a fair weather fan. this could be the beginning. it's a good beginning. i'm going with winners right off the -- right off the bat. >> reporter: inside the dugout store, fans were getting whatever world series gear they could grab. some hard-core fans looking to get the hats and t-shirts they

turnaround for the giants. the tigers have not played in nearly a week. yesterday crews finished painting the world series series logo on the grass at at&t park. the players went through a light workout and took batting practice. the giants' players say they've overcome a lot of adversity this season but things broke their way. >> that's the thing about baseball. that's why i think it's a hard game. you have to go through the highs and lows and keep that even kiel. >> that's the thing about baseball, when things are going good, the balls seem to bounce your way and when things go bad, they are bad. >> bruce bechi announced that barry -- bruce bochy announced that barry zito will start the series tonight. the mayors of the cities have made a friendly bet.

here's the bet -- the losing mayor will travel to the other team's city where he will take part in a day of community service. he will get a tour of local services, based in the winning city. bay area transit agencies are expanding their services. b.a.r.t. is adding extra trains to help people get to and from at&t park. the vallejo bay link service is offering direct runs to and from the park and caltrain says if its trains are filled to capacity, it will add extra service as needed. also, forecasters are keeping an eye on the sky just in case rain could getten the -- rain could threaten the game. steve paulson will have more on that coming up. if you look closely in this picture, you will see the giants' logo there. and you can watch the world series right here on ktvu. our pregame coverage begins at

4:30 this afternoon. it follows an early addition of the news which starts at 4:00. there's growing concern about school safety in mountain view. tonight, parents, police and school officials are holding a meeting after several students were hit by cars during the past two weeks. janine de la vega is live in mountain view to tell us about the growing concern at this school. >> reporter: good afternoon. the speed here is 25 miles an how -- an hour. we've seen cars traveling here faster than that. a boy was crossing when he was hit by a car. this morning, there are three crosswalks with students. in the last two weeks, a child has been hit at each one. this girl said one of her friends was a victim. >> he got hit on the side of his, like, won'tdy and then he

crossing guards. parents are welcome to join a meeting that will be held at graham at 7:00 p.m. back to you. >> thank you. the contra costa coroner's office this morning removed the bodies of two people killed in a plane crash inbyron. the homemade plane went down yesterday afternoon at marsh creek road andbyron highway. at first, they thought only the pilot was on board but any discovered a second body. the coroner had to wait until the faa deleted its preliminary investigation. the victims' names will be held until their families have been notified. there's new information about a woman whose body was found in her home. officials say 0 now say she was beaten to -- say -- officials now say her body was beaten to death. the sheriff said it appears

unincorporated areas of the county. the ban goes into effect in april. after that, people who don't have a reusable bag with them will have to pay 10 cent insurance a paper bag. several cities in san mateo and santa clara counties have indicated they will follow suit. the future of the contra costa county fire protection district will be decided by voters next month depending upon whether they support measure q. new at noon, alex savidge joins us live from pleasant hill and you just talked with the chief during the last hour. >> reporter: i did. the fire chief said he's preparing for the worst this afternoon in case this tax measure fails. potentially, it would mean sutting -- shutting down at least seven fire stations and it could also impact response times and lead to more dramatic increase in those response times. the department already above the national standard as it stands right now when it comes to how quickly they get to

emergencies. the chief told me today that the department has run out of $25 million in reserve funds and now it needs an infusion of money just to maintain services. measure q asks voters to pay a $75 annual fee, a parcel tax to bring in that extra revenue and avoid station closures. >> the chief said people should be aware after the -- be aware of the consequences as they fill out the ballots. >> i hope the community is aware of the criticality of the measure, so we can have the additional revenue. we've done everything we can to control and reduce costs. >> reporter: opponents of this measure, though, believe voters are being held hostage here, strongarmed, if you will, into paying the parcel tax. but the- -- but the chief says the department has cut efwhere it can and he says the failure

manillea ortega was described as the -- manuala ortega was describes as the ringleader. he was sentenced to 32 years in prison. five other defendants are due in court on monday. mountain view police are warning people about an attempted robbery last week on stevens creek trail. they released this sketch based on a man's description of the person he says tried to take his backpack while he was hiking on the trail a week ago today around 8:00. according to police, the man said the would-be robber came up behind him and tried to take his belongs. >> i -- belongings. >> i fear someone may call -- may come out and attack me

because you can't see where any are coming from. >> police hope people will keep an eye on -- an eye out for the man, they say he's in his mid- 20s, 5'10" with a medium build. yesterday morning, a man was killed in an accident. the accident happened in the 500 block of third street. the 60-year-old man was hit when a woman backed her car out of the garage. authorities have not released the victim's name. ed lee and gavin newsom announced a new service this morning to help the homeless. the mayor and former mayor made the announcement that takes place five times a year. they say they are expanding the city's 8-year-old program to include an everyday connect. the expanded service will offer help to those who need it. 24 hours a day, seven days a week. >> we don't just get a piece of paper that says go to this

showers and cool and breezy. as temperatures take a pretty good drop. highs today. 60s. a couple of locations could pop off in the mid-60s. there's a lot of cloud cover out there. it looks like this is it. it did its job. tomorrow morning, it will be cold. it will be mostly sunny and a little warmer, tori, as we head to the weekend. but there will probably be some of that inland fog that we get after a first rain. so this is beginning to be fall heading into winter. >> correct, long overview. a followup on a story from last week. the san bruno commission wants the president of the p.u.c. to either resign or be fired. last month, they passed a symbolic resolution demanding that michael peavy be removed.

they oppose the appointment of george mitchell to act as a mediator in what the council calls a backroom deal. san francisco is putting a law on hold that would have curbed delivery of the yellow pages. this comes after the court of appeals overturned a similar ban in seattle. the court found that yellow pages are protected free speech under the first amendment. san francisco officials wanted to stop the delivery to those who don't request them saying the books clog up the landfill. but the city decided to suspend the law, spending more court hearings. we'll talk to people who can't wait to get their hands on a new apple product. and you may smell and see something different the next time you take b.a.r.t.

so i took up hang gliding. [ female announcer ] a grandpa who refuses to grow up. [ eves ] the pain was bad, but the thought of not being a hang glider pilot was worse.
